Sunil Kaul, CEO of Vertical Circuits, Inc shows me their tech which has eight chips stacked one on top of another. Who said Silicon Valley is dead? This guy proves it is not.
- Robert Scoble
Interesting.... is this vertical (3d) memory??? Or just normal RAM chips stacked???
- Roberto Bonini
the website [ http://www.verticalcircuits.com/ ] says the the company has pioneered VIP ( vertical interconnect pillar ) technology that enables manufacturers to produce stacked ICs as this one..
- Arvind
wasn't there a cluster/super computer group working on building blades w/ multiple mobile chips in them?
- clarke thomas
Arvind: they are expecting these chips to be in cell phones beginning later this year. Parth: these are flash memories, so don't need much cooling. If they tried to do processors like that, yes, they would need cooling. Roberto: yes, this is vertical/3D memory. Jay, would love to come out to Research Triangle Park sometime.
- Robert Scoble
Why do we need more storage? And why do we need it to be smaller? I can already get an 8GB micro-SD card for <$12. Exactly what problem are they solving?
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
Steve: I have a 32GB card in my Canon 5D Mark II and it's not enough. We ALWAYS need more storage. Especially when the world moves to HD video.
- Robert Scoble
But, are you wiling to pay for it? This seems like a "twice the storage at 3 times the cost" type of solution, and cost is the dominating factor in storage these days. I'm sure there are a few places where "size is king" but I still assert that "cost is king".
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
Steve: if you gave me 64GB I would pay 3x more than 32 cost me. How do you know this to be true? Because I do it every year.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, but you're totally outside the norm. I'm not disagreeing that there's a market for really fracking expensive (and dense) flash memory, I'm just saying that the market is pretty small, especially considering that Moore's law isn't on these guys' side.
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
I don't agree. The market continually brings new things that we pay a lot more for. You are sounding like that guy who said that 640KB is enough for everyone! :-)
- Robert Scoble
I will never again pay more than $12 for any removable flash storage, this is likely true. :)
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
Does this guys tech give faster read & write speeds due to the chip-level parallelism? That would be worth paying extra for, especially for SSD-esque applications.
- Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
Steve: no, but it's cheaper to manufacture than other 3D techniques (they use silver to make the interconnects, where other companies use gold wires).
- Robert Scoble
It's still a bit crashy, but I am guessing that will improve with time. Overall, its features make the app well worth it. It supports most major e-book web sites directly plus shared books via a login on the Stanza web site.
- Phil G
@phil, have you tried it with the kindle? my kindle is coming in the mail tomorrow. i have heard that stanza works well with it. but would love confirmation...and i know, i know...the iphone is a good ebook reader too but i read so much that i think the backlit screen would make me go blind in the long run.
- mike
@mike, I don't have a kindle, sorry. Actually, I still prefer my Nokia 770 for e-book reading because of its higher resolution and longer battery life, but the iPhone wins due to it being constantly in my pocket. I've entertained the idea of getting a Kindle, but I think I'm waiting for v.2 at this point.
- Phil G
How does the iphone battery do running Stanza, it keeps the backlight on all the time, right?
- Kevin Goldsmith
from twhirl
@Jason - I'm with you on that. But for people who would normally tote a hardback with them, the Kindle makes sense.. say business travelers that constantly flying somewhere. @Kevin I installed the app this morning so the jury's still out on battery life.
- Phil G
try ereader - you can buy books as well...
- don loeb
@kevin - that's exactly my worry. also that i like to read a lot. i fear if i had to read on the tiny screen a lot, i would read less because of the eyestraing and a lack of comfort. i am hoping the kindle encourages me to read more, not less. i would love to hear about someone reading infinite jest or a neal stephenson book on the iphone.
- mike
I read two Neal Stephenson novels on a Samsung Blackjack, whose screen is quite smaller than the iPhone's, with absolutely no eyestrain and with superior comfort to a hardcopy book (one-handed operation with a device that is light as a feather). I'm not sure why people believe they need large facing pages of text to read books, articles and other kinds of documents comfortably. Actually, a smaller window on the text improves my concentration.

Ron Paul is a patriot and a gentleman. He speaks his mind and has a terrific character. I think he knows that he can't get elected, because his views are not mainstream enough to appeal to a large enough audience. The numbers just don't work out. But, he still trudges forward, giving a voice to ideas that don't receive a lot of press otherwise. I forget who said it, that 'those who have the least to lose can speak the most freely'.
- Alex Hutnik
Apparently this picture is from months ago. Still sad though :P.
- Costa Walcott
I think they photoshopped the background.
- AJ Batac
Man, I don't wanna end up like that in 50 years! Sad, sooo sad...
- Jason
Ron Paul should be the president. Obama is part of the same corrupt system as McCain Bush, etc.
- Tokyo Dan
Wish we had someone like Ron Paul in the UK. I would of voted for him if I was in the US. Obama seems a nice guy but as Tokyo Dan said Obama and McCain are ran by the same corrupt system. God I sound like Adam Curry on the DSC, lol

Ron Paul wold have ended abortion rights in this country as we know it.
- PC Easy
from twhirl
There's no such thing as an "abortion right."
- ComicList
is there some kind of godwin's law for when a discussion devolves into the abortion debate?
- anna sauce
Yeah, that's just what we need. When the economy is going to hell, let's talk about abortion.
- Victor Ganata
I agree. I am very happy with Twitter. Even if it does go down alot. But they are getting better. I haven't seen twitter down all week
- Tyler (Chacha)
from twhirl
Over the last month, I have tended to use Twitter less. During the last Lakers-Celtics game, for example, I was in the NBA Finals FriendFeed room. Ironic, since I spent good chunks of the World Series on Twitter.

from fftogo
Has anybody created any room for this yet?
- Jigar Mehta
Every year I revert to IRC since the websites continue to have issues. Macrumors has done the best to adapt, but they are generally 15-30 minutes behind which is a lifetime during a keynote.
- Bwana ☠
Please do this... I will watch... I promise...
- Mike Wills
Ryan Block just commented that someone has squatted the Engadget room name and the FriendFeed guys haven't responded yet. He is however considering it
- Bwana ☠
Bwana, The one thing I am trying to figure out with the room I have created for next weeks Enterprise 2.0 conference is how do you get all the conversation into One room or a couple of rooms so that the conversation is not fractured ala Twitter? What if for WWDC next Monday 20 rooms were created for the conference. Would not prefer that activity take place in one room....
- OnDemand Beat
Great idea. We'll see if it holds up better than Twitter.
- Daniel Shaw
Ameed, it's going to happen even if you did it the traditional way. For example, each Apple Keynote with Steve Jobs generally tends to have several journalistic/blogging outfits liveblogging: MacRumors, Gizmodo, Engadget, MacWorld, et al. To get a good discussion, however, you need to have someone with some authority on the subject doing it: I'm sure there are dozens of others liveblogging the events, but those 4 get most of the traffic because they have an established reader base.
- Mark Trapp
Which is why it's pretty cool that Ryan Block was considering Friendfeed: he would bring with him much of Engadget's readerbase. Edit: Looks like Friendfeed is giving the room to Ryan and Engadget: awesome.
- Mark Trapp
Isn't this a risk to have load that should be handled by the websites rather than a shared tool like this one? I mean the big websites you cite can handle this load during events like keynotes on their own blog... it's after all the concept of "I produce - You consume"
- directeur
I've started a FriendFeed room called "Stevenote". It's public to encourage reporting-discussion-analysis, though I'd consider making it semi-public and co-administered if a top-tier personality wanted to liveblog directly in this room. For now, there are some links of interest for WWDC 2008, including links for major liveblogging sites. Feel free to add to it... http://friendfeed.com/rooms...
- LogEx
I'll be sure to check it out Logical Extremes
- Bwana ☠
@bwana - you bet. it's going to be a lot of fun i think and a really good way to spread the info quickly -- and of course have a conversation about it!
- MG Siegler
I think that will be the biggest benefit of using the FF rooms for big conferences and events. Discussions can pop up around individual pieces of news as they occur. Can't do that with an enormous live-blog post (at least not easily).
