Okay, sped up the Eclipse install by using an EC2 Ubuntu mirror via apt-cacher-ng (nifty app!) on an EC2 server.
Downloading Karmic via bittorrent: reasonably fast. Installing Eclipse from regular Ubuntu repo: super slow, because of the Karmic release.
@BryantD, was thinking of SF Bay Area (or Japan!) or telecommute. But can consider Maryland, for the right kind of gig. :-)
