"That everyone on Facebook has to use their real name (and Facebook will root out and disable accounts with pseudonyms), there’s a higher degree of accountability because legitimate users are forced to reveal who they are offline. No more “funnybunny345″ or “daveman692″ creeping around and leaving harassing wall posts on your profile; you know exactly who left the comment because their... more... - Meryn Stol
Give me real names any time. For me the "accountability" part weighs in heavy. I know that all my writing is "on the record" here, and I like that. - Meryn Stol
I said this before: One of the things I like of FriendFeed is that so much people use their full name here. Also, it's so big improvement over that @username crap on Twitter. Communication here looks both "personal" and "professional". - Meryn Stol
Armageddon upon us, I agree with Meryn 100% - Matthew DeVries
"Durable identity" is a key phrase from the above quotation. With continuity people begin to identify with their pseudonyms and take responsibility for them, especially within communities where they become known. - Rebecca
"With continuity people begin to identify with their pseudonyms and take responsibility for them, especially within communities where they become known." It's the only way to develop a reputation... - Meryn Stol
Mohomed, I think it mostly ensures they will be relatively polite. And I can do without the smart but "anonymous" commenters. It's not that there's a lack of smart people on the web. :) - Meryn Stol
Mohomed, except for situations where someone is in danger for expressing day-to-day opinions I consider this practice very weird - troubling even. I just don't understand it. I asked a question on FF some days ago about this... The answers kind of confirmed the "weirdness" of the reasons for not using a full name. People calling up "privacy" as an argument... What are they afraid for? - Meryn Stol
- This may say more about me than others, but I can't help the feeling. Why can't we all talk in full daylight? - Meryn Stol
Not forgetting that it is a fundamental human right - the right to pseudonym. There should be the flexibility to allow those of us who wish to use one or those who see their pseudonym as their name more than the one society deems "real name". - alphaxion
"What are they afraid of?" Google search for a start. - Rebecca
There is a fundamental shift in the role of internet and how its perceived in society. This has culminated in Second Life becoming defunct. - Jim
Rebecca, "Google search" - and then? I know all what I say can be googled. Why would that bother me? - Meryn Stol
I don't fear anything, this is my name. The one I wish people to identify with as me. It is more real to me than the name my parents gave me. Why is this such a bad thing? - alphaxion
@mohomed Oh I know this all too well - I've seen the technology, it scares the crap out of me. - alphaxion
Meryn, some possibilities: if you knew a mentally unstable person in real life who might harass you; if you were in the process of a divorce and didn't want your ex-to-be to follow you everywhere. I could think of plenty of other reasons. Some irrational reasons, too. :) - Rebecca
Tamar, It is a sad fact that many people, even in the US, would suffer various forms of harm if they were 'outed'. I've seen people lose their jobs over expressing a political opinion, families shattered due to religious expression, and so on. It wasn't that long ago that 'fired for blogging' stories were popping up every month or so. We don't see that as much anymore because more people use pseudonyms now. - Michael R. Bernstein
There are tons of Smiths and Singhs and Mohammeds in the world, so requiring real names isn't sustainable practice, but even beyond that, it's not about names, it's about identity. Google my username, then google my real name(William Gunn). Which one is more strongly my identity? I argue for OpenID, a URL, as an identity token that's more functional than a name. - Mr. Gunn
Not only is my name not a URL, if facebook tried to make it one, I'd delete my account on the spot. - Karoli from BuddyFeed
I quite like the idea of my name being a URL. A resource on the web :). But seriously, it's not an easy generalization. For example, on LinkedIn, I chose to use a handle more related to my name as opposed to everywhere else. In addition to many of the things being mentioned above the idea of online handles are a time honored tradition of the web, even if you fully know whom you are referring to. Personally I miss Chris being factoryjoe. - Deepak Singh
"My name is Earl." - Bill Sodeman from Nambu
I just try to make sure people know that "gotgenes" is really "Chris Lasher". "gotgenes" has fewer characters, and while "Chris Lasher" is a rare name, it's still not unique. I managed to bury the other Chris Lashers in the world on Google search, but what if your name is really, really common? An alternative, unique monitor might actually help. I probably say a few things online I might bite my tongue on in real encounters, but no more when you see "gotgenes" rather than "Chris Lasher". - Chris Lasher
A cousin of mine had a name that was also the name of someone else (on Usenet) who was very controversial and he got tired of being mistaken for him. Let's say that name was "John Smith" (they had different middle initials). For a while he tried establishing an identity as "The Other John Smith", but then adopted a nom-de-net. Eventually, he came to feel that handle was his real name, so he had it legally changed. - Michael R. Bernstein
vlb is me. I am vlb. If you don't know me well, why should that be any less my identity than "Vicki Brown"? They're just letters on a page. If you do know me, I've been using vlb whenever possible since 1983. As long as I've been on the net, I've been vlb. The only person with the right to chose my identity is me. It is NOT an option for anyone to tell me that I must choose some other combination of letters. - Vicki Brown

My Tribute to the hard working crew at 30DC! Thank you Dan, Ed, Bob and the whole team that has helped change my look on internet marketing! I owe you! (Get the full size wallpaper for free by following this link) - http://www.Traffic-Bug.com

Thank you again Ed, Dan, Bob and entire crew over there at the 30 Day Challenge...I can't thank you enough. I hope this makes you laugh a bit so I can give back to you in my own way. - Michael Roberts
Hope everyone noticed the many subtle hints in the wallpaper. We even modeled the guitar after the one Ed Dale auctioned off....and Frank Kerns Helmet cracks me up! If you have ever seen one of his seminars you will understand why he is wearing it. - TrafficBug
Who design the wallpaper? Very creative. - Buff Toast
Thank you very much Buff! :) I designed it....It took me about 12 days to complete. Had to pay a lot of attention to detail...With Ed Dales iPhone utility belt and guitar to Guru Bobs "philosophy shirt." I just hope all the 30dc people enjoy it. This has been a great community and I have learned so much from everyone and the 30dc staff! - Michael Roberts
Michael, you create the product Traffic Bug, design and did the artwork, and the marketing. That's a lot of work and know-how, requiring many different set of skills. Along the way, 30DC training was significant. Would you like to share a little about your IM journey and the training programs that you find has helped you become a all-round internet marketer? - Buff Toast
Thanks Buff Toast for the interest! :) I will post a little snipit on another thread...And I will also be releasing about a 50 page ebook on the internet's best tools and internet marketing tactics that I find to work the best... I will be sure to post the link in this room so you can get a copy for free. - Michael Roberts
The wallpaper looks great Michael - I've downloaded it and keep on noticing extra little details. If the attention to detail in Traffic Bug is as good then we are in for a real IM treat. Good work - David
hey it's great, thanks Michael glad it's going so well :)) - Tash
Thank you everyone for all your great feed back and emails! Over 70 people downloaded that wallpaper! I almost fell of my chair! Thanks again 30DC community and crew! - Michael Roberts

I Have A Question For All Users Of This Room !!
There is a wealth of information and helpful suggestions in this room. I would like to propose we start using a Hash(#) tagging in titles now that you can also edit titles. The reason is to make the room more searchable for all the great stuff here. Take a look at the APPS room http://friendfeed.com/rooms... at how they are doing it. I would like to keep it to 4or 5 tags only. What do you think? Tag suggestions? - Ron"micronet"Harwood
We could maybe get ED to put the ones we decide on in the header for everyone to use/follow - Ron"micronet"Harwood
Still thinking about the tags - excellent idea, thanks Ron :-) - Kim Baillie
Like your idea. Tags base on the 4 part of symphony. #market research, #traffic, #conversion, #product ... some o/r #seo, #web. - Buff Toast
@Buff I think that those Tags would be "spot on". I would shorten the first one though to be just #research. It just keeps adding one to a title short and sweet, But the room seems pretty slow or just no interest in this so far. We'll have to give it awhile and see :) It would just make doing a search for something sooo much easier.☼ So What do you say peeps? Yes? No? To much work, It sucks? - Ron"micronet"Harwood
@Ron, I am sure peeps will want tis. They could be thinking of tags ... or else, could it be they don't understand the Hash# concept? And I agree to keeping tags short. - Buff Toast
@Ron, how about tagging a thread of yours in this room as a demo? - Buff Toast
Here is an example of it in use http://friendfeed.com/e... - Ron"micronet"Harwood
If u r unsure of how it works, read the little para on Hash Tag. Tag and search concept can be applied in tis room too. http://resources.pathable.com/twitter... - Buff Toast
The way it works is pretty basic. Say you want to search this room for SEO related threads. You would put #seo in the search bar and all the titles that anyone tagged with #seo would be returned in the results. The reason this is helpful is because ppl use different terms to refer to the same subject which can make it harder to find what you may be looking for. Thus the reason for Hash tags # - Ron"micronet"Harwood
Excellent love it anyone new (or restarting) could then easily find all the info they require on a certain topic by using the # tag, before they become overwhelmed or tempted to give up - really great question thanks Ron. - Groobers
It would defiantly facilitate searching. Being this room is centered around the 30DC and to keep it relevant to marketing, the tags @Buff Toast suggested seem appropriate e.g. #research, #traffic, #conversion, #product #seo #web. I would suggest to keep it to 6 or 7 tags so it doesn't become to confusing. I am open for more suggestions though. - Ron"micronet"Harwood
#blog, #tool(eg flock, twhirl, Frienddeck) - Buff Toast
Thanks Buff I'll add them to the list :) - Ron"micronet"Harwood
How about interesting news and update links? #news ? - Art Y.

Wonderful. Very good news. Is this the clothing niche which you made the sale? How long did it take to be #3 & #5? - Buff Toast
Yes it is BuffToast. I only realised why I wasn't ranking well within the last couple of weeks (see the forum thread which you contributed to http://short.to/kfj I'm Isha in the thread) It took 2 blog posts to put it right. & there I was for months wondering why things weren't happening for me. Judging by my Google Analytics people were finding me via google search on my keyword within a week of the 2nd blog post on my keyword. But for months before that I'd created other posts & socially bookmarked them. - Isha (Marysia)
It's getting embarrassing. In phrase match I now see that I also have a blog post at #4, my squidoo lens at #6, my Digg for my squidoo at #8, my weebly at #11, propellor page to a now defunct blogpost link at #12, dignova for my latest blog post at #14, and 2 more of mine on the 3rd page. I'm nearly crying in happiness!! - Isha (Marysia)
In broad match, in addition to the #5, there are 2 of mine on page 2 and 2 on page 3. When I use "All countries an territories" in Market Sam, I'm at #4 and #5 for broad match :D - Isha (Marysia)
How much better can it get - Market Sam has me at #2 and #3 for broad match for google UK (I have a .co.uk domain as that's where most of the searches are). - Isha (Marysia)
Wow getting better and better. Glad to hear the progress. - Buff Toast

I have created two blogs during the 30DC. Now, for a third niche, my idea is to create a regular website, not a blog. What is the best and easiest way to create a regular website? I have my own domain. Any suggestion?
You couldn't have asked at a better time. Here is what I suggest. I use them and they provide all the tools that you have to get separately with 30DC. Keyword research tools, auto responders, e-newletters, easy site building tools, rss feeds, socialize buttons and more! Here is the link to a special of buy one get one free ends Christmas. I seem to be at exactly the same point as you, I've tried a couple of blogs which haven't done great so I am going for something a little more meaty. I got the business hosting package from Hostgator. I've tried Kompozer, MS Expressions and Dreamweaver. At the moment I am torn between Kompozer and Expressions. Dreamweaver is beautiful but really overkill for me atm. - Kittie Walker

I use Wordpress, even if for sites without a blog. Excellent SEO, flexibility, lots of functionality built in and easy to include an RSS feed if you decide to have any sort of upadated content anywhere on your site. The off the shelf sites you can get are a little less individual and in myopinion don;t give you the opportunity to really stand out.as much as you could with your own website. Wordpress can be made to look nothing like a typical wordpress site. - Rob Cooke
I agree with Rob on Word Press. It can be made to look indistinguishable from Word Press. WP seo's just like a website, easier to maintain without needing to do HTML (CSS, Javascript) surgery. I do not know your niche, but for most niche's your customers won't even care. Some people have also used Drupal and Joomla. - Frank Dobner
When we first started out some years ago we used Website Wizard which did everything we needed at the time. It took about 12 months to outgrow them and now we use a combination of Web Page Maker, Joomla and WordPress depending on site content. - Kim Baillie
I am a bit of a WP fanatic myself, so I am biased, but I do think it is excellent. I'm talking about WP self hosted (not WP.com). If it wasn't for that I don't know when I would have got started building my first site. - Rob Cooke
I like http://www.weebly.com/ - you can create a website for FREE!!!!! You can also get a domain (although it does have 'a .weebly' part on the end of it) and they host it for you. Hope this helps. - Enzo Vullo

I really believe in the power of wordpress, but customizing WP is not that easy. - Soheyl
Yes. WP has a long way to go to educate its customer base on customizing their blogs/web code. They have documents upon documents that could create full time job to learn their stuff. I hope that they consider putting their stuff on video for simplifying the education. There is a niche for someone here to produce effective video training to utilize WP fully for us boneheads. - Frank Dobner
Great idea Frank. Yes, a very great niche for the experts out there: Video tutorials on advanced aspects of WP. It can also be a topic for discussion during 30DC Plus. - Soheyl

It does take some creativity to keep it running at top performance. I use sessions and try not to leave tabs that I don't use open for long. Memory leaks have been a problem with firefox for long, and flock doesn't do much better either - Jorge Blanco

"Obama has also sought out a team that is more highly educated than any in recent years. No less than 19 of the 21 have graduate degrees. Four have PhDs (Stephen Chu, Robert Gates, Susan Rice and Peter Orszag,; if Larry Summers is at the table, that would make five). Seven were educated in the Ivy League. And one, of course, has a Nobel prize in science – a first for a presidential cabinet (Chu in physics)." - Atul Arora from Bookmarklet
I'm not sure the degrees and universities matter as much as what those people have done since they got them. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
very promising - adolfo foronda
Agree, degrees don't mean anything. Bush's cabinet had degrees too (except usually only Law degrees), the difference is in that Obama's cabinet has degrees and experience in the fields they've been designated. For example, Chu got his Nobel Prize, whereas Bush's Energy guy was a COO at Fidelity Mutual Funds. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ) - Will Higgins™
Another good example is Bush's Sec. of Housing - another Banker/CFO, whereas Obama's got Shaun Donovan who's been NYC's housing comish and also worked for Clinton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Will Higgins™
I'm not a big fan of Hilary but at least she's only Sec. of State and doesn't actually have any responsibility (o noes, flamebait). I still think B.Rich woulda been good at S.State. or maybe even Colin again. - Will Higgins™

One of my common blogging themes, repeated often over the last few years, is based upon a couple of verses in James, Chapter 4 that also have secular relevance. In effect, the verses say that you are never definitely able to say that "I will be doing this tomorrow" or "I will be here next week" because all sorts of things could take place in the interim.
