Anyone got a favorite? I'm partial to the Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps cover.
- Bill Sodeman
Still going through all these. I like the Thor with iPod and all the Wolverines based upon famous artists covers.
- Rob Haas
I really liked the Vitruvian Iron-Man cover, I kind of hated the Cable cover though. Nearly didn't continue on the list based on that one.
- Joe Pierce
Item 2: Can we still trust IE? I want to use Microsoft's browser, but it's slow and security concerns remain When will Microsoft simply kill ActiveX?
- Leo Laporte
Item 3: Windows 7 USB/DVD tool is back up, now with source code Rafael: They didn't change the code at all, and it's a mess

Item 4: Best tech gifts of the year Amazon Kindle Flip HD Toshiba NB205 netbook (and others) iTunes/Xbox Live/Microsoft Points gift cards

Audible pick of the week: When the Game Was Ours by Larry Bird, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jackie MacMullan http://www.audible.com/adbl... "Each pushed the other to greatness - together Bird and Johnson collected eight NBA Championships, and six MVP awards and helped save the floundering NBA at its most critical time. When it started they were bitter rivals, but along the way they became lifelong friends."
- Leo Laporte
hi good show from a cold day in georgia happy hollidays

Tip of the week: Buy an Xbox 360 this holiday season, get some free games ... or answer the call of duty The Xbox 360 Elite ($299) comes with LEGO Batman and PURE. There's also a Modern Warfare 2 Limited Edition Elite Console that costs $399 and includes a 250 GB hard drive, an exclusive design based on the game Modern Warfare 2, two wireless controllers (black), an Xbox 360 wired headset, an Ethernet cable, a composite AV cable, and a copy of the game Modern Warfare 2.
- Leo Laporte
People really underestimate the utility of an Xbox as a media center PC replacement/extender.
- Ken Sheppardson
I've discovered that over 70% of my media consumption (TV, music, movies, podcasts, audiobooks, etc) comes from TWIT, but it costs me much less relative to my bills from DirecTV, Netflix, etc. I've been a recurring contributor since the beginning, and will continue. My only fear is that I hope this doesn't lead to Leo trying to constantly please the audience....the vocal minority could ruin it.
- Larry
70% really? I listen to Tech, Windows, and Google, but that doesn't come close to what you do @Larry. You should step away from the podcast more often. lol.
- Randy Pollock
@Randy, I listen to 10 of the TWIT shows on a regular basis, and only watch about 1 or 2 hours of TV a day at most. I have plenty of time to listen to podcasts throughout the day, but not much time to watch television or movies.
- Larry
when i heard you propose this on the live feed the other day i was thinking 'great idea' -- glad to see you've made the decision and went for it
- Chris Heath
I hope you talked to your wife before doing this.
- Chris Strange
This is just another reason why I love Leo and will continue to contribute.
- Kimmie
Twit allowed me to get rid of cable all together. I don't have a TV at all. Twit provides enough steady quality streams so I get all my media from the internet. Without Twit, I'd probably pay for cable again (boooo!) I started the MMR! (minor media revolution=no cable/satellite/antenna, all media from the internet) Viva la MMR!
- echostreamer
Leo, will get to the tip jar tomorrow. Thanks for the shows.
- Keith Murray
from BuddyFeed
good article shen... i'll 'submit' it for twit on delicious by using the for:twit tag so leo might see it
- Chris Heath
but it doesn't really come to any conclusions... i want to hear jason calacanis' thoughts on this story
- Chris Heath
I Love TWiT and Leo - But, after reading his post I have no idea what this will change or even why he's changed it.
- Jim Connolly
Jim... all that's changing is how Leo does his accounting and pays himself. Previously he was paying for fixed costs like severs with the donation money. Now the donation money is his TWiT salary. I guess it simplifies the 'how much should I pay myself' question and also is a kind of measuring stick for success. I'm not sure why the blog post didn't explain enough to you. Do you still have questions?
- Chris Heath
Seems like a publicity gimmick to me. And after throwing Pournelle under the bus, you can forget any donation.
- Fnord
Fnord... You can disagree with someone and still remain great friends with them... We are all more than one dimension.
- Johnny Worthington
how was Pournelle thrown under a bus? what happened? or is Fnord just being contrary ?
- Chris Heath
Honestly I don't want to take anything away from TWIT, I have been watching Mr.Leo Laporte since 2001 and have loved everything you have done. That being said, Last year I cancelled my cable subscription to G4TV. Not because I did'nt enjot it but because I could DL the interesting parts as casts through MIRO. I also DL CNet, Revsion3 many adobe and photography cast not to mention all...

- CL1PS
I would be willing to pay a few bucks a year...but honestly, TWiT's quality and appeal depends greatly on the guests. Unless you can let users have a more direct say in your panel lineup and/or topics discussed, I don't think it's fair to expect anyone to pay $1-2 each month. I mean, most people probably only listen to TWiT so it's unfair to make it out like each listener will ever take...

- Scott Carmichael
Leo, I will pay you whatever you want if you keep Loudmouth Calacanis off your show.
- Fleagle
Donating for your salary is a no brainer ,I'm happy to keep it up
- Randy Nacol
I'll pay double what the Calacanis haters will pay you to keep him off if you get him on at least once a month!
- Chris Heath
Calacanis is a smart fella, strong opinion but smart try to listen to twist sometime
- alex
I've tried all I care to. There are tons of 'smart' people out there, many of whom are much more pleasant to listen to than that tool.
- Fleagle
Well... that's just... like... your opinion... man
- Chris Heath
I'm on the same page as Scott, TWiT relies too heavily on Technolebrity personalities who for the most part really have only marginal knowledge of the matters at hand & b/c of time constraints can not explore the topics at hand. Forums and interaction are lacking, for they lay person, yes I'm sure it's interesting, but for a more precise knowledge of technology, the internet and answers...

"Starting next year, DC Comics will unveil SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE, two graphic novels spotlighting the most powerful heroes of the DC Universe, with their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity."

Although, how many times can you re-tell an origin story? My goodness. It seems, however, that with both Clark and Bruce not currently playing the leads (or in general continuity) in their signature books right now, this is a decent way to keep them around.
- Jason Toney
Here is me dressed up like a present for tonight's Christmas parade. There were matching ribbons tied to the top of my super warm hat. This was at hour one of our two hour wait to get moving in the parade...
The costume got lots of compliments and it was dirt cheap to make (thanks Dollar Tree!). The best part is that wearing a box really helps keep the wind off of you, so it's warmer than just walking around in the parade.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
We actually ran across the street a little before your crew passed by so I didn't get to see much of your costume as I was working my way through the crowd- very nice! Also smart move on not wearing skates in that thing!
- David Knight
OK random "Is FriendFeed Dead" stat: right now there are 463 people in the #twitlive IRC channel, and a steady conversation stream... this item on FF has one like and three viewers have commented.
- Ken Sheppardson
I don't know. It's a lot easier for me to open up a browser and go to FriendFeed, so I don't know why everyone is going to the chat room.
- Steve Mesik
Steve: on live.twit.tv there are links to the web-based IRC chat
- Ken Sheppardson
Web-based IRC? No way! I always avoided the chat room because I was too lazy to install an IRC client for a 2-hour-per-week show.
- Steve Mesik
Item 4: Web browser usage share: IE drops for 3 straight months Firefox, Chrome up. IE, Safari down. This maps to Mac market share which was down in both October and Novembe
- Leo Laporte
Item 5: Office 2010 coming June 2010 Mac Office in 2010 as well Why is Microsoft making Outlook for the Mac?
- Leo Laporte
Would Microsoft ever release the equivalent of Chrome OS? Something that's browser only and just boots directly to IE?
- Ken Sheppardson
Item 6: Black Screen of Death controversy Not caused by November security updates as originally claimed And much rarer than originally claimed
- Leo Laporte
Yeah, there's a state my laptop gets into when it's trying to wake where the screen is black and there's a blinking underline cursor in the upper left. Can sit there for a *long* time.
- Ken Sheppardson
Audible pick of the week: I, Alex Cross by James Patterson The latest Alex Cross book. "Detective Alex Cross is pulled out of a family celebration and given the awful news that a beloved relative has been found brutally murdered. Alex vows to hunt down the killer, and soon learns that she was mixed up in one of Washington's wildest scenes. And she was not this killer's only victim."
- Leo Laporte
Tip of the week: Create ad-hoc wireless networks ... Yes, even with Windows 7 Starter Windows 7, like Windows Vista, lets you create ad-hoc, peer-to-peer wireless networks for sharing purposes. But you can also use this to share a wired (or 3G) Internet connection between two computers. According to Microsoft, this feature isn't available to Windows 7 Starter. But that's not the case at all.
- Leo Laporte
Software pick of the week: 7Stacks http://www.alastria.com/index... "7stacks is an easy to use, free app that lets Windows 7 (and Vista and XP) users have "stacks" of icons in their Taskbar (in 7) or QuickLaunch Toolbar (in Vista and XP). "QUESTION EVERYTHING YOU’RE TOLD. Don’t automatically believe what you read in the newspaper and hear on T.V. Ask yourself this: how many times have you read something accurate about something you actually know about? The media just doesn’t get it right. The way they sum up and simplify and encapsulate the world is inherently false. And it’s not just the media, it can be anyone you know, even people who love you. It’s just hard to get reliable information." -- Lawrence Kasdan to Michigan class of '90

Well, if everything ran off of USB this might be cool, but it doesn't. I'd be more impressed with 4 USB ports running down the side, but still including the two 110/120V plugs.

It's unavoidable, I have to go buy a pair of pants tomorrow. And possibly an interview appropriate top: I can fit me plus two of the cats in most of the button-ups I have now.
Hah. I put one pair of my corduroys in the dryer for forever. Put them on this morning and thought my ploy'd worked. They stretched during the day. They will have to be replaced. I don't think a cat would fit, but the sag is considerable.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
That's pretty much what's going on with my pants. The smallest pair fits straight out of the dryer but after an hour looks like I could stash a ferret or perhaps a bar of gold down my trousers =/
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Wait, you want me to remember to zip before standing up? Now that's just asking for too much thinking right there!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm having enough trouble fitting myself into my pants, so I'm pretty sure there'll be no furry critters hiding out in there!
- Mark "DerBingle" J
no, asking you not to catch part of your anatomy in the zipper is asking too much. mercifully, you won't have that issue to contend with. :P
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I have a similar memory, and I'm wincing as I write this.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
I really wish Americans wouldn't refer to trousers as 'pants'. That first sentence means a whole different thing in the UK. LOL! ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, 'pants' tend to have more elastic than 'trousers' =) And I'll stop saying pants when you stop calling apartments 'flats'. Those are shoes!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
By elastic, you mean maternity trousers, right??
- Roberto Bonini
No, actually. It's not uncommon for ladies trousers in the US to have a percent or two of lycra for stretch and give.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
LOL, Tina. "Pants" are underwear here. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes

"muffin fan" is one of the names for the little 3"-4" 5VDC fans that cool computers.

Item 1: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Let's be serious, this is the only thing happening this week Never has a game so thoroughly lived up to the hype However: There is some controversy around the single player campaign Related: Microsoft bans up to 1 million players from Xbox Live for cheating

Item 3: Windows Mobile 6.5 It does not suck as much as you've been led to believe In fact, it's better than the iPhone in a few areas It's not nearly as good most of the time. Let's not get crazy
- Leo Laporte
Unpolished compared to the iPhone? How many years did it take them to add Copy/Paste to Android?
- Steve Mesik
You can't count iPhone apps by numbers, because half of them are nothing more than $4.99 "flashlights" that simply turn the screen white.

You heard that the FB app developer stepped down because of apple?

Y'all notice the notices at the bottom of the Droid commercials that say "Droid is a licensed trademark of Lucasfilm... used under license..."
- Ken Sheppardson
I think you should change the name of the show too ... "Report For Duty!" This title is more fitting with the topic discussed. LOL
- David Sanders
Windows Mobile WM6.* Phone owners can WATCH Leo's live.twit.tv Video Stream with Free SkyFire App http://www.skyfire.com !!!! I found it at the Windows Mobile Marketplace app store. It works GREAT on my AT&T Tilt (the older one)!
- Peter Costello
I'd love to have a link to the story listing all the companies that have been ripping off customers with that phoney loyalty program... that was a long list of them.
- Ed Stoffel
Didn't you say that about the Pre? I like Android. Though, I'm not sure how "big" their marketplace is for apps. Hopefully with the new Droid, development will pick up. I may look back at getting into Android development. Though right now, iPhone development is much easier if you're not a big fan of Java.
- John Wang
Yea. But odds are those 10k apps are a lot more useful than the ones on the iPhone App Store no? I would think the developers that are in the Android side, are much more interested in creating things that are useful to themselves than the iPhone's side where there's a ton of them just trying to "get rich."
- John Wang
Of course, quantity and quality are often mutually exclusive
- Mo Kargas
The Android Market is still nascent. There are many gems that get things done, but not many "fun" apps or quality games like at the Apple App store. Otherwise, Android is quickly evolving into a fine mobile OS.
- Adrian
Mini, it can tether as long is it's rooted and running a hacked ROM.

Mona, when are you marrying this Android dude? :P

I am referring you to the "Cheaters" TV show b/c you are caught!

Oh boy - what just happened while I was offline? 1. I am not marrying anyone on the Android team. but more importantly: 2. I refuse to date ANYONE who is active on Twitter, Facebook, or any other social networking site ;)

If Moto had their Droid ready at Android launch, I would've NEVER bought the 3GS. I am so excited to see their growth - and totally ditching my iPhone. I feel bad for RIM...

I think 2.0 android is pretty big. 1.0 didn't impress me much. 2.0 looks more promising.
- John Wang
from iPhone
@John Wang: I don't think it's fair to say iPhone development "is much easier if you're not a big fan of Java". Seriously, Android development is really easy with the Eclipse plugin. You barely have to even read the doc -- just take a sample, start typing and hitting ctrl-space a lot to see what your options are on any given object. I really don't care if I "like" the language or not --...

Joel, that is extremely encouraging to hear (from an user perspective) since apps availability and development was something I was concerned about. Good to know.

I really like my Droid, not sure if I love it yet. That said, I have high hopes for the Android OS and support the Open philosophy. I think Android has the greatest opportunities to improve and succeed at this point.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
IMO Android's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness: multitasking. Nice to have, but slows the device down. It should be easier to kill an app natively instead of having to use a Task Manger.
- LANjackal
from IM
Same issue with Windows Mobile. Not sure why Mobile OSes make killing past processes so difficult.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I stopped worrying about killing processes since it does a good job of its own. Plus if you keep killing them, it just takes longer to load up services.
- Rodfather
Killing processes is super easy (and viscerally pleasing) on the Pre 8^D
