I arrived at Ken's at 4:45 p.m. (it opens at 5 p.m.), and there was already a mini line consisting of a young couple and toddler and some other dude. Within the next five minutes, it was around the corner and past the windows you see on the left of the building.

An arugula pie, at my friends Guddy and Belle's suggestion. I'm usually not into salad on pizza, and I was surprised that Guddy, a hearty Chicago native, recommended it, so I figured it had something going for it. It wasn't my favorite pie of the Ken's visit, but I'd order it again. Plus, as the first pizza stop of this mad trip, I was preemptively trying to get some greens into my itinerary.
- Derrick
Of course we did a Margherita. I want to sample a plain, stripped-down pie at all the places in addition to a pie that is considered the place's specialty. As longtime Slice readers know, I've found the Marghertia or a plain cheese pizza a good way to benchmark a pizzeria's performance. You can more easily taste the flavor of the crust, sauce, and cheese. And Ken's Margherita didn't...

That sausage pizza looks like it's the business.

I'm not sure I want an artisan pizza; I prefer pepperoni. How much artisan do they put on it anyways?

"All soups are bicycle-delivered to soupetarians (aka customers) at their homes and offices in Portland. We have three wonderful delivery folks, each of whom makes about 50 bicycle soup deliveries a day. We adjust our routes often to be as efficient as possible. Between that and the changing cycling weather, time to chat with customers during deliveries, and en-route bike repairs, we give you a big window of time when we'll deliver your tasty soup."

When I worked downtown. There was a company that delivered soups and sandwiches to the buildings. It was wild. They had the stuff on a little cart on the back of the bike, then that unhooked so they can push it into the building. I wonder if they're still around.

I like the idea of Portland, but I have yet to visit. Well, at least til January. I hope I like it. :)
- Derrick
Portland is a very livable city - from my time there (college) - but it was too small for me.

"Portland is a city of carnophiles. And as the weekend crowds attest, Laurelhurst Market is their new shrine—equal parts American brasserie, butcher counter, lunchtime sandwich shop, and neighborhood diner. The menu boasts enough price points to make dining a joy for both prince and pauper. There’s even a vegetable or two. Unlike its wallet-wringing West Side steak-house peers, Laurelhurst asks $20 or less for many of its entrées. It’s a steak house for the rest of us—and our favorite new restaurant of 2009."

*sigh* I have yet to have real ramen in a restaurant. Just last weekend I told the hubby we need to find a ramen restaurant and go there...
- Cheryl Jones
Yes you do...and now I'm off to Toshi's.
- Alex Scoble
Toshi's is good stuff if you don't mind the slow service. They are always understaffed. Two waitpersons doesn't cut it for them apparently. I'd say it's worth the slow service, but your mileage may vary.
- Alex Scoble
Worth it for ramen at least...their sushi isn't the best. If you want sushi, go to Tokyo, which is just a bit north on 185th.
- Alex Scoble
They're near this apartment I'm looking at. It was like walking into a Twilight Zone episode. The chairs are school desks, there's tributes to Kenny Rogers everywhere, the donuts have cereal as toppings, and the music is like the worst music imaginable. Also, it's painted magenta.
- Mark Trapp
What do you think they do for those three hours they aren't open?
- Michelle Marie Miller
I'm not sure I want to know. Maybe that's when Kenny Rogers and Isaac Hayes come to sprinkle their magic donut magic in the holes.
- Mark Trapp
Hey a lot of thought went into making those holes...
- Mark Forman
LOL, Actually, you're inviting the actual dudes Dave and Buster, so no "S" at all
- Matthew DeVries
No, Dave and Buster's is a place and a brand...I was referring to the brand name. I wish that Dave and Buster's would open up a Dave and Buster's in the PDX area.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Matthew, actually Alex is inviting Dave and some unidentified item belonging to Buster.
- John E. Bredehoft
Sorry, I had to delete it. I was trying to be funny and left out a few words. LMAO I couldn't even fix it because I realized I had no idea what I was even trying to say after that.

What the heck is up with Portland's mayor Sam Addams? Now he's embroiled in a scandal because he didn't make payments on his house on time...and this is the guy who's running Portland? WTF. Is there a lemon law for politicians? If not, this guy shows that there ought to be.
No lemon law for politicians. Look at our last president, Nixon, Grant, and... oh jeez, never mind. I could be at this all night. :)
- Dan Messer
Well there oughta be, Dan...and yeah, Derrick...He's going to make it that much harder for other gay politicians to succeed in getting elected to major offices. Not cool...A complete lamer.
- Alex Scoble
If he wasn't gay, he would have been thrown out of office over that affair with a young intern thing. It's just like with Obama...can't have any real recriminations because he's the first openly gay mayor of a major city.
- Dawn
The last thing I want is Sam Adams gone from City Hall. He's too entwined in how we get things done in this city. I never liked Vera but he spent 12 years in her administration and he knows which way the wind blows. If we end up with someone diametrical opposed to the culture that has been nurtured in that office, I'm afraid we'll lose our way and squander what we've developed over that...

No wonder the people who would really do the best job in government stay out of politics - they don't want their personal lives to be subject to this level of scrutiny and righteous indignation. The more you expect your elected representatives to be flawless, the more you are going to be disappointed by the fact that they're not.
- Chris
I'm not shooting for flawless, I'm shooting for merely responsible and dependable.

I'm impressed Alex - Looks like at least one geek got a workout today!! :)

Which is before and which is after? o_O (j/k ;)
- Jemm
Looks like you have a fescue, which means it's actually best kept at about 3 inches and not mowed as frequently as other types. Less mowing = win.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
yeah i keep mine at 4". do we have a lawn and garden room?
- Carlos Ayala
Is that the entire yard? Looks like just the right size to maximize the enjoyment of cutting the grass without it being a chore. At my last house, we had a yard with grass, but it was too small to maneuver the lawnmower around well, and it was more of a chore than enjoyment.
- Andy Bakun
That's the entire front yard just about, Andy. Back yard is about the same size.
- Alex Scoble
If I didn't mow mine each week I would grow a jungle.
- Bob Blunk
I have no grass. Area around house is all groundcover stuff, some ornamental grass and mulch. I miss walking with bare feet over freshly cut lawn but not enough to plant some. I had to do all inside and outside work at old house and I hated mowing.
- Janet
dude....cmon......3 weeks between mowing? my dad used to make me mow the lawn every 2 hours.....
- Chris Greene
sorry, two weeks. you're still a lazy f%# because i happen to know that this weekend you were inside the house playing video games like a dink.
- Chris Greene
We saw it again tonight. Did you get the short feature Partly Cloudy before it? We did tonight, but last week when we saw it the first time, there was no short feature.
- Joey Gibson
Alex, is the 3D version worth it? Is it any different? I have never watched a 3D movie and I'm skeptical.
- Manuel Mas
Yeah, Joey, we saw Partly Cloudy...cute short. The 3D technology is very good, is it worth it? It adds a coolness factor, but I'm not sure it's worth 40-50% extra per ticket.
- Alex Scoble
If they show the short in the non-3D version, I'd say it's not worth really it. It wasn't as cool as the 3-D in Coraline.
- Alix Whitmire
Alix, everything was in 3D, even the previews.
- Alex Scoble
No, I know. :) Joey said he didn't see the short the first time, I thought maybe they weren't showing the short at the non-3-D shows. The short, IMO, is worth the 3-D ticket price, but the 3-D itself was not. :D
- Alix Whitmire
We saw it in 3D both times, at the same theater, but the first time we didn't get the short. We *did* get the Toy Story 3 trailer the first time and not the second, but since that's available online, I would rather have had the short. Seems like by not showing it in all theaters, they're ripping some people off.
- Joey Gibson
Joey, that's awful. I always really look forward to the shorts, and this one was especially awesome.
- Alix Whitmire
I agree, Joey...I'm clueless as to why they would show the short only during some showings and in some theaters. It should be shown at all showings and in all theaters.
- Alex Scoble
Bought some wine at The Wine Cellar in Portland on Cornell today. The owner, Erin, is a hoot and makes it a lively place. We went there because she bought too much of some wines and was having an "oopsy" sale. http://www.badgirlwines.com/
I don't get how this group thing works. We have to post directly to the group to appear in the group feed? Seems to me the group feed should be a feed of the members' activity.
You can post directly to the group AND to your "My Feed" at the same time, Kathleen. Then whether someone sees it on your feed or the group feed and comments in either place those comments show up in both places. It's very cool.

Ate a buttermilk bar from Sesame Doughnuts near HWY 10 and Scholls Ferry tonight and it was delicious! For those not in to making the trek downtown to Voodoo Doughnuts, this place is pretty darn tasty and also open 24 hours.
I opened this room up in the 'real-time' view and stared at it for at least 90 minutes before falling asleep. I woke up the next day and nothing had changed. I think it's broken.
Indoor or outdoor? Depending on your venue/style, I know a photographer (looks at self...)
- Aaron B. Hockley
Hopefully outdoor with a good view. That is a camera in your twavatar, isn't it?
