The Nokia 5800 Xpress Music revisited - http://pauljacobson.org/2009...
The first thing I did when receiving it was to connect it to my MacBook and synchronise it with my Contacts and Calendars. The 5800 doesn't come with out of the box compatibility so I first had to download an install an iSync plugin from the Nokia site (http://europe.nokia.com/get-sup...). Installing the plugin took a few seconds and iSync had no difficulty adding the phone to my profile and syncing it. - Paul Jacobson
The mobile Gmail app doesn't work very well on the 5800 Xpress so I instead installed Nokia Email for the 5th edition: http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas.... It is a good idea to follow the instructions because you don't install the application using the usual method. The application installs and runs quite nicely. It takes a little getting used to the onscreen keyboards and I found using my fingers was probably the easiest. - Paul Jacobson
A full screen touchscreen makes a big difference to a number of tasks like web browsing and media consumption (particularly video) but I do miss a physical keypad when I am doing text intensive tasks like messaging or even logging into services and applications. The onscreen keyboards (there are a couple options available) work well enough but they aren't as easy to use or as satisfying as a physical keyboard. This is one of the reasons I think the upcoming N97 will work well for me. - Paul Jacobson
The Symbian OS (S60 5th Edition in the case of the 5800 Xpress) isn't very difficult to use but I keep thinking how difficult it is to navigate compared to the iPhone OS. As much as I grumble about the iPhone's inadequate hardware, the iPhone's OS is superior to anything currently available, certainly including the Symbian OS as it is implemented on devices like the 5800. - Paul Jacobson
Scrolling on the touchscreen isn't nearly as smooth as the iPhone although you can scroll pretty quickly if you drag the scrollbar on the right of the screen. - Paul Jacobson
I am getting used to the touchscreen keyboard. It is getting easier to type on it holding the phone in landscape orientation and typing with my thumbs. I seem to remember having difficulties with the iPod Touch the first day or so too. The keyboard is pretty responsive although there are a couple little things that bug me. Some apps like messaging don't bring up an onscreen keyboard automatically so I still have to tap in the text field to open it. - Paul Jacobson
The 5800 is pretty slim. It is about the same size as a N73. The screen is just a little too narrow for a satisfactory Web browsing experience. - Paul Jacobson from fftogo
@Paul You do realize you can turn it to get a larger width right? - Sloan Bowman
Hi Sloan, I figured that out, thanks. :-) What I am getting at is that the device is just a little too narrow for me to have a satisfying browsing experience after using my wife's iPod Touch on and off. - Paul Jacobson
Paul, yes compared to the iPhone/iTouch the browser is just not the same at this moment. A new browser called O3 has been released which drastically improves performance on Symbian devices. Sadly not working properly on the 5800XM yet. Should very soon though. We are hoping Nokia puts more effort into their browser in the near future. - Sloan Bowman
The Nokia browser is a WebKit browser as far as I know so it has a pretty decent foundation. - Paul Jacobson
