If you turned the slideshow off previously it's worth turning on, especially on touch devices. But it would be better if instead of showing a spinner until an image is fully loaded, it instead showed the image as soon as it's partially loaded so you don't spend as much time waiting. This would really help on 3G.

At the same time, the "edit entry" page could use attention. It's hard to embed youtube videos, for example, and the layout's look isn't up to the standard that the front-end pages have set now.

The appearance of speed is as important as actual speed, so if seeing the picture load makes it seem faster—even when it isn't— that's good.

Agreed. And in this case, seeing the picture load goes beyond the appearance of being faster. OurDoings has been using making progressive JPEGs since January 2011, so with photos uploaded since then you'll see the entire subject before the full-resolution image data loads.
