"Hi.
I think there's an element of emperors new clothes about reinstalling a machine. When I switched from CentOS 5 to Ubuntu 8 on one of my boxes I lived on it for a few days. After that I realized no matter what OS I run I spend 99% of my time in Firefox and virtual machines, so the OS doesn't really matter for me. Now it's just another box I use, rather than my preferred box.
Although I agree that Ubuntu has come a long way in terms of ease of use, I think one of the biggest things that's helped Linux on the desktop is the fact we do more stuff online these days. This frees us up from the constraints of the environment.

"I do everything on the internet or on VMs. If I lost my laptop tomorrow I could be back online in the amount of time it takes to buy the new laptop, install VMware Server and copy over the VMs.
If you can get into the habit of doing this it makes life very easy. :)

"They should just palm off their whole operation to Google.
Google University would set an essay, automatically search Wikipedia, create an essay for you, mark it, gmail the lecturer a link to Google Analytics, which would have a plugin for essay results.
People could automatically complete their entire degree in about 10 minutes with no need for human intervention. I call it progress!

PS. I think a lot of companies will start farming off their infrastructure to big companies like Google and Amazon. The resources they free up from mundane administrative tasks can be used to do something creative.
I know a lot of people will see this as a threat to their livelihood, but it wasn't long ago we were all working the fields guiding 1 horse ploughs.

"The incorporation of email into a lifestream would be good except for spam. As new communication methods become popular, spam hits them too. I've not been a twitter user for long, but I'm already starting to see an increate in twitter spam.
Currently, I get people asking questions on my forum, email, twitter, Oracle Wiki, Oracle Mix, LinkedIn etc. If would be nice if all these things were consolidated into a single uber-stream. :)
As it is, they are not, so I can either keep checking several services, or rely on email notification to tell me what to look at. For me, email is a useful notification service, more than a collaboration tool.

"The classic one is when you buy a new car. As soon as you buy it, everyone else seems to drive the same car.
I think a lot of this is down to how observant you are. Chances are that song is played in the mall every week, but you only noticed it because you heard it on My Name Is Earl, which brought it to your attention.
In the same way, when you buy a car, you start to notice similar cars for the first time. They were always there, but you ignored them.
That's my totally unscientific opinion. :)

"I guess the "dual posting" thing would me more to do with the Disqus plugins, rather than Disqus itself. The plugin would have to tie the blog comments to the Disqus comments... Maybe... :)

"Thanks for highlighting my quality spelling of Disqus (Discus). :)
I'm still confused. I guess what I really want it dual posting. Comments going to Disqus, but also stored in my blog so if I throw my toys out of the pram and get rid of disqus I still have a full history of comments, rather than a gaping hole. :)

Although I like the swag Oracle has given me over the years, I haven't yet received something from Oracle that meets an immediate need. Will they send me lemonade on a hot summer day? :) My favorite swag, by the way, was the Oracle OpenWorld 2006 bag; it's perfect for me. - Ontario Emperor
@ontarioemperor The OpenWorld bags are cool, but I have too many already. :) - oraclebase
