A Promise: If someone creates an twitter app which automatically DM's anyone you sends you an autoDM when you follow them (and optionally unfollows them)....I promise I will do everything i can to promote it on as many tech sites as possible.
how would it detect at Auto DM? Maybe an algorithm that factors in the word usage, the presence of a link, and the amount of time accrued since your follow to make a best guess?
- Mattb4rd
I'm playing around with it now. Quite nice; has great potential.
- Brent Newhall
Yeah! it's not working very well! Waiting for better version!
- netvista
The streams are still separate. I'd like to see an option to interleave FF and Twtr and Identi.ca.
- Cliff Gerrish
Yes, that would be perfect. all in one window, tied together. but a database nightmare, I imagine.
- Karoli
Separate streams are a nightmare from which I'm trying to awake.
- Cliff Gerrish
Hello Everyone, it's great that you want this feature! It's coming up in the next weeks. Thanks for the amazing feedback.
- SHHHE
There's something very important I forgot to tell you. Don't cross the streams. It would be bad. Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light. Total protonic reversal.
- Ken Sheppardson
Actually, it looks like you can mix it up. There's a MIX button that allows you to choose which services you want to mix in. Still kinda sketchy, but it's a foot in the door.
- Cliff Gerrish
Cliff, you're ahead of us! You got it, that's exactly what I was talking about.
- SHHHE
Nice, so let's work in some de-duping-- oh and track. And then you'll be running along side FF. And that level of competition is a real good thing.
- Cliff Gerrish
Cliff, you're very kind. De-duping is in the radar, we are working on it.
- SHHHE
Cliff, you can track. Create a stack, Eg: Twitter/Everyone, search for a keyword in it and let the stream play.
- SHHHE
I've just started using it, and it's quite amazing. i think it's found most of my other accounts, I'm just having a little trouble with one. Somw of the twiitter feature are really interesting. What is meant by mixing the streams?
- Michael Fidler
from twhirl
Michael, 'Mix' builds a stream combining posts from several social networks.
- SHHHE
Lots of bugs to work out, but I am definitely into the concept ... good stuff!
- Nadine Schaeffer
"when great teachers can make more than Kobe and Lebron, we'll have something. I totally agree and said it this way in my post: "These teachers can make a lot of money and they should. They are the best at what they do. But our education system is not set up like a star system. It should be.""
- Fred Wilson
You know someone is gonna say, "That's great, but the Vice Presidency isn't about talking to little kids." And it's those people who ruin our country.
- Eric Geller
Nice job. Glad he asked the 'right' questions....
- Craig Mische
One weird thing: it actually felt like Tom Peters was off on a mental island. I respect Tom's work a lot. Very rah rah and got my thinking charged in the late 90s. But did you see it that way, too?
- Chris Brogan
I only saw a combined 5 minutes or less, but I think Seth really "spoke up" - and was on-point. I did like Tom's comment on "decency" though. There is not enough of that in the world... I'm hoping social media will help us all get a little more love ;-)
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
ditto - TP's comment on decency was spot on.
- Valeria Maltoni
Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency -- but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation.
- Robert Scoble
lol, I cant wait to hear what olbermann has to say about this
- Kyle Weller
interesting showing some polls are now within the margin of error, including the zogby poll which is now within 6
- Jonathan Jesse
Jonathan: if you talk to pollsters, though, they say the actual results aren't that close. The polls that are closer aren't using cell phone only voters, like me, which tend to break younger and more educated and which are breaking for Obama big time.
- Robert Scoble
A great read. Amazing how much interest there was in Europe while i was there about our election. Everyone I talked to over the past two weeks was scared of McCain/Palin and rooting for Obama/Biden. Fascinating to see how citizens of other countries took such an interest in a foreign election. US citizens are so far removed from such affairs abroad. It was good to see the interest and concern.
- Jim Goldstein
No one calls me which is good anyway. If they did, I might not tell them what I really felt, as pollsters and telemarketeers calling get me pissed anyway.
- Ian May
I was in Europe in April/May for a month and everyone was interested. Many doubted that Americans would ever elect a Black President. I told them to "just watch us - it will happen this time!"
- Bora Zivkovic
If the obama campaign called me I would be happy about that
- Kyle Weller
Oh wow, a media outlet endorsing 0bama. How surprising!
- Spencer
Not surprising at all - since the choice is between a candidate and a caricature.
- Bora Zivkovic
Actually the choice is a marketing campaign, which 0bama has been good at, but still has no substance.
- Spencer
So, you've gone and read the articles on his website with the specifics and still believe that? It's okay to say no substance if you've read and feel that way, but if not, it's pretty silly.
- Karoli
Anybody can write marketing materials, look at 0bama's past, look at his voting record, that is more telling than what some marketing strategist posted on a website.
- Spencer
Voting record, and record of bills introduced and/or passed, which for a senator with 2 years, is quite impressive. If nothing else, the guy is a workaholic. I'd say the conduct of his campaign also speaks to management/governing style.
- Karoli
4 years. I was living in Chicago in 2004 when Obama rose through a crowded Dem primary field to absolutely dominate the election. Even before Ryan's scandal, he was up by 35 points. I remember seeing the first "Obama" signs at the Wilmette Metra station and not knowing if that was a first or last name.
- Dave Slusher
Aliza Sherman (who lives in Alaska) has been blogging and showing photos on Flickr about plenty of people in Alaska who do not like Gov. Palin—in fact, they've been protesting and exposing interesting facts about her as Governor, and otherwise. You may want to read Aliza and look at her Flickr stream.:-) Her twitter acct. is @alizasherman.

Anyone got other favorite Flickr photographers? Is there a way to search for other people with 1+/5+/10+ million views? I've only learned this morning how to use PicLens and Sizes to see bigger Flickr pictures, so quite the Flickr novice here... Any help would be much appreciated. How do Flickr users find other photographers?
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell - I typically use the 'friends' features of Flickr much more than any search. I usually just look at people I like, then look at their friends for the same styles of photos. It was worked for me in the past at least.
- Bryan Pearson
Bryan - Thanks for the help. I haven't tried the "friends" feature of Flickr yet. I'll give it a shot...
- Mitchell Tsai
Wow! Thanks Thomas for the article. Have to find time to read the last few years of your blog. Your articles are so good... Great insights (1) Scout (2) Archive (9) Flickr Toys. See http://friendfeed.com/e... for a partial summary. I'm headed out for a walk & some photos. The birds are calling. Yesterday saw amazing fireflies, but couldn't get any decent photos without a bigger lens and more sensitive camera. :-(
- Mitchell Tsai
I love ko-knia's work - and I was lucky enough to book him to shoot my (edit: upcoming) wedding in August.
- Brian Glick
Brian - You are one lucky guy! How was the wedding? Do you have pics on-line?
- Mitchell Tsai
Sorry - wasn't clear - my wedding is coming up in August, and I booked him earlier this year.
- Brian Glick
God, I love this photo. I should revisit my likes more often. Turns out I have pretty good taste.
- Alexei Tolkachev
Alexei: You're lucky you've got under 400 likes/comments. I would love to revisit the stuff I liked in March, but with 12,900, I can't see most of them. :-( I wish I could see "stuff I liked in March", "stuff I liked in April", etc...
- Mitchell Tsai
I love how all the pictures are just called 'kid'.
- Tim Hoeck
Tim: I wonder if it's a privacy thing with the kids names?
- Mitchell Tsai
@Mitchell Tsai Links to your imaginary friends will not work for anyone else by you, shame really I as I would like to share mine too. I've added all my favourite Flickrers to my Imaginary friends and now used the new FF and added them to a friends list. So I can go to this list and search my imaginary friends ONLY. Dream :-D Now I just want to see published photos only
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol: Thanks for the list of your favorite Flickr photographers. My list is much shorter http://friendfeed.com/e... Maybe we could make a public FF room & add the Flickr feeds for everyone...
- Mitchell Tsai
Sounds a good idea, I'll have a play with a new room in a tick.
- Kol Tregaskes
from NoiseRiver
@Mitchell Tsai (mitchelltsai): What I've done is create another room for my personal favourite Flickrers (Flickr Photography at http://friendfeed.com/rooms...) and then added that FF feed to the Best of Flickr room. I've added a few Flickrers (manually entering their Flickr feeds - means the room displays their published work only) but will adds more over the next week or so. For the moment I've set it to admin posting only, so anyone who wants to join and post let me know.
- Kol Tregaskes
from NoiseRiver
Kol: Thanks for the Best of Flickr room, and sharing your favorite photographers with us. I'm going to spend some time locating photographer's home websites & portfolios...and post them to my account. At some point, we may want to create a Favorite-Photographer-Portfolio room, or something like that. How about a vi.sualize.us room? The pics are imported into FF much larger than the tiny Flickrs.
- Mitchell Tsai
Frankly, I've had enough of public stupidity and hysteria. If I'm taking pictures, examining benchmarks, or geocaching, inevitably, someone will start questioning me or calling the police. If I'm in a public area and not doing anything criminal, mind your own business.
- Morton Fox
Aren't the TWIP guys coming out with a "Photography is Not a Crime" t-shirt soon?
- Andy Roth
It's just a mock up so far. I took John Worthington's idea and whipped this up real quick last night. If TWiP does not make them, maybe I with John's approval/participation could have some made up and make them available to everyone who wants one for a reasonable cost.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Great to hear you're enjoying! Have you tried the beta?
- Cooliris
I haven't tried out the beta yet, should do that :) I love how it easily integrates with the social sites I visit (Flickr, Youtube, etc.)
- Michael Yurechko
7 interactive, floating sculptures will be taking a trip down the Hudson River for "Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea" http://laughingsquid.com/swimmin...
I must agree with Jasmin. Is this really the right ad for this demographic?
- AJ Kohn
It's not like you can set out on a 2 year journey to 'discover' that Vista doesn't actually suck. And Columbus died still thinking the earth was flat, so how does that figure in to the metaphor?
- Kevin Fox
AJ, great idea on the Fail Whale theme. I added a second targeted ad around the concept of Microsoft looking for Twitter's lost fail whale. http://thomashawk.com/2008...
- Thomas Hawk
I think this is smart. They can't directly go up against Apple on "coolness", and they're not. This is more of an end run. In a way, it's similar to the Think Different (sic) campaign: popular wisdom says that Vista is bad, but those who are dispensing the popular widsom, though well dressed, are uninformed.
- Jon Galloway
i guess i'm super old school... in my early days of modem surfing (circa late 80s), this ad would essentially have windows saying: it is cool to illegally copy us!
- Rob Reed
I've already been through this with some other people the FriendFeed thread mentioned by Alan Le above. I'm not going through it again but I will say that I think it's a great ad campaign and I wish Microsoft the best of luck with it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
the campaign appears real; the crap on the bottom seems to have been added by somebody in photoshop. I like this quote from the zdnet article: "Vista is now actually better than its reputation. That’s a marketing issue"
- Paul Whitaker
Alright so this is the real ad: http://www.tothepc.com/pic... -- They're trying to say "Everyone thought the world was flat" saying "Everything thinks Windows is the same, but get the real facts about Vista, etc, etc," or something like that. Who knows, it's not very straight forward.
- Aaron Myers
are you sure that they are not just trying to say everyone should just be pirates because pirates are cool? ;)
- Thomas Hawk
Who messes with Pirates? Nobody, that's who.
- Kristopher Tate
I'm laughing because reading it out loud or in your head sounds stupid.
- Outsanity
Searching my registry for Spanish dubloons.
- Akiva Moskovitz
But if everyone is a pirate, then it wouldn't be cool anymore, because everyone is doing it. Thankfully, not everybody is a pirate, though, so it's still cool to be one. Argh!
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
I think the ad says everyone should drink Cutty Sark. Odd tack: if you don't love our product you're a blighted medieval-minded slug.
- Michael Markman
I think it's important that he has people who know the internet (it wouldn't be a good trait if he/she didn't do that, and I'd consider that behind the times) but I don't think the actual president needs to know how to do that. Frankly, there are a MUCH more important things that I feel the president should master than the web.... I might actually consider the president to be wasting time if he decided to take that task on just to take it on.
- Kate Brodock
from twhirl
The President will never need to use their own computer while in office; however, knowing how the web functions, its role in the economy, and how 90+% of the country uses it is very important in the 21stC
- Nicholas Molnar
from twhirl
Seriously... the president needs to pick good advisers and have experience in government. Hire someone to explain Facebook to him. The main decisions involve foriegn policy, not whether twitter is better than plurk.
- Soulhuntre
from twhirl
Nope. But he should understand Web/tech regulatory issues.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Wouldn't the President need to know how to use email to communicate with the White House staff?
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I think the President of the United States in the 21st century should be capable of operating a computer and making use of mainstream internet services.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Is pushing "The Button" considered computer use?
- Andrew Smith
they should know how to read e-mail & google.
- clarke thomas
I think a President does need to know how to use a computer. Question is, would he/she use a PC or a Mac
- Richie Escovedo
So, so many more important aspects of what makes someone a good leader for a whole nationt han whether they can surf the frickin' web.
- Soulhuntre
from twhirl
I think there are some very important issues that my grandma does not understand, because she doesn't understand computers and the web
- Charlie
from twhirl
Technology is already a big part of our lives and will only grow. If a President can't even operate a computer, they are out of touch with the people they represent. That's the truth.
- Shawn Farner
from twhirl
This is 2008, if you can't surf the web and do other basic tasks with a computer, you are out of touch in a big way. For most people, that doesn't matter. For the president, you don't get to be excused.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Each Human needs to know how to use a Web. Is President a Human?:)
- Igor Poltavskiy
Not sure if the president needs to know how to use the computer but I am pretty sure that he needs to know that he can't keep a war going for 100 years.
- Krishnan Subramanian
I would think that it can be expected that a Presidential candidate should have had the time and the willingness to have learned how to use a computer before the duties of the President PERHAPS make it irrelevant.
- Matthew Imakyure
from twhirl
Yes. Not having even basic computer skills in 2008 betrays a lack of curiosity and intellectual rigor.
- Chris Baskind
Although my vote would depend more on the vision and positions of a candidate, I think that to be in the position of the most powerful person on the earth, you would need to have at least a minimum amount of knowledge, not just about PC's and the internet BTW. Imagine Medvedev or Putin sending an IM message that goes lost without a reply :-)
- Marc Dierens
Of course. 80% of the country uses computers, and over 50% is on the Internet. It is a way of reaching his audience, the voters. It's now part of basic literacy skills. Does he have to spend the day online? Of course not.
- Francine Hardaway
Yes. I'll second Chris Baskind's comment.
- Eric Thompson
This is a dumb question and a non-issue. It should be: Can the Candidate function as an everyday American using the tools, institutions and opportunities available to everyday people?
- Andrew Feinberg
Andrew - Isn't that a bit harsh? There are no dumb questions? It is an issue whether or not you think it should be. To answer the question, I would like to see overall literacy and competency in my elected officials.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
No. I'm tired of the issue being parsed and based on videos and sound-bites when the underlying one is whether or not the candidate is aware of the issues that everyday Americans face. It's one thing to be driven around and have people take care of your correspondence, advise you, and speak for you. That's ok. But you still need to be able to drive a car to really understand traffic and fill up a gas tank to see the price. Remember George H.W. Bush at the grocery store in 1992?
- Andrew Feinberg
So by that logic, you would throw out McCain or Obama?
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Neither of which, I am pretty sure, fill up their own cars with gas.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Although (and I can't believe I'm having this conversation) Obama's filled his tank a lot more recently than McCain has. But yes, a leader ought to be reasonably clued into what his constituents are doing / how they are interacting, etc. McCain's cluelessness about the 'net is obvious and a bit troubling. Having said that, I was annoyed when MSM was giving McCain crap for saying he "watched" Drudge, implying that he was describing it the same way as a TV show. That was unfair, because a lot of us...
- Anthony Citrano
..would say we "watched" people online who we found interesting. I don't know whether McCain meant it that way or not, but I'm as sick of seeing people unfairly jump on McCain as I am the reverse. Let's stick to the real issues instead of this "gotcha" shit.
- Anthony Citrano
There are more important things to worry about, but not gonna lie.. if my grandma can figure it out, I'd definitely love to be confident that our president would be able to check his email in a dire situation.
- justine
The bigger issue is the one Andrew brought up. I want to know that the President has some basic understanding of the issues that will be coming up in the next 4-8 years. Those include amongst -many- others: mid-east politics, oil, stem-cells/genetic engineering, and yes regulatory issues surrounding the Internet. It's hard to deal with anything if you rely completely on your advisers.
- Steve Spalding
Steve: scratch Mideast politics, as well as information technology, as a domain in which John McCain possesses any expertise -- he doesn't even understand the differences between Shiites and Sunnis. Basically, Lieberman whispers into McCain's ear, and McCain produces garbled renditions with a single message: WAR, WAR, WAR! Scary, considering that the Iraq War is costing Americans trillions of dollars while playing perfectly into the hands of Muslim fundamentalists.
- Sean McBride
No, let him try to learn how to run a country first. Oops, silly me, ti's too late, he's leaving soon!
- Ian May
Yes, they do, it is an important issue, the internet is quickly becoming or currently is the major means of communication in the world a basic lack of understanding of such a tool of communication and commerce
- Justin Yost
Presidents have to know how to use computers & Internet. So they can understand how these tools can (have to) impact on the country and on the whole world's future (present!), regulation issues and so on.. a good balancing is required.. and it depends on the country in question. Presidents -have to- understand: they have to use them, and it is really important that they have good advisers.
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Thierry - McCain's advisers are dominated by the same neoconservatives who engineered the Iraq War. So not to worry.
- Sean McBride
Yes, for the same reasons that I would expect a political leader to know how to use a telephone.
- Andy Murdoch
Mostly, I think people want to continue being unaware of my site's existence. At least, I hope they do. If they don't, my last post there was a failure!

Chris you are spot on again. Much of my time on the (practical side of) the web is spent yelling "didn't anyone try this site as a prospective customer might?" It is often obvious (hotel site: rates, availability, facilities, nearby) yet countless sites, especially Flash sites swirl around and make it impossible to get satisfaction within a few minutes which is when I look elsewhere. The question you ask is the question every site owner needs to ask herself.
- randulo
Chris, I THINK that people come to my blog for different reasons. While it's mostly a personal blog I write about things that interest me; however, it is linked to my company website and it covers areas that dovetail with my professional life.
