"He's not much of a computing scientist either if he detests interactivity. However, all that GUI, database stuff is really a pain. It all seems badly designed or overly complicated somehow."

">This really is the difference between Computer Science and Software Engineering. There is no difference. Software engineering is a sham term. Computing scientists and so-called software engineers do essentially the same tasks. >Exhaustive checking of return codes/exceptions, well planned failure scenarios, etc. That is part of computing science. You have to plan for all cases and have pre- and post-conditions and be able to assert various properties of the program. Checking of return codes and exceptions is basically asserting various properties of the code. There's no such thing as a software engineer, it's a false analogy and needs to be discontinued as a term. The problem is that this redditor isn't looking at it from the right way. Databases and I/O can be fun. I/O lets you have fun with streams! Databases have nifty complexities of their own that can be explored."

"That's a stupid reason. Text-based configs should die in a fucking fire. Editing a config file directly is like editing HTML or XML directly. It shouldn't be done because mistakes are easily made. It's nicer to have a config utility that makes sure everything is valid. I've been burned by missing a semi-colon, a quote, a double-quote and other punctuation marks. I've been burned by misspellings as well."

"tldr; someone entered National Fearless Day and was disillusioned when Richard Branson tossed waxworms at the crowd. >I was concerned about the welfare of the worms and snakes and as it turns out my concerns were not unfounded. During the break between competitors Richard Branson grabbed two giant handfuls of worms and flung them at the audience. The crowd screamed and proceeded to trample the tiny, fragile waxworms to death. A horrible way for any creature to have to die and a callous show of disrespect for the lives of the creatures that Virgin was using to entertain with and promote their business. These worms are generally used as food for other creatures, but that is a part of the circle of life. Much as a meat eater would ideally prefer to eat a free run chicken who had been well cared for, these worms deserve respect and care even if they will ultimately be nourishment for another creature."

">What if I want to delete a certain type of image I won't be using anymore? Say I accidentally write 3000x3000 instead of 300x300 on an image gallery code, filling my quota with huge images. What can I do about it? Use your own *Personal* Computer to resize the image :) It may take longer but at least there's no quota ;)"
