I tweeted a reply - but actually would have been better to comment here. The traditional media are generally the worst judge of the value or relevance when it comes to social media. Enduring a spell in the traditional media spotlight is what all successful social media concepts will have to pass through in order to reach maturity. Hype from trad media means nothing - is usually just a distraction.

@richard, hype over social networks from both traditional media or blogs mean nothing. if somebody truly wanted to talk about the future of the internet, they wouldn't be fixated on social media, period. social media is the new user driven content. we don't hear about that anymore do we? 'nuff said.

i think generalizations such as "trad media are the worst judge of the value social media" are wrong. Modern media, for as long as it is mainstream, resists change, newcomers, competition. Blogging was a no-entity till 2004. Now even most of NYC and other trad media journalists blog or twit. Whether Twitter will become new SL, we shall see. However, Twitter is more intutively appealing, simple and easier to capitalize on for businesses, giving it a potential to stick for awhile.

I'm not down with that report. SL problems were beyond hype, but more to do with the lack of ease to use it. Twitter certainly does not have that problem. I cna understand hype burn-out, but I don't foresee things going down the same way they did w/ SL. Now, of course, Twitter could screw it up big-time...

I have to agree with Doug H. SL and Twitter are polar opposites in terms of ease of use and the required time investment. This will have a big impact on Twitter's staying power.
