"A very small number of people in Silicon Valley and their cohorts are making your life miserable. They are forcing you to sign in to more and more services. They are taking away your privacy and taking control of your information out of your hands. They are adding to the deluge of emails you already read, and alerts you already must act upon, and the sites you must check for updates. 'How do they do it?" you ask. "Where do they find the time in the day to answer all the Plurks and Twitters and Friendfeeds and Brightkites?'" - Ole Begemann

Another approach to depth of field in landscapes, besides hyperfocal distance. Merklinger: "The general rule for scenic photographs, where one wishes to maximize the depth of field, is as follows. Set the focus at the distance of the most distant object. Then set the lens opening [i.e., the diameter of the aperture in absolute size, not f-number] to the size of the smallest object to be resolved in the foreground. No calculations needed!" - Ole Begemann

This API allows you to detect the language of a text or translate it with one Javascript call. Really cool. - Ole Begemann
Here's a link where you can try out the language detection interactively, including the reliability of the API's assessment. http://www.google.com/uds/samp... For example, "Hallo, wie geht's?" returns: "GERMAN ( reliable : 0.24648288)". - Ole Begemann

Version 2 of my Greasemonkey script. Highlights your own comments with a blue icon and those of the thread owner in green. I don't know if/how Greasemonkey handles updates so if you've already installed it you might want to install it again. Feedback welcome. - Ole Begemann via Bookmarklet

Gallup Poll: Creationism vs. Evolution
Wednesday at 5:03 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Gallup has been asking this three-part question about the origin of humans since 1982. Perhaps surprisingly to some, the results for the broad sample of adult Americans show very little change over the years. Between 43% and 47% of Americans have agreed during this 26-year time period with the creationist view that God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so. Between 35% and 40% have agreed with the alternative explanation that humans evolved, but with God guiding the process, while 9% to 14% have chosen a pure secularist evolution perspective that humans evolved with no guidance by God." - Ole Begemann via Bookmarklet
