I have yet to buy a iphone game and really haven't been compelled to. Well, I wouldn't mind frogger, pac-mac or tetris but $9.99 a piece for those seems excessive. I'm still not convinced. - Doug Brooks

and not just FF, generically I mean Twitter/Pownce/Jaiku/FF/Identi.ca/Plurk etc. We need a funny moniker for this class of service. 'Interrupt-to-daters?" - Dave Slusher
I hope they're not too essential for anyone! Infotainment at best. - Paul Reynolds
I certainly don't consider them essential, but they're useful for maintaining relationships with people I don't often (or never!) see. We missed ya, Dave! Welcome back. - Ken Kennedy
Yet there is the rub. You still found it "essential" to share the thought that it (upderupters, or your interrupt-to-daters) was unessential in your opinion. For brief moments not worthy of a blog post or podcast it has become a powerful meme. - Curtis Cross via twhirl
The problem with FriendFeed is that as more people come in, the conversations here are more and more mainstream. FriendFeed has some major problems with ability of focusing the info. Here, try to tell FriendFeed "show me all posts about John Edwards that have two or more likes and two or more comments." You can't do that. Until it does it'll turn more and more noisy and less and less addictive. - Robert Scoble
Hrm. That's a perspective I didn't consider. It's not essential for me to read up on FriendFeed. But it is very nice to shout thoughts out into the cloud on occasion if for no other reasons than self serving ones. - Paul Reynolds
@Scoble: you could just use the search. - Vincent van Wylick
i tend to agree with this sentiment as well. I'm all for memes, but I'm not getting tailored info anymore, just a lot of memes. - Doug Brooks
Lucky for me, a search like "show me all posts about x that have y or more likes and x or more comments" isn't something that even crosses my mind on FF. It's the feeds...of my friends. Of which I don't have 450. So I can actually, you know, read and respond. (note: that doesn't mean that different people can't use it otherwise, it just doesn't apply to me). - Ken Kennedy
Curtis, it's not the writing, it's the reading. I'm with Paul, the sharing feels more important to me lately than getting shared to. And to Ken's point, I almost feel like pulling back my subscriptions even more to a smaller set of people. - Dave Slusher
it all depends on what you're looking for. Also, whether you really jibe with the people that you connect with. It doesn't have to be a real deep personal connection; more a sympathy of thinking and spirits. - linkman77

"The way we developed the performance-capture workflow on 'Avatar" is we have our virtual camera, which allows me, in real time, to hold a camera -- it's really a monitor -- in my hands and point it at the actors and see them as their CG characters," Cameron said. - Doug Brooks via Bookmarklet

Is that what it's called now? But anyway, yes, it is. :-) - Dread Pirate PJ via Alert Thingy
Wired called it crowdsourcing in 2006 - I believe -- gathering information from a crowd -- the negative connotation is outsourcing from internal sources to a crowd ... I believe. Please correct me if that is wrong. - LPH

Maybe for others it isn't, but for me, Friendfeed is invaluable. I've found out information about Oregon (http://friendfeed.com/e/a3311f...), information about the best places to live (http://friendfeed.com/e/0fd428...), SEO Help (http://friendfeed.com/e/b7039e...), types of statistical analysis software (http://friendfeed.com/e/3df5ca...), what time Mad Men starts (http://friendfeed.com/e/9c6c86...), website feedback (http://friendfeed.com/e/ef8e5a...), and that's only in the past week or so. - Mark Trapp
It depends on the type of info you are looking for. I find causal info (like Mark's Oregon question) or social networking info can be found easily. Venture out of that and base doesn't exist yet Mailing lists and google groups still give far better info for much of what i'm interested in. - Doug Brooks

"Welcome to the first of the six-part tutorial series, discussing possibly the most challenging kind of 3D environment: interiors. mental ray (for Maya) users typically get cold feet and sweating fingers when it comes to this “closed combat”; the royal league of environment lighting. I, too, was excited this morning and even felt kind of warm and loved by the big U.S. exclusive iPhone provider - like maybe they really did want to be closer to the cutting edge and show their highly-paying customers some goodness. What a mess they have made, however. It's like my boss sending me an email that I'm getting a raise, then saying "oops, sorry, I didn't mean that" ... then doing it again! - matt hollingsworth
