"I don't want to sleep on the floor anymore. I want a proper bed and live where the air does not smell of poo. I have seen what it is like in America. Here, there is garbage everywhere, people get angry, swear and shout. I have realised how bad life is here. I just want to get out." - Karen Padham Taylor from Bookmarklet
"Meanwhile, both Rubina and Azharuddin continue to wear their Oscar clothes and pine for life in America" - Karen Padham Taylor
God, there's something wrong with this. These kids are traumatized. They were trotted out to LA as showpieces and now they can't live a normal life anymore. Is the production company and the Mumbai housing authority going to give them a flat, as promised? "I cannot believe these kids have just been left like this after being taken to Hollywood. It is bound to affect them psychologically," said social worker Sanjay Bhatia, who works in the slum. - Christopher Chung
So, not taking them to the Oscars was a better idea? Uprooting them from their only known social construct and plopping them in front of Brad & Angie's house? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Much better to see what is possible and strive for it in anguish, rather than be satisfied with the status quo. Coming from a lower middle-class background in India, I have bought old Fortune magazines from wastepaper shops for two rupees to read up on what was happening. Yes, it made my then condition seem like hell, but heck I would not be here now if I had not known what I wanted. - Mahesh CR
This is so sad! - April Buchheit
If you never realize there is something better out there for you, why would you climb out of the crap-hole you're in? - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
That's really sad... I have been living under a rock and don't know much about the movie but didn't they make any money off of it since it was so successful?? - Lindsay is in 20-ten
Lindsay, seriously, that's the part I don't understand. I would have thought they'd have made at least enough money for a "proper bed" and a place to put it, at least for a while... - Jason Wehmhoener
Honestly, it sounds like $1K would make a big difference in their lives... they didn't even make that much?? - Lindsay is in 20-ten
back to School and back to the Slums - bcultral
Doesn't most of the responsibility fall on the people behind Slumdog? They had to make a few extra dollars that they can pay these kids. Why aren't they doing it?!? - grant fox
I thought I read somewhere that the producers of this movie were buying houses for the families of all these kids. I need to try to find that story. - Trish R
Perhaps this is a stretch, but how is this any different than any of the kids throughout the world who get used by large companies to manufacture products that we use in the West? Danny Boyle and co. are eating very well right now. - Cee Bee
If they're child actors, the money would've been paid to their parents. No matter how much the children made, the production company has no control over how the parents opted to spend it. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
but do the same rules apply in India as they do here? from what I understand it would take a very small amount of $$ to make their lives better. The child actors in Slumdog were a significant part of the movie, and one could argue that they were the better actors as well (besides Freida Pinto, but I digress...). - grant fox
Sounds to me like the Indian government said they'd find houses for them and then backed out of it. Based on the photograph of the youngest boy's father hitting him, I'd guess his parents are pocketing the money and the officials are looking the other way. - Jason Wehmhoener
Mahesh: very powerful statement. This whole story makes me sad, partly because of how spoiled we are as Americans. - Robert Scoble
From the article: His father is also saying he wants more money for his son's film role. In addition to school, the kids were paid for their work and have trust funds set up for when they turn 18. - Nine
At least they are in school. I hope they do something useful with their trust funds. - Jason Wehmhoener
How sad. But then again, so many kids never have any opportunities. - Andrew Pass

OMG, alarming oO - Dennis R.

Heheh, and after picking the locks he's faced with a very large hound looking him straight in the eyes and a terrier jumping for his b$lls... Somehow I think the locks are the least of his worries. - Henk de Kruyff from twhirl
Lock picking tools are illegal?? What about crowbars and bolt cutters? - Paul Grav
All burglary tools are illegal. If they think you are carrying crowbars and bolt cutters to break in somewhere, they can arrest you. Of course, there are legitimate purposes for those tools, too. Lock picks are just for picking locks, so you better have a really good reason for carrying them if caught (e.g., you are a locksmith). - Brian Hawthorne
lockpicking tools are illegal because it's so damn easy to open for expamle a samsonite suitcase or a bicicle lock. - and the guy in the video is really well trained, a newby takes 3 to 5 minutes to open his first lock. - pm10
I always wanted a set of those tools when I was a kid watching private eyes breaking into bad guys' houses. :) - Steve Lowe
Carrying bolt cutters is a little more obvious than these few tools. He should throw in a third minute showing the liquid nitrogen trick and the bic-pen bike lock trick. - Indio Apache from twhirl
Wow, this makes picking a lock look far too easy... He even picked a combination lock?!?!?! - Walt Ruppar
Just confirms... locks are for honest people. :-( - TranceMist
I saw him pick Loch Ness. Now that was effin' wild! Then he picked his nose and that was kinda gross. - Christopher Harley
this is really pretty appalling to watch. i assume standard dial combo locks are harder to pick. as for the tools, meh. making them illegal is hardly sufficient to protecting users w/ these types of locks. - MikeAmundsen
Why aren't guns illegal then? It's absurd that lock-picking tools are illegal. Mere possession shouldn't prove you're ready to break the law. - thepete
The combination lock was the easiest. Under one second. The last one required three tools and was a little more fiddly than the rest, which were all done in a couple seconds. Scary. In other words, you can't really put your trust in locks. Makes you wonder what kind of locks you _can_ trust, if any. - Rick Cogley
@Rick: first lock was a keyed 'door'-style lock, not a combination lock. - MikeAmundsen

Interesting. Messages go from friendfeed to Twitter in seconds. But Tweets to friendfeed? Delays for 30 minutes or more.
Steve Gillmor says that Twitter says the problem is on their end and that they are working on it. Been like this for several days now. Sigh. - Robert Scoble
I think it's a conspiracy! ;-) Did anyone ever get an honest answer out of Twitter as to why this is happening? - Jeff P. Henderson
Days? More like weeks or months. If they were thinking, Twitter would reverse that latency so input to Twitter was fast and outbound was slower - Christian Anderson
It is because FriendFeed is posting directly to Twitter via the twitter API. Twitter is NOT posting to FriendFeed, so it is up to FF's polling mechanism. But I suppose FF and Twitter could have worked something out where FF should get the updates in real-time. - Daniel Sims
Bret wrote (on Thu) “The XMPP feed we get from Twitter is about 30 minutes behind. Sorry about the lag for Twitter messages this past week. We are working with Twitter to fix this technical issue.”" http://friendfeed.com/e... - Ken Sheppardson
Hope it's fixed soon. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo

Sometimes forced Refreshes seems to fix the problem. - Nicholas James
That's odd... If FF is getting Tweets via an XMPP feed from Twitter, I can't see how refresh would do anything. - Ken Sheppardson
forced Refreshes do work in case of shared items via Google reader...which otherwise take few minutes to appear on FF stream. - Roshan Ramachandran

sucks that it happens, but good to hear that its not just me... how could we even expect Twitter to be fast... - Peter Efland

I tend to force a refresh a lot - not just for twitter, either. Flickr photos haven't been showing up at all w/o the refresh. - Sarah Perez
True, very annoying. Facebook is just as bad...their stream shows things I did days later. - Neal Jansons
To me it looks like there's a disconnect of the Twitter "Firehose" that used to work between FF and Twitter. FF seems to be using Twitter's feeds now (maybe as a fall back) but twtitter feeds frankly suck. Slow, frequently broken, etc... - mikepk
I also force Refresh often, both the tweets and blog posts on FF. - Bora Zivkovic
This never bothered me. I almost never have a message that can't be sent out over a 30 minute period. When would that 30 minutes be so important? I'm curious. - MarkCarras
Mark: when you are trying to have a conversation about something 30 minutes isn't acceptable. News, for instance. Or just plain comparing notes. What Twitter is doing is ensuring I'll send more notes from friendfeed because I know then both of my groups of friends will see whatever I'm doing at same time. - Robert Scoble
there's actually a reason why Twitter's feeds are slow, but it's not described here - Steve Gillmor
Robert: Twitter has never been about conversation though. It just doesn't seem like it was made for that to me. On the rare occasion I do converse through Twitter, I do it directly to avoid the lag. You are right about Friend Feed being better for conversation, but I think it was made with that more in mind. - MarkCarras

Have to assume it has something to do with the "business model" they have but are not talking about... how long until search results/API are slowed by 30 minutes without $$$ - Brian Roy
that would be great if they made reliable access available for $$. - Steve Gillmor
I'm of two minds. 1) It stifles the dev community 2) I'd pay (reasonably) for preferred access - if they are taking away what is there today unless we $$ that would just seem like extortion. - Brian Roy
neither of those explain why the feed is asynchronous. 1. so far has not stifled community. 2. It's not here today. - Steve Gillmor
By here today I meant inducing an artificial 30 minute delay in the (in particular) search API. I get tweets today within 15 - 30 seconds 90% of the time. I would, however, pay for a premium service with SLA for timely delivery. - Brian Roy
I doubt a delay is being "induced." We "pay" for every message we get. - Steve Gillmor
Ah... ok. As cryptic as that may seem I think I know exactly what you mean. - Brian Roy
I am not being cryptic. I am being factual. - Steve Gillmor
Yeah I know... that is what I meant. It seemed cryptic but wasn't. Thanks Steve. - Brian Roy

Alaska's own newspaper endorses Obama. Hah! http://www.adn.com/opinion...
Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency -- but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation. - Robert Scoble
lol, I cant wait to hear what olbermann has to say about this - Kyle Weller
interesting showing some polls are now within the margin of error, including the zogby poll which is now within 6 - Jonathan Jesse
Jonathan: if you talk to pollsters, though, they say the actual results aren't that close. The polls that are closer aren't using cell phone only voters, like me, which tend to break younger and more educated and which are breaking for Obama big time. - Robert Scoble
A great read. Amazing how much interest there was in Europe while i was there about our election. Everyone I talked to over the past two weeks was scared of McCain/Palin and rooting for Obama/Biden. Fascinating to see how citizens of other countries took such an interest in a foreign election. US citizens are so far removed from such affairs abroad. It was good to see the interest and concern. - Jim Goldstein
No one calls me which is good anyway. If they did, I might not tell them what I really felt, as pollsters and telemarketeers calling get me pissed anyway. - Ian May
I was in Europe in April/May for a month and everyone was interested. Many doubted that Americans would ever elect a Black President. I told them to "just watch us - it will happen this time!" - Bora Zivkovic

Not surprising at all - since the choice is between a candidate and a caricature. - Bora Zivkovic
Actually the choice is a marketing campaign, which 0bama has been good at, but still has no substance. - Spencer
So, you've gone and read the articles on his website with the specifics and still believe that? It's okay to say no substance if you've read and feel that way, but if not, it's pretty silly. - Karoli
Anybody can write marketing materials, look at 0bama's past, look at his voting record, that is more telling than what some marketing strategist posted on a website. - Spencer
Voting record, and record of bills introduced and/or passed, which for a senator with 2 years, is quite impressive. If nothing else, the guy is a workaholic. I'd say the conduct of his campaign also speaks to management/governing style. - Karoli
4 years. I was living in Chicago in 2004 when Obama rose through a crowded Dem primary field to absolutely dominate the election. Even before Ryan's scandal, he was up by 35 points. People miss the morality aspect of taking someones hard earned money. If you punish success, there will be less of it. - Robert Hafer
@Robert Understood. At a gut level, I thought that's what this was about until I read the book, "Don't Think of an Elephant" which explains the liberal/progressive thought pattern on this: The objective is not to punish the successful for being successful. The objective is to ensure that those who are benefiting more from the US's public infrastructure are paying commensurately larger amounts to support it. The infrastructure makes possible private success. - Chris Lasher
Joe the plumber is worried about that portion of his potential future income that may go above $250,000 changing from a 36% bracket to a 39% bracket. Warren Buffett even understands. - LogEx

Palin Charged Taxpayers $13k to Attend Her Church - http://strategy08.wordpress.com/2008...
I really hope all the religious wackos get kicked out of the Republican party. Amazing. - Robert Scoble
You know that will never happen. At least Blair here kept his religious conversion to after he left office! - Rachel Clarke
Rachel: I wouldn't be so sure. At some point they will see the errors of their ways. Focusing on abortion while the economy burns like Palin did today in front of her audiences? Please do be serious. - Robert Scoble
My Guess is that the Palin Party will separate from the Repubs when/if this campaign hugely goes down in flames. - CW™
Bored: that would be awesome because the religious wackos would never win without another group like the fiscal conservatives (who should never have joined up with them in the first place, it turns out. Bush proved that). - Robert Scoble
Um... it would be interesting to know if taxpayers pick up airplane fees and per diem fees etc. for other politicians to speak at other events, maybe not religious events? Ex. Jimmy Carter, Democrat + Baptist? or the Clintons? or the Bushes? college commencement addresses? charities? red cross? etc? - Justin Long
@Justin - all modern presidential campaigns do this. This is the anti-theist movement on FF using any excuse to beat up Christianity. That Palin is involved is a bonus. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Mark: you're sort of right. I'm not beating up all of Christianity, though. Not all Christians believe what Palin does. Not all Christians use their religion as a litmus test for who they'll vote for. Not all Christians believe it's more important today to talk about abortion than the economy. Not all Christians believe McCain would make a better President than Obama. So, clearly, I'm not beating up Christianity here. I'm beating up religious wackos who control the Republican Party. - Robert Scoble
+1 Robert - Jeff P. Henderson
See the update at bottom. This isn't a religion issue so much as a travel expenses issue, since she charged taxpayers more to travel to her own home. - Bruce Lewis
Maybe you didn't read the article, Mark, this is something Palin did as Governor. When a _Presidential_ candidate like Obama spends money to speak somewhere, he's spending campaign money, that is, from supporters. However, what this article, and her other statements and positions, do is further delineate that she doesn't think much of the establishment clause of The First Amendment. Nor do many in her wing of the party. Which means, in my mind, she's a fundamentalist, not a conservative. - Rick Powell
I think many of those people might be happier in some Christian version of Islamist theocracies, complete with rabble-rousing, kill the heretic rallies such as we've been seeing from their campaign. That seems to be their goal. Which is why, if for nothing else, they must be defeated. - Rick Powell
What I meant was, it would be interesting to know if people in office (not in election campaigns) spend public money to speak at events - religious or otherwise - e.g. some of those I listed. I do believe it's okay to use your religion as a litmus test; i think a voter can use any qualification he or she desires. On the other hand, I think that someone in office should NOT use religion as a litmus test for their decisions, generally speaking. - Justin Long
And I for one do think the economy is more important than abortion simply because the economy is more likely to see some progress. We have had plenty of Republicans in office who have done nothing about abortion, largely because it's politically impossible at the moment. Although generally I wouldn't vote for a pro-choice candidate. What a difficult line to walk, between what is *possible* and what one *feels is important*. Sometimes we just get angry. I think a lot of Americans on both sides are angry... - Justin Long
Christians should try and remember the passage "Be angry and sin not" - or "he who says to 'You fool' is in danger of hell fire" - etc. I'm off my soap box now. - Justin Long
Yawn. Do 0bama supporters have anything else to do besides be obsessed with Palin? - Spencer
and recession - adolfo foronda
+1 to Edmundo for using the phrase "Where's the outrage" - MikeAmundsen
Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins just tried to claim that disagreements with Sarah Palin's brand of religious extremism are attacks on Christianity, religion and theism as a whole. See what I mean about the generally low level of intelligence among Sarah Palin supporters? Barack Obama himself is a Christian, religionist and theist, as are most Sarah Palin opponents. What causes this kind of mental meltdown? - Sean McBride
We non-believers shouldn't forget Obama supports faith-based initiatives being supported with tax dollars. - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Either religious extremists will be expelled and expunged from the Republican Party, and perhaps it will recover its health, or the extremists will be permitted to take over the party entirely and drive it into irrelevance and extinction. My personal assessment is that the Republican Party is beyond saving at this point -- neoconservatives and religious fundamentalists have damaged it beyond repair. - Sean McBride
speaking of "anti-theist movement", I just watched Religulous last night. it just floors me to see elected officials be so anti-intellectual and too much faith based. and I thought that leaders in developing nations are lightyears behind when it comes to psychosocial development. - ~C4Chaos
Is this actually against illegal or is it just being stated that way? - Jeff Layton
+1 to Jack Carlson. Obama is *very* religious and we could see several initiatives that bring attempt to bring churches into gov't activities. - MikeAmundsen
Welcome to FriendFeed Edmundo, that was an interesting first comment. What you failed to point out was that the $100,000 in "federal pork" that went to "Rev. Pfleger's church in Chicago" actually went to the COMMUNITY YOUTH CENTER *attached* to the church. You know, the place where kids can play basketball after school, get homework help, learn karate or golf, get help finding a summer job, prepare for college, or use the computer lab if they don't have a computer at home. - Karim
But God forbid poor black kids should learn how to play golf, eh? Because then where would you be? lol EDIT: they also have some kind of nutritional snack program. So it's possible some of that $100,000 is literally "federal pork." - Karim
Jeff, good question. If you drill down to the Yahoo! News article (http://news.yahoo.com/s...) it says "Experts say those trips fall into an ethically gray area, since Democrats and Republicans alike often visit religious venues for personal and official reasons." - Karim
Also from the article: "'Politicians are entitled to freely exercise their religion while in office, but ethically if not legally that part of her trip ought to not be charged to taxpayers,' said Walker, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty. 'It's still fundamentally a religious and spiritual experience she is having.'" So again, gray area. Between this and Troopergate, it looks like Palin is good at worming into ethical gray areas. - Karim
this is really about ethics, not legality. in gov't, corporate, and volunteer orgs, it is *always* best to steer clear of anything that might look like your'e taking advantage of taxpayers, shareholders, and donors. any chance you get to charge the group for a trip, a meal, a conference is a chance to express your ethical standards to everyone associated w/ the org. and you can bet that folks w/ in the orgs take their cues from leadership. and they judge you accordingly. - MikeAmundsen

it could be a "may" if it were written a few years ago... otherwise.... - Jeremy Toeman
It's not such a terrible thing. It's a world economy. What we had going here couldn't last forever. Now we just have to stop doing things that disadvantage us, and we'll do okay. We need to get to work on our education system, health care, infrastructure, and stop borrowing all that money for things that don't create value -- like the war in Iraq. - Dave Winer
You know if McCain started talking like that he might win the election. The thing that's scary is that he doesn't seem to understand where we fit in. Our army isn't going to convince a lot of our adversaries and all of his bluster is going in the wrong direction. - Dave Winer
And still, people are overlooking South America. China and Russia are slowly building alliances with other countries, bypassing the United States... - Mona Nomura
BTW, I think it's very cool that the Chinese are opening plants in the US. I'd like to dig into that and find out why it was economic for them to do that. Maybe they just did it for PR purposes. It's hard to imagine that our labor costs less than theirs. - Dave Winer
For those who follow the recent goings-on in the Anglican Communion, it's intersting to note that much of the debate is North-South centered, with some concluding that the North is moving toward a phase of Laodicean irrelevance. - Ontario Emperor

There is obviously a lot for the US to be concerned about and I don't think it's necessary for the US to be the sole superpower. It's probably better for us if we're not bc obviously we aren't very good at it. That said, I have some real concerns about what we're seeing from China and what's really going on. TV is dead. Time delays are dead. In Canada, they don't allow local broadcasting of election results until your region's polls have closed. The Internet has killed that old-fashioned idea. Time delay TV is so 1988. - Stephen Pierzchala
Aaah, gotcha - Archangel ωαřмaiden
We hear this every four years, but if you truly want the Olympcs to be live with the 12-hourdifference, be waring to go at 3 a.m. That said, I notice that at least for the East Coasters are getting some of the big events live while us West Coasters have to wait three hours... But we're used to that... - Chris Reed
CBC is the perfect model. Live, inclusive, no smaltzy profiles, just the sports. - Kathleen Mazzocco

Robert - Yes East Coast, but they are back to recorded gymnastics. "LIVE" is gone. - Ben Newton
I'm watching it live right now. Is it a west coast thing? There are tons of live events online this year, even practice sessions. Requires MSoft Silverlight but pretty good quality streams. - Andrew Leyden
I watched the opening ceremony on my TV via Sopcast&Tvants (pc hooked up to TV). Watched it again in HDTV on NBC later that night. This link has all the ways to catch coverage http://howto.wired.com/wiki... - Andrew Leyden
and you are surprised? at all? honestly? - Thomas Vincent
I'm watching CBC in Canada. http://www.cbc.ca/olympics Do you think it would be any different if another network was covering the Olympics in the States? - Phillip Jeffrey
Comcast added two special Olympic channels in the HD section--one for basketball and one for soccer. There is also Universal HD which has some coverage, USA Network, Oxygen, CNBC and MSNBC, and Telemundo. I'd spin around to see if you can find anything live at the moment (I think there is a basketball game on now). - Andrew Leyden
Have you tried nbcolympics.com? I know they are having some events live. Personally I don't have a problem with the delay. With a choice of the races being broadcast live but not seeing them and being able to see the delay I'll take the delay. - ChiliMac
Here is a good list of what is on (all times EDT) across all the networks http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv... - Andrew Leyden
If you want live, unfortunetly the only way is through the web. And they are raw feeds using MS Silverlight. So if your willing to deal with that you can get all of the events in a pop-up window on your computer. : | - Bluesun 2600 from twhirl
On the West coast in .au we are use to 2hr delay for most sporting events, but not the Olympics. Appears to be live at, least on SBS the "complementary" broadcaster, time to settle down for 3 hours of the womens cycling road race. - Nick Cowie
whenever the olympics take place on the other side of the world most events aren't shown live. This is not about broadcasting the olympics as a public service. It's about NBC making their money back. You do understand the relationship between ad rates and prime-time, right? The Internet takes away any suspense about the olympics when they are held on the other side of the world. You ain't gonna get live from NBC. Too much money at risk. - Dave Madison
part of the coverage is live at least on the east coast. there has been some effort to schedule a few important US events in the morning a la Phelps so that they can be seen live on primetime - Ted
Adding insult to injury, my rather capable PowerPC Mac can't even access the Olympics on nbcolympics.com. It's using an Intel-only version of Silverlight. Trying CBC and other foreign networks online all reject me because of my American IP, and I haven't found a successful proxy server that'll let me stream. - Kevin Hessel

The congressmen are Twittering a filibuster and asking for your involvement. Very interesting. @petehoekstra and @johnculberson
Anyone know what bill the filbuster is for? - Roberto Bonini
Turns out @petehoekstra isn't following anyone. Usually a bad sign, but I followed him anyway. - Ontario Emperor
Roberto: it's not a filibuster. Congress adjourned for the summer recess. They wanted to vote on the bill lifting the ban on offshore drilling before the recess, a bill that has no urgency. - Mark Trapp
Mark: It has urgency now. :-) - Brent Newhall
Pelosi shut down the CSPAN cameras, turned off the lights and microphones. I think they should vote to decide if there should be drilling. - Caleb Easterwood
It couldn't be a filibuster it's the House members doing this and filibuster is a Senate procedure. There is no filibuster in the House rules. - Thomas Vincent
@Thomas: Good point. Just remembered that myself. - Roberto Bonini
Caleb: no, she didn't. She adjourned the house for the summer recess. When the Congress adjourns, CSPAN turns off and everyone goes home. It's not censorship, it's the Congress going home to their constituents. What's the rush to vote on drilling? It won't have any effect on the summer's gas prices. The twittering/qiking congressmen are playing the social media crowd hard. - Mark Trapp
رونوشت به حسین مزیدی - Shandiz
+1 to Mark. Exactly. - Kevin Bondelli
The outcome of the vote won't have any effect on gas prices for at least ten years. This is pure grandstanding. - Nathan Rein
... not, of course, to imply that there's anything wrong with grandstanding, a glorious tradition in parliamentary politics the world over. - Nathan Rein
@nathan It should have an immediate effect because the prices are at least in part a function of speculation. In the very short term, prices may go down with the promise of more oil in the future. (My own speculation: I doubt that price drop will bridge all the way from now to when the oil actually enters the marketplace. Without the oil actually in the pipes, the prices should creep back up after the initial drop.) - Kirk Kittell
Kirk, no, they won't. Futures speculation is based on the delivery of futures contracts, which must occur within a quarter (more often, within 30 days). Speculation is based on what will happen to the price of oil (more specifically, the production/supply of oil) at the time of delivery. This will do absolutely nothing to speculation or "psychology" until the oil can be delivered to market, which will not happen for several years. - Mark Trapp
A Twitibuster? Err drilibuster? Maybe more accurately, a re-electibuster. - Christian Anderson from fftogo
Mark, very lucid. - Pete Delucchi
Was not a filibuster. Only in the Senate can that happen. House had recessed, so it was more of a sit-in. Still very interesting though. Almost went down to the gallery to check it out. Presser at http://qik.com/johnculberson is cool - Andrew Feinberg
@Mark: So you don't think the prices will come down at all if the offshore ban is removed? - Kirk Kittell
I think it's totally an illusion that gas prices will come down if offshore drilling is allowed. It's a Republican smokescreen. - Cathryn Hrudicka
It'll have no effect on it until the oil comes to market. That's what so silly about this drilling push. Environmental concerns aside, it's a long term solution to a problem that requires an immediate answer. The gas tax holiday, for all its argumentative defects, is more based in reality to solve gas prices now than drilling. You want to bring gas prices down now? Mandate the prices or ban speculation entirely. - Mark Trapp
@Cathryn: See, that response is the reason I have a problem not believing that there is a chance they may be right. I'm a minority: a biker/walker in Houston. I don't want the ban to be lifted. But when it gets pronounced as a Republican scheme only, I try to separate the Kool Aid response from the possibilities. I think the truth is fuzzier than that. I think Mark's explanation is smart, but might only deal with the trades reported to the exchange and that the whole picture might be a little different. - Kirk Kittell
That is: Mark, I think you're right, but I also think that a sufficiently motivated cast of Congressfolk and billionaires can achieve anything that they set their minds to. I can question their intelligence, sure, but I can't question their political and business savvy. - Kirk Kittell
Yeah, business savvy is right. It's all about some extra profit for a few oil companies. At it's max predicted production (which would take 7 years to reach) it would add about 1 million barrels per day... That sounds like a lot, until you realize that's a 1.2% increase in the global supply, and, since oil is a market-traded commodity, there would only be a commensurate reduction in oil prices. Whee... $0.25 less per gallon... in 7 years.... - Jason Carreira
Mark, you now they used this "years" arguement 10 years ago, 20 years ago & even as far back as 30 years ago, meanwhile, we have went from importing 20% of our oil 30 years ago to importing 70% today! The same thing can be said of alternative sources (which no one on my side is trying to block, Bush has subsidized these sources more than any previous Admin), so using your logic we should give up on alternative sources as well! - Brian
Brian, there's solving the energy crisis, and stabbing blindly in the dark because it "sounds" good. Drilling will have no measurable effect on the economy now, and outlooks show that even at peak production, the effect on the oil market will be negligible. So why did it need to be passed before the recess? Why was it so important to have a special session after Congress adjourned? It's political silliness, and they got people to bite via Twitter and Qik. - Mark Trapp
hi , nice to know u ,my name is cici - cici
@Mark: It will have an effect on the economy here in Houston... now, where is that Culberson guy from... ;-) - Kirk Kittell

Steven!!! Funny, I just did a Qik video about comment duplication and Kevin Fox stuff and it hits on this big time. FriendFeed needs a new UI. I keep trying to spread it and I keep getting pushback I never got with Twitter. The people who run FriendFeed aren't delivering noise-reducing tools, either, and insist that the noise is good (duplication from one micro-node of friends to another). I don't think they've done research with real users. - Robert Scoble
FF should steal some ideas from Digg on commenting. It should also steal some of Digg's recommendation features. I think an interesting addition would be to have most popular threads and discussions for the global FF network, among other types of recommendations. - Charles Ju
Fragmentation and duplication are serious ills of FF - oh how I wish we could tag a conversation so we could have unified conversations around a topic; but just think how LONG the comment thread would be...wow. Rich convo but too long?! - Susan Beebe
Robert, you "don't think" Kevin's done user research, or you asked him and he told you he didn't? Kevin, what do you say? - Jason Wehmhoener
I agree with Robert, Friendfeed needs a new UI if it wants to go mainstream. Maybe some sort of homepage like the new facebook profile. More noise-reductions tool would be good too. - Alejandro
Well, considering most people I talk to still wont use a feed reader, you may be right. I think part of the mainstream problem is that there are so many different services out there and friendfeed can potentially pull all of it together for them. For me, I want to be able to read blog posts, shared google reader items, digg articles, etc right here, I mean heck - there's an awful lot of screen real estate there to the right-hand side....let's have some AJAX-y fetching going on of the actual content. - Rob Neville
I think you're incorrect, Robert: mainstream people are not as interconnected as people are in early adopter communities. I think Kevin's got a point: let's say you remove the early adopter audience. Do you think one person's friends really cares what you, or me, or potentially 50 to 100 strangers think about something? They care about what they're friends are doing. Just look to real... more... - Mark Trapp
To my point, I really don't care that 500 other strangers shared a story, or that there were 80 comments with people I don't know talking about it. I care about the people I'm following. I want to have a discussion with people I care about, not strangers. I think the reshare and fragmentation facilitates that. If say, James Ferguson shared a story, I'm interested in that, because it... more... - Mark Trapp
well then we need a feature that locks out superconnectors who have, say, more than 50 friends. Or at least locks them out for, say, a day so that a micronode conversation can happen first. - Robert Scoble
I was watching Michael Arington's Stanford Startup School presentation and I think a good point he made was that after your site gets to critical mass, the comments start to become trolly and the community loses its close connection. I can foresee this being a huge problem for FF as it grows. - Charles Ju
Robert, maybe even if there was a way for the content producer to say "Do not allow friend of friend on this post." So, it becomes sorta like an on-demand private feed. You can still see it, but your like and your comment doesn't expose it to 15,000 other people. And of course, there'd be some visual indicator: could even use the lock icon like it does for full private feeds. - Mark Trapp
Mark: point taken...I suppose what I was getting at, although not articulating quite well now that I read it again is that I think the key for taking FF beyond us abnormal folks is to make it a one-stop-shop to remove the confusion of so many social interactivity services and feed readers, etc. I think FF has the capacity to do that with some tweaks. - Rob Neville
I agree with you Robert Neville; I apologize, my response was directed towards Robert Scoble. There's a few assumptions that I think we take for granted that's lost on most people: 1) privacy is an illusion, 2) we're all interconnected, 3) we spend an acceptably large amount of time online. No matter how true those sound to us, for most people, there's a lot of pushback. Which is why,... more... - Mark Trapp
I think Kevin (and FF as a whole) is correct in realizing the value of fragmented conversations. The issue here is that super-connectors with 20K subscribers are bound to expose those fragmented conversations (that otherwise would go unnoticed by the masses, as intended) quite often - all they need to do is 'Like' whatever random item that shows up in their feed. Not only that -... more... - Aviv
Best two lines in this conversation: "We're abnormal" [Mark Trapp] & "we need a feature that locks out superconnectors" [Robert Scoble]. The rest is just noise. :P - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
a more compelling UI would truly elevate FF...but then, that could be said about many Web apps - .LAG liked that

some of my favorite services are niche! - Ross M Karchner
I actually like the FF interface in its current form. It's lightning fast ( damn facebook is getting irritatingly slower these days ) and its UI is simple much more Googlesque. It's quite unique that its social graph is not bi-directional (like many other social networks), and it gives me tons of useful links and is gradually becoming where i come for personalized information discovery.... more... - Krishna Gade
Friendfeed will go mainstream when the applications that fuel it go mainstream (which might be a while). Whoever mentioned that people don't even get feed readers was right. Even among tech-savvy types (non-web), concepts like RSS and Social Bookmarking are still completely foreign. - Steve Spalding
*sigh* niche tools are so important both digitally and in meatspace - why does everything need to become mainstream to be viewed as a success - the majority of businesses and products in the world would be considered niche and in aggregate far out weight the aggregate of what would be considered mainstream - no disrespect to you steve for writing this post but anytime i see "this will never be mainstream" sentiments i can't help but think that its a myopic view - mike "glemak" dunn
FF depends on a whole lot of users using open services like Twitter Flickr etc. I know no one outside of tech who uses them. Most people are locked into the privacy world view and wouldn't dream of openly sharing their stuff. FF is SV/tech niche only. Sadly......... - Sean Kelly

Jigar, Ugh... IE is such a pain in the ass. we're hoping to get IE7 support, but really, we're targeting power twitter users, and they don't use anything but Firefox & Safari. Right now we're at 4% of our traffic is IE users so not sure it is vital to get working during a beta launch. - Derek Gathright
Sounds interesting. Would love an invite. Thanx! - Barbara K. Baker
Alright derek, any idea where to get invite from?] - Jigar Mehta

Agree with James. Why? - Duncan Riley
wheres the innovation ? I Agree with James, do I need another gmail type interface ? to me its just a skin being applied to Twitter, you can do all the makeup you want, but that will not hide the twitter illness beneath a skin !! - Peter Dawson
@Duncan, convenience. But you know what, it's not a second Gmail, it's just some colors an elements that resemble to Gmail, and make it easy to understand and work with the applications. Duncan, this application rocks big time, wait till you try it yourself :-) - Orli Yakuel
Orli, " this application rocks" - this is just a UI app , as much as I hate sayin this, but building an interface on a "rocky" /unstable application will certainly lead to what ? another mini fail whale experience ? - Peter Dawson
Peter, you're talking like Twitter is to be close tomorrow... come on... we all know that this "UNSTABLE" thing, didn't stop none of us from using it. And I'd like to think that Twitter will be stable eventually. - Orli Yakuel
Tweenky.com seems to bring up only a white page... So is this a full Twitter-like platform, or just a UI that talks to Twitter itself? - Jason Carreira
I can't reach at the site.is tweenky under construction?? - Chris Qie
Yes. (even for me, and I miss it already since yesterday) - Orli Yakuel
