Mad Dog Palin--The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America : Rolling Stone - http://www.rollingstone.com/politic...
Mad Dog Palin--The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America : Rolling Stone
WOW...This is not just another article digging at palin - it is THE article digging at palin and her 'cultural' significance. - Anna Haro from Bookmarklet
"The great insight of the Palin VP choice is that huge chunks of American voters no longer even demand that their candidates actually have policy positions; they simply consume them as media entertainment, rooting for or against them according to the reflexive prejudices of their demographic, as they would for reality-show contestants or sitcom characters. Hicks root for hicks, moms for moms, born-agains for born-agains." - Anna Haro
The truly disgusting thing about Sarah Palin isn't that she's totally unqualified, or a religious zealot, or married to a secessionist, or unable to educate her own daughter about sex, or a fake conservative who raised taxes and horked up earmark millions every chance she got. No, the most disgusting thing about her is what she says about us: that you can ram us in the ass for eight... more... - Anna Haro
"Democracy doesn't require a whole lot of work of its citizens, but it requires some: It requires taking a good look outside once in a while, and considering the bad news and what it might mean, and making the occasional tough choice, and soberly taking stock of what your real interests are." - Anna Haro
See, I believe that as a citizen you have the responsibility to pay attention to the people who will represent you and the laws they enact in your name. But with poor reporting and politicians doing so much behind closed doors, there's a dumbing down of American culture that's acceptable. How many people have you talked to who seem to have an opinion they want to spout on politics and in the same breath state proudly, "Politics bores me." or even worse, "All politicians are the same."? - Admiral Anika
"And none of it matters, so long as you remember a few months before Election Day to offer them a two-bit caricature culled from some cutting-room-floor episode of Roseanne as part of your presidential ticket. And if she's a good enough likeness of a loudmouthed Middle American archetype, as Sarah Palin is, John Q. Public will drop his giant-size bag of Doritos in gratitude, wipe the Sizzlin' Picante dust from his lips and rush to the booth to vote for her." - Trish R
And unfortunately, most of it is true (or at least I agree with it). - Trish R
Wow, that's a hell of a picture. After reading the first two paragraphs, all I could think was how badly Matt Taibbi wants to be Hunter S. Thompson. - Carla Thompson
Personally, I like Rolling Stone articles. But a word of caution.. they are always unapologetically extremely left-leaning. - Phil G
hahaha...Carla, I thought the same thing. - Anna Haro
The ironic thing is that the media is the primary cause of all this. Reducing politicians statements to sound bites where a few words from a larger speach can be spun one way or another. Politicians don't have to have grand ideas or positions, they just stick to hot button issues that play well on TV. Couple that with lobbyists and special interest groups to give them butt loads of... more... - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Of course J Phil. It's one perspective, one article, out of MANY. - Anna Haro
I honestly don't know what the terms "left" and "right" mean anymore in American politics. I try to figure out who has the best command of the facts and who is making the most sense. This article makes a great deal of sense. (If I must define myself politically with a label, it would be "progressive libertarian.") - Sean McBride
"Here's what Sarah Palin represents: being a fat fucking pig who pins "Country First" buttons on his man titties and chants "U-S-A! U-S-A!" at the top of his lungs while his kids live off credit cards and Saudis buy up all the mortgages in Kansas." - wow...harsh. - Chris Hollander
Very interesting read, though disturbing. I put my money on McCain/Palin winning the election. - Peter
@Sean McBride... right on. - LogEx
Damn. He really worked up a lather on that one. - Yolanda
hahaha @Yo - Anna Haro
I don't think I'd talk with him too much at a party. ;) - Yolanda
Classic: "After eight years of unprecedented corruption, incompetence, waste and greed, the party of Karl Rove understood that 50 million Americans would not demand solutions to any of these problems so long as they were given a new, new thing to beat their meat over." - Raoul Pop

ps recession - adolfo foronda
Oh wow, a coworker informed me about this article a few days ago!! - Terence
Taibbi *nails it* w/ the consumption of candidates as media entertainment. Infotainment has utterly corrupted news such that they are largely indistinguishable now. A huge disservice to the populace. And, of course, it results in this insane Reality TV show in front of us. - Ayşe E.
wow..such poignant words. The article still resonating even after reading it through. - Alan Le
Why is the entire country not going, "WTF? You can't find a person more qualified in the entire Republican party? REALLY?!?!" Her selection was condescending to our entire citizenry, and everyone seems to be rolling with it. - Robert Fischer
Why aren't more Republican women outraged that the party thinks so little of women that when they feel the need to add a vagina to the ticket, they don't give a damn about whether she's actually qualified? - Trish R
why aren't they more outraged? because they're living vicariously via the pit bull. they see her and say, 'she's just like me'. but prettier and i bet you they aren't willing to admit that. so they over-identify with her and i'm left saying, 'yea, but i wouldn't vote you president of a committee of 2.' - Admiral Anika
Liked only because of the picture, not because I have any interest in US politics. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
"But watching Palin's speech, I had no doubt that I was witnessing a historic, iconic performance. The candidate sauntered to the lectern with the assurance of a sleepwalker — and immediately launched into a symphony of snorting and sneering remarks, taking time out in between the superior invective to present herself as just a humble gal with a beefcake husband and a brood of healthy,... more... - Roberto Bonini
"The rest of Palin's speech was the same dog-whistle crap Republicans have been railing about for decades. Palin's crack about a mayor being "like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities" testified to the Republicans' apparent belief that they can win elections till the end of time running against the Sixties. (They're probably right.)" - Roberto Bonini
dear god, if you exist and hear prayers, please please, let there be some notion of civility return to this country in my lifetime. a man. - Nathan Eckenrode

What you PC people are missing out on...
Picture 2.png
On the left is Firefox on Windows XP. On the right is Firefox on OS X. Same laptop screen. This is why I feel yucky when I have to work in Windows now. Granted, I don't have ClearType installed on the Windows side. But it doesn't make things THAT much better. IE7 is even worse. - Paul Reynolds
Pay no mind to what that text actually says, I'm still editing it :o) - Paul Reynolds
I thought Firefox did its own text rendering regardless of the OS. Hmm. This clearly shows that I was wrong. - James (@willia4)
Meanwhile, I'm missing out on low priced commodity hardware and a large selection of game titles. (Figured I'd beat any Windows zealots to the punch) - Paul Reynolds
Windows: it's all about minesweeper. You think I'm kidding... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I have noticed things are a lot clearer on my MBP than on my PC. Font and graphics-wise. It's refreshing. - Araceli
Araceli - Yeah. OS X's text rendering is a trillion miles ahead of anything out of Redmond. - James (@willia4)
My fonts are on Vista and they look TONS better than what you are seeing. ClearType DOES make a huge difference to me. I can't use a computer without it. Reminds me too much of 1994. - Robert Scoble
Hell, I'd even take XP in VMWare over an actual PC any day - Dom Barnes
Why is there a fuzz filter on the one to the right? How annoying. :) - Daniel Bruce
Maybe I've been in glasses too long, but the OSX displays always make me feel like my eyes are out of focus... - Alex Conner
ClearType does make a bigger difference than I remember: http://i.friendfeed.com/b53b81b... - Paul Reynolds
wrong use of "you're" in the "If you don't understand these guidelines" paragraph. Should be "your" - Imabug
I have to say I far prefer the non-cleartype one. Is something wrong with me? =p - Daniel Bruce
imo, this discussion is of... dubious value. 1.) most folks would prefer the rendering that they're most familiar with- personally, I prefer the vista/ff rendering, and find the osx rendering artificially bold. 2.) the exact clear type (or osx font rendering) settings is hardware dependant. what looks great on your monitor may end up looking crappy when screenshotted and displayed on my monitor, due to things like pixel ordering, DPI, resolution, screen technology, etc. - Chris Hollander
This, this right here, beautiful text rendering, is the one single reason I'm lusting after OS X. Safari on windows has the OS X style rendering, so it's possible on windows; just that Msoft has adopted clarity over font smoothing. Joel from Fogcreek has a good article detailing how the company philosophy is reflected in the font smoothing choices: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items... - vijay
I went from programming full time (a heavy text reading occupation) exclusively on Windows for 8 years to OS X and it was something to get used to... it seemed blurry. But now Windows feels to aliased and clunky to me. - Paul Reynolds
How does it look on Linux? ;) When I first moved to the Mac, the fonts did feel slightly blurry, but they feel perfect now. Depends on what you've been used to. - Paul Grav
If that's all I'm missing then I'm pretty sure I'll survive. I can adjust my fonts in windows, turn off cleartype or turn it back on, so it'll be ok. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
At first I thought the point was showing that based on browser/OS sniffing, the Baker's Dog website WAS charging $4.95 to Windows customers and WAS NOT charging Mac visitors at all! Then I realized the same text flowed differently and was outside the screenshot. Now that would have been a new kind of Windows tax. - Micah Wittman
Hrmm... Micah... the wheels are turning. Maybe a discount if you're using Firefox (read: not IE) to buy your dog treats? :oB - Paul Reynolds
C'mon, XP is a trillion years old. Get Win7 and enjoy it's nice font smoothing. And here's a great article for those who is praising Mac font rendering: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items.... Mac and Win font rendering mechanisms both have advantages, Mac is more print-optimised, while Win is screen-optimised. - Kirill Petrovsky
You only need to activate ClearType and the page looks like it should. And yes, it makes a difference... - Flynn (Michael A. Volz)
so...we're supposed to spend $500 more for a computer that renders texts differently? I think I'll use ClearType or other fonts on Windows and treat myself to another tech gadget. - brainno722 (Peter)
Yes. - Paul Reynolds
Enable cleartype and yes it makes a tonne of difference. - Adi

25 minutes in, and I'm wondering when Blade is going to show up and start offing the cast. - Steven Perez from IM
OK, I need a brain break from all this emotional turmoil. Back in ten. - Steven Perez from IM
Ah, the things you guys miss when I go make me some tea. I came up with this awesome alternate timeline where Blade and Buffy show up and start killing off the town, just like AVP2. Actually, that movie sucked worse, but hey, I'm only half an hour into TWILIGHT. C'mon, mopey emo kids, don't let me down!!! Suck harder than AVP2!!! - Steven Perez from IM
aaaaaaaand, picking it up from the hospital ... - Steven Perez from IM
In the greenhouse now. They're having a fight. I think. I can't tell cuz they still have the same expressions on their faces all the time. - Steven Perez from IM
hahaha - Shevonne
I can't wait until you get to the "THIS IS THE SKIN OF A MONSTER!" scene. :D It's my favorite. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Seriously, so far, this is the slowest vampire movie I've ever seen. And that includes the 1931 version of DRACULA. - Steven Perez from IM
This may save me from having to watch the movie. - Katie is Frittering
I'm beginning to wonder if I accidentally got a SMALLVILLE episode by mistake ... oh, wait, there's the Superman reference. - Steven Perez from IM
Don't feel bad, the books move even MORE slowly. Honestly, someone needs to buy Stephenie Meyer some classes on pacing and plot-building. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
It is slow until, for just a few minutes, it's not. Then it's over. The visuals were pretty neat, though, and I enjoyed the music. Definitely wasn't worth $22.99 for a two-disc set. - Ladybug Heather
Holy cow. I'm starting to feel that dull buzzing that indicates brain damage. Usually happens when I find myself watching some teen soap opera by mistake. - Steven Perez from IM
Heather: soooooooo, ... you're telling me that the one fight scene from the trailer is pretty much all the action?!? Cuz if that's true, I'm gonna reach for the KILL BILL set and review that instead. :D - Steven Perez from IM
rofl I KNEW IT! - Erin @queenofspain
Erin: It was the booze! I swear!!! :D - Steven Perez from IM

I just watched the movie earlier today. I could have saved myself 2 hours and some change by just waiting and reading this. Oh well, live and learn. :) - Jason Shultz from twhirl
O. M. G. They're trying on dresses?!? Did I pick up the E! network by mistake?!? - Steven Perez from IM
Of course, the local tribe knows all about the vampires. Duh. Why do you think there are no vampires in Native American lore? CUZ THEY KILLED THEM ALL. - Steven Perez from IM
Lessee: doesn't like sunlight, eyes change colors, mopey whiney emo mood swings, lousy driver, ... and now telepathy. It's so obvious. Mopey Dude is a mutant. He probably blew in from the Xavier School. - Steven Perez from IM

GEEZ! FINALLY! Almost an hour into the film and she finally figures it out. She's a regular Lois Lane, this one. - Steven Perez from IM
(FOUR?!? Are they plotted as slowly as this movie?!?) - Steven Perez from IM
OK, pop quiz: you've just found out that the dreamy mope in your class is a vampire. Do you (a) stock up on silver and garlic and wait to ambush him and his clan or (b) go off into the woods to interrogate him all alone? If you chose (b), then this movie is for you! - Steven Perez from IM
(c) Ask him to turn me into a vampire - Shevonne
(d) wait for the Daywalker to show and save this movie. - Steven Perez from IM
(e) Go Buffy the Vampire Slayer on him and wait for Angel, a real vampire. haha - Shevonne
Great. Now he's the Flash. - Steven Perez from IM
Wait, so now he's a sparkly unicorn?!? - Steven Perez from IM
He's the world's most dangerous predator?!? Now I wish that an actual Predator would show up and school his mopey ass. - Steven Perez from IM
OK, that's it. I give up. No mas. - Steven Perez from IM
Seriously, this movie hurt my brain. The dialogue must have been written by the same 7th-grade lunch table thespians that George Lucas used to write the "romantic" scenes in ATTACK OF THE CLONES. I wasn't expecting anything Whedonesque, but geez, watching this movie was like watching a CW teen drama on Ritalin. - Steven Perez from IM
Oy. I'm gonna go crack open that bottle of 120 proof vodka and watch a pre-1999 John Woo movie to cleanse the palate. Congratulations, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN; you're still the best vampire movie from the last 18 months. - Steven Perez from IM
Oh, and Leather Donut? You were right, dude: ASS. - Steven Perez from IM

I loved Pitfall Harry. And even broke the score where you can send in a picture of the screen and they'll give you a patch. but dang my mom, she wouldn't take a pic of the screen so no patch for me. It was devestating! - Jason Shultz from twhirl

Why The FCC Wants To Smash Open The iPhone (via feedly) - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
This makes me think about the 80s when they were breaking up the Bell System. Part of the dispute was that you could only use AT&T approved phones that you leased from AT&T to access the public switched phone network. Here we are in 2009 and it's practically the same thing. You can only use the phones that AT&T, Verizon, etc. allow you to use to access their network. Of course, you could buy an unlocked phone, but let's ignore that for now. My point is, history is again repeating itself - Jason Shultz

how come I've got 573 "subscriptions" on Friendfeed when I've never signed up to follow anyone? Has to be worst Internet product in history.
did you import people from somewhere else? - mjc
Mmmm. Lovely post. It's got that old-fashioned, flamebait taste. - Mark H
if you imported from Twitter, you'd have subscriptions. Also, I'm subscribed to you on Friendfeed (I imported my twitter friends to FF so I can see your tweets here) - Karoli
worst in history... lulz - Yolanda

I would hope you would use something for a while and learn how it works before you pronounce it the "worst in history." Seems to be a judgement you're not really qualified to make. - Kimber Scott
Kimber: That's because he hasn't used the service and see's it as an alternative to FriendFeed rather then what it actually is a conversation agent - Nicholas James
Nicholas: You meant Twitter, right? Here are some of his posts from earlier today. He must have dropped in after having signed up a while ago and saw he had alot of subscriptions he thinks he never signed up for. Obviously, he doesn't realize if he imported from Twitter he autosubscribed to people he was following there. His posts: didn't express myself clearly on FB and TWT. Want to be... more... - Kimber Scott
Oh, what, someone who didn't understand basic import functionality is calling it the worst Internet product in history. *yawn* - AJ Kohn

Your 573 subscriptions are Twitter imported followers on FriendFeed - subscribed during registration. - AJ Kohn
If you are friends with people on Facebook, they are automatically friends here. I don't believe it is an issue with Twitter. - Louis Gray
@Louis: I think it's Twitter. Andrew doesn't have 500 Facebook friends and isn't friends with Books-A-Million on Facebook but is likely following them on Twitter. - AJ Kohn

"Chrome's in 2.0 on Windows and available on Mac and Linux; Apple's beaming with pride over Safari 4; Opera's still innovating with Opera 10; and we're all eagerly awaiting Firefox 3.5. With all these great choices, which do you use?" - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
Voted for Firefox - LANjackal
Chrome. Firefox for sites in wich chrome doesn't work - Roberto from fftogo
Chrome (WinXP and Ubuntu), then FF, and the odd work website that requires IE *shudder*. - Warren Butler
are they still even bothering with IE anymore ?? it just seems lost in the haze of half baked ideas and the past lol my vote gos for firefox but will move to chrome once google add extensions - Rollz Chamberlain
Currently use firefox but I will switch to chrome when it enables plugins - Terje Mikal Espedal
Chrome, with a tiny bit of Firefox. - Kol Tregaskes
I have Firefox, Chrome and IE8 installed but only use the first 2 - LANjackal from IM
Flock or firefox. Will use chrome once it includes most of my favourite pluggins/addons - Alistair (alpinefolk)
Chrome & Firefox. Will use Chrome more when it compares in features to Firefox. - Tanath
Was a big FF user but now hooked on Chrome. - Manuel Mas
Safari 4. Looking forward to Chrome (OS X) Final Build - Johnny
You do know Chrome is already blowing Safari away in speed tests on OS X, right? - LANjackal from IM

FireFox primarily and Chrome for certain heavily used web apps like FF, Gmail and GReader. - Adi
Chrome. FF when i'm doing web dev work. - Jason Shultz
FireFox on the work and home machines as my primary because of all the add ons I can have, that just haven't come to Chrome yet. Chrome secondarily. I used to use Opera Mini on my cell phone but switched to SkyFire for S60 browsing. - Miss Elle
Chrome2.0, Finding FF3.5 dead Slow(Using O.S windows server 2003)...I wish FF3.5 rocks....personally love FF. - Prabodh
Just lovin Chrome; fast and simple. FF was just too slow and buggy, but I do miss the FF add-ons. Still find a site or three that requires IE, but not very many these days. - Jeff
The proper abbreviation for Firefox is Fx, which is good because then it doesn't conflict with the abbreviation for friendfeed, among other things. - Tanath
opera still is the leader in features, the cntrl tab function shows every tab\ in a list, so easy to navigate, to go back to the previous tab, ctrl tab takes you by default back to the last used one..brilliant, user friendly, as always! - daviza
@tanath: I just Googled it and u're right. Thanks for pointing that out. The official abbreviation for Firefox is indeed Fx, not FF - LANjackal from IM
Most of my personal browsing is done on Mac Safari 4. By the time Chrome Mac arrives Snow Leopard will be out and Safari will have its own crash resistance, so no need to switch. At work I use every browser available except for Opera. I work mainly on Fx and using Chrome/Safari for personal browsing. - Paul Grav
I have a local problem with Safari 4 that hasn't been solved yet, so I'm using the latest Firefox 3.5 beta. It's really good -- much faster than its predecessor. First release candidate is coming soon. It's already quite civilized. - Chris Baskind
I'm using chrome3 for most things. Safari4 is a bloat monster like Firefox. I've determined that I can make safari suck up hundreds and hundreds of megs of RAM by just opening and closing the same web page over and over. (which is not really a caching issue, it's a leak). Haven't tested the Safari update I got last night yet. Chrome is a little faster in sustained use, but Safari seems... more... - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
chrome 3 - metalerik
I'm finding Safari 4 with the update is the best yet, as long as you disable all the annoying crap. - Amy℠
FF 3.5 beta4 on my Mac. Safari4 keeps crashing :-( - Peter van Teeseling
I really like Chrome. However, over the last couple of weeks, Chrome has been crashing every so often. Even though it's irritating, I don't forsee switching back to Firefox any time soon. - padric toman

Chrome! I couldn't deal with Firefox eating up all of my memory any longer.. - Michael Fidler
Firefox, although as chrome for linux becomes available in repos, will be using that because tab process isolation is important. Also use opera as secondary mobile browser - Mike Chelen from fftogo
