Yeah, the Star Wars prequels really were poor films. Something like "Children of Men" is much better film making, and without all the spaceships and crap. Special Effects films are kind of like hair bands and heavy metal guitar solos. They replace the art with the machinery of artifice.
- Dean Terry
So good. they should have done this to him after the first three (made).
- Morgan
My theory on the prequel v original= the orginal trilogy was so open ended - it expanded the mind into this universe beyond imagination. Even in the first one - Obi Wan discusses The Clone Wars with little or no "dumbing down." A real conversation - like explaining to a teen ager old WW2 or Vietnam stories. But in the prequels - everything was dumbed down, explained - that massive universe from the first three was shrunk down and tied up all nice and neat. The mystery died - and so did the luster....
- George Smith
Many bothans died to bring us these photos
- Josh Haley
I'm not sick of Star Wars...how could you ever get sick of that? I'm sick of the crapified versions of Star Wars that Lucas foisted on us in the last 10 years in order to sell merchandise.
- Alex Scoble
that Indiana movie wasn't good either. I did REALLY like "The Phantom Menace" though,,, but his batting average is not what it used to be.
- Noah David Simon
Some doctors have been doing intravenous Vitamin C for years, though it was dismissed as quackery. Now I guess we can start calling it science? ;-) Interestingly, this is not a reason to take Vitamin C orally per se. Vitamin C in supplements generally acts as an anti-oxidant, it scavenges free radicals. However Vitamin C delivered I.V. creates hydrogen peroxide, which is to say, it is a pro-oxidant, it *creates* peroxide radicals.
- Karim
I'm not even sure what's *new* about this news. A very similar story from 2005 (http://www.webmd.com/cancer...) shows the same researcher, from the same section at NIH, publishing in the same journal, pretty much the same results: Intravenous ascorbate may fight cancer, but "it's too soon to tell." Three years later? It is still "too soon to tell." Your tax dollars at work!
- Karim
Either way, don't expect the drug companies to leap on this information, since you can't patent Vitamin C.
- Karim
@Karim: given the state of the American patent legislature, I wouldn't be so sure :)
- Frère Noël
Vitamin C is water soluble so you can take as much as you want and it is not toxic, unlike with fat-soluble vitamins. Since it's water soluble, you excrete it when you go to the restroom.
- imabonehead
@imabonehead Arsenic is water soluble so you can take as much as you want and it is not toxic ... oh no. Wait....
- mattpovey
@imabonehead It's not a good idea to take huge quantities of Vitamin C on a regular basis. If nothing else, it wreaks havoc on your GI tract. Moderation in all things. :)
- Adam Barker
Oh Now the vitamin C is too Dangeruos
- Ali R Khan
Somewhere, Linus Pauling is laughing to himself.

"He is one of a small number of individuals to have been awarded more than one Nobel Prize, one of only two people to receive them in different fields (the other was Marie Curie) and the only person in that group to have been awarded each of his prizes without having to share it with another recipient."
- Heidi Moon
Good stuff, Justin. I've also been looking at who a given user follows as a factor in deciding whether or not to follow them. It's my verison of, "Tell me who you follow, and I'll tell you who you are."
- ha3rvey (wants confit)
Totally forgot to mention, when I do my weekly (or so) review, I'm using Hao Chen's GreaseMonkey Script. It's a life saver! http://userscripts.org/scripts... - Just updated the post to include the link as well.
- Justin Korn
Solid advice. I really like the part about looking into their stream and analyzing what associated services mean what about which users. I'm relatively new so preventing noisy feeds is good. However, you should give a nod to the hide feature which lets me hide services from some users. I am a huge fan of that since it lets me get down to the really good bits of content being shared.
- Derick Valadao
from twhirl
@Derick: Glad you found my post useful. As for the "Hide" function, I use it all the time, but I did not want to dig into how to deal with the noise issue. My main point was to inform users how I deal with my subscriptions in order to ensure my feed is relevant to me and my interest. In the long run, this is the best noise reducer there is (IMO).
- Justin Korn
@Justin: Maybe it would make a suitable topic for a follow-up. I know the hide feature has been documented in many places but it would be really helpful to have a recent, well-written reference on how to filter out the noise within feeds you would normally find interesting.
- Derick Valadao
from twhirl
@Derick: I agree, it would be a great follow-up, however, I think Louis Gray's article hits home on covering how to use hide (http://www.louisgray.com/live...). If you haven't read it, give it a whirl and let me know if you still think another write-up is needed :)
- Justin Korn
@Justin: ah yes. I remember reading that article. It did to a pretty good job. Thanks for reminding me. I did use some of his hints and it did a pretty decent job of keeping the talking points in focus. Maybe you are better to just link to the article in case others haven't read it :)
- Derick Valadao
from twhirl
@Derick: Chris Baskind also started this thread (http://friendfeed.com/e...) which has some good tips. I'm guessing he is thinking up a post on this very topic as we speak/write.
- Justin Korn
@Justin: Wow is that ever an expansive list. I think your suspicions are well placed.
- Derick Valadao
from twhirl
There wasn't any focus I could see. Just Steve Gillmor's personal blog and the b-side of TechCrunch.
- Mark Trapp
Where will Steve Gillmor post his next manifesto?
- TDavid
"Farewell sweat TechCrunch IT" - sweat kinda works in a weird way, but maybe you meant sweet?
- Hutch Carpenter
for those wondering if it is shut as there's no official announcement: type techcrunchit.com into a browser. Also heard that Calley is no longer at TC as well. Changes happening by the sound of it.
- Duncan Riley
Man, I don't know whether to laugh or cry....or both
- Bwana ☠
Hutch, I'm not sure what FSG means...I never do with him
- Duncan Riley
Sorry but this blog post is not nearly long enough to be from steve gilmor, even fake steve gilmor.
- sean percival
Sean, in death people become relatively silent.
- Duncan Riley
So does this mean a spot opens up on the Techmeme Leaderboard for you, Duncan?
- Cyndy
I was surprised to see the blog launch considering all guest posts on techcrunch.com from Steve Gillmore before Techcrunchit were getting considerable flak about the long winded and abstract writing style that was used.
- Adam Helweh
Cyndy, that spot will be reserved for another Arrington/ Gabe sycophant :-)
- Duncan Riley
Thought it was a great feed, I will miss it, Later TechCrunchIT
- Jason Holbrook
Looks like it's back. I'm able to access the front page and articles again.
- Mark Trapp
I don't think I'm on enough hallucinogens to understand that post... something or another shut down? Uh, ok... It was HItler's blog or something? That's where you lost me...
- Jason Carreira
It's back! although notice the last post date.
- Duncan Riley
FSG has the power to bring blogs back from the dead??
- Cyndy
Guys they have only been around for like 60 days and had 50,000 uniques according to Compete.com... I wish I had that kind of traction. If they hadn't used the TC brand someone (me and a group) would have picked it up for sure. That was a great start. Why did they not continue I wonder? Duncan help me out you know how the big man thinks more than any of us
- Roger Kondrat
Roger, you would have that kind of traction if TechCrunch crosslinked with every article you wrote. ;)
- Cyndy
Two problems. Nik + SG would have been paid...well Nik definitely but both were named editors so presume both. Say 80-100k yr for an editor, maybe total if they split it + other writers for the site (allocated expenses, even if they were shared between sites). 50k uniques over 2 months doesn't even come remotely close to covering expenses. Arrington is a tight arse who hates spending money. My guess is that the site wasn't growing quickly enough and they decided to cut their losses now
- Duncan Riley
It's also not a space Arrington would want to necessarily own either, after all there's no magical pot of gold nor any competitor he wants to destroy, so where as CrunchGear was sustained at a loss for a long time (and could well still be losing money) there was no reason for TCIT to do so. Pure business decision from him.
- Duncan Riley
also there's the sucker aspect. My guess is that it wasn't his idea to start with, that Nik cooked it up and sold it to him, with SG's support. Arrington has always had poor judgement with investments and happily spends money to support friends. Maybe charity would be the better definition
- Duncan Riley
It's redirecting back to TechCrunch again
- Glenn Slaven
Completely gone from all the menus too now
- Glenn Slaven
bizarre, it's like ZOMG, someone noticed! What should we do!
- Duncan Riley
TCIT is an idea that has been floating around for some time in Arringtonland, I was even involved with some very early discussions (nixed when Gillmor noticed I was being included in group emails). I wouldn't be quite so quick to deadpool it, but one wonders if any such closure might be related to acquisition discussions which are coming to a head.
- Paul Montgomery
Does this mean the TechCrunch Tablet is deadpool'd too?
- Paul Montgomery
Paul, interesting question given the initial drive came out of TCIT.
- Duncan Riley
With all due respect to Duncan, I think it opens a spot for Cyndy .... (he ducks)
- Charlie Anzman
it is again redirecting. Duncan any informed guesses on the reason for closure :-). Bye the way I posted about no new articles on techcrunchit on friendfeed about 3 days back.
- Sidharth Dassani
No kidding Paul, what does this mean for the iCrunch?
- Pat Hawks
Sidharth, apol, I got a direct tip on it today. My guess is that it simply didn't find enough traffic.
- Duncan Riley
My FF stats never seem to change - am I alone in that assessment?
- Susan Beebe
I wanted to see if that was true (at least for me), so I've been tracking it for a while. Edythe slowly rose to the top, Ontario shot up to the top (probably due to the lastfm feeds room), and Mona is slowly rising in rank. For my who's interested in me, the bottom 2 or 3 changes frequently, but the rest generally stays the same.
- Mark Trapp
I have followed Mona for a month, and she is not on my list. I have another person that is very sticky, but I have not interacted with that person for two months.
- Russellreno
This sticky person Russell refers to will not be named.
- Louis Gray
It's Mr. Sticky, the social media expert who shares pictures of cats. Or something.
- Mark Trapp
Ok wise guys, here are the results. I stand corrected. Now vs May 30. 1) Edythe new, 2) THawk -1, 3) LGray -1, 4) Scoble -1, 5). O Emperor New, 6) RAPatton New, 7) SRubel no change, 8) Corvida -4), 9) McCall new, 10) Arrington -4. Those who fell off list - JGolberg, Paul Bucheit (don't tell him), Engtech and Chris Nixon. Corvida is Ms Sticky.
- Russellreno
So the algorithm is better than my memory. Imagine that.
- Russellreno
It's ridiculous, but the stickiness of people like Arrington and Scott Beale makes me wonder if there's some sort of "new user bonus" to the list; that is, people you subscribe to first have a huge amount of weight over people you subscribe to later. I don't recall liking or commenting on their stuff for weeks, but it took 2 months for them to fall off my list.
- Mark Trapp
i don't like that i'm on neither of those lists!
- Cee Bee
Actually, mine have moved quite a bit since the last time I looked. I'm thinking they'll ossify the longer you're on FF, unless your habits change dramatically.
- Chris Baskind
Both of my lists change gradually every month
- Mitchell Tsai
at least two days ago on that new icon, Mark ;)
- Michael W. May
Hey, to my credit, I posted this yesterday :-P
- Mark Trapp
hee. well, thank you for noticing at any time, Mark and mwm. :p
- edythe
17,000 right, something like 5 now and 12 later. I would have to guess since it's on Spike right now and that scene was 30 minutes ago. I'm at work so it's not like i'm paying attention.
- Squid
yes it was 17,000. 2,000 now and 15,000 later.
- Rahul Das
Serious star wars trivia. I'm impressed!
- Mitchell Tsai
ya gotta see Kevin Spacey on actors studio ... doing the impressions ... go to youtube now; you'll thank me
- Dan Covington
Jamie Foxx's Ronald Reagan impression too. Freakishly good. Love that series.
- Casey
is this the best movie summer ever or what.
- Karim
That seems to be the thing, you know, create a strong personal brand, then wind up as a caricature of it. I think Baudrillard referred to that as "hyperreal." c.f. John Dvorak, Andy Rooney...
- Karim
I think he should have said BOOyahhh! differently. C'mon he's an acting coach!? :) Very funny...
- Mario Sundar
I am very excited for this and for the Dark Knight.
- RAPatton
I have not seen the first one, have no real desire to see this one, but this is a GREAT trailer! ;)
- Paula Hawk
Are you kidding me?? That was a bit too short and not super funny... not sure where the best ever hype is coming from. It's tough with actor's studio after Will Ferrell has done such a good job making fun of it- making fun of IAS is a bit hacky now.
- Brian Carter
I saw the microbe ones at the local science center; they are awesome.
- Benjamin Golub
What's that noise? It's all my money leaving me as I buy hundreds of these.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I've been buying the microbe ones for my gf, she's a microbiology grad student. She loves them. The particle ones aren't quite as fun, but still amusing.
- xero
The Antiproton looks kinda like Meatwad.
- April Buchheit
I have the original, and swear by it. Now if only my CDMA Treo behaved better with it.
- Bradley McSpinn
I've got the original. It was SUCH an improvement over the iPhone headset, I couldn't believe it. Audio quality wasn't as good, but everything else was--noise filtering, recieved audio, bluetooth distance and clarity. You've got me tempted to upgrade when I upgrade to the new iPhone...
