"The thing that troubled me most was how crappy the mortar was. It looked like dirt, inside the joints never got hard and look like mud next to some of the beautifully worked stone, distracting from its beauty. The part that showed the work of the stone masons was very interesting, not just how they worked stone but how they measured things out with a compass,, a straight edge and snapping a chalk line. Interesting how far back this all goes."

"> Your "evidence" for your beliefs consist of experiences with hallucinegenic drugs, and pseudo-science. You do understand that hallucinegenic drugs cause hallucinations, right? Not all of them do, and not for everyone. The only hallucinations I experience on magic mushrooms or LSD are what look like the quivering of hard surfaces, especially in my peripheral vision. Recent scientific studies have actually proven that magic mushrooms in particular do not cause extra activity in the brain (as people tend to think), but less. They work by inhibiting the normal function of the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with personality and ego. Basically they remove our filter temporarily so that we can experience reality as it is: http://www.policymic.com/article... http://www.the-open-mind.com/how-mag... > As for the pseudo-sciences you mention, you can visit..."

Or you are aware of the fact that the Earth orbits the sun. "> Radio transmissions can be interfered with. Sometimes all the radios in a given area can't get a good signal. If consciousness was an external transmission we would expect to observe the same sort of thing. But we do not. Yes we do, you just don't realize it. The brain is fully capable of operating on its own without a higher level of consciousness guiding it. We call this "being on autopilot" AKA spiritual unconsciousness. When people have a mystical experience AKA a spiritual awakening, they literally feel like they just woke up inside their body for the first time, like they had been sleepwalking for most of their life and didn't realize it. > Also the fact that we know that different parts of the brain do different things does not fit this model either. A receiver is more likely to break in an all or nothing fashion. Its not likely to break in a selective fashion where only some signals are dropped based on content, and other signals get received just fine. That's total B.S. and..."

Are you aware that the pineal gland has been referred to as the third eye for thousands of years, by both the Egyptians AND the Tibetans, two completely unconnected cultures? Decartes even went so far as to call it "the seat of the soul": "The third eye (also known as the inner eye) is a mystical and esoteric concept referring to a speculative invisible eye which provides perception beyond ordinary sight.[1] In certain dharmic spiritual traditions such as Hinduism, the third eye refers to the ajna, or brow, chakra.[2] In Theosophy it is related to the pineal gland.[3] The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In New Age spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment or the evocation of mental images having deeply personal..."

But you're right, "the mind" would be a better term to use for the operating system analogy. > Not really sure what you mean with awareness in this context. Niether do I, this is purely theoretical. "> And indeed, there is no harm in speculating such things, but believing them to actually be true should be based on some information (preferably good verifiable information) that those things are true. It is not black and white when it comes to beliefs. I have concrete beliefs like: 1. On a clear sunny day, the sky will be blue. 2. When I walk outside on a windless day, gravity will keep me on the Earth. 3. My left hand has 5 fingers. And then I have flexible beliefs about things that I don't have absolute knowledge of: 1. Life is abundant throughout the universe. 2. God exists and it is actually our true, shared nature. 3. The universe is a holographic projection within the mind of God. I would be pretty shocked if one of the first 3 beliefs suddenly turned out to be false, but not if the last 3 did. That is the difference. I am willing to change any of my beliefs (even the first 3) based on new evidence or clear logic."

"> This pure assertion, why would you think this? You are throwing away an evidenced based view for one without anything to substantiate it's truth. Only that is not an evidence-based view. Personality and ego are a part of the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex. Of course there are going to be personality changes when you mess with the brain. You have to consider the possibility that the brain may simply be a biocomputer, that the ego is its operating system, and that the awareness which links to the body/mind complex is the driver/operator. This view is perfectly plausible and is backed up by recent discoveries in quantum physics, not to mention has been claimed by eastern mystics and yogis for thousands of years. "One can have beliefs about the unseen or undiscovered without having actual evidence to back up those beliefs. Beliefs are a very personal thing. However, if those beliefs influence them to harm another in some way then those beliefs should be questioned, challenged and criticized by society. Of course it is important to base your beliefs on scientific evidence and clear logic, but when it comes to higher concepts we must acknowledge that there may not be any evidence available and/or that normal rules of logic may not apply. For instance, the laws of Newtonian physics break down when we observe things on the quantum level. Also, consider the theory that in higher dimensions time may be non-linear."
