but I heard the cost of all that was major power consumption, even at rest - Chris Kim A
LittleBigPlanet looks amazing. Maybe Sony has some hope after all. - James Mowery
Eh, I'm concerned that we're talking about an unreleased game in terms of "how many awards it's already won". They hype machine was criticized last year for games like assassin's creed, etc. When it comes out if there is a noticeable difference, ok, but till then I haven't seen anything from Dead Space that trumps games already out on 360 & PS3 - Richard Lawler via twhirl
LBP looks awesome tho, it's the reason I bought a PS3...and the reason it's been gathering dust becuase I'm watinig for LBP and Wipeout HD to come out - Richard Lawler via twhirl
Anyone who want to tell their PSN-names? Mine is kermit_swe. Add me if you want to play with a Swede :) - Peter
Of course the PS3 looks better. No one is doubting it is a more powerful system. The problem is, it doesn't have anywhere near as many good games as the 360 or as good of an Online system as Xbox Live. - Adam Teece via twhirl
Yes, but how does the PS3 work with Windows Media Center? That's the main reason I own an Xbox 360 at all. - Jesse Stay
Content is king, all hail the Wii. And whilst Xbox 360 users get on with playing games, PS3 users sit around waiting for games to appear. - Dukeswharf via twhirl
The Wii has very little quality content actually. The 360 still has the most "must have" games and there's no evidence that this will change anytime soon. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
There are less than 10 games worth getting for the Wii...Maybe 20...The 360 has at least 50 games that are worth buying. Only reason the Wii has sold so well so far is a blend of marketing, controller paradigm shift and price of the console. 360 still leads in attach rate though. More people buy more stuff for the 360 than the other 2 next gen consoles. Which means Microsoft actually makes more money per 360 than the other 2...Unfortunately, they've also lost a lot of money from all the 360 failures. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
And when it comes down to it, it doesn't really matter much how good the game looks. It only matters if it's fun. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
i'm sorry Robert you are just wrong ! - Nigel Cooke
"i'm sorry Robert you are just wrong !" Yes, you are wrong! What you thought and what you saw with your own eye and and own experience is wrong! How could you have come to a conclusion based on your own experience! How dare you! - Johan Lieu
to be fair, xbox is year older technology and next gen will be several years before playstation's next gen - Mike Etheridge
I disagree with robert based on what I've seen, however i haven't seen dead space so I'll wait till it come out. Everything i've heard from developers indicates the power difference is not nearly what sony would like you to believe, the limited video memory and GPU really hurt the PS3. - Richard Lawler via twhirl
Only one box will play Halo 3 or do Windows Media Center. - Ernie Oporto
Basing this on one game is a bad idea - all it really means is that the port was lame. You can build a game for either system that looks better than the other - they are roughly equal. However Xbox Live is miles ahead of any other experience and the development path makes it much easier to build great games. Add in the media integration with windows networks and it's a real winner. - Soulhuntre
The Playstation has a handful of decent games but Xbox all the way for me, I like the Wii but I am dangerous when playing that! - Joe Dawson
BTW Dead Space's Isaac Clarke is now on twitter - @isaacclarke - Doug Brooks
I have yet to buy a iphone game and really haven't been compelled to. Well, I wouldn't mind frogger, pac-mac or tetris but $9.99 a piece for those seems excessive. I'm still not convinced. - Doug Brooks
and not just FF, generically I mean Twitter/Pownce/Jaiku/FF/Identi.ca/Plurk etc. We need a funny moniker for this class of service. 'Interrupt-to-daters?" - Dave Slusher
I hope they're not too essential for anyone! Infotainment at best. - Paul Reynolds
I certainly don't consider them essential, but they're useful for maintaining relationships with people I don't often (or never!) see. We missed ya, Dave! Welcome back. - Ken Kennedy
Yet there is the rub. You still found it "essential" to share the thought that it (upderupters, or your interrupt-to-daters) was unessential in your opinion. For brief moments not worthy of a blog post or podcast it has become a powerful meme. - Curtis Cross via twhirl
The problem with FriendFeed is that as more people come in, the conversations here are more and more mainstream. FriendFeed has some major problems with ability of focusing the info. Here, try to tell FriendFeed "show me all posts about John Edwards that have two or more likes and two or more comments." You can't do that. Until it does it'll turn more and more noisy and less and less addictive. - Robert Scoble
Hrm. That's a perspective I didn't consider. It's not essential for me to read up on FriendFeed. But it is very nice to shout thoughts out into the cloud on occasion if for no other reasons than self serving ones. - Paul Reynolds
i tend to agree with this sentiment as well. I'm all for memes, but I'm not getting tailored info anymore, just a lot of memes. - Doug Brooks
Lucky for me, a search like "show me all posts about x that have y or more likes and x or more comments" isn't something that even crosses my mind on FF. It's the feeds...of my friends. Of which I don't have 450. So I can actually, you know, read and respond. (note: that doesn't mean that different people can't use it otherwise, it just doesn't apply to me). - Ken Kennedy
Curtis, it's not the writing, it's the reading. I'm with Paul, the sharing feels more important to me lately than getting shared to. And to Ken's point, I almost feel like pulling back my subscriptions even more to a smaller set of people. - Dave Slusher
it all depends on what you're looking for. Also, whether you really jibe with the people that you connect with. It doesn't have to be a real deep personal connection; more a sympathy of thinking and spirits. - linkman77
"The way we developed the performance-capture workflow on 'Avatar" is we have our virtual camera, which allows me, in real time, to hold a camera -- it's really a monitor -- in my hands and point it at the actors and see them as their CG characters," Cameron said. - Doug Brooks via Bookmarklet
"MR Materials! is a free Mental Ray materials and shader repository. Created by Russell Thomas, Founder/CEO of 3DAllusions LLC with the help of Jeff Patton, as a resource for CG artist using applications with integrated mental ray or standalone version. Special thanks to Jared Martin and Harry Bardak for MatLab translataions into Maya and XSI." - Doug Brooks via Bookmarklet
You see a lot of people getting user feedback on their products here (Loic, etc), so it certainly facilitates some of that. Looking forward to seeing other links in this thread! - Bryan Landers
Wired called it crowdsourcing in 2006 - I believe -- gathering information from a crowd -- the negative connotation is outsourcing from internal sources to a crowd ... I believe. Please correct me if that is wrong. - LPH
It depends on the type of info you are looking for. I find causal info (like Mark's Oregon question) or social networking info can be found easily. Venture out of that and base doesn't exist yet Mailing lists and google groups still give far better info for much of what i'm interested in. - Doug Brooks
We've been worried that our youngest will start saying things that our older kids have been saying so we put a rule in place for them - avoid the words "crappy" and "stupid" (and some others). I was thrilled to hear my son tell someone that I used the "s" word the other day. As a result, I think iIm going to allow them to say "crappy" now. - Doug Brooks
gbaby (2.5) said something smelled like shit the other day. I was proud she used it in the right context. Her mom? Not so much. - Adrienne Van Houten
That is what made my laugh with the toddler, because he used it in the right context. He was in his car seat, the car wouldn't start, and he says, "uh oh F..., uh oh F..." I wanted to laugh and then cry. - Michelle Martinez

I was just hanging out with a Yosemite park ranger who's job is to chase away bears. She's chased 100s of them. Never a problem. She doesn't use kids either. :-) - Mitchell Tsai
And oh yes, here's my number if you want the other kid :p - directeur
This will come in handy when I'm up in Strawberry, CA this weekend.. which is overrun with Mountain Lions at this time of year. :) Thanks polly. - Brandon
Someone posted a sign like this at the Mountain Park near my home. (Mountain lions were also found in the backyard of my neighbor - just taking a cat nap!) - George Smith
I'm trying to figure out why monitors are calibrated to gamma 2.2 but the adobe monitor rgb spec claims 2.1. In the process, I found this awesome explanation of the color settings in cs3. - Doug Brooks via Bookmarklet
"Welcome to the first of the six-part tutorial series, discussing possibly the most challenging kind of 3D environment: interiors. mental ray (for Maya) users typically get cold feet and sweating fingers when it comes to this “closed combat”; the royal league of environment lighting. It’s for no reason though, as all you need for the battle is a simple field manual (this tutorial), and just a little bit of patience..." Nice mental ray shader and linear space tutorials. - Doug Brooks via Bookmarklet
“I just *hate* it when there is an awesome convo going on in FriendFeed that I can't join 'coz I donno what they are talking about. Esp. if it's something that's apparently 'Common Knowledge'”
I didn't know there were still lines though. The guy in front of me is going to stay in line even though he's on a corporate discount. Apple says he has to go to an AT&T store but he's adamant about staying. - Bwana McCall via fftogo
This is one of the worst sign up processes ever - super FAIL - Tony
it's been 4-5 hours all week at all *3* apple stores here in NYC. And now they're all out of black 16G's. Sigh. One day I'll upgrade. - felix
Bwana, tell him to dial 611, explain the situation and have him remove the fan number from his account. Then he'll be good to go and he can reactivate after he has the phone. - Doug Brooks
I am really wondering if I will be able to get one around August 1st like I had wanted to. With the lines and supply seeming as they are... I might just have a wait a bit longer it looks like. - Dean Clark
I, too, was excited this morning and even felt kind of warm and loved by the big U.S. exclusive iPhone provider - like maybe they really did want to be closer to the cutting edge and show their highly-paying customers some goodness. What a mess they have made, however. It's like my boss sending me an email that I'm getting a raise, then saying "oops, sorry, I didn't mean that" ... then doing it again! - matt hollingsworth
it's like your own personal radio station on your iPhone. I have a feeling though that if you use it 24/7 with 3G that it will wreck havoc on your battery life. - Thomas Hawk
yeah, I can't tell any difference between my mp3s on my iPhone and streaming Pandora on 3G. - Thomas Hawk
I'm liking it and lastfm as well. I see these as the killer apps as well. - Doug Brooks
gonna kick the tires on it and try it out - Carlos Lopez
Discovered the wonders of the Pandora .app for myself yesterday as well. - m.0
Pandora is in my top tier of most-valued iPhone apps - Michael Markman
A colleague who considers himself an audiophile says Pandora sound quality is poor. Is he full of it? - Alexei Tolkachev
The app apparently doesn't work outside the US --same as the webapp :-( - Rubin Sfadj
@alexei It's always compared to what. Audiophiles tell you that CDs suck compared to vinyl LPs. mp3 suck more. But people have huge tolerance for mediocre sound. Listening to Pandora through Apple earbuds with lots of ambient noise, it sounds pretty good. Run it on a good audio system, your friend is right. - Michael Markman
What is the sound like on EDGE? 3G in our building is pathetic, but the phone refuses to give up even the weakest available 3G signal in favor of a stronger EDGE signal. That's another pet peeve of this same guy, who is blazing the trail here. He switches 3G off and on manually when he enters and leaves the building. - Alexei Tolkachev
I'm loving the Pandora iPhone app also. It's the first app I installed. - Nora Rubinoff
The sounds quality on Pandora is good enough for me. mp3 is inferior to lossless but I've always been able to accept this level of quality for the convenience that it provides. - Thomas Hawk
It runs surprisingly well on edge. On the quality topic, in order to have truly high fidelity you would have to walk around dragging a 2-inch reel to reel . This fits in my pocket so I'm sold.:) - m.0
Now if Xirius er. Sirius and XM would just release their apps, I may get rid of my in-car player. - Sean Alexander
would love to get Howard Stern on my iPhone. - Thomas Hawk
have you tried the last.fm app? i prefer those stations to pandora, seems more relevant imo. - Matt Albiniak
last.fm has a deeper back end that after months of usage i think, will prove to be more entertaining than pandora. although i do currently love pandora. - Brian Ries
Jon - Install Tuner ($4.99). Search for BBC. Viola, BBC on your iPhone. - Bwana McCall
By the way, Howard Stern is accessible on Tuner too. As you can see, I really like the selection Tuner offers which is why I paid $5 for it..on TOP of Pandora :) - Bwana McCall
It is a nice app, but I wish they used the single and double click thing that's part of the headphones. Single click = mute, double click = next song. - Otto R. Radke
Are things like this going to kill XM and Sirius? - Kat
Having trouble with Pandora losing server connection. - Michael Markman
This would be the reason I upgrade my iPHone- cool custom radio! - anna
Finally, a valid reason to own an iPhone! - Jody C
i think XM and Sirius are totally different things than pandora and last.fm....the latter are more like recommendation engines. - Brian Ries
The AOL radio app also works well for someone that wants the more generic radio effect. Does need wi-fi or 3G. Edge is too slow. - William Reveal via twhirl
