Static. If there is an option to close the animation, I'm all over it.
- Yolanda
Static. Actually, with enough typographical strength, graphics are optional. :)
- Micah Wittman
Gee. I can't imagine why I keep railing against the use of Flash on Web sites. I'm with everyone else. Flash drives me crazy. I don't mind sites having dynamic content on their home pages, but I want to be able to control how quickly or slowly it changes.
- Curtiss Grymala
I just screenshoted this. I'll be sure to show it to any potential clients that want to obsessively use flash. Oh and Static 100%
- Joshua Schnell
If there's a compelling reason to use a dynamic display, I don't mind. For example, sports cars do not lend themselves to static displays. But even if a dynamic display is warranted - and it usually isn't - the dynamic content had better be short AND silent. (And the color saturation should be reasonable.)
- John E. Bredehoft
from fftogo
I use flashblock pretty heavily to cut that stuff out.
- Otto
from iPhone
I'm curious if Louis' question would elicit different results if asked on another platform. FriendFeed tends to skew a little tech. Maybe other audiences find the animation entertaining.
- John E. Bredehoft
from fftogo
i could say something really mean about a certain market segment, but i won't.
- Joe Silence is not dead
John, I asked on Twitter and it hit here. But yes, this is good data.
- Louis Gray
Static. If it's a splash page and there's no "Skip" link, I'll often close it. And don't even get me STARTED on pages that start playing sound!
- Ladybug Heather
Static. Come to think of it, all of the sites I visit regularly lack excess animations.
- Jemm
Minimalism is the key. I don't care about ads, as long as they're not annoying and they don't distract me from the main content... Come to think of it, exactly the opposite of what they intend! ;)
- Jordi Soler
Static. Unless a flash ad is particularly clever or interesting it gets annoying within a matter of seconds.
- Amy
Static, and no toolbar overlays. (nothing makes me stabbyer)
- Matthew DeVries
I am really surprised at the almost unanimity of static. I may change my website.
- Alan Morris
I don't mind Flash, as long as I start the Flash. This mess, has stopped me from ordering my sandwiches from there - http://www.jimmyjohns.com. A website should not do anything but display in a static manner until I've given it the goahead to move.
- Matthew DeVries
static. I don't play music when someone walks in my door, do you? find out what I want first, then let the media be presented
- randulo
Animated. If I don't see page elements dancing the Macarena, the site is clearly not worth my time.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
static also because if I'm viewing in my phone it doesn't display. The worst are ones that require the flash to get through to the content of the site.
- Sarah
Static. I have Flash off by default.
- Victor Ganata
I can't stand flash sites. It's a pet peeve of mine. I don't mind little pieces being flash, but I don't want anything overly flash or music or autoplay, etc. Ick.
- Araceli
"Despite having one of the most popular online photo services in the world, Flickr has done things the hard way on the iPhone. That is to say for browsing photos they’ve made you go through their optimized website, and for uploading you had to do it through email. Both worked fine, but were not as seamless as a native iPhone application. Now they have that as well."
- Holger Eilhard

"Internet Explorer dropped 1.1 percentage points last month, to 66.6 percent. The slide was the browser’s steepest since last November, when it dropped by 2 percentage points, according to Net Applications. In the last 12 months, IE has lost 8.6 points of browser share."
- Matt Cutts

Woah - that's actually pretty cool. If I set it to use the 9400M for graphics, and the 9600 GT for calculation I can get the simulation to run at 40fps, and 25 Gigaflops, all with only a 4% CPU load.
- Sparky, a big deal
Oh hell yes I'm a showoff! Also: if I leave the graphics on the 9400M, and do calculation with 9600GT and CPU hybrid model I'm getting 32 Gigaflops out of my MBP. It wasn't so long ago that 32 Gigaflops was a server farm, not a laptop. Welcome to the future of computing.
- Sparky, a big deal
Cool - we can all have one? I'll take 2, thank you.
- WorldofHiglet
I have Google Wave now. It's awesome and I love it. But then again, I'm a Google fanboy. Anyone want to share their Google Wave usernames so we can add each other to our contact lists?
can't agree more with pirillo, but gina had a glimpse
- adam garrett
To all asking about invites: I have none. There is currently no way to do that. Also, viki saigal: I have it and can post a screenshot if you'd like. It's the Developer Preview.
- Eric Geller
I doubt I will have enough invites to get you all in, at least not in the first round. But I'll invite people in the order you post here.
- Eric Geller
If you can, right here Eric. Thanks!
- Andrew Leahey
Guys, Wave users don't have the ability to send out invites. Only Google can invite people, at the moment. This is a developer beta, not a user beta ....
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Sorry for the late response, but I've added the two of you who posted your Wave IDs here. Hopefully more of you will get your invites soon!
- Eric Geller
invite me please.... rail.shiyapov @ gmail dot com , thx

Gmail... I use Gmail as a relay with every one of my domains. If the Outlook DB ever crashes, I have a backup and Gmail's spam filter is by far the best.

Gmail's interface is by far the best user interface of any of the web-based e-mail services I have used. But, it doesn't go far enough to be keyboard controlled for me and still feels a little awkward.
- Travis B. Hartwell
I can't imagine why anyone signing up for a new mail service these days would go with anything other than GMail.
- Travis B. Hartwell
Google is totally my god and as such I must use Gmail.
- Justin Yost
I'll start. I'm enjoying playing with my Pogoplug, which turns any USB hard drive into a network hard drive that you can access from the web anywhere in the world. pogoplug.com

Bought the iPhone 3GS 2 days ago, trying to organize the homescreens now. (Also: the move from iPod Touch to iPhone is actually a bit scary.)

Depends. My heartrate/stopwatch is winning me back. I wish it had GPS and a pedometer.

Holy mackerel, Matt!! Your head is shiny! My current favorite gadget is the Blackberry 8900+Google Voice. I feel sorry for those poor iPhone users ;)

Blackberry 8900, although I cannot wait for the 9700, T-Mobile needs a 3G Blackberry device like yesterday :)
- Nithin Jawali
@Stelian: To use it with the operator I prefer here in Sweden, I have to jailbreak and unlock it. And its always scary to see if you made all settings right, and don't pay per MB of data you use, or roams of another network etc.
- Gustav Holmström
iPhone 3GS - I dumped a BB Bold and I am so happy now!
- Giorgio
@Gustav: Ahh, I know what you mean. I had to do the same here in Switzerland with my 3G. However, you're scared only the first time you do it :-)
- Stelian Iancu
@Stelian: Nah, scared the first days, and really scared to call and check the balance.
- Gustav Holmström

Lovin' my Slacker G2! Cancelled XM subscription months ago and this little G2 is far more enjoyable than any of the satellite radios (and service) I've had over the years.

I've been really enjoying my new Nike+ app with running sensor that syncs with iPhone 3Gs/iTunes. I've been running alot listening to RAGE and tracking all my data. Pretty cool technology that I am benefiting from healthwise.

Depends. Sometimes I use OS X. Sometimes I use my wife's Vista laptop. Soon we'll be adding a Windows 7 laptop into the mix.

OS X. OS X and Ubuntu servers. Windows in VM.

Ubuntu Linux -- Jaunty on my laptop, work desktop, and OpenVZ VE's on my home server, Hardy on my VPS. CentOS on my home server as the base OS (probably will replace that with Ubuntu at some time). Debian Linux on the thousands of servers I help manage at work. I have XP in a VMWare Workstation VM for those times I am required to use Windows for something.

Windows XP SP3 currently. I'll add Ubuntu once I put my new 250GB hard drive in (current C drive is 40GB). Two more upgrades (power supply and video card), and I'll be ready for Windows 7 -- but I'm keeping XP installed for Win7's XP Mode.
- Dennis Jernberg
OS X 10.5.7 and Windows 7. I also have a Windows 2k3 Server machine that has some hardware issues and thus has fallen into temporary disuse.

Good Morning Robert. I'm been looking for a new perspective on Social media, and what better than yours. Thank you very much for all the insight on your blog, the content is just the breathe of fresh air i needed! (especially the Twitter Platform Shortcomings post!)

good morning! haha... so very late=) btw it's 08:00 pm here in Indonesia

keep doing posts like this please Robert. I love them.

many are running the Wave Dev Sandboxes already. Just not ready for primetime yet.
- vijay
Wave coming out now would be pretty cool... if it was ready. I'd rather my first hands-on experience not be like the Wave clone that I tried out recently. I'd much rather wait a little longer for a better first experience.
- Matthew Horton
Even GMail wasn't ready for Primetime when they opened it up
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
gmail launched as a beta. Wave is somewhere near alpha status now.
- vijay
Guess that's a matter of opinion. I've been using it since 9/9/04 when it was invitation only and even since the very beginning of me using it, I've felt it was better than Hotmail and Yahoo pretty easily.
- Matthew Horton
At the very least, invites should be expanded to all FF loyalists (Hint:) )
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
They should not. It's really show and unreliable at this point. They should definitely wait before it becomes more stable and fast before letting the crowd in.
- Egor Kunovsky
Egor knows the problems that comes with releasing "too" early : )
- vijay
Nooo it's not ready. They should just let us give out invitations to people we know.
- Californian
One thing about Wave is that it would, I assume, require an implementation of their XMPP service, which most cheap webhosts will not allow. So this is something to explore, but there should also be asynchronous options.
- Kevin L
I want to adopt Wave early now, I don't care about bugs. Just let FriendFeed users try it and slowly give us invites that we can give to anyone else we know. How are we supposed to develop Gadgets and Robots for Wave without access to trying it?
- Charbax
Have you all signed up for dev access yet? You won't get in otherwise. It took me until a couple weeks ago to get it and I signed up right after it was announced.
- Californian
I'm going to go sign up for Google Wave dev tonight. I'm in no hurry to clutter my table with more stuff, but Wave will have some degree of penetration no matter what.
- Jason Nunnelley
I second that! Although I would hope they had time to get all the "kinks" and "tweaks" worked out. :D Tim J @ WWW.MHWD.ORG
- Tim Tunnicliff
from email
Trust me, it's not usable at this point. Maybe in a few months.
- Vezquex: God of FF
I agree, Wave crashes my browser so often that I end up using a totally different computer just to ensure stability.
- Eric Geller
Vezquex is right, Wave is truly beta. I got a dev acct from attending Google IO. Public beta is soon, end of September I think.
- James Williams
how about this new clonefeed project implement the wave protocol for true real-time experience.
- Gtp19
With a 25% crash rate? Not a good call
- LANjackal
I love that Bret, Paul, and Kevin checked in. They probably are looking at their screens and asking "what do we do now?" how about ship some new features before Facebook overlords take you off to do bigger things?
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I feel sorry for all you addicts. My use of it is purely social.
- Bruce Lewis
I do like FF and use it almost every day. Wouldn't it be great if FB either left it alone so we can continue to use it as "professionals," or somehow incorporate it into a more "mature" version of FB that didn't have all the annoying, time-wasting apps, games, etc. I'd much prefer a totally customizable FF "wall."
- Cathryn Hrudicka
I think FFundercats HO!!!!! would have worked but I'm here anyways.
- Jimminy
Actively fighting addiction to anything on a daily basis, but I'm still a FriendFeed fan! (I'd have been here sooner but I've been staring at Phoebe Cates pics for longer than I realized.)
- Mark Jepsen
Thank you Robert Scoble to be here. :) BTW is this looks interesting for FF replacement? : http://streamy.com/ ? May be... I'll try it to see. :)
- Claude LaFrenière
Why should I? Whats in it for me? You doing some sort of survey of people to send out the police to do a "Safety Check" on when the site is shutdown?
- CW™
here. anecdote: a friend of mine just signed up for FF this evening. apparently the FriendFeed hype of the last 24 hours pushed him over the top. leaves me wondering whether FF has actually gained users today?it would be a crafty way of marketing the service. I'll wake up tomorrow to discover that there was a problem with the paperwork and the FriendFeed team have had a change of heart.
- David Hall
from BuddyFeed
Count me in even though I was just starting to get hooked. I guess it's time to find a rehab and get all sobered up until the next relapse with some other new addiction. Isn't life grand?

- Brett Kelly

++Jay. I was going to do the same thing yesterday but I didn't want to pay the money.
- David Cook
David -- this was a $9.95 session but you can get them for $7.95 and there are also 25% off coupons if you do online check-in prior to your Delta flight. That's an incentive for folks to use that service and offload kiosk use at the terminals. Very savvy marketing by the folks at GoGo and Delta combined.
- Jay Cuthrell
well, it's 12:12 a.m. and I'm perusing FF from my iPhone via BuddyFeed before turning in. so yeah, I guess I count. "Here!" (raises hand)
- Don Faulkner
from BuddyFeed
I recommend FF to some of my clients, and there are some companies and nonprofits with presences here—not like Twitter, but I'll be curious how that will be affected when FB takes over more. Most have FB fan pages, groups and/or causes, too.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Yeah, me too. I just saw the request to have a comment link at the bottom of the comments from one of your friends just yesterday and here it is. I'd say they are listening. Thanks FF.
