"So what happened? Wasn't webOS the greatest thing since the original iPhone OS? Wasn't the Pre a great phone? How did Palm blow it so badly? I was a Pre user up until January of this past year, when the Nexus One came out. I went with Palm as far as I could, but in the end, I bailed. Here's where I think Palm went wrong, and why I left the Pre."

that is a good article JC. not sure how I missed. oh, maybe because I'm behind on my Google Reader.
- chrisofspades
The same here Jared. I love WebOS, not nuts about the phone itself though (build quality). My fiancee has HTC Hero, and while Android is cool, WebOS is a good bit better IMHO. I'm hoping more robust hardware is announced before June (which will also signal my repurchase of $PALM), and if so I will stay with Palm, otherwise its Android and the HTC Supersonic for me.
- JCunwired
For now, probably the hero or moment, but the evo blows them away. still no keyboard so i'm kinda ehhhh, but we'll see, paul says the keyboard is great
- Richard Lawler
you aint lyin, the specs on the Evo are ridiculous.
- chrisofspades
yeah it's the new jesus phone. just wish sprint were announcing wimax in my area.
- Richard Lawler
you could always move. then drop a mixtape about it. "rjcc presents FROM YPSI 2 LA".
- chrisofspades
Official Brooktroit collabo due 2011, lol
- Richard Lawler
EVO? Supersonic? Same phone or two different?

Official: Verizon slashes Palm Pre Plus to $49.99, Pixi Plus to $29.99. Mobile Hotspot plan now free | PreCentral.net - http://www.precentral.net/verizon...
"Update x2: several members in the comments with existing Mobile Hotspot plans note that their cost has magically dropped from $40 a month to $0. "
- Rodfather

I hope this sets a trend. No more 'tethering' fee. People will want a WiFi hotspot paired with the iPad or other devices.
- Rodfather
Verizon is very smart to do this on the eve of the iPad launch. It may force AT&T to do the same.

"They were THRILLED. They were going to the Mobile World Congress the next week, and they really wanted to be able to show that off. I had 3 days to get some Qt demo apps running on it. I ran out and bought a Pre and got started. It was a lot of fun. Oh, and here's our client's app running on the Pre (yes, that's WebKit)"

"Qt (pronounced 'cute') is Nokia's attempt at creating a 'write once, run anywhere' programming platform - learn more here. It's a big deal for them as they deal with supporting S60 and their new Meego linux platform (which Maemo will be merged into). The idea is that developers will be able to create their app in Qt and have it run on both S60 and Meego - and darn near everything else they can get it running on. Add one more platform to that list - webOS. Darron Black successfully ported Qt to webOS in time for a demo at Mobile World Congress. Nokia was naturally thrilled and blogged it up themselves (twice)."

Can someone help me with some must have Apps? I have Twee I have pandora and Slacker, I have preware, what else should I have? What are some super cool apps?
I'm a big fan of the 5x4 icons tool. It makes your icons smaller, and you may find yourself hitting the wrong one occasionally, but it's nice to see a boatload of apps on one page.

"Online music service Grooveshark is today announcing the launch of a native app for devices running Palm webOS, or in other words the Palm Pre and Pixi phones. With the app, Grooveshark users gain access to its vast on-demand song catalog – the number of tracks in there runs in the millions – but also to the personal playlists and favorites they and other users have cultivated on the kick-ass music service."
- chrisofspades

Anybody use Grooveshark? What sets it apart from the other streaming radio sites?
- Rodfather
well, I think it's more about finding and playing the music you want, rather than just being a radio site. it does have radio capabilities, but I still use Pandora for that. but whenever I wanna listen to Tevin Campbell - insert your own specific artist there - I go to Grooveshark. and I can build my own playlist if I don't want to be at the whim of online radio.
- chrisofspades
I signed up. It's more like blip.fm which is cool. Was able to find some AC/DC and Beatles which usually isn't found on subscription services.
- Rodfather
The App itself looks pretty slick and their selection of songs is top notch.
- G Dub of the Carolinas
Just signed up myself. Apparently its a 2 week or 50 song free trial?
- JCunwired
I've listened to well over 50 songs and longer than 2 weeks. I thought they had a freemium model, but maybe that's changed?
- chrisofspades
oh I see what you mean now. the webOS app has a free trial then you have to pay.
- chrisofspades
No, I was confronted with that message when I signed up on Grooveshark via the web. I'll let you know when I cross the threshold.
- JCunwired
yeah, I was quite annoyed at this, too. URGH. Though, I think that this has more to do with geolocation working with the browsers than anything. All these other phones, it does (even WinMo can install Google Gears for Mobile to get it working). I don't think that Pre can. Or maybe it can, and Google has never bothered to investigate how to do it.
- Chieze Okoye
I like what they did, but would have preferred a non web-based solution. What portion of the functionality was weird?
- JA Castillo
Cool. Instead of the app calling my phone then connecting me to the other party, it sends me a prompt with a sort-of local number to dial and once I do it connects to the other party immediately. Kinda wonky for caller ID's sake but it's faster.
- Josh Haley
having to dial some custom local number is the weird part. since this is a mobile web app, I expected it to function like the Google Voice website, where it calls you
- chrisofspades
It's so irritating that Apple forces Google to implement a kludge like this. It's a perfect example of how web apps can never be a full replacement for native apps.
- Kevin Fox
it's also irritating that Google declines to work with Palm on creating a webOS app. I'm sure Palm would jump at that opportunity.
- chrisofspades
Josh, you can configure gDialPro to do the same thing, to either dial from the device or use web dial.
- JCunwired
Kevin, a correction may be in order. While I will never buy into the full cloud-based computing and 100% web based application functionality, I would have to say that this is indicative of cloud computing and Apple ecosystem playing nicely. THAT will never happen.
- JCunwired
...hmm, not sure Google has any incentive to work with Palm on a webOS app for Voice when they already have a competing mobile platform of their own
- .LAG liked that
LAG, same reason they provide a google maps app for webos

"That's right folks. Hot on the heels of our iPhone app release (which has since skyrocketed up the App Store charts to #1 in News), the webOS version has officially landed. You'll see that the experience is shockingly, wonderfully similar to the iPhone / iPod touch version, but of course there are a couple of webOS flourishes to be found. You can download the application right from your Pre or Pixi by simply popping open the App Catalog and, you know... downloading the thing. This is the 1000th application in the Catalog -- a piece of info we feel pretty psyched about. We've got even more on the way (like BlackBerry and Android versions), so keep it tuned here, but for now... webOS fans, go get your fix!"

seems to be working at the moment, but I haven't used it in days
- Richard Lawler
Strange. I haven't found evidence of others having problems, but even after reinstall it's not getting it's feed, so back to RSS for my Engadget fix.
- JCunwired
from iPhone
We've had a few people complain about it, so there must be something going on, no idea what it is yet. I still haven't seen it though
- Richard Lawler
I've been trying to test myself to see if any other applications installed could have affected, and I'm not able to come to any conclusions. If I had to venture a guess there is something wrong between application launch and reading of xml data feed (I presume its xml).
- JCunwired
Do I go around trashing your Silverlight threads? ;-) Oh, sorry... serious Q?... It's the OS the Pre and Pixi use. Webkit + A Javascript framework for building apps + Javascript library to access the hardware
- Ken Sheppardson
Does it provide javascript access to the local address book, etc?
- Cliff Gerrish
Sorry about the "trashing" crack. I'm used to people asking that question facetiously. :-/
- Ken Sheppardson
I agree with your first comment, Ken, which is why I've reduced myself to offering the services of a contract killer. Exhibit A in support of why I need one: this posting showed up twice due to refresh problems.
- aldenoneil
Kshep, the set of APIs available to Javascript via WebKit is different on iPhone, Android and Palm. Has anyone mapped this differences?
- Cliff Gerrish
Not that I know of. It'd be slick to come up with a common set...
- Ken Sheppardson
"Ready for an update? webOS 1.4 is coming in February, and its bringing along a lot of goodies. First you can expect to have Flash 10.1 built-in, though the beta should be available soon from the App Catalog. Second, there’s video recording. Third, there’s the standard upgrade deal of better battery life, faster performance, and all that jazz. But Flash and video recording? That’s big."
