"A survey of male college students finds they prefer women of average weight and build. The 18-to-26-year-old men who participated in a study at Scotland's St. Andrews University came to that conclusion by looking only at pictures of faces. When looking at an array of head shots, the gents consistently singled out those that paired with either underweight or overweight body types as being both less attractive and less healthy than those that topped normal frames . There has long been a correlation between the perceived health of a face and its attractiveness, but this is the first study to tie a gaunt or plump visage to a negative impression of overall build. Will this finding finally encourage the fashion industry to move away from heroin chic and toward plus-size models? Don't bet your dinner of grapefruit and cigarettes on it."

This isn't about size in general, cause everybody has the right to his or her own body, but grapefruit and cigarettes? *dead*

I like a woman with meat. Anyone skinnier than me = pass

that would be nice, if i didnt watch guys pick the skinny girls over the average ones, every time i go out. lol
- Marissa
If I was straight, I can tell you right now, I wouldn't be going after Keira Knightley. I'm not knocking her, or her naturally skinny frame, if that's the case, but I hate that women are bombarded with pencil thin bones as if that's something to shoot for. I LIKES EM THICK.
- Derrick
I remember seeing this study before and it's hardly a definitive sampling. I think it's good to have some articles that counter the constant bombardment women/girls get that that no matter what - they're fat. OTOH, I think it's being just as bad to slam women/girls who are naturally very thin for being who they are. Let's just get to a point where we can accept that humanity comes in a...

Can I offer a weird and somewhat bubbling point... Does the stereotype that 'skinny girls are best' also effect men? Does it set a culture that the 'skinny girl' is a trophy to be obtained? Not justifying, just asking
- Johnny Worthington
What I mean is that girls like Megan Fox etc are held in such high worship that if one was NOT to find them attractive, it would somehow call that person's manhood into question?
- Johnny Worthington
1UP Spidra. Johnny, I also think you're on to something. It's as if a man's partner and her beauty are used to indicate something about him and his status.
- Derrick
It's like a spiral. Girls are told that THIS is the way you should look but boys also pick up on this. With surf magazines and sporting events with skinny girls in next to nothing, boys are imprinted with the idea that this is what is beautiful and what is to be desired. The idea of having your manhood or sexuality questioned in your teenage years would push you towards fitting into the...

Johnny, I think you have a good theory. In older men, it's called having the 'trophy wife'; after chucking their older, possibly weightier first wife to the curb. I'm thinking that mid-life crises bring many men back to adolescence!

Just a reminder that I have to be careful with her sometimes... We had a maid over and the bird was screaming... I got her out of the cage to bring upstairs... usually I hold her next to my chest but she ran up on my shoulder... and at the same time the maid was "being scary" cleaning the blinds... so she freaked and bit the closest thing, my ear.

I played it for a couple of months when it first came out. Then when everyone caught on to it, I quit playing. I have that app (along with all the others like it) completely blocked now.
- Jason Huebel
I've blocked all those apps in facebook, so I can have a readable stream with a low s/n ratio when I go in there. I'm not miserable, but I spend enough hours at a computer as it is, without trying to waste more time!
- Ian May
I played Farm Town for about two weeks. It was too much work for a "game," so I gave up. I never got into Farmville. My "friends" still send me all kinds of stuff from both games, though.
- Curtiss Grymala
I don't play games. Just don't like to. Every so often I post an announcement that I won't respond to your game invitation so don't take offense. People still hit me with "pillows" and "food" and whatnot. Have they MET me?
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I love Farmville....there I said it. If ya don't like it, tough squat. I also play Cafe World, Pet Society, Farm Town and Mafia Wars, even though Mafia Wars is bugging me lately. I know people get sick of the apps, but they are fun time wasters. :P I guess I like Farmville because I am bringing out my inner farmer, since I'm from the country originally. :P
- Mol, Time Warping
I don't play farmville, but I do play Enchanted island (nice passive rpg that doesn't really annoy your friends) and the Backstage games (did the artwork for a charity prize set in Scratch & Win). And Bejeweled Blitz kind of grabs me every once in awhile when I get really bored. Come to think of it, I don't really have an interest in facebook beyond those few games.
- April Russo (app103)
I don't play any games on facebook. I avoid most apps like the plague.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Me neither. I've got so many invitations to play it, it is not even funny :P
- Claudia Petrilli
I personally don't get the app craze on FB - I have a hard enough time just keeping up with people...tried at the beginning - lost interest.
- Robyn Hawk
Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging people who play the games. I used to play the trivia games on there, like the one about the TV show Arrested Development. I even played that infernal Lil' Greenpatch one cuz I found out they really do donate to environmental orgs. I just happened to see this abundance of notices about the game Farmville and it struck me as this huge craze. I'm glad I know how to hide those notices now.
- Laura Norvig
No Facebook games at all. In fact, I was somewhat appalled to find one of my AdGabber friends playing Mafia Wars. Although I suppose I shouldn't take it so hard - he's an agency type - not a geek.
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
In Italy we use to say: "Two good arms hijacked from Agriculture" and that's a very good reason NOT to play Farmville!
- marcoscud
Farmville won't show me all the screen, not just on my TabletPC, but on my desktop (widescreen) w/ Firefox. People tell me I can, er, was it resize or pop the screen out, don't remember? However, that icon doesn't make it into what little of Farmville shows. I prefer Farm Town, anyway. I don't want to be bothered with fertilizing and watering and all that stuff. If I want to do all that, I'll switch to real life. I don't even play Farm Town anymore; I like Castle Age. I SMACKED THE CRAP OUTTA THAT HYDRA!
- MiniMage, sheeple of FF
I've never played it, or it's ilk, either. Same deal with the various "games" on Twitter like SpamMaster, erm SpyMaster...

"Malcolm X's bisexuality is more than just a question of truth and historical fact. There has never been any black person of similar global prominence and recognition who has been publicly known to be gay or bisexual. Young black lesbian, gay and bisexual people can, like their white counterparts, often feel isolated, guilty and insecure about their sexuality. They could benefit from positive, high-achieving role models, to give them confidence and inspiration. Who better than Malcolm X? He inspired my human rights activism and was a trailblazer in the black freedom struggle. He can inspire other LGBT people too."

Steven Perez is a funny guy, and can cheer me up when I'm down.

My first public skype call was with Tad, Glen and the Amber - a lovely conversation with great people. Tad was bold enough to live stream his workstation software install expedition and is a friend to all; Glen is chalk full of incisive wit and has an easy going conversational style; and the Amber was open enough to admit she's shy but worked up the courage to get on the call anyway. Like I said, great people, and quite representative of all the good people in the land of friendfeed.

I had no idea when I started this thread that it would blow up like this. I think this is a clear example of the value of friendfeed: the relationships we build. Sure, we have differing interests, politics, social situations and opinons, but at the end of the day, what we come here for are the people. No one exists in a vacuum, and if they did, they probably wouldn't have a friendfeed...

It is hard to pick a single person but as stated...you all bring me much needed laughter. I especially LOVE the ladies room girls - you bring the essence of love. Thank you so much.
- Janet
Personally, I think Akiva Moskovitz rocks. He's one of the main reasons why I use FriendFeed. If it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't even be here.
- Akiva Moskovitz
not to sound too much like a Mutual Admiration Society, but edythe's feed was what got me hooked on this place. :-D
- Karim
Ha, there are too many awesome people here to list and compliment individually; but Denton Gentry, Kevin Johnson, and Morton Fox are all awesome and extremely skilled techies!
- i80and
The FF founders and employees rock pretty hard too thanks Paul, Bret, Jim, Anna etc
- Steve C
Lindsay D. and Kol Tregaskes are kind and respectful even when disagreeing with someone. Civility like that deserves a mention because it is not often the norm in the online world.
- Jim Hearts FF
Penny for her personality and her self portraits which are awesome and so real!<3 Dobromir, Richard and Michael who always wishes good morning ^^. Manuela, because of her sense of style what becomes to art, also a very lovely person! Nakachi, Girl, you rock my world! Stay as you are - you are wonderful! L4S who is so much fun and amazing person :) Will, cause of his kindness and cause...

Everybody already mentioned in this thread, plus Meryn and Joelle for being really smart and inquisitive about some of things I find particularly interesting, too. Or at least the way they discuss them. Not that I don't think that way about the rest of you, just no one had mentioned them yet.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Jim, yeah there's no need to be bitchy while disagreeing. Get your point over but don't be nasty about it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Mo Kargas for his awesomeness. (I hope that by honoring great killer robots my death shall be quick and painless once they take over the world)
- Jemm
i80and for his Linux postings, FFing Enigma for roller derbying, Mo Kargas because... the giant robot intimidates me.
- DGentry
echostreamer has solid integrity and calls me on my sh!t - highly appreciated

How did I miss thread? It needs a comeback. Thank you LB for the bump. If you think I might know who you are, the odds are high I love you and thank you for being around (even if you have moved on, in which case you won't see this, but it is important to mention nonetheless) and thank you for letting me into your lives a little bit *hugs*
- Michael W. May
I didn't see this the first time round either (but it looks like I was in NYC when this was happening). I have friends who I knew before FF for whom friendfeed has allowed me to know better and there are folks like RAP, edythe, and MwM whose posting and conversation have enriched my life and ignited my imagination. Thanks kids. And, of course, I love Sneezy but FF had little to do with that.
- Jason Toney
I really admire Kol Tregaskes, he's always informative and gets involved quite a bit with almost everything. Quite the most selfless individual I ever came across on the net :) ... Also Holden Page impresses me everyday because he's a younger individual with tons of interest in several subjects that most older users usually get into, he shows he's not afraid to learn and keep his...

I can't really say much about anyone specific, other than ya'll are the greatest and have helped amuse me through some very hard times over the past year or so, and a special thanks with much love goes out to Amber, the Random Time Lord for introducing me to FF and for putting up with me for this long.
- Tsali, The Native of FF
I totally like Louis Gray - Mike Fruchter - RAPatton - Worthington - CS Techcast - and tons of other people - thanks for making my use of FF enjoyable.

I don't care. As long as he/she is a good doctor, the sex doesn't matter to me.
- Holger Eilhard
I prefer having a female doctor. I'm just more comfortable with women in general.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
Dentists have always been male, every other doctor I've ever seen has been female.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
No preference... but historically, I've liked my male doctors more.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
does not matter as long as they know what they are doing...................
- VAL D.
I've never had a female doc. Not by choice, it's just kinda worked out that way.
- suzanne
from iPhone
I think my preference for femal doctors started when I went to a male OBGYN who called me into his office (after the exam), slapped a bible on his desk and laid a prepared sermon on me about the sins of premarital sex.
- Shannon
Like many guys, I've had the fantasies about the hot nurses and female doctors, but in all seriousness, I really don't care what sex the doctor is as long as they do a good job
- Ian May
I would rather have a female doctor so that when I need to "turn my head and cough" it would brighten that day
-
Ive had all male dr's all my life .. and recently had to switch to a female Dr .. she's great ...
- johnpiercy
I've only had four doctors all my life actually. All male. The first and third are dead now. The second one got struck off.
- Ian May
Aw man, I read this as "I prefer a sex doctor." The regular kind doesn't seem as fun, no matter what their sexuality is.
- Noah Belson
I ultimately want a good doctor, but I must say that I really like my current doctor (who happens to be female). It's nice when the doctor knows first-hand what it's like to deal with the speculum.
- Katy S
@Shannon - That is AWFUL! I hope you let him know what you thought of that "treatment". Geeze. I prefer female OBGyn because I had a bad experience with the male one I had when I was pregnant. I am currently in need of a GP but my last one was male and I really liked him (he moved his office across town though so I had to quit seeing him). I would probably pick a woman if I have to choose one out of the insurance directory, but I'll take either for a GP if they have a good recommendation.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I'm just happy to have a doctor that will stay at my surgery for more than a few months. Seems every time I get a decent doctor and they get to know me and my particular foibles, they up and move to a different practice. I'm beginning to get a complex :-)
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
I like having a female doctor, my only problem is that I find it hard to discuss certain things with her. Fortunately I can book appointments with one of the male doctors at her office if need be, yay socialized healthcare!
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Having lived with both tax-based, and insurance-based healthcare, I know which one I've been most happy with, both for me and my family
- Ian May
With doctors I don't care so much, but I only want a female dentist. Why? Because my mouth doesn't open very wide, and the spaces between my teeth are really tight, and I only want someone with dainty hands mucking about in there.
- cecily
I'd prefer a female GYN as she would be more likely to understand how things "feel" down there. I have a male GP who is as young as my Kid and I think he's great because he's one of the new school who acts as a partner to the patient, not an authority figure. And he is going to outlast me, I hope, and not move on to a fancier practice.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
The last female OBGYN I had wore an engagement ring the size of a golf ball. She double gloved that hand but it still wasn't particularly... Comfortable =/
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I have no preference. A female gynecologist once told me my periods were bad because I am a redhead. Several years later I saw a male doc for the same symptoms. He immediately suspected endometriosis, a condition that could be improved with surgery, he operated and my life improved drastically. Male, female, I don't care if they are competent.
- Heather Solos
Guy doctors. Female doctors are evil. </hyperbole>
- Anika
I don't think I would care, but I've only ever had a male doc so can't really say for sure.
- Kenton
I've always had male Internists for doctors but the majority of my Ob Gyns have been female. Kind of prefer it that way.
- Bonnie Foster
from iPod
No preference. My GP and OB/GYN are both male.
- Mellissa Jane
"The Slough branch of Wernham Hoggs is hosting a small party to welcome the new intake from Swindon following the merger. David Brent introduces his new boss, Neil, who used to be his equivalent at Swindon. Jennifer, his old boss is also there for the handover. Brent is confident his welcome speech will be a huge hit - it contains some reliable jokes and some of his finest impressions. If that fails, there's the one about the royal family and a black penis."

What actor do you think is the best at playing both good guys AND bad guys? For the purpose of discussion, "good" guy can mean "funny" as well, as long as it's a definite foil to the evil parts they've played.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I find it interesting that everyone we've named had been male.
- Katy S
Doh, I forgot Christopher Walken!!! Katy, he was on my original list when I first had this conversation 10 years ago... Oh, and I figured all males was because of the verbiage 'actor'. I'd have to mull it over for actresses (they don't always get as great a range of roles =/ )
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I know - women don't get the same range. I figure the word actor had something to do with people's choices, too.
- Katy S
A lot of good mentions here. Rickman would have been the first to spring to mind for me. Oldman is fantastic, though. He's absolutely protean. Kathy Bates has played both good and bad well.
- Spidra Webster
Someone might have to fact check for me (as I'm not really a film/TV buff): did Joan Collins ever play nice/funny? Did she do it worth a damn? If so I'd say she's up there!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Hugh Jackman. If you've never seen "The Prestige", DO EET.
- Spidra Webster
Tim Roth, He's got the rough love good guy and the downright nasty bad guy in him.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
John Lithgow. He's brilliant as both the funny man and the villain.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
DAMN! I forgot the reason I had this train of thought in the first place: I saw Tim Curry in a Rocky Horror clip on TV and he's on my list.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Where have you seen Jimmy Stewart as a bad guy?
- Spidra Webster
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a famous example of Stewart as a bad guy. Vertigo is a great example of him as a twisted character - he's extremely sadistic at times.
- Sarah is Novembery
I can see that, MVB. Not to mention she went from streetwise trollop to naive rube one show right after the other.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Denzel Washington. He doesn't play bad guys enough, though.
- cecily
It's been a while since I saw Liberty Valance. Guess I forgot. I'm not as big a fan of his westerns as I am of his other work. Early in his career, Stewart was actually cast as the male ingenue. He even sings in "Born to Dance". The studio didn't know what to do with him yet.
- Spidra Webster
Alan Rickman, Glenn Close, Amanda Peet, James Stewart, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin
- Helen Sventitsky
Tough call but Anthony Hopkins because you have to clarify the definition of evil and whether it is done out of wickedness or weakness. For instance, take the role Macbeth. He clearly does evil but it is out of a tragic flaw, he's aware that its wrong but can't seem to stop himself, even at the end. But you pity him because he knows and its eating him away from the inside out. But the...

And yet Anthony played C. S. Lewis in "The Shadowlands" a man of God and Christian apologist so far removed from Hannibel as to be in heaven away from hell. The love he showed for God and his wife as he cared for her during terminal cancer till her death was the full spectrum of the human experience of love and joy in the midst of grief
- Melanie Reed
When Hopkins plays good characters there always seems to be something lacking there. Why? His eyes: they're too smart to reflect only pure goodness. Whereas Spacey, oh my, he can play devil or saint as he chooses, although he likes to walk the line between both. Take his defining role for instance: Keyser Söze. He has you fooled right til the end into believing he's the kindest character of all. Then, suddenly, the hint of a smile...
- Jordi Soler
Jordi, I like that you caught that! There is a moment in the film "Shadowlands" where Joy has just learned that she has cancer and its incurable and she looks up at him after leaning the truth from him and says:"You're looking properly at me now. You never looked properly at me before." And its true. Hopkins does an amazing job just with his eyes at that moment.
- Melanie Reed
:) How did I know that you were going to pick "The Sting" Matthew. I can almost here Joplin's "Solace" in the background. But are you sure about "Quint" ?! *squints*
- Melanie Reed
@Melanie: I'll have to rewatch "Shadowlands". Must confess that I found it quite boring the first time I saw it (long time ago). But seriously, Hopkins has some issues when trying to portray ambivalent characters (take "Human Stain", for instance). On the other hand, he is perfect when he has to play evil masterminds as the one in "Fracture".
- Jordi Soler
Jordi, I recall the Human Stain and chalked that up to wanting to pay some bills or an agent somewhere. Anthony is a bit of a conundrum in the roles he takes but then again, its a business. He does seem to excel in roles calling upon his ability to play the divided soul: Magic, Guilty Conscience. And I think it is this soulful ambidexterity that allows him to go either way or in the...

If you want to see Hopkins as a truly likable and sympathetic character, watch "The Fastest Indian". You root for him the whole time.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Tina, I have been wanting to see that and several things kept getting in the way. (my dvd drive died) Now that I have a DVD drive back in a laptop I can reserve it from our library. Thanks for reminding me! :)

Cary Grant is my number one. In a close second is Brad Pitt. Johnny Depp is good, too. I also like Guy Pearce for this. Kathy Bates and Hugh Jackman are good mentions. Robin Williams is also a good pull (he's played some really disturbing bad guys).
- Curtiss Grymala
Agree, Alan Rickman, Anthony Hopkins......and most definitely Gene Hackman!
- Bonnie Foster
Robin Williams has played a villain in "Insomnia" (the American remake of a Norwegian film) and "One Hour Photo"
- Spidra Webster
I would say Deniro, but I think even his "good guy" characters are still kind of frightening and intense.
- Curtiss Grymala

Ian McShane. Have a look at his portrayal as "swedgin" in Deadwood.
- Terry O'Fee
Tim Curry was the first that came to mind. Many other good ones mentioned, Alan Rickman is high on my list. It's also interesting how many of these people are attractive, moral ambiguity must be a turn-on... weird.
- Lo
what about Johnny Depp and John Travolta? so mainstream but pretty diverse catalogs...
- Robyn Hawk
I said Johnny Depp, and quite a few people mentioned John Travolta.

Finally saw the Slap Chop Rap commercial again (almost thought I'd imagined it!). It's so horrid I just HAD to share with you all =D - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
Only difference: the one they show on TV doesn't include the old school rap video. They cut in a guy in a rabbit costume doing the Running Man *dead*

I never get sick of this. I could watch it on a loop.
