2. They discussed this new version with a bunch of bloggers and journalists on Thursday. At least two people recorded that entire session (Techcrunch and me). My video will be up on Monday. I'm also trying to edit up a "highlights" video that also will be up on Monday morning.
- Robert Scoble
3. The old version will not change. To see the new UI you'll need to visit http://beta.friendfeed.com -- it will stay that way for at least a couple of weeks as "kinks" in the new UI are worked out, Bret Taylor told us on Thursday.
- Robert Scoble
4. We are not allowed to share many details or screen shots until 9 a.m. Monday morning Pacific Time.
- Robert Scoble
5. I will reserve judgment on the new design until Monday morning but it is quite different and has lots of new features. It'll be interesting to see who likes it and who hates it.
- Robert Scoble
Hopefully they'll mention some of the features that set it apart from FaceBook. FB has really encroached on FF feature territory lately. I have found discussions I used to have on FF have moved largely to FB.
- Eric Hamilton
Eric: how it is different with Twitter and Facebook will be very clear, both just by playing with it and by watching the videos. It introduces some very different ideas than either Facebook or Twitter have introduced.
- Robert Scoble
I really think the story here is whether the Facebook redesign makes Friendfeed irrelevant - because I think it does. I'm much more interested in what my real friends post than any imaginary clique online -- and I think most other people will be too. Just my .02
- Wayne Schulz
6. My new icon was made specifically to look great in the new design.
- Robert Scoble
What time will that be for us in the UK? Im useless at working this out.
- Simon Wicks
7. I'm excited too, but I don't have it yet and there's some parts that do concern me. Can't wait to discuss those with you on Monday. I do know I'm going to use lists a LOT more than I am currently.
- Robert Scoble
Wayne: you haven't seen the new design of friendfeed which introduces lots of new stuff that Facebook will probably copy. I do NOT agree with you, by the way. Facebook still is struggling with "publicness" and other issues that make friendfeed viable.
- Robert Scoble
So FriendFeed is going to have a green color scheme?
- Yuval Atzmon
Thanks very much guys, ill waste away the last hour of work playing around then. Its all i usually do anyway.
- Simon Wicks
Yuval: no, I didn't do that for any color scheme reasons. It's just that my icon will look good and stand out on the new friendfeed. Your personal icon is much more significant on the new version so many of you will want to have new icons ready to go. The icon was shot by @thomashawk in friendfeed's offices, though. They had some Hulk gloves lying around and Thomas asked me to put those on and shot a bunch of pictures that I like a lot.
- Robert Scoble
Looking forward to the new design, hoping there is a way to reduce redundant posts. -I see a lot of the same info as people Tweet the same info they post in their other networks.
- Jamie Ginsberg
Will there be a new mobile design? FriendFeed currently doesn't work on my Series 60 Nokia phone, unless I use ff2go. I like m.twitter.com, and wish FriendFeed had similar... Yes, I know there's an iPhone view, but I don't use that (though on my iPod Touch, it so rocks)
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
8. My video was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II at 1080p resolution with a 24mm F2.8 lens and steadied by a monopod. Techcrunch's video was handheld and shot on a Flip Mino HD camcorder. I'll let you decide which one to watch. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert, one question: you said "Lists". Is there any attention profiling features? Any personal relevancy real experience? I give you one name and tell me "ok" or "nope". Chris Saad.
- directeur
Colin: no new mobile version is coming tomorrow, although the new design works on iPhone/iPod Touch. They know they need to work on getting more clients like TweetDeck/Twhirl to support them, along with more mobile clients too.
- Robert Scoble
directeur: let's talk tomorrow when i can answer that question fully.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, ok, I see :) You've answered it!
- directeur
Colin: What is your experience of ff2go on S60? I started reading about it today and I'm going to try it (sorry for going off topic here).
- Paul Jacobson
from twhirl
Robert and Wayne: There seems to be this notion that Facebook pioneered its current look and feel but it seems very much like the current FriendFeed look and feel when it comes to how the stream is represented. I can see Facebook copying FriendFeed in future iterations but FriendFeed seems to have been first to the mark in this department.
- Paul Jacobson
from twhirl
Paul: ff2go is ok, but every once in a while I'll have to logon to the main site to get the API key. In that sense, its mostly annoying. On the iPhone interface, that never happens - once logged in, the cookie stays around leaving you logged in. But the service itself? I like it. Go ff2go, because it enables me to FriendFeed when I'm on my phone
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
Robert: Thanks! Its good to know that they're looking into a mobile version. And while twhirl supports them (kudos), lets hope Tweetdeck and more support them. My main concern is a mobile site - please do pass on that if you get a chance. Thanks
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
Hmm, the official FriendFeed iPhone/mobile version seems to work fairly well for me in Opera Mobile under S60, for what it's worth. I don't think anyone's built a dedicated client, though.
- Tyson Key
Tyson: Ah ok, will test it out in Opera Mobile. I tend to use the stock browser that comes with the phone more though
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
FFToGo itself works pretty well in the standard WebKit-based browser, though.
- Tyson Key
Robert, did you considered RTL support for this new version? you know that more than 3K ff users are using Persian language.
- farzaam
farzaam: what's RTL? In the press event friendfeed's co-founders talk about Iranian and Turkish users, by the way. They know they need to do more to let us filter by language.
- Robert Scoble
farzaam: I do not work for friendfeed, by the way. From your question it makes it sound like you think I do.
- Robert Scoble
I still don't get how to use FriendFeed as it is and now it is changing? I hope I can understand it better when it changes. Mr. Scoble obviously loves it, but I cannot figure out why and how. I consider myself computer savvy too.
- Hummie
Robert, well Twhirl supports FriendFeed but feel it needs a bit of work. Shame Alerty Thingy have stopped. I'm looking forward to testing the new beta sometime Monday evening.
- Kol Tregaskes
Hummie: let's talk tomorrow because so many things are changing. If you want to learn about the current version of friendfeed, I made a video here: http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Robert Scoble
Interested in the significance of why being part Hulk part Oompa Loompa is critical to new FF ;)
- Patrick Boegel
@Robert, RTL is about language direction(right to left support) and could easily integrated to friendfeed by just adding "change direction" flag where text inserted(esp. in comments). the problem is we could not mix English and Persian words in our comments.
- farzaam
Patrick: you'll see tomorrow. :-) farzaam: thanks, I understand now. Yeah, that's important but I don't think they've changed anything about how languages are handled. They are working on several issues there, though. I'll keep following up on language issues, though, because I'm interested in the topic.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, will the icons be bigger or is 75x75 still fine?
- Gaby K. Slezák
Gaby: I think 75x75 is still fine, but I'll know for sure later when they give us access.
- Robert Scoble
I don't even visit FriendFeed online any more thanks to BuddyFeed (in the same way Twittelator & Tweetie killed the web version of Twitter). Either way, I'll check it out.
- darnell
from BuddyFeed
thanks robert, can't wait to see the all new friendfeed tomorrow :-)
- Gaby K. Slezák
What we also know: Robert can't stop talking about it even though he doesn't have it.
- Louis Gray
the A/B split test says that color schema will be tracked, but this is not the important, it will be user centered, may be there will be some shortcut too.
- abdellah
Finally signed up for a gf accout, looking forward to seeing the new stuff. Thanks for leading the way to ff @scobleizer!
- Paul
from Nambu
Facebook making Friendfeed irrelevant? Not for me. FB and FF could have identical interfaces and FF would keep me and my main social graph, not Facebook. Why? The community here is amazing. I've met some irl, not met others, and all are friends. On FB, entirely different, and a little weird to have my mother, ex-husband, former co-workers and kids all on the same graph. It's inhibitive, and it doesn't make for community participation.
- Karoli
from BuddyFeed
As far as I know it's a complete UI overhaul, so the question for me is whether FriendFeed wants to be more like Twitter: simple as hell (and destined to less tech savvy people)
- Kris
Sounds to me like Scoble is not that impressed with the new beta? It's gonna be interesting to see what it looks like and if it's any friendlier to new users.
- Jim Connolly
@Scoble : You have been trying to create a good hype about FF before new design get out, i just hope it doesn't depress us badly!
- Junal Rahman
Junal - discussion does not have to be interpretted as hype
- Patrick Boegel
I think it is fair to say that many people will be unhappy with the new UI for whatever reason and others will love it.
- Paul Jacobson
Paul - you're right. That will happen. Change is tough.
- Hutch Carpenter
@scobleizer Thanks for the tease on the new FriendFeed UI.
- Mike Reynolds
The video will be embargoed until Monday morning but Paul Buchheit (left) and Bret Taylor just told me that they will show us a new friendfeed design but then said we can't talk about it until Monday morning. It will be on the beta site then, not the real site. I will see if there are other details we can reveal they will come over next hour.
- Robert Scoble
They're going to add profiles and pokes, right?
- Yuval Atzmon
If they do a total redesign, I will be pissed.
- TheHenry
scoble, i'm here at friendfeed hq, too, looking across the room at you. i assumed they meant "don't talk about it until monday" but maybe not i guess.
- Eric Eldon
Eric's comment has made this thread pure win. On an unrelated note, I can't figure out how I haven't run across him before...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I know this embargoing process is the way of the world but how is this much different than political reporters kowtowing to politicians in order to maintain "access"? Doesn't this process essentially sully the impartiality and integrity of tech reporters?
- Brian Sullivan
Do we have a time on Monday, cause, you know, I don't try and hit beta.friendfeed.com over and over again.... Not that I've tried already *whistles*
- Johnny Worthington
Brian, this isn't politics, it's a commercial venture. There is a difference between withholding and unveiling.
- Johnny Worthington
@Brian: No. It lets FriendFeed tell their story the same way to many people at once. It lets them get their product right before issuing it and running the risk of uncompleted updates getting reviewed.
- Louis Gray
Yes - I understand why FF and other companies want this ( the same reason in politics from what I can tell -- they want to control the message). My question still stands though: "Doesn't this process essentially sully the impartiality and integrity of tech reporters?"
- Brian Sullivan
@Brian, again, no. Agreeing to an embargo doesn't indicate bias.
- Louis Gray
Brian: private ventures are under no public obligation; their only obligation is to their investors. If other people want to know and they're willing to play by their rules, there's not much you can do. One person trying to make the "this is bullshit" argument about embargoes just means one less person who gets to know.
- Mark Trapp
Access is the mother of modern Journalism. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
Brian, I see what you are saying, but if that was the case, then the same must be applied to movie reviewers who get advanced screenings. I think if you are the type of journalist who writes good reviews on crap things just to maintain access, then you are not a journalist, you work in entertainment. It's the ones that get the access, call crap when they see it yet still get invited back that you need to listen to.
- Johnny Worthington
Please please please let there be blink and marquee tags...
- Bill Sodeman
It just gives you time to brief more than one person -- if the first person blabbed the whole story, you'd have a whole bunch of pissed off journos with nothing to write about except some other guy's coverage.
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
Mark, Louis -- isn't this the same argument used by the reporters that had access to Wall Street bankers before the current financial melt down?
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, there's a difference between public interest and wanting to know what a private company is doing. Financial institutions are publicly-owned and traded companies, and are regulated by the Government because there is a real public interest in what they do. Knowing what FriendFeed, a privately-owned company, is doing 3 days before they announce it is hardly a justifiable public interest.
- Mark Trapp
It's their UI. They can show it to whoever they wish. Looking forward to Monday.
- Chris Baskind
rrrrr, i hate teases like that. just tell me when i can see it, no time to speculate. but Milan? just too sweet for words.
- Karoli
I'm thankful for the heads up on the new design. Thanks Robert
- Russ Jackson
Mark - so essentially what you are saying if the company was a public company (Google or Microsoft for instance) obeying such an embargo could not be justified by a tech reporter?
- Brian Sullivan
the concept of a Beta version hosted on an other website is really interesting, with such process , users will have to compare and the show their preference, change aren't imposed, and tracking is made easy. FaceBook may learn something in such process.
- abdellah
Facebook did have the option to try out the new design, on the release before this latest one. In the end they just pushed it as standard to everyone though.
- Simon Wicks
seriously excited for the FF team, how cool! Can't wait... runs to check the http://beta.friendfeed.com site for a sneak peak? please! :)
- Susan Beebe
You're in Pluto Land of the echo-sphere - people have been talking about it for 24+ hours now. :\ At this point I want people to STFU until it's launched!
- Mona Nomura
Big snooze. There were other skype-apps for the iPhone out already (e.g. Nimbuzz) and Skype is just late. I don't think we should see it as 'spectacular' then.
- Daan Berg
from twhirl
It's big news if it does skype in... but other then that... not really.
- Joshua Schnell
wifi only right?, and if i have wifi, im usually at home or have my computer with me, so id use the computer instead.
- Simon Wicks
showstopper in relationship AAPL/wireless-ops... finally...
- A.T.
What flavor does Steve like? [edit] Seriously, I think it would be interesting. Sort of like asking what your favorite animal is, I think it might reveal something.
- AJ Kohn
You know you are going to make AAPL stock rocket in the morning if you keep this up?
- Dominic Jones
Yeah, I saw him last month eating spicy Indian food and swiping through his black iPhone. He looked perfectly fine.
- Mason Lee
Are you stalking him or is this a 'walk a mile in his shoes' sort of thing?
- Admiral Anika
I'm watching the after-hours trading in AAPL to see if this great breaking news has any impact. Still four minutes left.... Will update :-)
- Dominic Jones
Ciaonenrico: I had a latte there too. The yogurt is the best in Northern California.
- Robert Scoble
So, he's still alive? ;) BTW, what is THE interview you wish to make in 2009?
- Konstantin
But clearly, he is not well... isn't it about time they say SOMETHING? :\
- Mona Nomura
Then what? Sell your stock? If Apple's value is so wrapped around one person isn't that a clear risk already?
- Hayes Haugen
Konstantin: 1. Barack Obama. 2. Steve Jobs. 3. Steve Ballmer. 4. Mark Zuckerberg. 5. Bret Taylor. 6. Evan Williams. 7. Jonathan Ives. 8. Vic Gundotra. 9. Barack's CTO. 10. A bunch of geeks who I don't know but who are changing the world.
- Robert Scoble
It has nothing to do with stock, it's handling smooth transitions IF there is something wrong so we (consumers) have confidence in them (Apple).
- Mona Nomura
Mona: we're all dying. I know a lot of people who have died that were very healthy. Or seemed to be. Marc Orchant anyone? I don't know that Steve isn't well. Having cancer can cause you to live healthy and lose weight. But, I already assume the dude will die. So will I. Until he's ready to talk I have to assume he's fine. Obviously he's not bedridden if he's coming into yogurt stores.
- Robert Scoble
Red Mango or Fraiche? I prefer Red Mango on University.
- Randy Ksar
from twhirl
Randy: I'm partial to Fraiche. Maybe we need a taste-off? :-)
- Robert Scoble
We're all speculating and won't know for sure until Steve Jobs either steps down or retires. Either which way, this is really bad on Apple's part because they are (to me) encouraging rumors and speculation, irresponsible journalism, and publishing. The question is: Are we ok with that?
- Mona Nomura
Mona: Apple is too secretive about everything. But that's who they are and they probably know that this publicity is good for them. It keeps us all wondering what the real story is. Guarantees everyone will attend Jobs' next press conference.
- Robert Scoble
If people are getting worried when a CEO is getting thin, shouldn't we be more worried over weight CEOs? They are more all of a heart attack time-bomb than SJ is a health risk. Why don't we ask all those fat CEOs to disclose *their* health record?
- Clarence Chiang
I'm not worried about him. Is no one familiar with the old adage, "An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away."
- Kevin Murray
Clarence: It's not just any CEO. It is Steve Jobs. Do you think his predecessor will generate this much news? Robert: I understand that, but that is so not ok, in my book.
- Mona Nomura
Mona: Apple doesn't listen to me on PR issues either. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Do they even make apple yogurt? It probably tastes better if you eat it with a mock turtle neck on.
- Keith Beucler
Great reporting Robert. The real losers here are the gossip sites like Gizmodo who perpetuate rumors with "anonymous sources" who are "100 %" correct.
- James
Why don't u interview him? I can see it now... "so who are you?"
- mal
That place is buzzing - why hasn't anyone else reported seeing him there?
- Jesse Stay
Hope he's well. In any case, despite all the coverage, what I haven't heard about is whether Apple's doing anything at CES? Do they usually exhibit? CES isn't something I've paid any attention to in the past but if Apple's becoming (as some are saying) the new Sony, wouldn't CES be important?
- Gordon Vaughan
Apple never goes to CES. Apple has its own show from now on: it's called its network of stores and Engadget. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Schnozberry! Who's ever heard of a schnozberry?
- Kerri
Now that Jobs has made his January 5 announcement, we can all reflect. In my view, even if they didn't know anything, Apple & Jobs should have made some sort of statement in December, when the Macworld announcement was made. It wouldn't have been perfect, especially since they may not have known about the hormonal imbalance at the time, but better to say something than nothing. If nothing else, it would have kept Robert out of the yogurt shop. :)

"To his surprise, in hundreds of tests at Ford’s Wind Tunnel 8 southwest of Detroit the original edges produced less drag than curved substitutes, Mr. Koester said. In the bumper, headlights and hood, in fact, aerodynamics were improved by carefully designed edges. Usually, aerodynamic shapes are rounded forms that slip through the air. But the wind tunnel is proving that counterintuitive, edgy shapes can reduce the drag coefficient and save fuel or battery power. Many people associate aerodynamics with getting rid of edges and corners. But redoubled efforts to reduce drag have led engineers and designers to some surprising shapes. The discoveries offer both practical and aesthetic implications."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
What was that song they played on the titanic?
- Todd Hoff
That's just a concept car, I promise you it will not look like that in real life, the low drag body is unpractical
- Jeremiah Owyang
Starting to make cars that look and act more european can´t be a bad thing, especially given the current circumstances. However, it seems those "discoveries" have been known to the leading euro carmakers for some time, and that makes Ford look even more sad pushing this "news" at this particular time.
- Thomas Bøhm
Ford haters forget that Ford is not part of the bailout and has been innovating. If they can get greener faster, more Euro and edgier, that's cool; why bash them?
- Phil Boiarski
Phil: Ford still finds itself in a hole which the whole of the US auto industry partly has dug themselves, even if Ford didn´t accept the bailout money. Nevertheless, the move described in the post is good and necessary, although a bit late. Of course I am biased, but I remember a time when US cars were considered superior cars in Europe, but that´s a while ago now. Hope to see a better Henry Ford legacy in the future.
- Thomas Bøhm
The front looks like the Predator's face

This is cool, but I'm following a feed of ALL new apps released. I would love to eliminate some of them, but I hate thinking I might miss a gem.
- Devon Campbell
Robert how much higher is the revenue???
- Susan Beebe
mattpovey - As someone who libels and assaults frequently... that scares me!
- Andrew
Susan: the bird wouldn't discuss numbers other than to say all estimates he has seen are low.
- Robert Scoble
great news. they've really captured the way people communicate quiet effectively.
- Rahul Krishnakumar
I just can't make myself like Facebook. In part I think it's not really wanting to keep up with old friends. Don't get me started on the stupid apps and the layout.
- BEX
Facebook is really growing in my neck of the woods...TONS of co-workers have jumped on FB now... all happening VERY fast. Transparency is the new reality. I get folks calling me from work asking how all this "social" sh*t works... LOL pretty shocked n00bies!
- Susan Beebe
I wonder if the progression remains "neopets" --> "myspace" --> "facebook" .. both my daughters went through these three distinct stages. IRC was in there for a bit; followed by forums and blogs; and now they just IM
- LPH™ and his dog P™
It is amazing how many customers now you directly communicate with on a daily basis through SMS, twitter and facebook.
- Shaun Haney
Most blogs report $150 m? I would put it between 200-300 M based on back of envelope calculations that assume a low RPM
- Bindu Reddy
Who told you? I am guessing someone from Facebook. They get a bad story, they "leak" to you it's not true, you post it. People believe you. Why don't they just people what they make if they care. Posting like this make you look like a shill.
- Michael Stearne
i never pay a attention to the adv on FB right slider.so the revenue i think should be lower than most blogs have reported:D
- jedorstar
If I could pay ten bucks to insta-ban all annoying app requests and pathetic ads, and more options for designing my front page, I'd go for it...
- Terry O'Fee
When this is anything more than unsubstantiated rumor, I'm sure they'll be happy to put their cards on the table.
- Sam
My forecaster's "sell" order stands. Or, buy puts, your choice. AOL didn't die in a day, either; in fact, it took one of the greatest value dumps of all time, directly upon the heads of Time Warner shareholders. Please, of course I know it's not public, I'm talking Cred Trend Puts. I can't imagine a single reason for the web needing FB by 2012; it was a cute start to socially stuff and MySpace UI cleanup, but the vast majority of The Normals will use it as a Social Registry and virtually never log in again.
- michael silverton
A revenue of $10 per user per year is achievable - advertising + premium vanity features ought to do it.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
As to longevity, I don't know - i dislike all the fluff in FB, apps and games, but I can see it growing into a living family tree - our parents are joining, our children are joining, and I now have a whole multi generational network including my parents' friends, my friends' parents - you get this whole "village" of real connections if you use it that way, quite warming when like you have moved countries a bit, and the value could grow. A grounding space in a increasingly disconnected and virtual world.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
@scoble: A lot more than 10$ per user? 1.4+ billion in revenues? Is that whtat we're talking about, or was it just what it worths?
- Martino Sabia
Martini I don't know the numbers. I thought I was being asked the value of each user.
- Robert Scoble
Facebook is becoming pretty common and integrating itself within the non-tech crowd. Is it only a matter of time before they roll out some type of subscription plan? I would be willing to pay monthly (maybe $10) As long as they keep adding new features and keep refining the interface.
- Bob Blunk
there have been stories on FF lately about how poorly ads do on social networking services compared to search advertising. Does anybody have different reports or experiences?
- Davide D'Incau
Doesn't surprise me, more friends of mine are joining it by the day.
- Ed Richardson
incentive ads perform poorly on a CPA basis; conversions occur for the wrong reason and have a high cancellation rate.
- Peter Warnock
It seems to me that FB is more embraceable for low tech people than Twitter
- Craig Mische
It's the apps, after the newness wears offs or the advertisers push back, FB will have to do some real marketing. They have a gold mine of data that they're not using.
- Peter Warnock
@Craig - How in Bob's name is a crazy multi layer, multi threaded, multi page, multi media mess easy for a ludite depression era grandmother to get than a single line where you post 140 characters?
- Matthew DeVries
If Facebook needs to start charging than they've failed at their mission and are leaving way too much money on the table. The power in facebook comes in the fact that they now know what we like, what we hate, who we follow, who we listen to. That is worth so much more to people than the pittance they'd be able to make by charging us a fee at a price we wouldn't run screaming to the hills over. They need to keep it "free" and sell that information to the ad people, the politicians, the entertainers.
- Matthew DeVries
""That was fast. It's barely Nov. 21 and the iPhone 2.2 update is here, all 246MB of it, as promised. Included in the update, according to the release notes and as we'd heard, are all the new Google Maps features we've been waiting for like Street View (which is so far butter smooth and delicious over Wi-Fi, slightly less magical over 3G), public transit and walking directions, as well as over-the-air podcast downloads, mail enhancements, Safari tweaks, improved sound quality for visual voicemail, fewer dropped calls (again), and more. But you know, not MMS or copy and paste. Grab it now.""
- Susan Beebe
The back piece is very difficult to install. I still prefer to carry my iPhone sans case, as most cases change the contours and minimal design aesthetic that make the phone distinctly Apple.

It really irks me that they are raising the price on the text plans. For example, the same 1500 SMS that I currently pay $10 will costs me $15 with the new iPhone. I'm thinking of just sticking with my 16 GB first gen iPhone Wi-Fi.
- James
Louis - we're expecting some updates as you go along. I've got two, but separated by 2 1/2 years. Want to hear about the twin experience.
- Hutch Carpenter
@Robert: Just created a 'Babyfeed' room. Working on inviting peeps.
- April Buchheit
YEAH!! Congratulations to you and your *entire* family... Happy Day 1!!
- Susan Beebe
louis, i just wanted to provide you with an analysis of how Matthew is doing so far - he was able to grab us 3 scoops away from the other west coast blogs. His content is good, sometimes I have to look out for the drool but he's doing well and I think at this rate he will be editor before he turns one!
- Allen Stern
Fantastic! Very glad to hear the whole family is home. Good luck and let the chaos begin!
- Rob Diana
Congratulations on the new additions to your family Louis.
- James
tip: (probably already know this tho) load up iTunes with some good baby tunes and get the visualizer going, it works wonders for fussy parents, oops, I mean babies! You might even drool as well. (or is it just me)
- TheMacMommy
from twhirl
and I notice you're up at the same time as I (I have a 3 month old). Glad to hear all are happy louis
- Jesse Stay
Er, that "happy" was supposed to be "healthy" - guess both work. I'm tired :-(
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Excellent news about everyone home now!
- Joe Dawson
@Scoble: let me know what you think. I know you use FF a lot on your phone, and you are quite a power user, so I have a feeling you will have a strong opinion and/or notice things we left out.
- Bret Taylor
I know you guys aren't out to compete with twitter directly, but putting that post text box at the top of the interface removes my last reason for twittering.
- Robin Barooah
looks great but interested to know why you chose to remove the hide function. It would seem well suited to mobile browsing and removing the noise a little more on the small screen
- Jon Dillon
Awesome job; renders well on my phone (a Moto Q9c) too
- Benjamin Golub
@Jon: You're right, we should add that back in.
- Bret Taylor
renders perfect. clicking youtube videos just work as intended... Here's a quick request. Search is at the bottom and scrolling endlessly to reach is a bit boring. Can you guys insert an anchor for a quick access to page bottom? And another anchor there for teleporting back to top.
- Berk D. Demir
from twhirl
again, enjoy the pic :) and the interface even more!
- MG Siegler
Very nice. I'm also posting from my iPhone. FF lends itself well to mobile use.
- Chris Baskind
The anchor to jump to the bottom would be nice. Tip: On any web page you can tap the 'status bar' at the top of the screen to jump up to the top of the page.
- Kevin Fox
I don't want to take credit for this or anything, but I just did ask about this today. I'm kidding by the way.
- Johnny Baker
This works REALLY WELL in a sidebar or Fluid App site specific browser. WAY better than the googlegadget URL we've been using. This interface in Fluid is my new favorite way to interact with FriendFeed. It's teh Awesome! Thanks! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
this is AWESOME - posting from my touch!
- Charles Hudson
A much needed improvement. This will be awesome on a 3G iPhone as well.
- Chris Rodgers
i'd still like to see the Comment/Like buttons made a little bit easier to hit. They have close proximity to the article link and using a finger isn't as accurate as a cursor.
- Jamie
Yeah, I just started using friendfeed today and can't see how you guys/gals did without this spiffy interface. Rocks!
- blastedblog
It looks fantastic, thanks guys it's a great job. FriendFeed is now even more useful.
- fbrunel
I would love the option to run links through the Google transcoder. FFtoGo has that and it's invaluable.
- Steve Rubel
You can also use http://tiltview.com to view the iPhone version of the site from your computer or other mobile phones . You need to select iPhone as a mobile type.
- seman
Love it! As soon as I open up the MBP I'm going to fire up Fluid.app and make a menu app with the iPhone interface.
- Ryan Cates
Seesmic videos could theorically been played on an iPhone. The Seesmic API also provides a link to the video in MP4, that's would be awesome to do that in the FriendFeed iPhone interface.
- fbrunel
Why do the "comment" and "like" links the load after the rest of the page? I almost missed them with EDGE's slow data.
- Frankie Warren
awesome! Anyone else want a bit more space around the "comment" and "like" links? I mis-poked on my first attempt.
- Kelly Norton
So awesome, great work! I love it. I'm sure you're aware but longer (horizontally) posts, such as those with multiple photos, do funky things to the layout.
- jakebf
@Jake, et al: we will do some work for posts with a lot of media to make it work better. Thanks for the feedback.
- Bret Taylor
It looks like the UAT testing with Scoble and team worked marvelously well - nice job Bret!! :*)
- Susan Beebe
I am back to the old version too. I miss Everyone tab, Search, and Hide features
- Robert Scoble
i agree with one of the comments. why a separate blog to capture comments - get them all using FF. easier to follow discussion. iphone interface looks great - i think i'm going to find myself using it a lot on my phone
- naveen
Awsome! It just needs search and it would be perfect! As far as the old interface went, it was pretty good for the iPhone as well.
- darnell
@Scoble: thanks for the feedback. They were known problems, but I think we can find the space to fit them in. Search is at the botto of every page, FYI.
- Bret Taylor
Very nice. Much prefer it to FFtogo ...
- Patrick Jordan
Very nice. However, on the iPhone it's very easy to jump to the top of the page (just tap the top bar) and very hard to get to the bottom of a long page (lots of scrolling). Can search be moved to the top?
- Stephen Mack
Very nice. Makes it much more useful on my iPhone. Like the picture option...
- simonpure
I agree with Stephen about "search". It's been quite the workout on the thumbs.
- m.0
Like the FF iPhone site, wish they would implement the same "hide" options as the full FF site.
- Joe Perrin
By "in stock" do you mean everywhere or anywhere? If a 3G iPhone is indeed announced tomorrow then I'll say 70% they'll have some in stock at at least some of their stores.
- Chrimmus Tad
I'm with MG, though I hope he's wrong too. And on the one hand I hope they *do *go for $199, but on the other hand if that's the case my gen 1 model just turned into a paperweight!
- Robert Seidman
I bet they're available by the end of the week. And many of the 1st buyers will be iPhone Gen 1 users. What happens to all those old iPhones?
- Rich Casey
@Tad I mean this - should I be prepared to go to the Apple Store after work?
- Steve Rubel
Online? Good. At big stores? Decent. At my podunk Apple Store? Slim to none.
- Cyndy
I say the old iPhones represent a huge opportunity for someone to start up a gadget subscription service to service those folks who weren't early adopters. They can get a still sexy-as-hell iPhone for a fraction of the price of what they were new. Either that or they can all go onto eBay. :D
- Chrimmus Tad
LOL MG, but I'm not sure they turn into heavenly iPhones unless you jailbreak them. Right now, you can't sync an iphone that hasn't been activated on AT&T and use it as a regular iPod w/o hacking it.
- Robert Seidman
I've got my money ready Steve, but I don't anticipate it being available for a few weeks. I just rewatched the SDK event and they clearly stated that v2 of the iPhone software would be released at the end of June
- Jamie
*Something* will be available right away (or within 2 weeks), either the 3G-iPhone2, or a cheaper entry-level/subsidized iPhone. Apple has been without stock for too long, they're not stupid, and they want to max out their Q3 shipments. But there's going to be quite a backlog of demand, so quantities will be tight at least for a few weeks.
- LogEx
My guess is 2 weeks, available from around the 19th, least here in australia (it's the date the Sydney store opens)
- Duncan Riley
I bet the app store will ship tomorrow.
- Steve Rubel
yeah, they'll need to give us something tomorrow. 2.0 software is a good bet.
- MG Siegler
Who cares - as long as the phone is tied exclusively to a service(AT&T in the U.S.), its going nowhere fast. It's kind of like a repeat of the Apple-exclusive hardware for Mac OS. That worked really well for market share and innovation...
- Zach Landes
absolutely not. Will be June 19 for the Australian Apple Store launch
- Allison
Seems reasonable that some will be in stock, enough to sell to people who have been waiting in line for weeks. If I get one, I don't expect to take the plunge for a few months.
- Mike Reynolds
rambn: funny, my family has five AT&T phones and I wouldn't use anything else now, at least in the San Francisco Bay Area. TMobile? Crap. Sprint? Crap. Verizon? That's as good as AT&T but they don't have iPhones, so they are out of my picture too.
- Robert Scoble
I don't know, but I really hope so! I have really become a fan boy :)
- Sean Ammirati
I think many of us are unhappy with our current provider. I know I an unhappy with Sprint and look forward to the day the contract is over. We have 5 lines counting the data card. I am looking forward to an iPhone.
- Johnny Sewell
@Robert Scoble My family is all in California except me and they are on Sprint. Very nice family plan, and the service has been fine. I think you met my sister Marni at Under the Radar. She's got data on sprint and it works well. Oh, and just because AT&T is "the best" doesn't mean its ridiculous that you should be locked into a service provider. What happened to choice?!?
- Zach Landes
You have choice, Zachary -- you can buy a Windows Mobile phone. :-) If Apple wanted to build a platform independent phone it wouldn't have gotten to develop the OS for the phone *it* wanted to build. The telcos were not too interested @ the time in a phone that nearly had a 1GB OS. I hope it is open to all carriers someday, but I'm glad it got built how Apple wanted it built.
- Robert Seidman
I'm betting immediate availability through the Apple store and in major markets. A couple weeks elsewhere.
- Chris Baskind
Almost certain that they won't be available until around the 18th at the earliest. Jobs will use the interim to build anticipation and for the free marketing. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but I also suspect that we'll only get demos of apps and have to wait until the end of June for the 2.0 firmware update.
- James
from fftogo
@Robert Seidman thats not a compromise I'm happy to make. About a week ago I wrote up my thoughts about this, incidentally...http://snipurl.com/2en25 [zachlandes.com]
- Zach Landes
@Zachary and you get the opportunity to not make that compromise. On the other hand, had Apple compromised, nothing remotely approaching what got built would've gotten built. That said, I do not love the "control" they are lording over us (no support of Flash, etc). It's not a perfect world, but I am very happy with the phone.
- Robert Seidman
It feels like Christmas Eve and Steve Jobs is Santa Claus!! :)
- Paul
@Robert I want one...but my Sprint family plan is too good to abandon. And I'm about go to England...does the iPhone work there?!
- Zach Landes
it works in the UK, but you may want to look into the international data plan or not use it for data unless you have WiFi.
- Robert Seidman
Bold prediction. I'll still be using my Thinkpad.
- Morton Fox
I can hear Jobs' sinister world conquering laugh now. I really need to upgrade my g4 PB :(
- Greg Tarnoff
from twhirl
Decent enough logic although he probably would've gained credibility if he hadn't have suffixed a deadline to it all.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I saw an article the other day that said Apple had 66% of the total market share of computers costing >$1000. I was shocked.
- Robert Lee
from twhirl
Thomas I agree that if price is not a criteria Apple wins. But I just had to take a Dell as the cost was half of a MacBook Pro. It hurts but saving $1600 buys a lot of bottles of wine.
- Jon Erickson
from twhirl
Robert, and as someone else recently quipped, that's like saying Rolls Royce sells 66% of all cars over $200,000.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Jon went the route I did. Took a Dell for much less so I could afford other things... like rent, food, gas. =D
- jerry
I'm not sure I'm buying the Rolls-Royce analogy at the $1000 price point, but I understand your point.
- Robert Lee
from twhirl
I wish that would come true; but I know it won't, not within a year atleast. The philosophical conflict is much greater than it seems like. Since An year ago when I made the switch, I have myself converted atleast three friends to Mac devotees. But it is only after I have tried to convince 30. People choose Ubiquity over Experience. TCO over Hidden Costs.
- Parth Awasthi
Agree with the sentiments, but I don't think the large enterprise market will adopt Apple yet. We'll see if iphone 2.0 starts making inroads here as well.
- Eric Thompson
@ Jon Erickson - Just out of curiosity, how did the Dell that you saved "$1600" on match up feature wise against the MBP. I know from just playing on dell.com that when you configure a Dell that is comprable to a MBP that they are normally very close in price with the Dell sometimes being more expensive. As for market share, BMW and Mercedes engineer some of the finest automobiles on the road and they will always fulfill a niche. Likewise for the Mac...and that is ok.
- James
@James I tried to get the configs as close as possible, 4g ram, dual processor 2.5, 320g hd, 17 inch monitor, everything similar. Dell had $400 off promo but total before tax and ship $1600 the MBP was $3200. I wanted the MBP, but want could I do?
- Jon Erickson
from twhirl
Updated my mobile FF rant and am pleased to be able to do so ;)
- Colin Walker
wow, the iphone version is nice. doesn't look that much different than online.
- Rob Diana
Just tried this on my Treo 700p and it seems pretty sweet. @Colin @acedanger - I have mine memorized too....it is sad.
- elroy
It even works on a Blackberry - that is way cool @bgolub
- Sally Church
Hmm...it doesn't pull up on my iPhone like the picture...shows full-size and the text is too small.
- Paul Arterburn
beautiful job. writing this from my treo 700wx, the world's worst cell phone. if it works here it will work for anyone. thank you for developing this.
- Michael Pardee
So sweet. Working great on my Palm Centro! Good job folks!
- Dan Nimtz
from twhirl
@JP try again? I just had some errors that I fixed
- Benjamin Golub
tried and get "whoops something went wrong" when I try to comment.
- Thomas Hawk
Sweet, gotta try it at lunch, my colleagues won't be happy with me though.
- Caleb Elston
Very nicely done. That is just what I was looking for in a mobile version of FF!
- Scott Jarkoff
I look forward to trying this on my iPod..as soon as I can find a wireless connection.
- Mike Lewis
Not working for me :( Just to be specific, when I put in my username and key and click "Login" it just goes back to the sign in screen. I've tried several times.
- Vince DeGeorge
Sigh; Google App Engine has for some reason stopped sending authorization headers. I'm looking into it.
- Benjamin Golub
Not working for me either. Can't log in.
- Morton Fox
Regular Friendfeed works great on my iPod.
- RAPatton
I'll have to try this (1st gen Moto Q with Windows Mobile 5 and IE4)
- Ontario Emperor
I love all the rapid innovation that's going on here! Nice job Benjamin :)
- Aviv
Looks very nice on the iPhone, but where is the search functionality? Thanks for your time and hard work developing a great app Benjamin.
- James
It seems to work ok on my SE P1i, but I dont really like this remote key thing...
- Fredrik Wennberg
from fftogo
unless you have Verizon for your carrier. Brightkite won't work with Verizon either (in my experience)
- Greg Hollingsworth
from twhirl
Atleast the FriendFeed remote key is easy to remember. Very "human like". I already memorized mine by the third time I had to punch it in
- Bartek Ciszkowski
Twitter doesn't work (properly) with Verizon, either. I never get device updates.
- Steve Lynch
from Alert Thingy
funny twitter works for me fine on my verizon phone but not at all on my N75 w/ATT
- Morgan
from twhirl
Iv'e got the same problem as Vince DeGeorge on WM6
- rodmitch
testing FriendFeed for mobile right now. pretty neat! thanks @louisgray
- Myriam
from fftogo
I've used it on iPhone and it works pretty well. I also have used it on Nokia N95 and N82 phones and it works OK there (I hate the web browser on those phones when compared to iPhone). I heard it doesn't work on Windows Mobile smart phones but haven't tested that yet.
- Robert Scoble
iPhone friendly UI? One thing i like about Twitter is excellent mobile eco system
- Michael Gartenberg
I tried it on the iPhone, but I want an app like mobileTwitter/Twinkle or else m.friendfeed.com, maybe in the mold of the new Google Reader
- Fearghas
It doesn't seem to load on a Blackberry or my Windows mobile cell
- Dom
FriendFeed needs the equivalent of hahlo.com.
- Akiva Moskovitz
there are still some bugs on the iPhone. On the "me" tab for instance the services box overlays the text which is annoying. Agree that they need a better m.friendfeed sort of site built specifically for mobile.
- Thomas Hawk
I'm commenting from my iPod Touch right now, so the functionality is there...
- Louis Gray
On my Blackberry the font is way too HUGE, even though I have my font set to the smallest setting in the browser options.
- Jason R. Hunter
friendfeed renders ok with winmo6/ie on the blackjack, but you can't expand comment threads AND you can not take an action: comment/like, etc. it is read only. moreover, the experience on the referenced site can suck pretty bad
- rob zand
The iPhone uses WebKit, which is the core of Safari on the desktop, and is therefore AJAX capable. Most mobile browsers do not share this capability. AJAX should be a bonus, not a requirement, for using a website, particularly one whose functionality is as simple as FF's. http://hesketh.com/publica...
- Jason Wehmhoener
Use it on the iPhone horizontally and it looks and works great. I just wish the bookmarklet would work in Mobile Safari.
- Vince DeGeorge
I agree with Vince. It's close on the iPhone, but almost every other mobile device suffers.
- Bwana ☠
@Jason agreed 100%; I love all the AJAX here but I wish it degraded nicer...it's a difficult problem to solve (I tried for RSSmeme but gave up when it came to comments)
- Benjamin Golub
yeah, why doesn´t the bookmarklet work on the iPhone ?
- peter huesken
The site renders reasonably well on the iPhone, but it would be nice to have a mobile version. With all these former googlers around, you would think we would see such a version very soon.
- James
With a lot of sites lately, and with Google, it feels like if you don't have an iPhone you don't matter any more. Heck I would probably get one but I have a work phone I'm stuck with, and don't want to carry two phones. Even if I did have one I still don't think it's right to focus so much on only one brand/device.
- Jason R. Hunter
i can read the posts on my nokia e61 but can't comment. bad.
- Benedikt Koehler
I've found that Friendfeed only half works on my mobile browser
- Mel Francis
It works ok on an iPhone, but a more mobile-friendly version (like Google Reader or Twitter clients like Hahlo) would be easier and more fun to use.
- Bryan Landers
I can use it with my BlackBerry browser, but limited functionality. For instance, I can't "like" anything. I also can't add friends.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
Loic, instead why not build a web/ mobile version of Twhirl? Or even better, make it a download for mobiles
- Duncan Riley
from twhirl
I agree there should be a m.friendfeed.com. But with MojiPage (http://sb.mojipage.com/u/wil1/) you can get about 3/4 of FF on your phone... mobile rendering, Like and Comment links. But still no Share Something or threaded conversations... unles I just can't figure it out. Why did FF not think to have m.FF?
- Mark Arend
from Alert Thingy
I would love to see a mobile optimized version of FF. Although FF does mostly work on an iPhone, it's not the most compelling experience. Methinks it would be a lot more user friendly if there was an actual mobile and/or iPhone version of FF available for use.
- Scott Jarkoff
@BretTaylor @Paul Buchheit - Hey Loic is asking a terrific question, which echos my previous request! I've been asking about a mobile version "m.friendfeed.com" site too. When can we get this?? ;-)
- Susan Beebe
While we're on the topic of FF "feature requests," FF definitely needs some kind of @user reply support for comments which mention folks in the manner @susan just mentioned @bret and @paul. Otherwise, unless I'm mistaken, those people will never see the comment and have no idea something is being said "to" them.
- Scott Jarkoff
I think FriendFeed looks good on an iPod Touch.
- Mike Reynolds
There is no reason someone couldn't make their own m.friendfeed.com. The API exposes everything you'd need (comments/likes/etc). I've considered doing it myself....
- Benjamin Golub
I think the @ feature is the biggest feature missing from ff. Its how I find new people on twitter. It really doesn't work as well on ff.
- Nelson de Witt
I know everyone love teh iPhone but what about those of us that don't have it and won't be getting one? :T
- Jennie Lin
Opera browser on the blackberry renders it pretty well
- Tim Connors
Yes I've already suggested that. We need a mobile friendly friendfeed.
- Svartling
I would have to agree the m.friendfeed.com for my Treo would make me a happy camper.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Come on guys. Make a mobile/iPhone optimized version of FF already.
- James
We do need an optimized mobile/iPhone page for friendeed. The regular site is ok but it's not quite good enough....unless you want eye strain headaches..
- Mike Lewis
Happy to know it works well on the iphone but I only use a blackberry these days. This reminds me I want the new one!
- Loic Le Meur
from twhirl
If I had this mobile, I'd never get anything done!!
- Charlie Anzman
I use a new BlackBerry Curve 8830 and FriendFeed does NOT work on it. twitter does... come'on FriendFeed we want MORE free features! ;-)~
- Susan Beebe
The FF login page breaks on Opera Mini 4.1. Don't know about the rest of FF yet.
- Morton Fox
Does FF work in browsers that don't support AJAX? Progressive enhancement is a frontend engineering best practice that makes it possible for any website to work in a mobile browser without a separate subdomain. AJAX should be a "bonus" for browsers that support it, not a requirement for the site's basic functionality.
- Jason Wehmhoener
I've been talking about this for a while, we definitely need some way to get functionality on all mobile devices. Great it works on an iPhone but we haven't all got iPhones. If we're not going to have m.ff then we need a mobile client that covers ALL bases.
- Colin Walker
No, seriously, not "m." - doing it properly is so much better. The mobile web needs to die. There is just 'the web'.
- Tom Morris
second that. both that we need it, and that we dont need m. we just need a version that knows where its shown on. or some app like twibble for FF.
- kosmar
Wow it sure be hard to read the volume of content on any mobile device
- Tim FitzGerald
actually cedar rapids, ia is my favorite city. perfect size and location. winters are a little rough at times, but i couldn't live a winter w/o snow on the ground.
