"Four actors take on about 150 roles in The 39 Steps, a fast and furious play that works as an absurdist comedy and a Hitchcock-style spy thriller. Claire Brownell plays three leading women in the national tour, opening Tuesday in the Palace Theatre. "The story is action-oriented, and the physical comedy is really sharp," the actress said. "Once it gets going, you can feel the waves of laughter coming off the audience." The 39 Steps was adapted by Patrick Barlow from the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, which, in turn, came from the 1915 John Buchan novel about a conspiracy of spies in prewar England. For those not familiar with the film: Scottish expatriate Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), falsely accused of murdering a female spy, eludes a nationwide manhunt and, accompanied by a reluctant blonde (Madeleine Carroll), tracks down clues about a mysterious organization called the 39 Steps. The theatrical version maintains the frenetic chase of the film but brings a lighter touch to the...

"The old-fashioned heroics combined with theatrical machinations seem to appeal to audiences of all ages, Aitken said. "People love to see four actors drive themselves into a frenzy in order to create illusions. This is very simple, scenically, if a bit insane. We do things with four trunks, three ladders, smoke, haze . . . and almost nothing. "This play is an homage to theatricality itself.""

calling Mac/iPhone users of Gmail... do you sync your Mac with your Google account and then use the native mail and address book apps on your Mac and iPhone, or do you find the web interface to be sufficient?
I ask because I'm soon able to qualify for a free upgrade to an iPhone from my carrier, but the gadget fan in me is torn between iPhone and Android. I pretty much live in Gmail and Google Calendar and so won't have any problems with an Android device, but as a Mac user, the iPhone keeps batting her eyelashes at me and flashing her apps...
- Andrew Terry
I use the native map & adress book and I sync with my google account (Exchange ActiveSync). It works fine but : numbers of new messages won't update in each folder (unless you open it) and I can't find how to sync the groups I created in google contact. The good thing is that you can subscribe or even sync multiple calendars (using caldav).
- Olivier Castets
Olivier - The "numbers of new messages won't update in each folder" is a global issue with the iPhone/iPod Touch. It's not just relegated to Gmail accounts. For some reason, the iPhone only uses push for the inbox; it won't download anything inside of other folders until you open the folder.
- Curtiss is not green
I use the native mail app and sync like Oliver does. I only care about my Inbox automatically updating so the multiple folders issue is not an issue to me.
- Matt Hilton
Yeah. Google Mobile Sync for iPhone us pretty slick. Aside from not supporting more than one group of contacts. The good thing is that you can still search The server for any other contacts that are in other groups and not synced.

I use gmail on the iphone and the webinterface at work because pop and imap are blocked so that i can't use native mail at work.
- Lode Nachtergaele
Hehe. I was really wondering about your sanity there Andrew.... :)
- Roberto Bonini
Search only on the webapp. It's still too slow for composing and browsing, and push is a must. Sometime, the whole page refresh as I switch from another tab, thus wasting time and getting annoyed - an unencountered feeling on the iPhone app. Meanwhile 95% of my iPhone time is spent on the mobile browser: FF, Reader, gNews FTW.
- Jérôme
from iPhone
I use neither exclusively, but I more frequently use the built in mail app because it is quicker and easier to use. When it fails or if I want to search or do anything non-basic, I use the web. Also, occasionally, either the web or imap fails. When that happens, the other is almost always available.

I use both interfaces. I prefer to use Mail, Address Book and iCal on the Mac but I use the web interface when I am work (using Windows).

Great. I think the family's computer might be dead/dying. When we shut it down, it started clicking incessantly and wouldn't power down all the way. Had to pull the plug. Now, when I try to start it up, it gets to the bios, then the screen goes blank. :(
That's what I think, too, but I'm having BIOS issues with the drives unplugged. I'm hoping the drive is the only problem (they don't store any important stuff on there, and I've got extra drives). We shall see.
- Curtiss is not green
That (or the CPU) is what I'm afraid of, Mark. I don't have any extras of those lying around. Memory I can handle, hard drives I can handle, optical drives I can handle, but power supplies and CPUs are going to require me to buy new stuff. :(
- Curtiss is not green
I got it booted up again and plan to leave it running overnight. I figured out that the clicking sound was coming from the power supply. For some reason, it's not stopping when the rest of the computer is shut down. Instead, the fan on the power supply keeps running and the indicator light on the front of the computer flashes rapidly. I'm guessing the power is cycling on and off really...

This sounds like temperature problem with the cpu, did you check for dust in the cooling system. I had this sort of problem with a home server once and it was resolve with a good vacuum cleaner.
- Olivier Castets
Thanks for the tip, Olivier. I did use compressed air to spray out the entire insides of the computer (there was quite a bit of dust in there), but I'll see if I can get a better angle on the CPU to see if there's any dust between it and the cooling fan. I'm having trouble figuring out how to unseat the fan so I can get to the CPU, so I'll have to keep looking at it.

Just noticed that Reader now allows grouping of people you follow! Wondering: is Reader going to become a competitor (instead of complement) to FriendFeed?

@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. Right now it's a manual process involving either a new Group/Room or Imaginary Friend. Should be 2 clicks tops.. Also see: http://friendfeed.com/alexsch...

MF/Kol = I live in Kingston on Thames. It's OK apart from the traffic (continually gridlocked) and the shops (girls just lurve them). Handy for getting into London both airports and out to the Thames Valley for work type things. Richmond Park and the river in walking distance is great too.

Andy, Richmond Park and the others around there are the appeal really. Good place to go photographing and cycling while being very close to London I think.

Teddington (across the river from Kingston Upon Thames, is where I think I'd like to live. Just 'cos it's cheaper than everywhere else around it. :-)

@Kol many years ago, we made the mistake of asking an estate agent in Surbiton whether it was any cheaper than Kingston. She replied 'No - of course not. We are on the fast line to Waterloo' and looked at us as if we were dog excrement.
- Andy C
I've checked rental prices in the area several times over the last 2 years and Teddington is definitely cheaper. I'm not buying, no way I can afford that. ;-) All a pip-dream anyway, need a steady job and I've not had that for a while. :-(

"It's been two years since Peter Berg confirmed he was attached to direct the third adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel Dune. Of course, the first adaptation was auteur David Lynch's avant-garde, torpid 1984 film, the second being Sci Fi Channel'sminiseries in 2000. But little has been said about this third attempt to corral the story of Paul Atreides and his family amidst a futuristic feudal interstellar empire as they take control of the lone source of spice melange, the most valuable resource in the universe. It's no wonder Dune has proved a worthy foe when condensed into film form."

Sure, the Dune universe is a rich, expansive environment, but what makes Dune, Dune is the interplay of the socio-economic, political struggles effecting the characters and the familial, localized emotional struggle of the main characters. Distilling the story into a base action/adventure story? It won't be a Dune that the purists will flock to, but it may, in reality, make a lot better...

Derrick, the Lynch version is much better (imo) in terms of a film, but the miniseries is much more faithful to the story. So it really depends. My advice would be to read the book (really, it's that good. It transcends genre) and then watch them both.

I recommend everyone to read the first book. It's not that heavy on sci-fi and it tells a very elaborated, compelling and rich story. I saw the movie and the mini-series beforehand and both pale in comparison to the greatness of the novel. I can tell you to skip reading LOTR and watch the movies if you don't have time because both offer compelling experiences but in Dune's case the screen versions are bad enough that I thought Dune sucked until I read the book. Now it's one of my favorite books of ever.

Dune is about empire, expansionism, marketplace monopoly, religion, duty and honour vs what is right and wrong, and revolution. The power struggles those entail. It happens to take place in a sci-fi-ish setting.
