"There is a less extreme formulation that is pretty well accepted in academia - namely that the purpose of a business is to "satisfy all stakeholders.""

"I'm not convinced that it was the "Golden Child" who instigated the change, and that the "adult supervision" should have stood up and objected. My impression of dotcom execs is they're generally more rapacious, unethical and greedy than any founder."

"I don't think that's correct. The text at the top refers to "Holders of Treasury Securities" and the legend on the side says each $ equals 10m of Treasury Securities. I.e. debt. In addition the graphic seems totally screwy. There are 32 rows of 35 dollar signs (total of 1120) which means that $11.2 billion are represented. Which bears no resemblance to either the number at the top nor the one at the bottom. In addition, the number at the top ($3.4 billion) seems quite small in relation to the one at the bottom. Seems screwed up."

"When I lived in the valley there were a bazillion Canadians there. Someone told me at one point that the bay area can be thought of as the 5th largest Canadian city. I'm from Nova Scotia myself, but now in MA."

""At the top of every company, there's at least one person who really cares and really wants the product and the customer experience to be great." In my experience that person is rarely at the top."

"From wikipedia: "Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral containing rare earth metals and is an important source of thorium, lanthanum, and cerium. It occurs usually in small isolated crystals." I'm guessing that's not what you meant."

"I don't think anybody believes that sales and marketing are as important as engineering. I think instead that most people here believe that all the sales and marketing people treat engineering as if it doesn't matter at all. And we'll cheer for anyone who says it's not the case."

"People do pay more to see a movie in some cases though. Either they pay $20 to see it in a theater (including overpriced popcorn and soda), or they purchase the dvd."

"I thought I'd seen it, but couldn't find it in a quick search. And the extra slash on the end of the url stopped it from triggering the dupe detector. Seems like a simple fix to match up urls with or without a trailing slash."

"I really enjoyed "A Pattern Language, " even though it wasn't relevant to my life other than its influence on the Design Patterns people."

"The site is nothing but a demo and a "Notify me when you're actually accepting customers." There's links to 5 other sites that do the exact same thing. There's literally hundreds of other sites out there that do similar things."

""However, current tastes and sensitivities make it highly unlikely that a comedy group would even attempt making a film like Brian today" It seems from the article that it was highly unlikely that a comedy group would even attempt making a film like Brian in 1979. I highly recommend Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyer's Cut) - it's a great documentary about Python. The author of the article appears several times."

"Ok, perhaps I wasn't clear. I love everything in this article, but it's hard to say anything that doesn't increase the complexity of it, which is the whole problem with people hiring programmers. So I'll say it again. Yep."
