Apple at the tipping point and this is coming as no surprise - http://techwag.com/index...
When people ask me whether they should buy a Mac or a Windows machine, I always tell them that you can basically do any job on a Mac or a PC. It may be easier to do one task on one machine or another, but in the end, you can do anything on either. I have two of each, and which one I use depends on which one I'm closest to. Except for gaming. :) - ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
Point taken, James. I've never even heard of PhaseExpress. - ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
@James: There's always Parallels (or VirtualBox on Linux) for that one or two apps that only run under Windows. - Eric P
I plan on getting a MacBook Pro soon but it's mainly because I want the best of both worlds via VMWare Fusion. A friend showed me his 17" MBP running Fusion and it's nothing short of spectacular. If I want to play a game that doesn't exist for Mac (which is become less and less common), bootcamp it. - Akiva
If you are buying a laptop, it's a no brainer (IMO), esp with virtualization. If you are buying a desktop, likely doing it for something specific (gaming, etc). Then you need to think a bit. If you're going to use it for documents, email, doesn't matter that you have. It's a person choice. I am a mac and linux guy who can somewhat tolerate Windows - Deepak Singh
"If you are buying a desktop, likely doing it for something specific (gaming, etc). Then you need to think a bit". You just don't want to say Windows! - stefan
Why not get the best of all worlds with a hackintosh :) - Tim Hoeck
Hi! I do feel that the Mac software and hardware is way superior to a Windows based PC or laptop in terms of ease of use, reliability , virus and spyware issues and stability. One of the reasons for this may be that Apple makes both the software and the hardware . I wonder why Apple does not follow the same strategy as MS and licence their OS to computer manufacturers like Dell, who are in any case tired of MS. - Vinay Bawri
I look like one lone Windows user, but with the experience I have since 3.1, I still love my customizing at each iteration of the product, and with SP3 on a specific striped down version to my needs with custom policies and all my portable apps running on my iPod... nah, I'll stay in my little 'Zu-PC' but I usually recommend newbies to Macs for stability and relative ease of use (lots of people I help doing tech support that looks somewhat used to windows tend to alter their PC easily with no real concern.) - Zu from AOD
And with JS on the web unchecked, it's dead windows w/ no firewalls... - Zu from AOD
I do gaming that's a point, but I'm a linux user too, macs just hasn't done nothing specific I especially needed and finding some weird open source freeware for a specific task just doesn't seem around the corner for macs (only a vision, not necessarily true) - Zu from AOD
For someone for whom computers are an indispensable part of life, a Mac makes all the sense in the world since you don't have to spend time taking care of the unimportant - things work when you need them to (mostly) and you spend less of your time getting your computer to 'behave'. For those who use computers only occasionally like my Dad, they make sense for this very reason too. Gaming is perhaps the only segment where a Mac isn't really the best thing and that too is changing gradually. - Parth Awasthi
Well, I guess that explains why I'm yet to see a Mac outside of Advertisements. - Yuvi

I'm not a SB hatr, bitchr, etc. When travelling, you can at least get a cuppa that falls within a certain range of expectation. I've long said that SB is the McDonald's of coffee. How they handle their administrative business is another thing all together. - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Says something about Starbucks when in their home area they aren't picked as Seattle's best coffee. - TDavid
@Chris and now that McDonalds is opening McCafe's across the midwest, there will be two McDonald's of coffee. :) - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Personally, I'm not a Starbucks hater. I think most of their coffee is pretty decent. I think some of their clientelle take it too extremes, but that's true of any business I suppose. I believe they got caught up in their own hype and expanded too fast (much like Krispy Kreme). But, with some good corporate governance, they'll pull through. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
@Jason apparently McDonalds does it not from good life - according to article on WSJ, they are about to change their USD1 menu - A. T.

I propose a reality show where we drop Mona N into radom communities throughout the world and see how long it takes her to become one of the most well liked and active participants. Each show would be fascinating....but really short I suspect.

how would you know it works if they are always on when you get near. I think Bill gates has something similar going on at his place, read it somewhere. - Javi Guerrero
I like the idea sharing idea but, not so sure Apple could come up with a cost effective way of pulling off your idea. I read something the other day that if I can find I will post a link but it was basically the same idea using hardware already on the market available at electrical supply stores. Every electrical outlet and switch in your home could be retro-fitted with devices that can be radio controlled remotely or from one switch in your home at the door. Depending on the size of your home it would.. - Chris Conway
cost any where from $200- for 1500sq ft to $600 for a 3000 sq ft. This would also cover divices like lambs etc, stuff that is not computer oriented. I know every one loves there new iphones but do we need it to wipe our ass to. - Chris Conway

Sounds like an X10 type controller with an iPhone app to control the base station. There's power control stuff at http://x10.com but nothing that the iPhone can control. I like your thinking Kevin. Apple, make it so! - Jim Bergman
I use X10 at home through a Perl program on CentOS (RedHat) called Misterhouse that I can control through my iPod's web interface. If you go on their mailing list you can see discussions about Bluetooth proximity sensing. MH is also available on Windows. - Ernie Oporto

The only issue is when you lose signal power wise or signal wise. It either has to have a 10 min. delay or a way to tell the device you are home when your phone cannot. - geekazine
Cool idea! One feature of this app is that if someone sneaks out of your apartment with your iPhone, you'll be notified by your appliances switching off! - Todd Logan
I've been using X10 for several years, and while not quite as automatic as Kevin's idea I can call into my base station via telephone and turn on or off lights or appliances, open or close drapes, adjust thermostat, etc. Great convenience, and also fun to freak out housesitters while away :) - JCunwired
First of all, GREAT IDEA! I love it! - Problem... This may be great for single peeps! If you have a family at home, and they are watching TV or whatever other item may be hooked to this device, and you decide to run to the store, then the house suddenly shuts down! Not good! There should be some sort of override capability! 5 Minute Countdown chime? - Something to ponder! - Michael Johnson
There could always be sensors within rooms to detect animals, children, etc. That could solve part of the problem. Then you could also have "family" accounts where you could attach various iPhones and devices. - Matthew Horton
