What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:)
- Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess.
- Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up?
- Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair
- Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :)
- Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that's so awesome. FB's an awesome company to do business with.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal?
- Mitch
...congrats.can't wait to see what happens with both FF and FB as a result of this.

Please try to keep Friendfeed like it was if they let you. Either way, congrats on the financials!

Congrats and best wishes for the future.

For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :)
- Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!
- laosan
congratulations! keep the innovation coming...
- ozlubling
VERY happy for you guys. Possibly even owe you one or two. Are we getting FriendPhone next?? Think Mark should seriously think about 'Friendbook' :)
- Charlie Anzman
Congratulations to you and your team.

just showed the pictures to my students and they were like, "they look like normal people!" Congrats on the deal, onward and upward!

Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF.

Congrats Paul, Bret and the rest of the team, this is awesome news! The big question on everyone's lips is: Who gets to have http://facebook.com/paul? :)

Congrats, and thanks for taking us all on such a terrific ride! Big ups. :)

I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers.
- Steve Gillmor
My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)
- Chris Loft
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.
- Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.
- Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.
- Shane Gibbons
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done.
- Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.

Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now !
- Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely.
- Ovidiu Predescu
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out

@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM

But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode.

Frankie, a lot of us use FriendFeed and are concerned about where things are going from here. As I said in my comment above: I'm happy for the staff but displeased with who they chose to sell to. I'm perfectly capable of feeling both emotions at the same time.

Isn't it standard operating procedure to shoot action in continuous mode and then pick the best shot afterwards?
- Peng-Toh
For action shots, your reaction time isn't fast enough. I usually switch to manual exposure and shoot continuous. Works for kids too.
- Peng-Toh
I don't like continuous mode, there's just too much work involved after the fact. I'm used to shooting landscape, where you work on composition and press the shutter button only once. For action shots like in autocross, I evaluate the composition I want to end up with by watching several cars pass by, then follow the car as it arrives at the spot. Here are some of the shots taken this...

- Ovidiu Predescu

I guess for auto-x, you get cars into the same position repeatedly, so your method works. Won't work for kids or soccer or other high speed sports.
- Peng-Toh
For some reason I always have my camera set to continuous mode by default, even when I'm shooting landscapes or static scenes. I think it's because I often exposure bracket, and I also sometimes play the what-is-the-longest-exposure-I-can-get-away-with lottery.

Wow, major congratulations! Your time off is now going to be put to good use :)
- Ovidiu Predescu
It was already dead. :-( I tried swapping it before returning it, but whatever killed my power supply also killed my 1GB stick!
- Piaw Na
Time to switch to your eSata RAID + mozy solution. May be you can sell your nv+ and buy a 4 harddisk eSata enclosure.
- Peng-Toh
I have a ReadyNas as well. Recently however I built an additional computer for backups and video encoding. It is a Xeon-based system with ECC memory, with a massive RAID 5 array of disks. It runs Ubuntu 9.04 server and backup on it all the Macs in my house. Let me know if you're interested in specs, I can give you a list of the components I got.
- Ovidiu Predescu
I can't switch to eSATA whole sale, since the NAS serves as a file server as well, and I'd rather have a low power machine be always on. Ovidiu, how much power does your Xeon-based system suck down?
- Piaw Na
eee pc has no esata port. :-( I'm not worried, I still have 3 years of warranty left on my system.
- Piaw Na
About 60W with 4 disks, 75W when I do video encoding.
- Ovidiu Predescu
Ovidiu, that's very impressive! OK, send me your specs. Though my guess is I think I'll run OpenSolaris and ZFS instead of Ubuntu.
- Piaw Na
Wow, nice. That's not more than the NV+.
- Peng-Toh
Just checked out ZFS. I like the checksuming, copy-on-write and snapshots. Why isn't zfs more popular?
- Peng-Toh
It's very popular, but there are no commercial implementations for it other than from Sun. Linux has a port, so does BSD, but they have a reputation for being buggy ports. When it comes to file systems, you want to be very conservative. Apple was supposed to have it in Snow Leopard, but they pulled it at the last minute. My guess is that getting all the details right on ZFS is hard.
- Piaw Na
MPL license on ZFS is incompatible with GPL license on the Linux kernel. No hope of ever seeing it on Linux except through Fuse. btrfs is the oracle sponsored alternative. Great trick on Sun's part to keep Solaris independent of Linux :)
- Peng-Toh
Yeah, but that wouldn't stop Apple (or any other hardware vendor) from implementing it.
- Piaw Na
And to think Bush was about to bomb this country! People are genuinely angry at what is going on, very likely massively rigged election results.
- Ovidiu Predescu
"Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who wields ultimate power, urged all Iranians "including yesterday's competitors" to support the re-elected president." - Jeez, this is a sure way to lose the respect and trust of your people. It is also very suspect that Ayatollah, as Supreme Jurist, didn't investigate the other candidates' contestations about the results.

Until not long ago there was a huge farm on Grant Rd, in the middle of Mountain View. I haven't seen it running lately, I wonder what happened.
- Ovidiu Predescu
I was sold on the idea of potentially starting our own farm by seeing a chicken riding on top of a goat. So cute!
- April Buchheit
That and watching a chicken chase after some ducks. Again, so cute!
- April Buchheit
See there on the right, in the distance? I think that's a llama.

LED display on your bike wheel. You can render text and images, a small on-board computer controls a set of LEDs placed on the spokes of the wheel.
- Ovidiu Predescu
Most of the time I break on a straight line. I'm running on street tires, and the car understeers a lot.
- Ovidiu Predescu
You can tune your suspension. Add some toe-out for oversteer. Stiffen the rear. Higher air pressure on the rear.
- Peng-Toh
I ordered some camber plates, and I'll try to increase the toe-out. At the BMW autocross last Sunday (May 17, 2009) I actually decreased the rear pressure by 5 psi compared to the front (40psi front, 35psi rear), and got the car to turn much better. Counter-intuitive, but worked.
- Ovidiu Predescu
Tire pressure is very hard to tune. It depends on your driving style. I like my rear suspension and tire pressure hard and slide around the track :) I think you are not doing much sliding. Instead, with a softer rear, you get a faster forward weight transfer when you brake for the turn and that gives you better grip in front. More camber is good, up to a point. For auto-x, how do you determine your best camber setting?
- Peng-Toh
Talking about sliding, my s2000 used to do perfect 4 wheel controlled slides on fast sweeping corners when it was stock from the factory. Very well tuned suspension. Very impressive for a stock car. After a bunch of mods, it now understeers a little. Trying to get it back again for the next trackday. Too bad, Honda discontinued the car.
- Peng-Toh
I take my car to the Malaysia Sepang F1 track regularly. No racing. Just trying to improve my driving skills.
- Peng-Toh
How does that work? You just show up, pay a fee and use the track on a track day?
- Private Sanjeev
There are a few clubs locally that runs track days. The biggest one is Traction Circle Club. You need to sign up in advance. There are also open track days run by the Malaysia side.
- Peng-Toh
Sliding in autox makes for a fun course, but doesn't give you good times ;) I like to do slight oversteers in sharp turns, just to reposition my car for the following straight. The stock M3 however is hard to control.
- Ovidiu Predescu
On the stock e46 M3, the camber cannot be adjusted, which is a major bummer. On the camber plates I got, I can adjust the camber to a maximum of -3 degrees. I suspect I'll set the camber at that level and keep there even on the street. I also need to increase the toe-out, the front tires wear out too little on the inside compared to the outside.
- Ovidiu Predescu
Your front tire wear shows that you don't have enough camber in front.
- Peng-Toh
The fastest way through the corner is with a little bit of sliding, keeping all four tires at the optimal slip angle for maximum grip. The sliding also keeps the momentum up. But you need the car to have neutral handling. It is very hard to consistently push all four tires to the limit if your car is not neutral. At Sepang turns 7 and 8, with stock RE050 tires, if I get it right, I hit...

Sounds like an awesome tool, thanks for pointing it out! However on my MacOS X 10.4.11, it keeps asking me for GrowlHelperApp.app. What is that and why does it need it?
- Ovidiu Predescu
Everyone should have Growl! iTivo isn't working for me for some other reason that I haven't figured out. Oh well.
- Amit Patel
Yes, I did drive it for one run. It has fantastic acceleration when driving in a straight line. For autocross and the course we had on Sunday in particular, the car felt heavy in turns with a tendency to over-steer. In my only run I did a 46.650 seconds, while in my car (BMW e46 M3 convertible) my best time was 45.585 secs. I guess with some more practice I could have easily done under 46 secs.
- Ovidiu Predescu
1238kg isn't heavy. It is no Elise but is way lighter than an m3 :) More importantly, is the weight at the right place? Is it between the axles near the CG? Is it low?
- Peng-Toh
The car is very low indeed. The batteries are in the trunk, as you can see in one of the photos in the album, but I'm not sure what the weight distribution is. Overall it's extremely fun car to drive.
- Ovidiu Predescu
I guess the problem is that the batteries are in the trunk. You are feeling the tail heavy nature of the car. Not the weight. Your future GT3 will have the same feeling. Great for people who likes to slide around the track :)
- Peng-Toh
No photo info? Nice pics though. Makes me want to travel again.
- Peng-Toh
The Lightroom Picasa exporter must have screwed up the EXIF info. Most of the shots are taken on Velvia 100 slide film. My film camera (Canon EOS 1V) records info about shots in an internal memory. I wrote a program to extract the info and apply it as EXIF to individual scanned pictures, so I'd very much want the info appear :)

Are you talking about the digital transition? If so, if you have a cable hook-up to your tv you won't need the box.
- Sarah Peterman
Odd. Maybe I'll have to switch someday but for now I'm happily free of cable boxes (and I use Comcast).
- Amit Patel
Seriously, CableCards are the way to go with (Comcast + TiVo)!
- Jeff Eddings
In my area Comcast are converting all but the most basic channels to digital. I ended up getting a TiVo HD and CableCards. It was really straightforward to install, and is so much better than the Comcast DVRs. Here's a related article about a similar thing Comcast are doing in another part of the US: http://www.oregonlive.com/busines...
- Simon
It's now come to my house. I've lost channels 40 through 60. I haven't decided what I'm going to do about it. TiVo HD with my 17" TV seems like overkill.
- Amit Patel
I think we are going to suck it up and use comcast's boxes. I'm tired of fighting.
- Michael Sippey
tivo hd all the way, dual tuners and many extras, plus it's only a little bit more than the hd box rental.
- Paul Lindner
When people talk about this, I always ask. Add up how many shows you watch regularly, then figure out how much it would cost you to *buy* those shows on Amazon VOD/Roku or iTunes/AppleTV. Then figure out how much you spend per year on Comcast ($50/mo? $75/mo?). Subtract. Does it still makes sense for you to rent your TV service from Comcast rather than just buying what you want? I'd be curious what your costs on both sides would be.
- Kevin Kuphal
get rid of liveTV, plonk in a small and silent machine to use the internet. problem solved ;)
- alphaxion
Cablecards or just cut the cord and go Boxee/iTunes/Netflix Instant Queue/Amazon/Bittorrent/HD Antenna
- Kevin Fox
There aren't many shows I watch regularly. I discover lots of good shows because the effort of changing channels is so low. Right now I'm watching a show about pyramids in Egypt. Would I ever discover this show on my own? No. Would I bother buying it even if I discovered it? No. When renting (TV, Netflix, local library), I'm *much* more willing to try out new things. I get to browse and...

Did this just show up for everyone? I posted this back in March. We ended going with new HD Tivos. Good stuff but expensive.
- Jason Shellen
Internet only is great if you don't watch financial news or sports. Unfortunately, I do watch them. We've had this conversation before on FF though.
- Cristo
I mainly get Comcast so my kids can watch some cartoon channels, and for some shows I cannot get on the Internet immediately after the TV showing. Some 2 years ago I was so frustrated with Comcast's box, I decided to buy the Tivo Series3 recorder and go with CableCards, which was the only option available at the time. I never looked back: the interface is so much better, the system works as expected and without random crashes and slow-downs. Yes, it's more expensive, but well worth my time.
- Ovidiu Predescu
TiVo works great in the main viewing areas. Not so great for other places like in the kitchen where there's not much room.
- Cristo
