Google Suggest and the right ad - http://glinden.blogspot.com/2009...
It's good for users, good for Google's money, but is it really viable? naive question: if users want to be led to their desired destination ASAP, why to bother them with biased results? If Google keeps satisfying users' need, then either companies will pay for a link that Google should highlight anyway, or Google will display a irrelevant result - evil! - Jérôme
Google may be confident in its adaptability, but if Suggest succeeds, they'll probably have to push sponsored link to the top. That should lead to unnecessary navigation and unintentional clicks. - Jérôme
As users get savvier and Google more intuitive, advertising in SERP may turn very intrusive sooner than expected. Social ads are probably a good alternative: we blame Google for irrelevant ads but our friends for recommending crappy products! Is Google ready to jump in social advertising? I doubt it: Friend Connect is far from being a success, Facebook is gaining users' trust and Twitter is slowly swallowing our life. - Jérôme
What's your opinion? - Jérôme
I think it would be interesting to extend SearchWiki to ads: votes, comments, explicit feedback. - Ionut
But I see very little benefit for users to feedback those ads, unless they're used to do so: Friendfeed's likes (you know http://friendfeed.com/onu...) or RT. But then, I'm just looking for results on Google, not sharing content. Search is rarely social. - Jérôme
Without launching/acquiring their Friendfeed, Google will have to reinvent their business. In the long term, Twitter, FF and co. will all have interest in developing their own advertising system. Google could then offer a monetization program for the least capable livestream services, but it would look like today's Adsense without Google Sites. - Jérôme
Jérôme : ads feedback would improve competition between ads. Imagine a kelkoo.fr right in google search results ! - stanjourdan
Their decision to open-source Jaïku hasn't provoked a multiplication of micro-blogging services. I don't see any other way for Google to buy the Big One, the Youtube for tweets. - Jérôme
Sure Stanislas, but why would you rate those ads? Why and would you really do it? - Jérôme
When I search - and most of my searches are 1-click only - I search for a result. Not for entertainment. I think Google knows that, hence its simplicity. - Jérôme
You do it *currently*. But Google has proven they could change our behavior. - stanjourdan
Who around you use SearchWiki? Only few I guess, and probably most of its users just pick some results for shortcuts. - Jérôme
With Adwords they can tell us : 2930 people bought this product (for example) - stanjourdan
Stan, I don't get it: how do I provide social feedbacks to Google for its ads? - Jérôme
good point, i'm blocked ;) - stanjourdan
Sure they've got a lot of data. But my question is "How can Google make their ads less intrusive if they are less relevant than the top organic result?". A good solution could be to tell you that your friend Joe liked this product. To do so, Google needs Joe's explicit feedback. Now, why would Joe tell Google that he liked a product? As E. Schmidt said, Google's business is to make its users leave Google as soon as possible. You're happy to tell Friendfeed your likes and opinions. But why would you do so to Google? What would be your motivation? - Jérôme
i would be motivated if it is my own product ;-) - stanjourdan
That's what the International Association of Professional Spammers said :D - Jérôme
The IAPS also says : lol :D - stanjourdan
I asked http://www.pastelinternational.com for a confirmation, and will update when I hear back. - Jérôme
You're also part of them? - stanjourdan
