"When a play goes up for review, all pieces of the play are reviewable from the snap to the final whistle, not just the piece in question (which would have been Gronkowski's possession of the football in this case). I think the differing factor is that it is a non-judgement call penalty. Illegal touching is pretty black and white as opposed to a holding penalty or pass interference, or any other call that us fans get frustrated about every week. For the second piece, I believe I heard the announcers say that the refs waved off the illegal contact penalty because Brady was out of the pocket. The ref threw the flag because he saw the illegal contact, but he wasn't watching Brady at the time to determine whether he was in the pocket or not. When the refs got together, they decided that there was no flag on the play for illegal contact. Does that clear anything up or is it all more confusing now? :P" - Aaron Garcia
howwedoit08 on How long can the NFL keep insisting that teams can't challege penalties, considering the horrible level of officiating this year? - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"IIRC once the referee steps under the hood, any part of the play is reviewable, not just the particular piece in question. I think that illegal touching is different from most other penalties (i.e. holding, pass interference, etc.) because it isn't a judgement call by the officials. It is cut and dry that the player stepped out and was the first to touch the ball. And to answer your question about why the other penalty didn't offset, the refs determined that Brady was out of the pocket when the illegal contact occurred, thus waving it off." - Aaron Garcia

"Eh, I think that everyone would agree that the Bills win over the Patriots, while exciting, was a fluke. You can't honestly sit there and tell me that if the Bills and Pats were to meet again this week, that you would pick the Bills to win. And for that reason, I think the Pats should be ahead of them still." - Aaron Garcia

"Of all the 3-0 teams, I really think that the Lions have been the least impressive. Not saying that they aren't a good team, but their wins have been against the Bucs (not very good), Chiefs (Piss-poor), and Vikings (Second Half Choke Artists). You can only play the games on your schedule, and they have won all of them, but until they play the Bears in week 5, they will have hardly had a test." - Aaron Garcia

">For supposedly being the best team in the AFC West, they have been incredibly underwhelming. Supposedly is the operative word in that sentence. The Raiders just aren't as sexy of a pick as the Chargers are - even if they are the better team. I really don't know if the fans and the media are ready for the Raiders to be really good. Even if they win in New England this week, everyone will be talking about what's wrong with the Pats and not about what's right with the Raiders. Of course none of that is fair, but as a Raiders fan, I'm sure you feel that way right?" - Aaron Garcia

"How do you feel about your SNF game against the Ravens this week? If the Jets D plays like it did against the Raiders, it could be a blowout. I have to think that Rex will turn things around, but what do you see as needing the most change based on what happened last week?" - Aaron Garcia

"I was only replying to your comment about the Pats. I totally agree with what you say about the Saints too. Their offense is really good, but the defense is nowhere near the chaos-maker it was a few years ago when the won the SB. That is really the element that is missing from the Saints. You're also right about them playing a soft schedule - although nobody thought so at the beginning of the year. The Falcons are way down and the Bucs aren't playing anywhere near what they showed us last year." - Aaron Garcia

"I hear what you're saying, but I don't have a problem with the Chargers that high. They can't help who they got their wins against, and their only loss came against a Pats team that was playing out of their mind. The Bills are 3-0, but one of their wins was against the Chiefs, and it took two meltdowns by the Raiders and Patriots to get their other two wins. No discredit to their heart and tenacity, but the Bills could just as easily be 1-2 as they are 3-0." - Aaron Garcia

"It took Brady's worst game and a last second field goal for the Bills to come away with a home win. Don't expect that to happen ever again. But with all that being said, the Patriot's defense is still suspect and Brady will have to play flawlessly for the Pats to win every shootout they get into. If these rankings were based on offense alone, then the Pats would be #1, but if it's a team ranking, then they belong about 5 or 6." - Aaron Garcia

"Browns logo should be Bengals, but other than that, I agree with everything you said. Texans shouldnt have dropped that far by losing to arguably the second best team in the league. Pittsburgh could have and should have lost that game last week - no way they are a top 10 team." - Aaron Garcia

"I think the article is perfectly clear. You start with a list of players drafted #1 overall and then whittle it down from there. You could draft an entire article on whether Hakeem over MJ was a good choice or not, but let's leave that for the suits in Washington :p" - Aaron Garcia

"I totally agree. Making statistical comparisons across eras is a slippery slope, although Baylors accomplishments are still amazing the NBA was a lot different back then. On that same note, it's not really fair to say that Iverson and Rose don't belong on this list because they weren't the first player of their kind. That's kind of like saying that unless you were the first band to pick up a guitar, you could never be as great as those who played one first." - Aaron Garcia
