PrimeLife - Privacy and Identity Management in Europe for Life
"Individuals in the Information Society want to protect their autonomy and retain control over personal information, irrespective of their activities. Information technologies hardly consider those requirements, thereby putting the privacy of the citizen at risk. Today, the increasingly collaborative character of the Internet enables anyone to compose service and contribute and distribute information. Individuals will contribute throughout their life leaving a life long trail of personal data." - paula simoes ☃ via Bookmarklet

"PrimeLife will ensure that the community at large adopts privacy technologies. To this effect PrimeLife will work with the relevant Open Source communities and standardisation bodies, and partner projects. It will further organise workshops with interested parties such as partner projects to transfer technologies and concepts. This will also validate the project’s results on a large scale. European industry will be strengthened by providing building blocks for trustworthy treatment of customer’s data." - Marcos Marado

He was a man of idioms and idiosyncrasies, deeply intelligent and a soothsayer. He had prescient knowledge of the Internet. Although educated in literature, Marshall McLuhan was known as a pop philosopher because his theories applied to mini-skirts and the twist. For his ability to keep up with the cutting edge, one colleague called him - paula simoes ☃

- paula simoes ☃ via Bookmarklet

"Google proposed to serve up its search results in the same manner as it serves up any other Web results, by providing a snippet of text and a reference to the original book, along with information on buying it, should it happen to be in print. What's not to like? Well, plenty, if you're the Authors Guild. They brought a class-action lawsuit against Google alleging that making an intermediate copy of a copyrighted book (a scan) was a copyright infringement (they also suggested that serving up a search result was a similar infringement). This is a pretty dumb legal theory. If it’s true, then every search engine is a massive copyright infringer, because the intermediate copies they make of billions of Web pages (just as likely to be copyrighted as the books in the library) are not substantially different from copies of books. Further, the search results are not particularly different (from a copyright perspective) from search results comprised of snippets from Web pages. The Authors... more... - paula simoes ☃ via Bookmarklet
