i can't comment on blog (error something) so I do here: I guess many companies will fear for negative comments, but they should fear for NO comments at all :) - gluca - [mini]marketing
indeed, that might be the case for many sites - on the TypePad comment system, for some reason, some users find it hard to comment there... I submitted tons of tickets, but so far, no resolution. They usually want to know exactly what happens, have screen shots, etc. I think that secretly they'd like us to tell them how ti fix it, too ;) - Valeria Maltoni
SideWiki does not -- as some pundits have claimed -- liberate conversation from corporate websites. It simply moves it to within a new web service -- one owned by Google, a very large corporation. Further, it displays the entirety of whatever is being "liberated" from private sites. Doesn't matter if it's copyrighted or if the content creator objects. I expect SideWiki will be challenged as a derivative work. In any case, let's not confuse this project with actual data portability or social altruism. - Chris Baskind
Chris, is this much different than having a FriendFeed conversation automatically show-up in a sidebar? We've seen discussion about "stealing comments" before... I think it's bull. As for moving data "into" Google: Google has quite some efforts for dataportability going on... I expect a user can backup their comments to another service as they please. Likewise, all my FriendFeed comments are automatically pulled into Backtype. - Meryn Stol
I see it also has some similarities to Diigo and other annotation web services... These have existed for ages... I just think Google repackages this a bit, with better UI and such. I really don't see the problem of it. The big difference is Google Toolbar's reach. Many people don't even know of Diigo probably. - Meryn Stol
I expect that friendfeed, facebook and twitter will start very soon with similar tools, that simulate visual integration with connected and commented sites. So, I prefer openness of Google to FB walls... - gluca - [mini]marketing
linked this thread in the TypePad comments - it's very sad that the native software would not offer integration, given the developments we're discussing... probably why more and more bloggers are moving to WP :) - Valeria Maltoni
right! WP FTW :) - Susan Beebe
It sounds interesting but since it requires the use of Google Toolbar I think I'll pass. I don't have room for any toolbars. - SuezanneC Baskerville
I work for a big humanitarian organization and I think we have a certain responsibility towards our users. This includes that we don’t allow spammy comments or comments that are obscene or racist. With SideWiki that might happen, and be visible to the user who has Sidewiki enabled, without us being able to do anything about it. Also: If I have no control over the comments, how can I... more... - Timo Luege
That's a very valid concern, Timo. I have no idea of what Google plans to do with it, but on a first blush, the add on bar is distracting, almost "rude" as it intrudes on an existing page flow - I was never a fan of add on bars, whether they come from left field or are at the bottom of blogs. Esthetically, they detract from the user experience and make more visual clutter/graffiti. - Valeria Maltoni

Conversation of the Day: Facebook is the New Address Book - http://www.steverubel.com/convers...
Conversation of the Day: Facebook is the New Address Book
does the gmail sync with the iPhone not work for you? - metalerik
metalerik: I have thousands of contacts in Gmail. They go out of date at a pretty rapid rate. For some reason people keep their Facebook contacts up to date. - Robert Scoble
oh ok, makes sense especially at those numbers. Plus, my friends don't have access to my gmail contacts to keep their info up to date. That circles back to mixing different kinds of friends on one service. - metalerik
Facebook is a great addition to any address book, but not a replacement. Once everyone has facebook it will replace the address book. Almost everyone has a phone number, but tens of millions of people are still without facebook in North America alone. I admit this is rapidly changing as Facebooks user base continues to rise. - Garin Kilpatrick
The problem is Facebook is currently a closed Network so you can not searh it's content from Google so not really a good address book if you ask me. - Rob Cairns
Rob, it's an address book for your friends, not the white/yellow pages. - Andre P. Siregar
Palm thought of this when they developed Synergy for WebOS. This was a big advantage over other mobile OS. Then Facebook developed the 3.0 app for iPhone while not committing to enhance their app on WebOS (http://www.palminfocenter.com/news...). No more advantage for WebOS - Andre P. Siregar
I'm in 100% agreement with this. I use a Blackberry, but feel the same way. People keep their info up to date on Facebook for the most part and it sync's to my phone. So do events and birthdays. LOVE it. - frank barry
I do agree with your proposal but only for personal (F&F) use. Most of my corporate contacts are 40+ age and they're still getting used to the Facebook stuff (I'm living down south Equator Line, and it's more likely a cab driver had a Facebook account that a senior o C level manager -with the exception of people working in IT departments of course-). Hopefully they'll update their phones frequently too so that I won't have to track them down all the time. - Marco ILLESCAS
I agree with Scoble that Gmail is really missing the boat here. - Steve Rubel
Robert Scoble: If you set up the Google Sync on the iPhone as described here: http://www.google.com/mobile... then only the contacts in your "My Contacts" on the contacts list in GMail gets synced. It does take a little bit of initial setup to work well, but after you get it set up, it works brilliantly. When I sync my Facebook to my iPhone, the photos and such that I put on the phone then get auto-synced back to GMail as well via the Google Sync. Very clever. - Otto
Well, as otto just said, I'm using Google Sync for iPhone. Any changes i make are instantly synced back to Google. Its also easaier to manage and merge contacts from Google's interface and sync them back to the iPhone. More groups would be a nice addition ( instead of having to search for contacts not in the synced group). - Roberto Bonini
Syncing groups would be a *fantastic* addition to Google Sync. The iPhone supports contact groups natively, it just doesn't offer any interface to put contacts into groups by default (you can find apps that will do this in the app store.. ABContacts Lite comes to mind). - Otto
Oh, one more thing that's very cool about Google Sync: It'll sync your Google Calendars to the calendar app on the iPhone. You can choose which calendars to sync, and Google Contacts recently added a birthday/anniversary feature, making an automatic calendar out of your contact's birthdays and such. That syncs to the iPhone as well. - Otto
Nope. I can say definitively that Facebook will never be my address book, nor will any other online service. I may have bits and pieces on various networks, but to hold the master/superset, I trust only native access on a device I own and control. (not to mention how horrifying it would be, to me and my family and friends, to cough up my entire social graph to be pimped out for commercialization all in one place) - LogEx
Facebook is not search able by Google. The content inside Google is closed. So how is this going to be an address book? Until they make the content searchable that will not happen - Rob Cairns
I've been using Google sync for about a month now, ever since I got Google Voice and it's worked flawlessly so far. I'm amazed at how fast it pushes updates to the iPhone. It's almost instantaneous. I haven't tried the FaceBook integration yet and I'm reluctant to do so since I don't see any real benefit at this point. - Mike Elliott
With this script (from Googler Brad Fitzpatrick) http://brad.livejournal.com/2398409..., you can sync your Facebook contacts with your Google Contacts. It works perfectly (merging existing contacts), it's very fast, very secure (Google API). Just awesome. - Jérôme Flipo
Plaxo is a good alternative too. True, not everyone is there, lacking the network effect Facebook has. But integration with Address Book or Outlook is great and I find that people also maintain their info up-to-date. Thanks for those who mentioned the Google Sync, still using MobileMe and didn't want any additional sync to break everything. Might try it. - Paul Papadimitriou
Yeah, I have a Plaxo account. A lot of my friends do too, but they never update their Plaxo information. In the end it's more than just the technology. People actually _use_ Facebook. Facebook is wise to capitalize this and strategize towards being your portal on the internet. It's something that Plaxo could never dream of. - Andre P. Siregar from email
Interesting topic because I had just migrated over from my OutLook/Palm combo to a Google Contacts (Gmail) / iPhone combo. The reason why I wanted to do this is because I think it is finally time to move my contacts from a physical machine to the cloud. The sync between Google Contacts and Calendar with the iPhone via Google Sync is quite seamless and I am getting to like it more and more everyday. - Christopher Yeo
I use gmail/blackberry combo - the sync is almost perfect. Rather than use Highrisehq - I'm now trying to improvise gmail contacts+labels to do the same thing. - Jose Paul Martin
Jose, the problem is that you can't search for contact groups, i.e you can't list contacts that are in two different groups/labels - e.g search for [group:(work AND nyc]. You can't do that either in Facebook. If you have a workaround for Google Contacts, please share! - Jérôme Flipo
Just discovered a way to use Google Sync to get my Facebook Events automatically put into my iPhone. First, import your FB events into Google Calendar as a new calendar using these instructions: http://gr33ndata.blogspot.com/2007... then just set up Google Sync to sync that calendar as well. - Otto

Posterous also provides a way to control and delegate the posting activity to other email addresses - its just a pity it uses the delegated's services config by default with no option to use the delegator's instead - so the distribution is not maintained according to the blog but according to who makes the post instead - both options would be perfect - Nicholas Paul Gordon
Nicholas -- we've been talking about adding this capability as a 'group profile' that you can set up for a particular blog. It'll be coming in a future release. - Garry Tan

Robert, you can easily control the flow. Here's how i do it: all mails go to posterous+facebook@posterous.com. The Feed linked into FF via RSS import. Once FF picks it up. it sends these to Twitter. This avoids dupes. - Steve Rubel
The problem with Posterous to FriendFeed is that you'll need to reshare it again if you want to import to any FF groups. After a lengthy trial of Posterous I found FF to be more powerful in the end :-\ - CannonGod

Posterous is just a great hub to send your content out to the world. to your WP blog, youtube, flickr, twitter, fb and more and they keep adding services. At the same time you have all your content backed up in your GMail - Kahlil Lechelt
Posterous is so flexible and how they handle media files is just killer. It can be simple or more complex depending on your needs. Love it. - Gus

So how goes the posterous vs tumblr competition? I haven't seen the draw of poseterous yet, although I like Steve's usage. - Mark Essel from iPhone
@rob you can post via email, web or bookmarklet. once your post is posted you can edit it again on the web. it all very straight fwd and easy. I dont think that they generate static html. You gotta ask them help@posterous.com Their customer service is very good and they mostly respond within hours. - Kahlil Lechelt
@rob just write an email to post@posterous.com and try it out! Play around with it. - Kahlil Lechelt
@Mark: re: posterous vs. tumblr. basically it comes down to what you prefer. Personal taste. Posterouses focus is to make blogging and distributing content as easy as possible and they achieve that through email and sending the content out through all APIs available. Also what I find killer is that if you put a link to a youtube vid in the email it embeds that automatically same with many other videosites. - Kahlil Lechelt
love the new Pic Posterous app for Iphone - johnpiercy
I love Posterous I chose it over tumblr because I liked the design much better and the ease of use and the focus on distributing content. Posterous also has a very interesting community that shares great content including a lot of beautiful pictures. - Kahlil Lechelt

@Ouriel do you know you can use Google Analytics with your Posterous? Custom design is in beta testing now. - Kahlil Lechelt
@Robert Scoble: You cant do everything but Posterous can do everything for you. They even distribute to Friendfeed and Facebook Pages. - Kahlil Lechelt
PicPosterous lets you share video that's longer than the email limit. That's handy. - Tom Landini
Tom: Good point! Posterous hosted videos play directly on the web page on the iPhone. Thats also awesome. - Kahlil Lechelt
Posterous for a private site is where it really shines. I have both, public and private, and the private one is amazing. Try it. - Dominic Jones
Ended up ditching my personal WP site for posterous & loving it. @Rob the ease of posting and tweaking how things are disbursed is incredible. You can pick and choose per post which other sites you would like updated. The multiple photo upload is sweetomatic and they embed just about anything in a snap. I'm a fan and I thought I would live and die by WP. - suecosby
Right now, Posterous = email in + tumblr-like blog + ping.fm-like out (duplicated content I actually find annoying). With more ways to automatically import, better support for discussions, and truly custom themes that I could host on my own subdomain (with my own HTML/CSS/JavaScript), it would have a lot of potential. - LogEx
LogEx: Yes I would also love to see better support for discussions. For now I am using Backtype. You can host your posterous under your own subdomain already though. - Kahlil Lechelt
Posterous is fantastic, Tumblr too but one is mad to give up a self hosted blog in place those services. Respectively of course Steve Rubel. - Benjamin Taylor
@Benjamin: Why? - Kahlil Lechelt
I understand if you want to host your blog yourself if you are a brand or a company. But for your personal blog? I don't see any value in selfhosting when you have Posterous. - Kahlil Lechelt
I just hope you're not serving spam. - Mistletoe Glen
I've found that views on my Posterous posts have dropped like a ton of bricks. At first (a few weeks ago) I was getting 400-600 views per post. Last week it was more like 100 per post, now I'm hardly going over 10. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol whats your posterous url? - Kahlil Lechelt
Kahlil, I have a few here: http://posterous.com/people..., latest posts have about 30-40 so a little pick up. - Kol Tregaskes
@kol interesting that your view plunged like that. mine are fairly constant and slowly growing. are you using analytics to analyze your traffic? - Kahlil Lechelt
No, not analysed the traffic. - Kol Tregaskes
We are actually crowd-sourcing our blog on Mugasha. Mugasha Aux is hosted on Posterous with custom theme (still in private beta). The cool thing about this blog is that the community and the Artists can post content on the blog. Artists can promote their music and events and fans can post stores about events or other music related things. We are terrible bloggers here at Mugasha so we decided why not ask the community to help us out. Posterous is setup really well to hand this. http://aux.mugasha.com/ - Akshay Dodeja
Akshay: Wow that is awesome!!! Kiler use of posterous. Nice! - Kahlil Lechelt
So you can created themes for Posterous? - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol: Yes theming for Posterous is coming soon. It is in beta and only for a limited amount of users - Kahlil Lechelt
Cool! - Kol Tregaskes
Posterous is great - I use it all the time for feeding FF and facebook with pictures - the iPhone "picture album" app is a winner too - can't find anything wrong with posterous myself - I love it - Nicholas Paul Gordon from iPhone
That's definitely cool... but if they're still going to have that white block in the header with the Posterous logo that http://aux.mugasha.com has, looks like Tumblr will still have them beat in that area. - Ken Sheppardson
@Ken: True. That thing will mostly not mix with a custom design. It's like two brand competing on a site which is always a bad idea. Also the links and the tags and so forth on the left look a little clumsy. - Kahlil Lechelt
@Ken Actually we decided to leave The Posterous bar on top to give them credit :) You can totally style that in any way you want. - Akshay Dodeja
Nice, Akshay. Good to hear. Looking forward to seeing them go live with customization. - Ken Sheppardson
Robert: was today the day? - Ken Power
Ken, Akshay, Kahlil -- we've got a revision to that top bar coming. You can expect as good an experience with Posterous as with Tumblr for full customization. Better, if we do it right. Thanks for all your support. - Garry Tan
Hey Akshay, Garry: thanks for the info. I would never expect less than a good experience with Posterous :) - Kahlil Lechelt
I started on posterous thanks to being talked into it (http://pingmicro.com/postero...). Hilariously, so far I don't see it as a challenger to tumblr at all. For me Tumblr is about fragments, scrapbooking, and its "genre" posting styles help with this. Posterous for me is an engine to conventionally blog (as opposed to microblog) to multiple sites, and... more... - Paul Greer
Posterous is only about 14 months old. It has a small, ambitious and responsive team. This service is only going to get better. The unique email posting/auto posting is the key to it. Early days for a service on the cusp. - Judd6149

Johni, they're definitely starting to take the right steps. I don't want to publish from my Facebook Page though, so this kind of scares me. - Jesse Stay
The way they should have done it is similar to Google Reader's "share to" option. They could add Twitter in the drop-down, along with each Facebook Page you administer, and enable you to select more than one. - Jesse Stay

Do you have all your followers here in FB as well ?look at Robert he has now just 2000 there as he couldnt control the feed /// I cant see yet the the change in FB maybe with some more live FF apps there :-)) I will feel better.. - Johni Fisher
Johni, I think FB is much easier to manage people you don't necessarily know if they want to be your friends. You can control almost every piece of it with Friend lists and privacy controls. So I can choose exactly who sees what I want them to see. FriendFeed can't quite do that, and especially not Twitter. - Jesse Stay
So no, I will continue letting people add me as a friend. They may not show up in my news feed, or see all my updates or other information, but at least they're given a glimpse of what I publish, via just one account. - Jesse Stay
Actually, I have a great idea - maybe something will show up tonight enabling what I want it to do. :-) - Jesse Stay
if you dont want to share all I cant understand why to be in a social network ,we are there to share all with no limits (my opinion),the only way is not to mix friends with social media news, experts etc .As I am sure that my last girlfriend :-))will not be happy to read any news about a new social app ,what should I do ? :-))) - Johni Fisher
Johni, you don't speak for everyone. Maybe you, but not me. Everyone holds some things back. Some people have only small groups they want to communicate with. It's all a tool. Why make it only one way? - Jesse Stay
I agree ,, but I hate to work on that and to make these groups etc ,, I am a very late social adaptor and entered to this world with a big social platform development here in Argentina ,all day long I cant visit this world as I have other day by day issues ,I enjoy any sec of my Internet world trying just to learn ,maybe you or Robert and others are much more prof and you see this world... more... - Johni Fisher
Thank you Johni, it's an honor - Jesse Stay
Jesse I will send you next week our social Radio solution to review and to get yr opinion,, remember the name ALLYSSEN - Johni Fisher
interesting except that in my case pages are fed with tweets so pretty much the other way around. Since what I implemented is rather high maintenance I'll keep it for later use though, thank you for sharing. - lelapin
