Always keep in mind the science we learned in growing up....ie: how does a kite fly? ie: how does a parachute work? These ideas will help you realize that we are really at the mercy of the wind when we have three sides of our tent closed....where does the wind go? usually it tries to go through it and when it can't it pushes out or up. (the worst storms like Omaha...even a zippered up tent with wind from every direction, rain, two feet high water currents will have problems.)
- Christine Hauber
Here is the direct link to Clark's Omaha story: http://tr.im/lUw8 Thanks for sharing your troubles with us Clark and for discussing how you secure your tent. I have a very similar setup as yours: trimline, staybars, propanels, etc. I do attach my propanel legs to the staybar using a ball bungie but I am on the fence about securing the tops of the propanels to the tent. My thinking is...
- Matt Suess
We've used bungie cords to attach the propanels to the top and bottom of our tent. It anchored the walls and like Matt was thinking - gives it a little flexibility just in case. So far - we've been lucky. We haven't had the tent up in anything higher than about 20 mph winds and a few not too serious thunderstorms. I just hope I never have to find out how effective my weights and anchoring of thing are.
- Patty Hankins
Boy, I'm really on the ball. It only took 16 days before I noticed these comments. Thanks ya'll.
- Clark Crenshaw
Can anyone reccomend an HPLV spray system for spraying canvases? I'm selling enough canvases that it's time to look at an HPLV system rather than keeping with the spray cans we've been using. Thanks
Hi Patty. Did you mean HVLP? High Volume Low Pressure. I use an HVLP gravity fed spray gun I got for about $100 at Lowe's. It doesn't have a model # on it - but it is made by Kobalt. I have it hooked up to a 26 gallon air compressor I also got at Lowe's for $200 - $300. You'll need at least a 20 gallon air compressor - anything smaller and you will likely burn out the compressor.
- Matt Suess
Thanks. Yes I meant HVLP - I always get the initials wrong. High Pressure Low Volume would be a scary concept :-) Bill and I will probably head out to Lowe's this weekend and see what we can find. He's like to get the new system in place before we have to order more cans.
- Patty Hankins
An alternative is using a roller with a product like Breathing Color's Glamour II.
- James W. Parker
Have you had success using a roller? I tried for a couple months - never was pleased with quality on pieces larger than 16x24.
- Matt Suess
Am I the only one? Loving my time off the cirucit but ... antsy for another show. The art fair artist life is addictive. Next fix, 4th of July Breckenridge.
I usually get like that as well. Right now I am enjoying time off before I head to CA for a weekend show late June, then 6 straight weeks of shows in CO!
- Matt Suess
Me too. What I miss most about shows is seeing all of my artist friends. Since I'm doing some major refocusing of my work this year I've cut way back on shows. So I really look forward to each one. Next one is mid-June. And I try to get lots of other work done between shows. Right now, I'm working on my new website - hope to launch it in the next week or so
- Patty Hankins
I do miss the circuit when I am not on it. Now I am in the middle of the season. I am headed to my fifth of seven shows in a row. I am a bit tired but love seeing the artists and being around others who think like I do and understand what kind of life we have.
- Christine Hauber
A link to an interesting profile of Amy Amdur (Port Clinton, etc.) featured in Crain's Chicago Business. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin... a well rounded view of the art fair business from many points of view. Pointed to this article by artfairinsiders.com. Thanks Connie!
I've heard good things about Amy Amdur's shows. So far I've only done shows on the East Coast so haven't had a chance to see any of her shows in person
- Patty Hankins
I do, yes, but then I don't really use any Flickr photos for commercial purposes. I might only highlight them on Photografr, which gets them extra exposure.
- Raoul Pop
Can't you set permissions of who is allowed to blog your photos (i.e. who can see this button)? I personally used this button maybe twice on my own photos, but I just don't like how they end up on my site, so I usually just take the code from the "All sizes" and modify that a bit...
- Holger Eilhard
Yes, you can disallow the use of this button (hide) in your account settings. But default is On which might be confusing for some.
- Håkan Dahlström
But when you press Blog this, doesn´t the photo by default get linked back to Flickr ? So it may be copyrighted but you have linked back to the original source with all relevant info about the photographer. But it´s another matter if you incorporate a copyrighted photo into your website logo or header or something like that, or use it without attribution or linking back (not allowed). That´s why license and "blog this" settings are separate.
- Thomas Bøhm
No - if a photo isn't listed with a creative commons license or other indication it can be used - then people shouldn't use it. Ideally, people who don't want their photos used on other people's blogs should turn off the Blog this button - but just because someone didn't find the setting doesn't mean others should be allowed to use their photos without permission
- Patty Hankins
Patty: With the widely used and comprehensive Flickr API and feeds, people who don´t want their photos showing up at all on other sites than flickr have to make their photos "private" I guess. The "blog this" button is only a convenience function AFAICT.
- Thomas Bøhm
Thanks everyone! It's really not that big of deal...just a few 4x6 prints from a charity event. Still need a paying gig and perhaps a fine art print sale (which I'm not going to get till I make them available..ha!).
- Justin Korn
Congrats, it's good when you sell your first photograph. I've been lucky to sell a few and for some to use paid and used for various stuff like the Mastercard site.
- Kol Tregaskes
Nice one :D It's a great little feeling isn't it? Though, the closest I have come to it has been for schmap to choose a picture of mine from flickr, no paying interest so far ;P

Q: Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not? Sarah Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance. Umm... Sarah? The pledge wasn't written until 1892 (by a Christian SOCIALIST no less) and the words "under God" weren't added until 1954. On top of your mischaracterization of the First Amendment yesterday, I'm not so sure you'd pass the INS citizenship test, much less be qualified as a public official.
- Shawn Duffy
Palin's answers to several of those questions are frightening. I'm just hoping that after Tuesday, we don't ever have to even think about the possibility of having her as VP or worse - President

wordpress.com and blogger.com are quick to act on DMCA notices in my experience
- Phill Price
I was impressed with how quickly it came down - less than 7 hours from when I sent my email to when I noticed the photo was gone. The last time I filed a DMCA notice with blogger.com - they also acted quickly. Took the photo down in less than 8 hours. I just wish other sites responded so quickly!
- Patty Hankins
I am curious as to how much of your FF content you actually see/read and how much you miss in the stream of content from many followers. If you see this message, please comment and let me know 1) Did you find it on homepage, a user-defined list or browsing through my content only. 2) What page you found it on.
- Neill Adamson
Seeing this for the first time ever 13 hours after being posted on the first page after either Rah commented on it. That being said J Phil is also a friend and I see you as a friend of his.
- Carlos Ayala
7th on the homepage, subscribed to 90-odd people (some actually quite odd, now that I think about it).
- Michael C. Harris
To all the people who responded, many thanks for taking part. Interestingly I got more comments from people who are not subscribed to my feed than those who are. The power of Friend-of-a-friend is strong.
- Neill Adamson
What is everyone doing with their jpeg files after they've converted from RAW and then published online? I've been trashing them since I figured I'd need to resharpen and export again depending on the final output.
Keep them, that's what I use to upload to Flickr, Twitter, etc, etc.
- Kol Tregaskes
Like Kol - I use them for Flickr and my blog. Compared to the RAW files, and the edited TIFFs - they don't take up much space on the drives
- Patty Hankins
I tend to trash them eventually. It doesn't take much effort to pop into LR and re-export as I have almost everything automated.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I usually trash them, except I save everything I've ever uploaded to mpix.com , because I like to compare the prints to the screen versions, just to get a better feel for how things print.
- Brian Johns
I keep them. I like having smaller files to quickly display for people.
- Jordan Hofker
I keep them for quick printing as the wife is constantly updating photo albums. As a piggy-back...do you post full-size / resolution JPGs to flickr, etc. or lower-res / quality?
- JA Castillo
JA Castillo, I will usually upload 1024 or 800 max to Flickr, just to keep the file sizes down.
- RyanEs
@Ryan - thanks. I have taken to doing that as well.
- JA Castillo
I upload the full size ones to SmugMug - I don't bother holding onto them locally, I can always download them again if I need them, but usually I'd just re-export out of LR. To Flickr I stick with 800px long edge, mostly because I really dislike their (lack of) copyright enforcement.
- Eric P
After they are uploaded, I dump them. Exporting them again from Aperture is a snap, and I don't need yet more files hanging around.
- Jeremy Brooks
I am too lazy to do any post processing. While I have several pictures that were taken in RAW format, I have only actually used those RAW images a handful of times. Sometimes I will save the RAWs, but the JPGs are what I actually use. I was just contemplating deleting my RAW folder again the other day.
- Becca
Voted: 2 - originals and backups (both on site though). Trying to figure out where to take them off site and how. Looking forward to your series :)
- Justin Korn
WHS duplicates my entire photo folder on multiple hard disks. Smugmug holds an offsite copy of some of my images. I'm thinking of using Jungledisk or somthing for real offsite stuff, but can't decide.
- Roberto Bonini
The problem with cloud storage is that it doesn't scale. I have about 500 gb of photos plus assorted other files. It would take months to get them all online, and weeks to download them again should I need them. Currently I switch out an external hard drive once a week which I keep at my parents house... I try to keep it synced via VPN but the connection is too slow to keep up with my changes and new files.
- Eric P
4 - originals plus 3 backups. One backup is always off site.
- Patty Hankins
4 - original, rsync to local NAS, rsync to office network offsite, mozy.com
- Mark Anderson
I need to buy Lightroom ... PS CS3 too frickin pricey
- johnpiercy
"Memory leaks in the Library and Develop modules decreased Lightroom performance." Yes, truly! I have seen that kind of slowdowns too often even on fast computer with 8Gb of memory.
- Daniel Schildt
Glad they've got a solution to the memory leaks. On our computer LR has been an incredible memory hog.
- Patty Hankins
I've use LR since the original Beta. Memory has always been an issue. I do love it though.

We now own reusable shopping bags for carting home groceries. Between this and the Prius, I have to go strangle a bunny to get my planet-hating street cred back.
No Prius here, but I do get 32 mpg from my 99 Honda Civic. I also have the bags but no habit yet.
- Russellreno
I actually like our reusable grocery bags. They're handy for more than groceries. :) I like our Prius too.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
lol @ strangle a bunny. I get great gas mileage on my Yaris.
- DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
James, my sister has a hutch of bunnies if you'd like one, though I ask that you eat it if you dispatch it.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
LOL I bought some reusable bags a few months ago and have realized i just like them much more than plastic or paper. They hold a lot more. I can carry them easier with one on each shoulder if i have to. They're just more convenient all around.
- ·[▪_▪]·
You live with a hippie. Who cooks you food. Get over it. ;)
- Bran Mydwynter
Dude, don't let 'em fool ya, the prius has as much hate for the planet as any other car.
- Slappy Line
And don't let him fool *you*. He has the Prius because it looks like a spaceship.
- Bran Mydwynter
I bet lunch that he's Googled for "prius hacking" ;o)
- Paul Reynolds
Paul -- Er...yeah. But I decided to wait for the warranty to be up. ;) (I really want to attach one of my SNES consoles to the screen)
- James (@willia4)
I haven't had rabbit stew for a few years. I'll join you! I'm serious. I like the re-usable bags. Get everything in 3 or 4, and not a dozen or more of those silly plastic things.
- Ian May
+2 for Bran! LOL I've been resisting the urge to tweet that I'm making reusable produce bags, this week. I feel like such a geek.
- Heidi Jeffers Thibodeau
If I ate it, that would be a responsible use of resources and sort of go against the statement I'd be making. No, no. I'd have to kill it and then...throw it in the water supply or something. ;)
- James (@willia4)
@Tina No, I'e never had it fried. Had it done in red wine sauce, and my mother used to roast them, when my father got one from the guy along the street that kept them.
- Ian May
Keep it for a second body or keep it as a backup.
- Brian Johns
Keep it as a backup - and sell the old backup on Ebay :)
- Patty Hankins
I don't have a backup yet so I like the idea of keeping it, but I wonder if I would use it enough to justify not trying to sell it. For what it's worth, I will be looking to replace or complement my Canon XTi with a Canon 40D this Christmas.
- Becca
I don't need the backup often. But when my 5D had to go back to Canon for sensor cleaning - having the 20D on hand was great. Most of the time - I just keep the backup camera at home. When I'm on a trip - I always take it with me - just in case. I'd much rather carry it - and not need it than need it and not have it with me
- Patty Hankins
Until now I have just passed them on to someone else, but when it's time to replace my 5D, I expect to keep it around as a backup.
- Michael Hocter
I guess I prefer to shoot at the extremes. I either want the most zoom I can get or the fisheye effect. Sometimes there isn't enough time to switch and sometimes the environment just won't allow for it. So, I wonder if it's practical to have a setup with each or if just miss some shots. That could always give you a reason to go back later!
