LOL, Nerd of the Year indeed. The middle picture looks like you're about to crawl out of my TV because I watched a video tape. At least you called me 7 days before to warn me. - Haggis (Sean)
Macaroni noodles with a light cheese-cream sauce topped with a puddle of spicy tomato based sauce topped with a steak. It was good. - Lindsay Donaghe
My mother used to eat mayo and grape jelly sandwiches. Quite the strange but not-entirely-off-putting combo. - Akiva Moskovitz
When I was 16-ish, I snuck some alcohol from my parents' cabinet - it was whiskey. I didn't have a clue what it mixed with, so I poured it into a glass of milk. Bad idea, but I drank it out of guilt because I didn't want to waste the whiskey. - Rochelle
Outsanity - do you like cooked Salmon and/or Tuna? If so then you have NO IDEA what you're missing. Sashimi is the best damned thing you can eat. Period. - Tad - just Tad
Dinner rolls in root beer. I still do that when both those items are available to me. - Morton Fox
Tad, I can't get Rochelle into sushi no matter how hard I've tried. Even albacore, which has a very similar taste and texture to tinned tuna, doesn't work. I eat sushi, she eats tempura. We're doomed. - Akiva Moskovitz
Live Elk... as in something with antlers? WTF - John Worthington
Oh, there was also this time when a so-called friend convinced me that Crisco was a good substitute for butter when making Kraft boxed mac&cheese. It, uh, wasn't. - Rochelle
I one time convinced a friend that it was delicious to fry Pop Tarts in butter. - Akiva Moskovitz
"The ad generator is a generative artwork that explores how advertising uses and manipulates language. Words and semantic structures from real corporate slogans are remixed and randomized to generate invented slogans. These slogans are then paired with related images from Flickr, thereby generating fake advertisements on the fly. By remixing corporate slogans, I intend to show how the language of advertising is both deeply meaningful, in that it represents real cultural values and desires, and yet utterly meaningless in that these ideas have no relationship to the products being sold. In using the Flickr images, the piece explores the relationship between language and image, and how meaning is constructed by the juxtaposition of the two." - Christopher Harley via Bookmarklet

"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business," Frank said on Capitol Hill. "I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time." [H.R. 5843, the 'Act to Remove Federal Penalties for the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults', is now before the US Congress] - Anthony Citrano
I agree, Tad, I think momentum is on the side of common sense... a dozen states or so have done it, now it's time for federal law to get some sanity.. [i hate when i try to delete the bookmarklet text and the text drops] - Anthony Citrano
Don't just cross your fingers, Sean - call, write, e-mail your legislators and push them on it. - Anthony Citrano
Anthony, the Feds currently are prosecuting people who were legally using in some of those states (part of my whole 'states rights' rant). Plus, the wording in the legislation means having it is legal but getting it or growing it still is covered by existing laws, which is a half-arsed solution at best. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Oh Tina - for sure! A clinic was just busted not far from here a couple months ago. It's rare, though (thankfully, they don't have the resources or political support to come down very hard), and the dying gasps of an unsustainable policy. - Anthony Citrano
Hm, Chris, I just remember you insisting marijuana wasn't decriminalized in any state, and it faded from there. I don't know what I'm letting go. I'm more aggressive than most on the policies - I believe we should completely repeal the CSA. But a baby step in the right direction would be to decrim marijuana and treat it like any other crop. - Anthony Citrano
"I just remember you insisting marijuana wasn't decriminalized in any state, and it faded from there." - WTF?!? Find that in my posts. - Christopher Harley
@Christopher: "Anthony- I know of no state where simple possession has been completely decriminalized." - You - Anthony Citrano
@Christopher: You, when realizing there were, in fact, such states: "[in those states] seizure would be a forgone conclusion in order to prove the state's case. The plant material would be held as evidence pending trial. After the defendant copped a plea, the marijuana would be destroyed." [also mistaken. look, I'm not picking on you, I was just saying that was where our convo went dead.] - Anthony Citrano
Yes, and to this day one will be prosecuted for simple possession in every state in the union. The argument went off the rails when you described mere ounces as "massive amounts." - Christopher Harley
@Anthony I realized no such thing. I answered this rebuttal, state by state., "...There are several, Christopher - Alaska, NY, CA, OH, Nebraska, Maine off the top of my head. No drug treatment BS, no misdemeanor, no physician's recommendation BS, and in some states no seizure." - Christopher Harley
Chris, don't want to run in circles with you on this, but your statements are simply not supported by the facts. Facts are not debatable; something is either a crime or it is not. In the other thread, I named the states where personal possession is not a crime. For example, I would be really interested to know under what state statute you'd propose to criminally prosecute a Maine, Nebraska, or Alaska resident for PPU. - Anthony Citrano
Well, here's the facts. Read them. *Alaska -More than 4 oz, felony *New York -8 to 16 oz, felony *California -More than 28.5 g, misdemeanor *Ohio -100 g to 200 g, 4th degree misdemeanor *Nebraska -1 oz or less (first offense), civil citation, drug counseling, $300 fine *Maine -"Usable Amount" (under <1.25 oz), $350-$650 fine. - Christopher Harley
Perhaps our disconnect revolves around what you consider a reasonable amount for personal use. Most legislation seems to center around an ounce or a bit more - but some up to a quarter pound. I assume you know how much pot volume an ounce is, right? It's a lot of pot - probably 16+ cubic inches of the stuff. If someone has that much pot on them, chances are it is not just for personal use, and the laws have been crafted that way. - Anthony Citrano
The most important thing to take away from this exchange is that people are still being prosecuted because possession is still prosecutable. There's no need to try and foster a false sense of security in any casual user simply because they never possess anything more than a quarter-ounce at a time. - Christopher Harley
I was in the Governor's office when the Maine bill was being debated. "Usable amount" under 1.25 oz in that legislation is specifically defined as *not criminal*. That's why the law was written; the Legislature's *intent* was to decriminalize personal use. Alaska: less than 4 oz *not criminal*. Ohio under 100g *not criminal*. Nebraska - less than an ounce *not criminal*. Not criminal = decriminalized. Where's the disconnect? - Anthony Citrano
@Christopher I hear what you're saying and my intent is not to instill a false sense of security (although why any casual user is carrying more than an ounce around is beyond me.) I think my point is that there is a trend, at the state level, in what I view as the right direction. I am fairly optimistic the Congress will follow. - Anthony Citrano
@Anthony I agree. These laws suck and have from day-one. The bottom line is that no state in the union has decriminalized possession. That's right, it's a crime. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed over your conjecture regarding what an individual does with 2 pounds of weed. Somehow that elicits your suspicion yet a wine cellar, a liquor cabinet, or a keg-refrigerator means nothing. - Christopher Harley
No state has completely decriminalized possession in larger quantities, no (although I think with a doctor's rec, you can have unlimited amounts in CA, but I'm not sure?) And you and I are on the same page about that - don't misread me - it does not make me suspicious - but it is unusual to have such a large amount on your person (where you're likely to encounter law enforcement). I do not think it should be a crime in any amount. Stock up on it all you want - wine, hash, vodka, whatever. - Anthony Citrano
We just had a chain of Medicinal Marijuana clinics apply with us for credit card processing and it is going to be more difficult to get approved than an online pharmacy. Ridiculous. - Brad Nickel

A lot of well-intentioned people have hopped on to motorcycles and scooters recently in an effort to do their part to help out the environment. Sadly, they’re actually polluting a lot more on even the smallest of scooters than they would be driving a car. - Mahdi Ebrahimi via Bookmarklet
Honda's GX35 and GX50, 4-stroke engines, reduce hydrocarbon emissions to 1/7 those of typical 2-strokes. At work in a motorized bicycle (not a moped or scooter) this incredibly efficient and ultimately cleaner engine can deliver both rider and payload. The future of commuting deserves practical designs that strive for optimal efficiency. That's why I'm building-out an Electra Townie, stretched with the ExtraCycle, driven by the Honda GX35 to a NuVinci CVP Hub. - Christopher Harley
The middle one looks like a real mag pic - gorgeous :) - Dom
Except that a real graphic designer wouldn't run type right across someones eyes. Slide the whole photo down about 10mm, and it'll be fine. And flip it left-right, so that she's on the left edge - for visibility if competing mags are stacked horizontally with just the edge showing. - Ian Tindale
From Gizmodo: "The benefit to a belt drive system over a chain and shifters system is that it won't stretch and break over time like a chain, weighs significantly less, stays clean (and keeps your cuffs clean) and is quiet. The downside? It's more expensive." - Mark Trapp via Bookmarklet
Interesting to see a motorcycle development finally make it's way to bikes. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
yep, that new trek commuter bike is one i'm really looking into. besides being clean as hell, it sports that new belt drive thingy, which seems like a plus all around - Cee Bee
I have the (chain drive) SOHO 3: probably my favorite bike of all time. I've also got a SOHO S on order. The belt drive thing is interesting. We're really seeing bike companies flock to urban cycles now, and that will mean some really cool innovations. BTW, these bikes really *should* come with fenders ... - Chris Baskind
Definitely liking that Soho bike. Too bad I don't actually commute by bike. - saeba
I prefer the cog one, I think it was Mark who found it a while back - Toby Graham
Hmmm... I wonder how you change the rear tire/tube with that setup. - Kirk Kittell
The District belt drive singlespeed is overpriced. It's basically the same bike as the SOHO S, but almost twice the price. Looks cool, though. - Chris Baskind
Kirk: Looks like it has a quick release. Probably no dofferent than a regular bike. It'll be much, much cleaner, though. - Chris Baskind
Belts don't stretch and break over time? Anyone who's had to change a fanbelt or timing belt at two o'clock in the morning, ankle deep in snow would beg to differ. Also, chains work when they're wet, and work better when they're greasy. Belts don't work too well when wet, and not at all when greasy. Belts can twist, chains can't. Belts can be cut, chains can't. Chains can be repaired, belts can't. Chains can be adjusted, belts can't. I know what I'm sticking with, lol. - Slippy Lane
Yeah, I'm not canceling my SOHO S order for the belt. But hooray for fresh thinking. ;-) - Chris Baskind
i agree it's a bit overpriced. they were listing it just under a grand. the soho s is a great bike as well. super minimal and a great price. i remember discussing it a little while back and that you had ordered one. they must be in heavy demand if you're to receive yours in october - Cee Bee
Couldn't tell, but from the pictures it looks like these are only single gear mechanisms? I'd be interested in these, but I do need at least a few gears. - felix
correct, they are only single gear bikes - Cee Bee
The belt-drive SOHO ($989.99) has the excellent 8-speed Shimano Alfine rear hub, so it's geared. The belt-drive District ($929.99) is a single speed. The rest of Trek's urban bikes are chain drive. The SOHO now comes with matching fenders. It's beautiful and a well-priced. They'll sell every last one they build. I'm impressed. - Chris Baskind
Bridgestone had a belt driven bike back in the 80s...hardly a new development. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
There's a big difference between Bridgestone 20 years ago and Trek today. Trek is huge. If they spec'd with a belt drive, you know they're confident in the technology and that parts will be available. First *mass market* belt drive, then. ;-) - Chris Baskind
Obviously, on an electric bike, lighter=better, and belts are lighter than chains, so... - Slippy Lane
"stays clean (and keeps your cuffs clean)" - Yep tell me that when that rear sprocket is cludgy with winter grime in London and it starts skipping due to the contents of the towpath getting in among the parts. It's got a chainguard FFS, of course it keeps your cuffs clean, so does a chained bike with one. Absolutely agree about repairability. If I snap a chain anywhere in the world I can take a link out and refix it, can I do that with a belt? Why try and find a solution to 100 years of working? - Alex Murray
