The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

neternity@gmail.com and i promise to send a wave of 100,901 twitter followers to your doorstep each of whom will have averaged 1 tweet in their existence - this might not get me an invite but surely it will get some notice - must have that something special - my google wave invite special sauce ingredient is twitter juice PS Not to be construed as an offer, not valid in any of the 53 US states, do not try this at home, caution: contents are hot.
- Ross Button

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.
- marziah
I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

And months back, someone confirmed that my friendfeedTranslate http://translatorize.com script dutifully translated all 6000, comment by comment right in the page. That's a lot of ajax/javascript going on, but it worked.
- Micah Wittman
Trader Joe's has a really good one, too. Although I think the Pomegranate fizzy water is even better.

Will do joey, I visit Whole foods once a month to get my grains and veggies, and some seafood...Love whole foods, but I do my other 3 weeks at A&P with my coupons...

"Arora is a free, cross-platform web browser built on WebKit (the engine that powers Safari and Chrome) that we've mentioned once before, but its latest release includes some interesting new features by default, including built-in support for ad blocking. Once you've installed Arora, switching on Ad Block is as simple as going to Tools > Ad Block and then ticking the Enable AdBlock checkbox. (It blocks ads using built-in subscription lists.)"
- LANjackal

This is great. Web publications are already struggling to monetize their content and pay writers to keep producing quality work. Now that we can block ads, we can finally drive these assholes into the ground.
- David Chartier
why not? noone is ashamed of going to the toilet during tv-ads, why is everyone ashamed of blocking anoying js/flash-content? dont tell me its because all these poor bastards out there, trying to get something out of horrible amounts of work. if the ads are anoying, they will be blocked.. if they are not, noone would make the effort to do so
- Frank
I don't block ads because I wanna destroy a site's biz. I block ads because they're intrusive and consume my system resources to render, especially Flash ads. In any case, the vast majority of users actually don't block them ABP isn't exactly installed on every single machine out there
- LANjackal
from IM
There's also the case of many ads being vectors for malicious codes.

"The days of building your precious DVD collection may be coming to an end sooner than you think. If Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' comments are any guide, the DVD era may be set to come to a rather abrupt halt. Specifically, Hastings said in an interview with The Motley Fool website (digested here) that DVD will only be the "primary delivery format" at the company for the next two years, though he did add that it would stick around in some fashion for the next decade or two. That's a huge pull back from Hastings' previous prognostication; the Netflix boss had formerly predicted DVD would remain the company's primary format until as late as 2018."

I like it: no more ugly cases, smudged disks, packs of advertising included with every purchase, etc etc etc
- Chris Rogers
I dislike this idea cause I'm in the Navy, which means I won't get DVDs when the ship I'm on is out at sea.
- Colide81 (James)
from iPhone
You don't have internet on the ship?
- Paul Whitaker
Yes we have Internet on the ship I'm on, however it's only for important transfer of data. And the Internet I do have access to is very slow, much slower then the connection to transfer the important data.
- Colide81 (James)

Something useful! I went for monogrammed shot glasses and got some positive feedback months later. Things like "yeah I used it" and "that totally broke".
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Again, one of them doesn't drink.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Yeah, thought of that, Matthew.
- Alex Scoble

The problem with a Leatherman, engraved pocket knife, etc is if a groomsman forgets to put it in his checked luggage and he's at the airport and would like to actually fly home. I'm not speaking from experience or anything, no sir-ee.
- Micah Wittman
Yep, that is the problem with any bladed implement.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
No, they don't all have to get the same thing, just have to all be the same value.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I gave out nice wallets to my groomsmen - it's something every guy uses on a near daily basis, and the kind of thing most guys don't think to go and buy unless their current wallet is torn up. They were all very appreciative of them.
- Nathan Chase
I'm obviously not a groomsman but best gift R ever got was a swiss army knife, engraved. Nowadays too much of a problem. More useful than flasks, mugs, pens etc. But to me the best gift would probably be a photo... i.e. get your photographer to take a good solo portrait of each and give them a print or even the file - most people have so few good pro photos :D
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Nice try, but those steaks are $90 not $75
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Alex, the same company that has a beer of the month has wine, cheese, and cigars, I think. (If he smokes but doesn't drink, or something :-) )
- Jordan Hofker
Akiva bought his guys shoes (they all wore Chucks in the wedding so he bought those for them) plus an engraved flask. A friend bough his guys all a Dremel, which I thought was cool.
- Rochelle
One of the groomsmen already has a funky fresh wallet and wouldn't use one that I bought him.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I like gift certificates - then they can all get what they want. They are all into electronics right?
- Joe
Hehe, we most certainly will not be wearing Chucks at the wedding.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Dont' get Alex going about gift cards :D
- Micah Wittman
Yes, they are all in to electronics. Amazon gift cards would certainly work.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
what about some kind of folding chair, maybe with an embroidered name on it?
- Paul Whitaker
Oh and steaks also would not work, because the best man is a vegetarian.
- Alex Scoble
Well, I was more going for the theme with the steaks Alex, you'd find a $75.00 on the site, and they have fish packs as well. They may deal with you since you're getting like 5 packages.
- Matthew DeVries
I have gotten, from various weddings I have been in, an engraved Zippo, flask, decanter and glasses, USB Swiss Arm Knife, and Bar Set (shaker, tools). Loved them all
- Alex Scrivener
Matthew's link has mini breathalyzers for under $70.
- Joe
something with the date, time, and name of the bride and groom engraved on it
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
Money clip? Tie clasp? Used to be lighters for the men, compacts for the women, but nobody uses them anymore. Nor ties, cufflinks...jeez. I still like silver engraved pocket knives.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Most of the gifts I have gotten for standing up in weddings went in a drawer and were rarely looked at again.
- Joe
All good: Pocket knife, leatherman, nail clipping set/grooming kit, money clip, beer stein, flask, USB humping dog, Elvis lamp
- Rodfather
pocket knives, like small ones from swiss army
- Keith - @tsudo
i gave my groomsmen an engraved leatherman multitool
- Imabug
Please tell me your shirt for the wedding has french cuffs, Alex! But seriously, check out the Jack Black stuff. It is really nice... I steal Tad's daily moisturizer. Also, a shaving brush is something a lot of guys wouldn't think to get for themselves (of quality at least) but is a great staple.
- Lindsay
It's a tux shirt, it has whatever cuffs it has. And we call them freedom cuffs around here. :)

A 52" HDTV would be nice. Surround sound, too, since it would be rude to give the gift of an HDTV without Surround Sound. Just sayin'...

I second that 52" Jason mentions. =)

from IM
Alex, are you getting your best man/maid of honor something different from the rest of the party?
- Beau Liening
Alex, are you sure each of these guys doesn't just want a hug and a pat on the back. No engraving or expiring gift card issues to worry about :D
- Micah Wittman
Seriously, though. What about gift certificates for a weekend of golf or something?
- Jason Huebel
Binoculars, engraved money clip, business card case, zippo lighter or swiss army knife, sports jerseys of favourite teams, digital photo frame, stainless steel grill set... I’d be tickled with any of these.
- Ken Morley
Maybe you can find something cool and custom on Etsy?

Almost every item that has been mentioned is handled by my friend's gift store at http://tinyurl.com/groomsm... because he has over 6,000 individual products including very unique cufflinks and all the usual glassware most groomsmen stores sell. He also has official sports logo stuff and some really cool things that have nothing to do with groomsmen but I think they're neat like...

A number of Download Squad readers have been echoing the same sentiment in recent posts about Google's browser: as soon as LastPass is available, we're leaving Firefox for good. Well, gang, grab your parachutes, it's time to bail! The LastPass crew has released an alpha version of their Google Chrome extension, and it rocks. Check out the screens after the break!
