VentureBeat 5/20/2008 post http://venturebeat.com/2008... Note - this may be the only source of the discussion with Alex Payne. When I tried to go to the original post in the Twitter developer blog, I ended up at a wiki instead.

It wasn't until I saw a post from Alex Scoble that I realized that a single FriendFeed item could go multiple places. Stupid FriendFeed tricks...whoops, I mean Enigmatic FriendFeed tricks.

Set in the band's practice room, it simply depicts the band playing the song from beginning to end. According to Factory Records owner Tony Wilson, Demme was looking forward to filming dynamic shots of Stephen Morris behind the drum kit and was dismayed to find that the drums in the song were all programmed."

So now I need to find some sources that talk about how social media companies market themselves. A simple search won't suffice, since a search for the terms "social media marketing" results in articles describing how ordinary firms can use social media to market themselves. But I want to see how social media firms employ, or don't employ, an overall marketing strategy.

Preliminary thoughts - Twitter did do the SXSW thingie and all that, but that's not a full marketing strategy, as evidenced by the fact that it took them over a year to get around to hiring someone to implement a monetization strategy for Twitter.

Palihapitiya, a former venture capitalist at the Mayfield Fund and one-time head of AOL's instant messaging application, knew his audience. TieCon is a two-day conference cut out for technology entrepreneurs; and it attracted as many as 4,000 attendees.
