Cuill Launches Next Week? (Marksonland) - http://www.marksonland.com/2008...
"So what happens next week? Presumably this is a not-so-subtle reference that highly anticipated new search start-up Cuill will be launching. I saw Louis Monier from Cuill speak a few months ago and he was hammering home to the audience the fact that Cuill will have the most comprehensive index when they launch. From what I hear, their index already exceeds 100 billion pages. We've been waiting for their launch and can't wait to check out their product" - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
My curiosity about Cuill grows every time I check my server logs. - Bruce Lewis
In order to differentiate themselves from Google, I think they should open up and provide search APIs without daily rate limit. - seman
interesting... waiting for this startup to come out for a long time. great time to be a competitive search startup for the next two years as MS/Google will buy you either for tech/people/both. - Krishna Gade
The one should be really interesting... - Bindu Reddy
Especially with ex-Googlers amongst them... but I only have 4 hits from their web spider, I feel unappreciated - Justin Long
my wife wants to know why in the world we need another search index when we already have google. why should she switch? - Justin Long
I don't know why we needed Google when we already had Altavista. - Amit Patel
Paul - This is really interesting and will be to watch develop. I've been following Cuill for sometime and read the live blogging of Monier's presentation. For those that are new to Cuill (or haven't noticed the bot come by), some details are here http://www.cuill.com/. Take note of the current staff's background. - Charlie Anzman
@Justin Most people were satisfied with pre-Google search engines until they saw Google. - seman
It's true, but Google represented a significant difference not just in index comprehensiveness but also in page recommendation algorithm. In other words, google wasn't just "more" of Alta Vista or others - it was "different." It was "better." To break past that, what will Cuill have to be? - Justin Long
Justin: I didn't think that Google provided better searches than HotBot. What won me over was the Google "cache" of pages (1) currently unavailable (2) or changed since the last crawl. - Mitchell Tsai
Perhaps he means the next model of Tesla, that arrives in 2010. The sedan. - Akshay Dodeja
Google's index was smaller than the competition when Google was small. But Google's quality was better. I'm keen to see how Cuill does on the quality front. - Daniel Dulitz
I don't know anything about them, but it seems really unlikely to me that Cuill will go head-to-head with Google as a consumer search engine. - ⓞnor
I wonder why they chose a name that most people will not have the slightest idea how to pronounce. In any case, any search engine that intends to knock Google from the throne will have to be radically better than Google -- Google's momentum and intertia are huge. Just being somewhat better won't do the trick. - Sean McBride
I'm eager to see what Cuill quality and user experience look like. Some credible competition on those two measures would be a good thing for search. I'm just hoping that the coming competition doesn't boil down to a "my index is bigger than yours" ping pong match... - Kevin Scott
Most people want less information and better information, not more information. We're drowning in information. New recommender algorithms that produce significantly better and more relevant search results would catch my eye. - Sean McBride
I'm looking forward to seeing how the Cuill guys solve the problems of search at scale as well as the problem that their name is going to be too hard to spell for most people. Personally I hope they don't sell out but instead build a company that makes money and endures. - Adewale Oshineye
My guess is that if ever Cuill launches publicly as a consumer search engine they are going to change their name... I actually think they are building a search engine which they can shop around to MSFT/YHOO or even GOOG. The fact that the YHOO acq. fell through is prob. a good thing for them. - Bindu Reddy
Looks like search is live at http://cuil.com - Marc Chung
Marc - my first impressions are positive. It grabbed me from the first search. I am going to play with this. - Sean McBride
cuill what? it's a 15 seconds of fame. after that fade into memory. even bookmarking it is laborious for my finger. - huixing
I tried it out for two searches. It seems neat, but my brain does not immediately understand how to interpret the results, especially if I wanted to know more than the splash page. Neat though. - Clare Dibble
Interesting, I tried searching for "latex two column layout", which on Google, pulls up one of my blog posts as the fourth hit. On cuill, it didn't find anything. I also tried searching for "Robert Felty", and it did not pull up my website, but rather comments I have left in Friendfeed, some news groups, some colleagues' websites, and alumni pages from where I went to school. So far, I like Google's results better. - Robert Felty
If it doesn't find your search results, Rob, try turning Safe Search off. Maybe your blog is considered porn because of all the "orifice" talk. - Gabe
