This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.

Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)

Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).

I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)

- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)

depends on how much longer FF sticks around for...
- Kim
Chris subscribed to ya! Mahalo! David - I DO! I tell them at least once a day to join me here for a more in depth conversation. I even stopped one conversation cold this morning and told him it belonged here not on Twitter.
- Arleen Anderson
Kim - sadly it is a concern. I just see FB messing up FF in the future... and people don't want to keep jumping networks.
- Arleen Anderson
I so agree! Tired of Twitter Twissues!
- Jeff Hurt
FriendFeed is a MUCH better communication arena, but it's just not as "catchy". Very little customization.
- Nick Armstrong
Okay let's go get everybody HERE where we can have real discussions... then we can plan our Long Term strategy for Citizen Journalism! They won't do away with this FF for at least a few months!
- Arleen Anderson
All ideas for saving a FF like community (or if we must plan a mass migration) post HERE!
- Arleen Anderson
yeah FF is cool, hope it doesn't change now that FB bought it, hope it gets better...not sure why twitter keeps going down, but FF seems more reliable&works w/twhirl, FB doesn't
- Patty
from twhirl
At least we have each other here... @ least 4 the time being on FF... How're you, Arleen?
- CarolAnnB
Oh Me 2. I feel like I'm to loud for the small room. LOL
- Carol Rambo
...maybe Twitter's just gotten too big to be supported by just one company? imagine if all telecom service was run by just AT&T. Twitter needs legitimate competition, so that it's millions of users (and growing) don't constantly get inconenienced by inevitable systems problems, hacker attacks, etc.
- .LAG liked that
I believe it will be a bi difficult to get everyone over here...Worth a shot though. We ARE going to need to make a change since it seems that Twitter is impotent in running a dependable service.
- Alonis
This has been bugging me today too, Arleen. Of course the last time it wasn't an issue with them so much as it was an outside attack upon their servers.
- Harold Paxton
Patty, CarolAnn, Carol, Lag, Alonis... we have a finite (and unknown) amount of time to DO something. FF has a simple reliable platform that works well for connection and discussion. But, w/ FB it will eventually be integrated and get cumbersome like FB is! So... we need something else ya? What do you really want/need most in a network community? These guys only care about real time search and how much $$$ they get for that.
- Arleen Anderson
Mahalo Arleen, yes I do believe we need a better platform, this is why I do jump in with both feet on some of the app's. I'm always looking. I do have a lot of tech's that I follow as do you. I'm interested, if you find better, you will let us know, right? LOL
- Carol Rambo
FF seems like the best alternative right now to twitter,as long as it doesn't change, not sure what else is out there similar to twitter
- Patty
from twhirl
I hang my head in shame as I bounced over to Twitter the minute it was up... problem is: though I ADORE and value the awesome conversations with you here... there are others I don't want to ignore on Twitter... so split... damn FB for buying FF!
- Arleen Anderson
Okay, I'm kind of feeling like a Yo-Yo with twitter today.
- Harold Paxton
Why Harold! Are you a Twitter Yo-Yo or a Twitter Ho?? *giggle*
- Arleen Anderson
I'm trying to use friendfeed for the week and seeing how it works out. I just wish there was more apps for it.
- Robert Alex
LOL Thanks a lot, Arleen! I think I may be both!! Looks like Twitter is working on the web side of things for me. but the tweetdeck is problematic.
- Harold Paxton
Robert I found with the grouping ability and the discussion threads - there's no need for much in the way of user apps here. It's so simple clean and USABLE! Do use the grouping features both for "friends" and "Groups" and have fun with real discussions you can follow! Harold, TweetDeck doesn't work w/ my follower count. I tweet via the Web!
- Arleen Anderson
Thanks for the advice to, Robert, Arleen. That's helpful for me too!
- Harold Paxton
Do you have any groups you recommend?
- Harold Paxton
Harold, I'm in te Hawaii group of course to see my local Ohana! And with the BlackBerry group cause I have one, and with Backlink free and Audiophile... but those are just my personal interests. I also like tech stuff but am in many on Facebook. I organized my friends here in groups depending on what they talk about most.
- Arleen Anderson
I do enjoy the groups feature a lot. That only may get me to switch.
- Robert Alex
Okay. Thanks, Arleen. I appreciate the info :-)
- Harold Paxton
So Robert is asking people if they're leaving FF. Without a plan guys we got same 'ol same 'ol... so WHAT is important to you??
- Arleen Anderson
Roger that Arleen, signed up 15 minutes ago as "backup." I echo your sentiments exactly.
- Paul Roberts
FF more important to me as aggregator of my other content but as Twitter has issues I'm liking the communication interface I think twitter still be my primary
- WarLord
I am a member but haven't really used this too much. Does it work like Twitter?
- Beverly Monical
Beverly, yes, but with threads and no whales.
- Marco Neves
Yeah, FriendFeed is so much faster in posting, too. I love it. Let's start the next wave in social media! Twitter has jumped the shark. :)
- LisaGemini
My company is FINALLY upgrading us to Vista, IE7, and Office '07. And we're forced to attend an "Essentials" training course. Holy shit, I cannot believe that there are people in this company who are THIS stupid. Srsly. I can feel myself actually being relieved of IQ points while sitting thru this.
You are upgrading to Vista now?!?! Skip it and go straight to Win7!
- Sparky
"now, click the big windows logo... goooood"
- Sparky
I can't imagine anyone would upgrade to Vista *now* when Win7 has just been released. Win7 is going to make us forget what an abomination Vista really was.
- Joey Gibson
The problem is that we started this rollout to Vista about six months ago (I'm at the tail end...EXCRUCIATING) because we're also doing a huge hardware replacement at the same time. And this project started just after Vista dropped ("started" meaning selection of hardware and development of software package). Plus our Vista is extremely customized. So. Switching to Win 7 would have...

@Earl: Oh the entertainment value is HIGH with this group. There are a few people in here who have already been upgraded but require this training AGAIN. So hearing their "horror stories" is Hy. Ste. Ri. KULL. "I can never find the save button so I just had to leave documents open for days until someone could show me." "I still don't know how to shut my PC down, so it's not been restarted since April." "I can't believe they took the paperclip away...how can I use Word without that to help me?!"

We had to go on a training course with a test at the end when they upgraded Outlook some years ago, yes it was painful.
- M F
I used to be a trainer and I also used to write training modules, so I'm used to having to account for varying skill levels within a single group of people. I upgraded my company laptop from Vista to Win7 on Saturday, with the company's blessing (and the company's paid-for copy of Win7). Win7 really puts Vista to shame.
- Joey Gibson
@Curtis: I think that a number of these people are doing just that...hoping they'll be told "Oh, we'll roll you back to XP because Vista and Office '07 are a hindrance to your job." However, our company would rather offer them a severance package and pay someone younger and newer. :) I am just evil enough to wholly support that endeavor.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@amanda The thing that scared me while I was still at my job was the sheer volume of people *younger* than me (and I'm only 28) with zero capacity to use a computer. You know, you guys were nagging Apple like this last year. You wanted 3G, you wanted GPS bla bla. Now you're poo-pooing GPS and saying that there is zero coverage of 3G in the US. The beauty of the iPhone is the lack of a continual need for hardware updates. The functionality is not tied to the phone. Every version of the phone has the same functionality, only with different specs

Photoshop is a professional designer's tool. It's not for everyone. You wouldn't want to use GIMP for real stuff though. It's mostly for programmers that want to make a placeholder image.
- Cristo
I just need something to quickly crop photos...don't need PS.
- Alex Scoble
I didn't mean to imply Photoshop was harder to learn. I meant it's got a lot of features, is memory intensive, and costs a lot I've used it since the first versions. I'm mostly happy with it, although I think the U/X could be a lot better. I think most of the other paint tools are toys.
- Cristo
Why not just use Microsoft Office Picture Manager. It has all you mentioned already.
- CW™
Umm, yeah, it's pretty much as bad as PS. Trying out Paint.NET now.
- Alex Scoble
If you were on a Mac, you could just use Preview. It's pretty good for what you want. Isn't there a Photo viewer on Windows that does cropping?
- Cristo
Can't you just use the Picture and Fax Viewer that is native to Windows?
- Cristo
Not really hard in PS either, just use the selection tool, drag a box, Image > Crop. Same as Paint.net really :D
- Mo Kargas
Don't think so. The UI is not very nice at all
- Marcel Janus
In regards to MS Paint, scissors work too - but they might damage the monitor
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I think PS is simple and pretty straightforward. Crop in PS is ridiculously easy.
- Captain Bubbles
Who cares if its fugly it gets the job done ;) and Anika there are a lot of features of PS some people don't like them - I don't think I've even used half of them. I'd like to see a 'light' version of the PS which lighter features and the documentation removed and moved to the cloud
- Nicholas James
Nicholas, check the link I posted above. 10 different versions of what you're talking about.
- Jason Wehmhoener
There's nothing about PS that is easy, Anika...and this is coming from a guy who's pretty good at figuring out interfaces.
- Alex Scoble
Jason: http://app.photoshop.com/express... is down and thats the only one on that list which appears able to be able to edit .psd which is why I'm interested in ;) Although Paint.net would be my 2nd choice and then MS Paint...I actually saw an amazing drawing a guy did on paint I'll see if I can dig it up
- Nicholas James
Paint.NET worked well, although I don't know how to set the rectangular selection tool to be a certain ratio like you can in PS.
- Alex Scoble
PSD was not a requirement for me, Jason. :)
- Alex Scoble
True, I was replying to Nicholas. Anyway. Splashup from that list is kinda nice. But once you start adding options such as constraining a selection to an aspect ratio, etc., don't you quickly arrive at a product that is just as complex as Photoshop? And if so, personally, I find Photoshop manages the complexity quite well. It just takes time to get familiar with it.
- Jason Wehmhoener
It takes some getting used to, so give it some time, but in the end, I think you'll find it a fine replacement. DM me if you have any questions about how to do something. Get your right clicky finger ready!
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
@Alex if you end up using Paint.Net make sure to check out the many great plugins that are out there for it. Greatly expands what you can do with it easily
- Steven Hodson
I've used paint.net extensively and agree that the plugins are a must! Also, the overall user experience with paint.net is fantastic, imo
- Bren, Not Grinchy
Photoshop is easy to use, it just takes 3 years of training. I'd go with Paint.NET. I haven't had good experiences with GIMP, it makes less sense than Photoshop to me.
- xero

Ciaoenrico- it IS the salt! That's the key to the yumminess! You figured it out! Hooray. I finally know why I'm fatter than I should be! And I don't care enough to not go buy a bag of these on the way home tonight!!!
- Morgan Haley
Good. I was afraid they were going to disappear. Our family used to love the mixed bag.

I just noticed this. Kellogg = Northwestern's b-school and Kellog = cereal...? Hm, I need to Google. BRB. *edit: they are both Kellogg. Jeez. Confusing.
- Mona Nomura
They've been on the shelf here for a bit (like 2 weeks-ish) and we've bought them every chance we get so far. I know it's my imagination, but I can't help but feel that they taste a little different. :) I'm broken.

"The Explorers program, a coeducational affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that began 60 years ago, is training thousands of young people in skills used to confront terrorism, illegal immigration and escalating border violence — an intense ratcheting up of one of the group’s longtime missions to prepare youths for more traditional jobs as police officers and firefighters."

“This is about being a true-blooded American guy and girl,” said A. J. Lowenthal, a sheriff’s deputy here in Imperial County, whose life clock, he says, is set around the Explorers events he helps run. “It fits right in with the honor and bravery of the Boy Scouts.”
- Cee Bee
gonna be a lot of casualties among the boy scouts if they think they're gonna go up against mexican cartels
- Cee Bee
“I like shooting them,” Cathy said. “I like the sound they make. It gets me excited.”
- joneilortiz
get some young mexican-americans to fight mexicans. yeah, that'll solve the problem. win-win for the powers that be
- Cee Bee
At least this gets them away from all the violent video games.
- Vaughn
this country's broken. shouldn't they be playing with green technology or something?
- joneilortiz
WTF... This is wrong on some many levels. The Boy Scouts are "NOT' or at least were not... A paramilitary primer for the Police or Military! Sure kids are drawn to that kind of stuff, but the scouts were a place to grow leadership and Nature craft. That troop should be looked at very closely. Something is very wrong there.
- Bluesun 2600
the only problem with this is that they could be used to serve a particular ideology. I assume they're only learning the tactics and not the ideas behind it. one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, right?
- Rudolf Olah
rudolf, i wouldn't say that's the ONLY problem here. they're children (as young as 14 years old) being trained & primed for battle, which may or may not come at a later time outside of the boy scouts. that alone is pretty alarming. these kids should be having soapbox derbys and cookouts. and how would one learn tactics such as the ones being mentioned without having some kind of ideology behind it? makes no sense to me
- Cee Bee
Totally unbelievable which gives it some credibility:(
- Roney Smith
Compare to the Girl Scouts: "Many lessons focus on changing the world in measurable, modern ways. Recycling is still an important part of lessons on helping the environment, but some troops also install solar panels and test water quality in rivers. In Boston last year, fourth- and fifth-grade Scouts conducted an energy audit of the city’s convention center using sophisticated...

@Cee Bee, kids play shooting games all the time. Shite, I bet I could clear a room and save some hostages thanks to playing Rainbow Six! :P but about soapbox derbies...this is the Explorers program, not the Boy Scouts, they have different goals.
- Rudolf Olah
@Rudolf: I don't think 'kids playing shooting games' is the same as kids being trained for war, but I'm not a 'true-blooded American' (or even an American).
- Eivind
yeah, i don't see the analogy in quite the same way as rudolf does. the explorer's program of the boy scouts was not created to prepare and/or train boy scouts for aiding law enforcement or military in their future missions or goals
- Cee Bee
And even if they were trained for real military goals, who are these "terrorists" they're after? Muslim charities, animal rights groups, truth-telling journalists, Palestinians, insurgents resisting occupations, etc.
- joneilortiz
It is quite possible that the Department of Homeland Security has taken this "war on terror" thing too far. Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
- Thomas Ward
all of you people who commented negatively on this thread, you better be waiting for that 2 a.m. knock on the door. A bunch of 8-year-olds are going to extraordinary-rendition you to Guantanamo.

Just love the Amazon MP3 experience, just wish they had a better collection.
- Travis Koger
Jason meant *buy* (only) as the MP3 Downloader simply processes Amazon downloads and then moves them to iTunes...
- Ryan
Because I can buy from iTunes on my iPhone and have the music immediately. Since both are DRM-free now, the only difference is price and, depending upon how badly I want to hear the music, I'll happily pay $.10 extra per track to have it right now v. when I go home and sync my phone.
- Brett Kelly
Because they live outside the United States
- Michael Sheehan
What is the battery life like now then? (compared to iPhone 3G for example, as that's what I have)
- Jalada
I unplugged it this morning at 7am, I've used it for alot of talking and some surfing and downloading throughout the day, and it's 6pm and I have 1/2 battery left.
- Evan Travers
It used to be just about finished around 1pm... I think I could easily go 12 hours. That's not constant use, but that's a heck of alot better than what I used to get on my iPhone (edge).

- Anthony Citrano
AJ...sounds like you got yourself a tv show...sad thing is it would probably do well...
- Jeffrey Marsh
@Jeffrey: Sad, but ... probably true. And then 10 years down the line there's the 'Where Are They Now' episodes.
- AJ Kohn
@AJ and @Jeffrey - I dunno why that's sad. Or rather, why it would be any sadder than, say, ‘The Bachelor’.
- Anthony Citrano
So much of this to be sad about... Her overzealous desire to win a beauty contest at all cost and be a product,(even a bad boob job), the contest's need to win and treat her like a product, the media's need to discuss it, our need to watch this train wreck.... sigh...
- Brad Nickel
@Anthony: Equally sad. Bachelor is ... terrifying IMO.
- AJ Kohn
But Brad, if modifying oneself to be a better ‘product’ is an innately sad thing, there are millions of sad people around. Not a day goes by that I don't see advice being solicited about: how to write a better resume, which classes to take to excel in certain professions, how to kiss your boss' ass, or how best to get the attention of a ‘hiring manager’. Same shit, different outfits.
- Anthony Citrano
And BTW I don't really think it's a bad boob job myself.
- Anthony Citrano
Not a bad augmentation, the valley still runs too wide but she chose an appropriate size to her build.
- Janet
@jlt, agreed re: sizing, but she'll likely need that valley in her future porn career.
- Anthony Citrano
I said it was a bad boob job for the simple fact that it decidedly looks like a boob job. Natural C cups don't look like skin colored Tupperware in a string bikini like that. As for the visible sternum ridges (aka the Skelator look), that's a whole 'nother discussion that I'll leave for another time.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
And she has a gap the size of the Grand Canyon between them!!!
- Lokei Atikus™®
@Tina: I hear ya, but many who get boob jobs aren't going for the totally ‘natural’ look; they're going for the ‘better-than-natural’ look. (And, of course, that's purely subjective.) @Lokei: I bet Janet wishes she had thought of that.
- Anthony Citrano
@Lokei, grand canyon ties Tina's Tupperware comment (total LOL), but Anthony did suggest she had a great career for after the beauty pagent competitions :)
- Janet
Damn, is it true or what? it's impossible to happen even if it's a sexual thing? anybody have a known about this ???????????
- FFTornado
@Mohammad, even if this is a Photoshop job, I know somebody who used to work in A&E (UK version of the ER). I've heard some stories and, yeah, I think this could happen. I won't go into details here, but there is apparently a point of no return with certain orifices that, if you pass them with an object, means you will need medical attention to retrieve said object. /me winces...
- Andy Bold
@Andy: So it's a bit like the event horizon around black holes?
- Jemm
@Jemm: Thanks, seriously, for making me spray coffee all over my keyboard :-D Butt, yeah, I that's what I heard. Damn - this is starting to sound like "I had this friend once who..."
- Andy Bold
I used to work with ER nurses and I've heard stories much worse than this one, which really can happen.
- Trish R
what Trish said. : ) there was a thread about that right here on FF sometime back too.

What used to crack me up was the tales of How something happened. So many foolish people leaving soap on the floor and walking around the house naked. Tsk!

I think I'm going to vomit. Jemm, re you sure it's a SHE?
- Mark R. Sukoenig
@ZOD: Yeah, must have been awkward misunderstanding :D
- Jemm
@Mark: Like I said before (and some people afterwards), there are differences in male and female pelvises. See Rick Cogleys comment above, for example. :)
- Jemm
Acording to a paramedic friend, this is fairly common. If the bottle is empty, it develops a vacuum and a probe is used to "break the seal".

These things happen. Every ER doc and every radiologist has a collection of x-rays depicting rectal foreign bodies. I once saw a guy with a screwdriver in there, with the pointy end pointing upward. But the ones that really give me the heebie-jeebies are the urethral insertions.
- Victor Ganata
I'm over it. I'm over people overreacting, and I might rue the day that I say this, but if/when it mutates into something on the level of The Hot Zone, that's when we should be scared. If you get freaking swine flu, kick back, get some rest, drink plenty of fluids and chill the eff out. I'm tired of this crap.
