What we know about radically new design of friendfeed (leave more details here):

1. It will turn on at http://beta.friendfeed.com at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Monday morning (tomorrow).

2. They discussed this new version with a bunch of bloggers and journalists on Thursday. At least two people recorded that entire session (Techcrunch and me). My video will be up on Monday. I'm also trying to edit up a "highlights" video that also will be up on Monday morning.

3. The old version will not change. To see the new UI you'll need to visit http://beta.friendfeed.com -- it will stay that way for at least a couple of weeks as "kinks" in the new UI are worked out, Bret Taylor told us on Thursday.

Yuval: no, I didn't do that for any color scheme reasons. It's just that my icon will look good and stand out on the new friendfeed. Your personal icon is much more significant on the new version so many of you will want to have new icons ready to go. The icon was shot by @thomashawk in friendfeed's offices, though. They had some Hulk gloves lying around and Thomas asked me to put those on and shot a bunch of pictures that I like a lot.

8. My video was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II at 1080p resolution with a 24mm F2.8 lens and steadied by a monopod. Techcrunch's video was handheld and shot on a Flip Mino HD camcorder. I'll let you decide which one to watch. :-)

Robert and Wayne: There seems to be this notion that Facebook pioneered its current look and feel but it seems very much like the current FriendFeed look and feel when it comes to how the stream is represented. I can see Facebook copying FriendFeed in future iterations but FriendFeed seems to have been first to the mark in this department.

Paul: ff2go is ok, but every once in a while I'll have to logon to the main site to get the API key. In that sense, its mostly annoying. On the iPhone interface, that never happens - once logged in, the cookie stays around leaving you logged in. But the service itself? I like it. Go ff2go, because it enables me to FriendFeed when I'm on my phone

Hmm, the official FriendFeed iPhone/mobile version seems to work fairly well for me in Opera Mobile under S60, for what it's worth. I don't think anyone's built a dedicated client, though.

@Robert, RTL is about language direction(right to left support) and could easily integrated to friendfeed by just adding "change direction" flag where text inserted(esp. in comments). the problem is we could not mix English and Persian words in our comments.

Facebook making Friendfeed irrelevant? Not for me. FB and FF could have identical interfaces and FF would keep me and my main social graph, not Facebook. Why? The community here is amazing. I've met some irl, not met others, and all are friends. On FB, entirely different, and a little weird to have my mother, ex-husband, former co-workers and kids all on the same graph. It's inhibitive, and it doesn't make for community participation.

As far as I know it's a complete UI overhaul, so the question for me is whether FriendFeed wants to be more like Twitter: simple as hell (and destined to less tech savvy people)

It will be on the beta site then, not the real site. I will see if there are other details we can reveal they will come over next hour.

Brian, there's a difference between public interest and wanting to know what a private company is doing. Financial institutions are publicly-owned and traded companies, and are regulated by the Government because there is a real public interest in what they do. Knowing what FriendFeed, a privately-owned company, is doing 3 days before they announce it is hardly a justifiable public interest.

the concept of a Beta version hosted on an other website is really interesting, with such process , users will have to compare and the show their preference, change aren't imposed, and tracking is made easy. FaceBook may learn something in such process.

We're all speculating and won't know for sure until Steve Jobs either steps down or retires. Either which way, this is really bad on Apple's part because they are (to me) encouraging rumors and speculation, irresponsible journalism, and publishing. The question is: Are we ok with that?

Now that Jobs has made his January 5 announcement, we can all reflect. In my view, even if they didn't know anything, Apple & Jobs should have made some sort of statement in December, when the Macworld announcement was made. It wouldn't have been perfect, especially since they may not have known about the hormonal imbalance at the time, but better to say something than nothing. If nothing else, it would have kept Robert out of the yogurt shop. :)

Phil: Ford still finds itself in a hole which the whole of the US auto industry partly has dug themselves, even if Ford didn´t accept the bailout money. Nevertheless, the move described in the post is good and necessary, although a bit late. Of course I am biased, but I remember a time when US cars were considered superior cars in Europe, but that´s a while ago now. Hope to see a better Henry Ford legacy in the future.

As to longevity, I don't know - i dislike all the fluff in FB, apps and games, but I can see it growing into a living family tree - our parents are joining, our children are joining, and I now have a whole multi generational network including my parents' friends, my friends' parents - you get this whole "village" of real connections if you use it that way, quite warming when like you have moved countries a bit, and the value could grow. A grounding space in a increasingly disconnected and virtual world.

If Facebook needs to start charging than they've failed at their mission and are leaving way too much money on the table. The power in facebook comes in the fact that they now know what we like, what we hate, who we follow, who we listen to. That is worth so much more to people than the pittance they'd be able to make by charging us a fee at a price we wouldn't run screaming to the hills over. It really irks me that they are raising the price on the text plans. For example, the same 1500 SMS that I currently pay $10 will costs me $15 with the new iPhone. I'm thinking of just sticking with my 16 GB first gen iPhone Wi-Fi.

LOL MG, but I'm not sure they turn into heavenly iPhones unless you jailbreak them. Right now, you can't sync an iphone that hasn't been activated on AT&T and use it as a regular iPod w/o hacking it.

*Something* will be available right away (or within 2 weeks), either the 3G-iPhone2, or a cheaper entry-level/subsidized iPhone. Apple has been without stock for too long, they're not stupid, and they want to max out their Q3 shipments. But there's going to be quite a backlog of demand, so quantities will be tight at least for a few weeks.

Who cares - as long as the phone is tied exclusively to a service(AT&T in the U.S.), its going nowhere fast. It's kind of like a repeat of the Apple-exclusive hardware for Mac OS. That worked really well for market share and innovation...

I think many of us are unhappy with our current provider. I know I an unhappy with Sprint and look forward to the day the contract is over. We have 5 lines counting the data card. I am looking forward to an iPhone.

@Robert Scoble My family is all in California except me and they are on Sprint. Very nice family plan, and the service has been fine. I think you met my sister Marni at Under the Radar. She's got data on sprint and it works well. Oh, and just because AT&T is "the best" doesn't mean its ridiculous that you should be locked into a service provider. What happened to choice?!?

You have choice, Zachary -- you can buy a Windows Mobile phone. :-) If Apple wanted to build a platform independent phone it wouldn't have gotten to develop the OS for the phone *it* wanted to build. The telcos were not too interested @ the time in a phone that nearly had a 1GB OS. I hope it is open to all carriers someday, but I'm glad it got built how Apple wanted it built.

Almost certain that they won't be available until around the 18th at the earliest. Jobs will use the interim to build anticipation and for the free marketing. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but I also suspect that we'll only get demos of apps and have to wait until the end of June for the 2.0 firmware update.

@Zachary and you get the opportunity to not make that compromise. On the other hand, had Apple compromised, nothing remotely approaching what got built would've gotten built. That said, I do not love the "control" they are lording over us (no support of Flash, etc). It's not a perfect world, but I am very happy with the phone.

Since An year ago when I made the switch, I have myself converted atleast three friends to Mac devotees. But it is only after I have tried to convince 30. People choose Ubiquity over Experience. TCO over Hidden Costs.

@ Jon Erickson - Just out of curiosity, how did the Dell that you saved "$1600" on match up feature wise against the MBP. I know from just playing on dell.com that when you configure a Dell that is comprable to a MBP that they are normally very close in price with the Dell sometimes being more expensive. As for market share, BMW and Mercedes engineer some of the finest automobiles on the road and they will always fulfill a niche. Likewise for the Mac...and that is ok.

@James I tried to get the configs as close as possible, 4g ram, dual processor 2.5, 320g hd, 17 inch monitor, everything similar. Dell had $400 off promo but total before tax and ship $1600 the MBP was $3200. I wanted the MBP, but want could I do?

I've used it on iPhone and it works pretty well. I also have used it on Nokia N95 and N82 phones and it works OK there (I hate the web browser on those phones when compared to iPhone). I heard it doesn't work on Windows Mobile smart phones but haven't tested that yet.

friendfeed renders ok with winmo6/ie on the blackjack, but you can't expand comment threads AND you can not take an action: comment/like, etc. it is read only. moreover, the experience on the referenced site can suck pretty bad

The iPhone uses WebKit, which is the core of Safari on the desktop, and is therefore AJAX capable. Most mobile browsers do not share this capability. AJAX should be a bonus, not a requirement, for using a website, particularly one whose functionality is as simple as FF's. http://hesketh.com/publica...

With a lot of sites lately, and with Google, it feels like if you don't have an iPhone you don't matter any more. Heck I would probably get one but I have a work phone I'm stuck with, and don't want to carry two phones. Even if I did have one I still don't think it's right to focus so much on only one brand/device.

I agree there should be a m.friendfeed.com. But with MojiPage (http://sb.mojipage.com/u/wil1/) you can get about 3/4 of FF on your phone... mobile rendering, Like and Comment links. But still no Share Something or threaded conversations... unles I just can't figure it out. Why did FF not think to have m.FF?

Does FF work in browsers that don't support AJAX? Progressive enhancement is a frontend engineering best practice that makes it possible for any website to work in a mobile browser without a separate subdomain. AJAX should be a "bonus" for browsers that support it, not a requirement for the site's basic functionality.
