I'm just against the party who fundamentally believes it is unfair that some people are more successful than others, takes the money of the successful in the form of taxes and redistributes that wealth to those who work less or not at all. It IS a great vote buying tactic.

Tim is absolutely right. The richest 1% of this country are already paying over 85% of the taxes in this country. Yet, the Democrats feel they need to take more. Maybe if we properly educate our youth, and raise them to not have to rely on the government and provide for themselves, we wouldn't have to waste money on useless handouts that people growingly feel they are entitled to.

Jim, where'd you get those numbers? I know the general idea is right- but those seem extreme to me. I also wonder what the difference in the ratio of taxes paid to gross income is between the poor and wealthy.

i feel i haven't been screwed enough, in fact I haven't been screwed at all. i shudder at the thought of a president who has no experience other then 1 term in the senate and that one term has been spent campaigning for president.

As a disclaimer, I do not belong to either major party. If anything, i'd skew Republican. However, a lack of experience is a GOOD THING. He isn't as engrained into the machine as much as McCain is, and that to me is an asset. I can believe him when he says he wants change. I don't expect miracles, but we need to start SOMEWHERE.

When McCain said that if you put the comment in context and all you would see that he was saying that if it took 100 years to win the war then he would stay there that long but from reports coming out of Iraq from the last few months it won't take a 100 years its already doing better and meeting objectives laid out that had to be met for it to be a success.

I won't vote for McCain because he is OLD politics. We need things to change, we need someone with (hopefully) a new perspective, someone who hasn't already been totally corrupted by the older politicians. I believe Obama to be that person. Besides, McCain will just continue the downward trend of this country that Bush started almost eight years ago.

I don't believe in the same things Obama does, I don't align with Dems. Obama is too socialist for my taste. I don't support government run healthcare. I support school vouchers and not Obama's support from the teachers union. I support blatant capitalism and enjoy making lots of money and NOT being penalized for it by giving 40% of it to the government so they can give it to lazy poor people. I support McCain's foreign policy and not Obama's "Iran is a small country and not to be worried about".

@Barbara I also get the sense that you believe all poor people are lazy. That is ridiculous! I have friends that are extremely poor and are busting their ass to do whatever it takes to get by. There are more poor people who work hard then there are rich people who work hard.

Hi Mathew. I prefer being taxed fairly. If I choose to work hard and make alot of money, I should be able to retain what I have earned. That is what is great about this country. I should not be forced to give my hard earned money to the government. The US is not a socialist country so it is not up to the rich to support the non-rich. People choose the circumstances they are in, so if they are busting it and still poor maybe they need to evaluate and change fields or gain more skills.

Coming from the South originally, I've seen my fair share of welfare abuse. It was incredibly irritating for me working a full work week, trying to make ends meet, and being barely able to afford food while a family in the next checkout line with six screaming kids is buying pounds of steaks on food stamps. I still work for my money and I work smart and it's disheartening when people who don't work for their money (rather rich or poor) are living off of my salary.

When I hear Democratic candidates talk, all I ever hear about is the treatment of 'symptoms' rather than 'diseases'. Democratic politics always seem to be about the creation of temporary anodynes, providing the illusion of progress when really we're just slapping band-aids on mortal wounds. Tylenol just makes you feel better; it doesn't cure the tumor.

Yes I agree that there are many people that abuse the system. But, there are more people that the system really helps. And not all people are put into situations where they can succeed and can't help the bad situation they may be in. And saying that working hard is poor people is a load of crap. Because working smart is working hard, even if you are conning people you are still working hard to come up with ideas and then not getting caught.

It goes to education, the environment, roads, highways, bus systems, space exploration, research to help cure disease, etc. I should be one to complain right now as I'm paying for some of your retirements with the way the social security system works and I may not have anything when they time comes.

I will say that I don't agree with everything that Obama stands for. But, I feel a hell of a lot better about the future of this country under Obama then I do Bush. And as for Obama's wife's comment, I can see where she is coming from. Because as the past eight years have gone by I've become less and less proud of this country. And now that we have a chance to possible move in a better direction I'm starting to feel better about being an American.

I feel that it is absolutely amazing that anyone would elect for 4 more years of Republican misrule. I love this country a great deal, and know how fortunate I am to have grown up here, but the last 8 years have made me deeply troubled about our international arrogance, our weak financial situation, and the warmonger's path we have been walking under the rule of the worst President ever, George W. Bush. I believe in Barack Obama's intelligence and character, and am excited to support him.

Yes, Steve, I agree. But I am trying to be careful about it being a Republican vs. Democrat vs. independent thing. I know quite a few smart, experienced old-school Republicans who are supporting Obama. The Republican party was hijacked by a few dozen neocons. The Republican party under Bush abandoned all of its ideals, and many Republicans are finding more they like about Obama than they do about McCain.

Barbara: Obama's voting record and platform are pretty far from socialism. Unless, as someone noted above, you define socialism as "anything to the left of Reagan." But if you think Obama's a socialist, you wouldn't last six months in Canada, Europe, Japan, or pretty much any other "1st world" country. Obama's a centrist Democrat, and the Democrats are to the right of most Labor or Socialist parties in other countries.

I hate to say something like this, but anyone who says -- with regard to poverty in this country -- that "people make their own circumstances" or other such pablum, is living in a fantasy world. My wife's a social worker who deals with people who've really hit bottom every single day. Believe me, most of them didn't choose that situation, and the cards are very much stacked against them once they're there. Spare us the rhetoric about "how bad do you want it" and "laziness," and realize how lucky you are.

Can you cite some examples of the intelligence and character of Obama? I've seen him disown his pastor of 20 years as well as tell people to inflate their tires in response to the price of oil. He is a Jr level senator with limited experience in international and domestic affairs. It's like choosing a CEO for your company who doesn't have the right experience but you hire him anyway cause he seems like a great guy.

Obama is also supporting the "Global Poverty Act" which takes from the rich and gives to the poor but on a global scale. He wants to increase and dedicate .07% of the US GNP and give the money to the UN, an ineffective org, so they can take our money and redistribute it internationally to "fight poverty". Are you OK with your paycheck funding this? I am not.

Barbara: the tire gauge thing was a suggestion of one thing people could do right now to help save gas. And experts agree that it *would* save gas, more so than drilling for more oil (which wouldn't do anything in the short term). Plus, McCain's extensive experience in foreign affairs doesn't seem to amount to much beyond "pick a fight with anyone we don't like." (By the way, McCain said he didn't disagree with what Obama said about tire gauges.)

I ran Ubuntu for a while but have since switched to openSUSE. They are both excellent distros.

I've been using Hardy since beta on a Dell Optiplex. Just last week did they fix a bug to let my stock ATI card work in dual screen mode properly. Not Ubuntu's fault, because its ATI's closed driver, but these sorts of legal issues are stilting desktop growth. Other than that, though, Ubuntu has gone above and beyond any other OS I've used.

When it came time to upgrade to Hardy, I chose Linux Mint instead. So far I've been very pleased. Mint is an ubuntu derivative aimed at being a little more media friendly than ubuntu is out of the box. I may switch back to ubuntu at some point in the future, but for the moment I don't feel compelled to. http://linuxmint.com/

I'm using Ubuntu at work for 3 years now (without a need for Windows!). Rock solid. Only problem is my work using Exchange/Outlook. Evolution doesn't handle calendaring too well.

Good perspective. I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for a company with that much potential that doesn't even know who they are or what they do. I think that, before they do ANYTHING, they have to establish once again what Yahoo is. Right now, they're sounding like Microsoft when they were first trying to define what .Net was.

I do feel sorry a little bit, even if they didn't manage to do one thing right in the last few years, maybe because I followed them since almost day 1 and because once the MS bid was announced it was obvious that it's The End.

@Craig - I really don't think so. I mean, we all understand its implementation, but as for a definition? Not so much. The same is true for Yahoo. I know it's there, I know what it does...but it doesn't mean that I see any real value in it.

Agreed, Robert. I've got some friends working on very cool stuff whether it's startups, VC, or bigger roles at smaller companies. The Yahoos I worked with are smart, creative, talented professionals. We're going to see some great innovation coming from Yahoo alumni soon. P.S. Glad you like our idea ;)

Microsoft is a terrible business - we need a little sympathy for Yahoo. Slow extinction or being taken over by MS are hardly rich options. And it's hard to trigger the sense of crisis to fire your board.

Whether Microsoft gets Yahoo! or Yahoo! merges with someone else (read Time Warner or MySpace) it will be good for search in general and hopefully create an entity that can challenge Google in a meaningful way

I don't understand *why* Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo. Yahoo can't even figure out what they are. E-mail? Search engine? Social service? Not to mention the only thing that is lucrative is the search engine. The only way I can see someone benefit from buying Yahoo is if they completely re-vamp what Yahoo does, focus on one category and, market it!

yahoo jumped the shark when it started being proud of releasing of the YUI libraries. companies that start treating 'helper tools' as if they were new functionality are on the downward side of the curve.

@Mike, as a developer, the YUI libraries and developer tools are where the value of YHOO resides for me. I don't personally use any of their consumer products.

@Sprague D, question - does YUI increase your use of YHOO content/data? or do you use it primarily for your own content/data? my question is aimed at the monetary benefits accrued to YHOO from YUI. I see solid benefits from YHOO's work on Squid, but not YUI.

What kills me most about Yahoo is that they had so many of the most interesting and exciting places to go on the internet but then never fully realized that potential. I still can't believe that they paid Terry Semel more money than any CEO in the US in 2006 for such a miserable failure of a job. Pure stupidity. The board that oversaw that needs to go.
