The longtime or especially astute readers all know I'm a University of North Carolina alum and an ardent Tar Heel basketball fan, and I can't help but notice how closely this election parallels the UNC/Dook rivalry in basketball, especially after today's announcement of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate. Maybe this is a stretch, but follow me... - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
? I haven't seen him play, I've heard the tyson chandler comparisons, but remember all they said about darko before he was drafted. we'll just have to wait and see - Richard Lawler via twhirl
I saw him play in the olympics. He looked really good. Not sure how he'll look in the NBA, but how many good 7' centers are there. - Rodfather
Great video! I'm worried Haddadi will be like Nenad Krstic with a little more defense. In other words, Haddadi could be in Russia in a couple years. - Ryne Nelson
"speed...to keep up with SHAQ"? That shouldn't be a problem. - Maneesh Arora
Wow. This is rather cool. Although, I take the NBA to another level and try to not just follow the scores...but *watch* all the games. :-) - Ryne Nelson
“it seems i've been invited to join your Basketball room ... i don't actually follow this sport, so i won't stick around to clutter the place ... i just wanted to say thanks for the invitation!”
Unfortunately, some of TweetStats comprehensiveness is limited until Twitter brings back the pagination feature. :( (note: I'm the developer of TweetStats) - Damon
@Damon: It still sucks that the pagination is currently so limited. - Voyagerfan5761
I was going to add full public timeline support to TweetStats, then Twittter pulled XMPP - I wonder how these guys are getting their data? - Damon
I recently wrote a blog post about the demise of hashtags on Twitter. I thought the Twitter room on FriendFeed would be a great place to debate this topic. - Matt Browne
In textual media, as opposed to Flickr, tags are a placeholder for decent search. Between Summize integration and the eventual return of the track function, tagging becomes pointless. You could easily recreate a tag cloud by counting incidences of all words (and removing pointless words). - Vezquex
Not every message that has the word "dog" in it is about dogs. Not every message that is about dogs has the word "dog" in it. That is why tags are useful. - Peter
Peter, I think you are right. But, you can infer that if enough people all mention dogs, they are all probably talking in the same context. There will be a few outliers, but do those really need to be tagged/indexed? Do the usefulness of hashtags get lost on the mainstream and next gen Twitter user? I think so. - Matt Browne
Hash tags won't go away. They are useful in lots of scenarios, particularly events. I want people to be able to find my tweet about the Democratic National Convention, for instance, but including those works in the tweet would use up 35 characters! Much simpler to just include #dnc or #dnc08 or whatever people are using. - Mack D. Male
Hashtags are great, and I've been using them since their inception. I think the best way would be to use language that you know will be searched as well as hashtags. - Ryne Nelson
It depends on the audience as well, for Gnomedex it seemed as if _everyone_ was using hashtags. - Damon
the YG shaun livingston, just cleared for contact, still working on a comeback - Richard Lawler
just thinking of the video of him blowing out his knee makes me cringe. i hope he makes it back. - Rodfather
Livingston is looking more and more like ET every day. :-) - Ryne Nelson
I have never seen that video and don't want to. I used to go to the ABCD camp in Teaneck and I saw him dominate for two years by just passing. No points, all assists...and the crowds went wild. This is at the same time that Sebastian, Darius Washington, and that Arizona point guard from Philly were also having great camps. - Bryan R. Adams
I can see the resemblance now that you bring it up...but it wouldn't be the first connection I'd make. But, come to think of it, I can't really say how Michael Redd looks like... - Ryne Nelson
Kobe is the single biggest scumbag in professional sports. Biggger scumbag than Barry Bonds, bigger scumbag than Pacman Jones, etc. He brings shame on the NBA and the U.S. Olympic team. - Frank Roche
Occasionally I work with the exceptional people in PR at USA Basketball. Their organization is really devoted to young talent, goodwill, giving back to the community and comprises a number of teams of all ages. I've had numerous conversations with my main contact about some of extraordinary men and women on the Senior Teams, the most known of the USAB players. It's so disturbing that the public standouts are the few notorious ones. - Donna Mugavero
The commentators seem to think he is positively reshaping the world's view of US basketball. I can't imagine how bad the world's view must be. - SarahChambers
Olympics breakdown - Line of the Night made me an NBA fan again back in '03 - Richard Lawler via Bookmarklet
"Doug Collins saying slippage over-and-over again makes us uncomfortable… Who invited Craig Sager, and who let him wear “normal” clothes?… Thanks for another screw-up Time Warner. The Los Angeles-area Time Warner service does NOT feature the NBC Basketball Channel which is airing EVERY Olympic basketball game. Thanks again… Meeelllloooo not even close to his goal of 10 boards, only bringing down 4…. Deron Williams looking like Common during the Opening Ceremonies, with the beard and the hat… Tayshaun looked truly amazed walking into the Bird’s Nest… Manu looked 10 years younger during the O.C., and then 10 years OLDER after Argentina lost it’s first game in a battle vs. Lithuania - Richard Lawler
heartbreaking loss by argentina to lithuania. it was shocking - Cee Bee
Love the comparison of Deron to Common! :-) - Ryne Nelson
FriendFeed friend grouping without adding the userscript, FriendFeed SMS posting, a FriendFeed iphone app and the Jott iPhone app to stop sucking. - Steve Isaacs
Sweetcron seems like something essential. When's its debut? - Ryne Nelson
@ryne 28/8 according to the developer's email last week - Tom Beardshaw
I'm not getting the new Facebook layout. Where are my groups? Lost. - Laura Norvig
I have problems with he new FB - the combination of NewsFeed and The Wall is a pretty sizable Fail for me and many others. - Steve Isaacs
I really hope I start to like the new FB...I've grown accustomed to the old layout for the past four years. By the way, where's the wall?! - Ryne Nelson
I haven't used HelloTxt, but from first impressions of the webpage it doesn't look quite as nuanced as ping.fm - seems more about status updates only. Ping.fm allows blog and microblog posting as well and I like the flexibility. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with doing one thing well. - David Young
I like hello.txt because I could actually log into it without getting a beta invite. For me, they have first mover status. :P - Justin Whitaker
Good point Justin, but Ping.fm invite codes are so freely available these days, I don't even know why they're still required - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
HelloTxt - because it has an SMS gateway. - Alja Sulcic
Ping.fm - The triggers are very useful - Bwana McCall
Sounds pretty even right now. Someone should post a feature comparison grid! - Glenn Batuyong
Hello.txt with SMS gateway; while Ping.fm with IM support. Hello.txt is two way (at least on the web interface); while Ping.fm could only send messages, not receiving. - Jansen Lu
I'm trying to get SMS working at hellotxt, but it rejects saying that I'm not sending to a "vaild 10 digit code" - ideas anyone? - Steve Isaacs
Thanks for the updates, everyone. Does either service work well with Blackberry? - Ryne Nelson
would anyone use Hellotxt as a two-way communication tool? or just treating it as a message broadcaster? - Jansen Lu
HelloTxt: nicer interface and more services supported, though I tend to use both 'cos I'm a nerd ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol my Ping.fm's interface is very clean and neat, 'coz it's only the gtalk conversation windows :P - Jansen Lu
I'm leaning toward TelloText though I haven't really given Ping.fm a fair shot. - Kimberly J
Ping.fm; it has all the services i use and need to post for conveniently. plus the great interface. - genieyclo
I don't understand the signing. Where's the room on the roster for him? Is he really better than Coby Karl at this point? Why not wait a year? - Jason Wojciechowski
6'9 PG? interesting. I'll be watching for him in the US - China game, peace to the YG Shaun Livingston - Richard Lawler
He looked fine against the US today...didn't look nervous at all. He should be a decent addition. I'm worried about his length, though (too tall to play point). - Ryne Nelson
yeah he looked ok, also, I don't know how much burn he'll get with the lakers as they try to find out if he can play nba point or not - Richard Lawler via twhirl
he's an impressive player. quick, good ball handling, etc. should be a good addition to come off the bench - Cee Bee
When I saw the opening ceremony last night here in Aus, the commentators absolutely shit me. Filled with prejudice if not downright contempt. Who needs announcers and commentators anyway?! - Mo Kargas
i agree I think they could show this without the announcers....maybe have it on one channel announcer free. - (jeff)isageek
""For China, they have to understand that my loyalty to my country will never change. But now I have another group of people in America that I need to take care of. These people, the Chinese fans and American fans are not connected. They do not understand how each other think. I am the one who is connected. I am in the middle. That is the important goal of the Olympics, to bring different people together."" - Rodfather via Bookmarklet
Yao says he's playing at 60 or 70 percent of his full capacity. Well, at least China will have an excuse if they get blown out by the USA in just over a week. - Ryne Nelson
