Yay ketchup! It's fun when you're old enough to dip by yourself, huh, Matthew?

It was his first time tasting ketchup and I'd say it was a success.

One of our first pictures of our daughter - taken when she was much younger than Matthew or Sarah - was when her grandpa gave her a donut. The face was similarly messy...but she couldn't do it all by herself like Matthew did.

"PageRank assigns a reputation score to the URL where content is published. This makes it a great fit for content that stays put in one location. However, evolving content distribution via blogs, RSS, guest columns, and syndication are a challenge for PageRank. Tweets, retweets, micropublishing, ratings, and comments - even bigger problems. The solution lies in associating reputation with the identity of the author - a PageRank for People."

Reminds me of "wuffie" where personal reputation replaces monetary wealth in Cory Doctorow's DOWN AND OUT IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM.

Doctors are catching on to this and have slipped a "patient will not post online comments about doctor" clause into their standard forms. You don't even know you've agreed to it unless you read the whole thing, and who does that?
- jjjobst
Desirable, but immensely difficult: how do you define a "person" for rank purposes? We are talking here about a huge collection of disparate things. And, what if, contrary to the online reputation, the real reputation sucks?
- Nikos Anagnostou
Agree that we need a soltion for this but a Nikos touches upon is need to agree definitions of scope. Others male valid point also some further discussion and thinking required.
- Najeeb Mirza
PersonRank tied to (possibly) OpenId anyone? ...Everytime I click „Like“ FF brain is assigning whuffie to the author of a message.

Doesn't Googles Sentiment Analysis a step in the right direction? It infers sentiment to rank http://www.seobythesea.com/... and “service,” “value,” and “general comments.” Aspects are defined in one of Google’s papers on sentiment analysis as “properties of an object that can be rated by a user.” Unfortunately, Google is attempting to Patent this process.
- Greg
Yup. This made me think of "Down and out in the Magic Kingdom" too. If you haven't read it, it's worth it.
- Chad McCoskey
I would say not desirable - relevance is highly relative when it comes to people, and frankly anything that ranks people by the noise they make online and how many people they can get to claim they are great... will produce the wrong kind of behaviour
- Iphigenie
I agree with Joelle, mostly. The exceptions would be for trolls and spammers -- it's too much work to be on a constant lookout for trolling, and I'd really like to have an automatic metric which would enable me to automatically filter out such rubbish.
- Nathaniel Thurston
leo: yes indeed, and such a content filter would work well by taking into account the distance through the social graph between the author and each reader, rather than using a fixed measure of the author's reputation for all readers.
- Bob Hitching
from fftogo
Nathaniel - I might agree for spammers, but "trolls" are a difficult thing. Many game changing people were labelled troublemakers first, today we'd call them trolls...
- Iphigenie
Hi Guys - I'm the author of the original article. One thing to keep in mind is that this system could be made topic sensitive. We'd be looking at total contribution/reputation for each person for a specific social graph relating to a specific topic. Is some ways this would be like mapping the Hilltop/HITS algorithms used in algorithmic text search to the social space. The similarity is...

The problem with any such measure is that some people will take it far too seriously - make it into something authoritative instead of something helpful - and some people will game it. I dont want to have to think about my "score" in any field and have to "work" in the way the score measure in order to be taken seriously
- Iphigenie
Interesting post, I was just thinking today when reading about Listiti.com about how Twitter Lists plus this new form of "Track"/search on them can at least partially solve that problem: Just pick a reputable List, one that is large enough to create a thorough but vetted "universe of discourse" (e.g. Scoble's Tech-News-Brands with 500 entries). Then you're searching over that set, and not over the entire freaking Internet. This pretty much bypasses all of Google's PR machinations and their gaming by SEOs.
- Alex Schleber
On SocialToo we're assigning a rank to people based on various points assigned by other people they come in contact (via follow, dms, etc). It has the potential to become this.

But isnt the problem then that all you see and hear is from the "big guys" who are already established, as defined by "in" players who by nature will want to be in the "big guys" good books? We're right back in the landscape of television, where the barrier of entry for new players is high, opinion and value is centrally defined... and we get lower quality and service as none of them tries very hard...
- Iphigenie
Somehow it seems the iPhone will always win on hardware. You know, unless they make a Droid phone brown and able to squirt songs to other Droid phones.

Side note: I have opted to not share any of the stories that result from the confidential items from Twitter that are being released one by one. That they leaked was newsworthy, yes, but if you want that news, you can get it many other places.
Louis: did you get the leaked info? I didn't. Makes that decision easy! :-)
- Robert Scoble
louis gray, too nice to be a cut throat publisher but still a really great guy :)
- sean percival
I did not get the leaked info. But those that did are now publishing some of the details, and to share them on Google Reader seems like the wrong thing to do. I may share ValleyWag every once in a while, but I'll skip these.
- Louis Gray
Whoever has that stuff should drop it quickly like a red-hot potato, for what it's worth. But I don't see that happening any time soon, sadly.
- Tyson Key
I admire your work ethics and probably would have done the same, myself. Still, after watching some of the leaked docs, TV show - was already known, future merchandise store - big deal lots of 3rd party companies already sell Twitter stuff, Premium accounts - not a secret we have SUL, GMAIL/GoDaddy accounts - haven't seen something unusual etc. Bottom line, I wouldn't publish a thing...

Absolutely stand for something. I say it is a clear golden rule situation. Twitter could release such info if they choose to but if I received it I'd return it. If I were in the media I would definitely want to write about it but the line on not publishing said illegally obtained docs is clear and not grey.

Colby, if you read the comments, and just do a search for "@arrington" to find Mike's comments, he is very level-headed about the situation and makes sense. I understand what he is doing, but am opting out of spreading the results. I was at a dinner with Mike on Monday and enjoyed the CrunchUp Friday, so this is not a personal issue in any way. I hope he makes smart decisions.
- Louis Gray
Yes but he could end up in jail for this and that's not being level headed.
- Thomas Power
Thomas, I am not a legal expert in this case, and think that there are some who are advising him, as well as his own background, so I would guess that is unlikely.
- Louis Gray
Yeah I read Arrington's posts and can see his perspective but it seems like he is alienating his readerbase. I suppose that is only a small fraction of the readers though. It will be interesting to see how much they reveal, and if twitter pursues litigation (I assume they have the right...?)
- Colby
Same here. I don't want to spread that nonsense.

Sam: no. I'm uploading photos. Then going to bed.
- Robert Scoble
Um, I changed my FACEBOOK settings to be "for everyone." New settings that just were turned on in the past few days, as far as I can tell.
- Robert Scoble
I messed up and said "friendfeed" when I meant Facebook. Sam, yep, I have 5,300 people waiting to be my friend. I can't add more than 5,000.
- Robert Scoble
Sam: I just have started getting the first spam in the past week. I hear that multi level marketers are grabbing phone numbers off of Twitter and spamming them.
- Robert Scoble
Sam: I have a system to weed out phone spammers, though. I don't accept calls from blocked caller IDs, for one. For two I hang up on any salesperson.
- Robert Scoble
Sam: yeah, once in a while. Usually only after I post to call me, though. Real geeks are usually a little shy.
- Robert Scoble
I've always promoted it as a super twitter. Get with the times ;-)
- Keith Barrett
Do you keep a separate Facebook for personal use because my family couldn't care less what I say re biz
- Kathryn Martyn
Kathryn: Nope, I'm just one person and if anyone doesn't like it they can unfollow. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert, my system is if they aren't in my phone book I let them leave a message. If they're some one I want to talk to later I add them to my phone book after they leave a message and call them back. Technically, I could probably get Google Voice to do this for me - I should set that up.
- Jesse Stay
Robert: "Real geeks are usually a little shy' haha but true...hey, did you have your breakfast yet...hint hint

I actually never thought about Twitter when writing headlines. I usually just end up rewriting the headline anyway. Usually into a question. Why don't I just do that in the first place? Cuz I like to do stuff the hard way, that's why
- Rah-PM 2012
I write my headlines for friendfeed. That way no one will read them.
- Robert Scoble
Did Robert just type something? Because I don't see it.
- Louis Gray
I write my headlines for my Mom. And other regular readers of my blog. If Google or Twitter likes the headlines, nice, if not, I don't care.
- Bora Zivkovic
I am with Bora. Mine are targeted at friends and readers who might appreciate that particular headline.
- Deepak Singh
I also don't import my blog RSS into Twitter - I don't like when others do it either. I don't see T as a broadcast place, but a conversation parlor.
- Bora Zivkovic
This probably has something to do with that phrase "monetize the blog" ;-) Being on Scienceblogs.com, I am listed on Google News, so I don't have to worry about traffic. I don't think I (or most people) can earn money on the blog itself - but the blog is a tool to get known, so paying gigs fall into your lap (they do to me...). It is your PR, not the actual source of income. Thus no need to game the Googles....
- Bora Zivkovic
While there is some overlap, there are some differences between my Facebook, FriendFeed, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter groups. Some people can only be found on one of the services, and if you want to reach them, you have to go where they are.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Even if someone is on multiple services, I use them in different ways. I'm probably not going to talk twins with Louis on LinkedIn, for example - I use that network for a different purpose.

Jason: neat thing about friendfeed is you can create your own secret club and hide inside here from everywhere else.
- Robert Scoble
I got in contact with my family again after 6 years. Because of one of my nieces finding me on Facebook. It's also the only way to keep in touch with all the backpackers and budget travelers I've come in contact with over the last year.
- Rick Powell
I still prefer blogs - both reading/contributing to others and working on my own - but I have grown kinda fond of Twitter. And I use LinkedIn, but am very judicious about who I "friend" on that service since it's intended as a professional networking tool. FaceBook is kinda lost on me but my wife likes it...
- Rob O'Daniel
I've had a facebook account for quite sometime, and I'm still not convinced I totally get it. But just this last week I've been able to reconnect with some friends that I'd lost contact with. Friends that are not likely to use twitter, or friendfeed or read/participate in a blog, so maybe I am getting it just a little bit finally :D
- craterdweller
As I get older, I find more tolerance and appreciation for superficial relationships. As long as they don't encroach upon my reclusive habits too much. My Facebook account gathered cobwebs for almost a year, until I found a new attitude precisely because enough others came on board to make it worth hanging out. It's the perfect venue to stay in touch with people I like in a shallow sort of way, requiring very little expenditure of energy for the amusement I get in return.
- Rebecca Lasley
I am reminded of this anti-civilization song "I Was Born Under a Wandering Star" by Lee Marvin http://www.youtube.com/watch... I think it captures the sentiments express by Scoble.
- Dutch Driver
Facebook has got me back in touch with people I haven't seen for years, and which I'd have liked to stay in touch with. That's only happened because it's become super-popular. If you want to hide, the internet is not a good place to do it.
- Ian Betteridge
I agree totally with louis. While it's nice to have smaller more private areas on twitter and friendfeed (as stated by scoble in the comments section), it's also nice to have somewhere to catch up with my no techy friends. The mass acceptance of facebook along with my fairly selective number of friends means that i can keep up with a number of people who i would otherwise lose track of.
- Jamie Vidamour
IRL I've noticed the water cooler talk is starting to include connections with old friends. When you listen, you'll hear the meta messages.
- Dutch Driver
Awesome post Cyndy!!! :) Glad to see you writing again. Cool idea to guest blog on LG's blog !!
- Susan Beebe
My one little footnote to Jason's piece is that this isn't unique to the internet. It's really the same thing you see any time technology gets between people, whether it's two people in their little four-wheeled metal cages on the freeway at 80mph trying to "get even" with each other or some guy screaming at a Customer Service Rep on the phone.
- Ken Sheppardson
The measure of a person's civility likes in their ability to empathize with their fellow humans. The factors which make each of us more or less civilized are contained in the fabric of our own personal experience. Because that fabric is woven so differently for each of us it will never be possible for everyone to be equally "civilized". Historically, the civilized have had to put up walls to keep out the uncivilized and so it will eventually be in our virtual communities.
- Mike Elliott
Actually, being spat on isn't Internet civility, but real-world civility. No one deserves to be spat upon, but Arrington's claims against other bloggers who urge crazy people to attack him is far less civil than the treatment he is receiving in the wake of his posting about rethinking his career choices.
- Mitch Ratcliffe
from twhirl
I have to admit, this is deeper commentary than I thought I would be reading...I do not know you very well, of course, but this showed me why I may want to follow more of what you are into, Mr. C.
- TechChic
@Mitch: I doubt Arrington deserves it, but lots of people deserve a lot worse than merely being spat upon. However, I think it's a positive development when people on the internet manage to overcome the cowardice of anonymity to actually do something aggressively rude IRL. Arrington will get over it.
- Rob Sterling
Arrington is just a Big Cry Baby! He Flames people for PR but cannot handle attention! FAIL

Losing empathy happens in cycles in every civilization. It's a cycle. Not a virtuous one. Thanks for your great post, Jason.

I made a new list called "Twitter Clone" and will slowly migrate folks to more frequently viewed lists. Check out the new feature here: https://friendfeed.com/setting...
- Louis Gray
Mona, that only is true if I'm active on a ton of other friends' activity. Theoretically, unless my total activity per day increases, you won't see a change, just new people!
- Louis Gray
I actually don't want to sync them. I follow people on FF for different reasons than Twitter.
- mikepk
The only downside is that it also sent 184 subscription requests to private feeds. So that means when those private subscriptions approve the request, it hits the home feed. Then I have to move the new adds to the lists manually. And they can accept at any time.
- Louis Gray
Lost count but maybe I saved myself some future work. I added new ones on a separate list just in case I want to see later what I've got in there :)
- Carlos Lorenzo
40 new friends and two requests (private feeds? ick!)

how do you honestly filter all these information flows? What king of filters features would you like to be able to set up? would you like APML based recomndation?

I should have done what Louis did. I just added everyone to Home feed, and now sorting it out is a total mess. Oops. :|

My number was similar. Now come all the e-mails showing they followed back.

as mentioned above, by several people, add these people into their own list, before moving them across to your 'main' lists. Also, running this script / feature needs to be done on a regular basis to keep up with your new followers
- martin english
I added 240 and put them in their own list like Louis until I decide what to do with them
- Sally Church
Just checked that out. Funny thing, is none of those people, save one guy who I thought I was subbed to here, are actually active on FF. Which is why they are either in my Dumpers list or I unsubbed from them.

I just did this, started a new list for these... but how do i see how many it was? can't see that anywhere?

Rampantheart just create a Twitterimport Friend list and then you can sort them out from there. (Imported 183)

so, its now i get hit in the face for having auto-follow back on twitter. I have no clue who all those people are, probably marketeers... but dont want them to clutter my friendfeed stream... Guess the most important thing I´ve learned today is that I need a total Twitter clear up

This is something that should have been done a long time ago, but I am glad it is now available. Would be nice if they ran it for you every N days. If I follow you on Twitter auto add them in FF.

Chris - you nailed it! At the end of the day, it’s all about the disclosure. If you’re up front about who you’re doing business with and what potential conflicts might exist between sponsors & content, people can read/digest you knowing that there might be a bias. With that said, you always do a good job separating church and state.
