I recently wrote a blog post about the demise of hashtags on Twitter. I thought the Twitter room on FriendFeed would be a great place to debate this topic. - Matt Browne

In textual media, as opposed to Flickr, tags are a placeholder for decent search. Between Summize integration and the eventual return of the track function, tagging becomes pointless. You could easily recreate a tag cloud by counting incidences of all words (and removing pointless words). - Vezquex

Not every message that has the word "dog" in it is about dogs. Not every message that is about dogs has the word "dog" in it. That is why tags are useful. - Peter

Peter, I think you are right. But, you can infer that if enough people all mention dogs, they are all probably talking in the same context. There will be a few outliers, but do those really need to be tagged/indexed? Do the usefulness of hashtags get lost on the mainstream and next gen Twitter user? I think so. - Matt Browne

Hash tags won't go away. They are useful in lots of scenarios, particularly events. I want people to be able to find my tweet about the Democratic National Convention, for instance, but including those works in the tweet would use up 35 characters! Much simpler to just include #dnc or #dnc08 or whatever people are using. - Mack D. Male

Hashtags are great, and I've been using them since their inception. I think the best way would be to use language that you know will be searched as well as hashtags. - Ryne Nelson

I have never seen that video and don't want to. I used to go to the ABCD camp in Teaneck and I saw him dominate for two years by just passing. No points, all assists...and the crowds went wild. I haven't used HelloTxt, but from first impressions of the webpage it doesn't look quite as nuanced as ping.fm - seems more about status updates only. Ping.fm allows blog and microblog posting as well and I like the flexibility. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with doing one thing well. - David Young
