And yes, I do subscribe to some Twitter users on Google Reader :-) (The Google Reader Team should take note of that - there's a use-case there)

Hang on...so let's get this straight. Google Reader is perfect *and* amazing, Friendfeed is dead but better-than-ever and Twitter will out-Ad Facebook? #tryingtokeepup

I stopped using Google Reader for following Twitter RSS and have been using FriendFeed instead... FF has become my newsreader.

How would you like a credit on next year’s tax bill? The United States Internal Revenue Service is offering tax credits up to 30% of your cost for solar installations and other energy saving systems (to a maximum of $1,500) for the tax years 2009 and 2010.

"According to FDIC's own statistics as of June, 2008, 98% of all depositors at FDIC-insured banks were covered by the $100,000 limit." Well that's a bit silly. People with more than $100K to put in the bank deliberately spread it across multiple accounts to keep them FDIC insured. If you're married you can keep $300K in a single bank by spreading it across three accounts: His, Hers and...

OK, not exactly what I was expecting, but very cool.

Anyone have the video somewhere other than Youtube? it's banned here in Turkey and I can't wait until we get home (next month) to watch it!!
- Chris Myles
Bret, this video should be titled: A Love Song for FriendFeed ! Great vid (and music) !
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
This is superb. I just showed it to my 5 year old son who enjoys Lego and has already taken some great photos, including one or two of his toys. So now he has the seed of the idea that, in time, he could take multiple stills and put them together to make moving pictures. Thank you very much for posting it and giving me and him that opportunity. Maybe, he might use FriendFeed one day too!
- John W Lewis
I think they need to make a full stop-motion version of the Matrix in legos. Now THAT would be awesome. I wonder what bullet-time looks like in LEGO?
- Bret Taylor
i'd pay to see the stop animation lego matrix, but not the sequels

Welcome Baby Ryan!!! My baby Ryan (17 years!) and I are honored to welcome another superstar to our planet! Love, hugs, and lots of kisses to Baby Ryan, Mommy Maryam, Dad Robert and big brothers Milan & Patrick and of course Grandma!!! My guess on Ryan's arrival (predication) was only 23 hours off. I thought he would arrive on Friday, Sept. 18th at 11:45 pm. Love to all, Kelly & Ryan Kim

What a moment, eh? I remember when my daughter came into this world, it was so exciting there were no words for it. Congrats on your wonderful baby boy!

Congratulations! Welcome to the world, Ryan. :-)

Congratulations Robert and Maryam! And welcome Ryan. If I was having a baby today, I'd begin a blog for him/her straight away as an online diary they could look back on when grown up.

- Joey Gibson
(rolls eyes) This happens every single event and every single keynote. You have some delighted and many others who buzzed themselves up. The smarter thing to do is be neutral and see what shows up.
- Louis Gray
Totally agree: people talking about Tablets, about an online version of iTunes "à la Spotify"... and what do we get? An iPod Nano with a camera?
- Jordi Soler
Obviously some cool stuff, but this is the first iPod announcement I haven't thought "Oooh, I really want get me one of these."
- Jared B. Luther
The speculation about an Apple tablet came from an analyst who admitted it was just speculation. But that was enough for lot of people to bank on it as if it were a fact. If Apple had to deny every incorrect rumor, it'd have to hire its own PR agency just for that. Still, I don't think the event was a fail because it was pretty huge that Jobs ran the show himself.
- Ed Moltzen
Yeah, Steve's recovery was the best part. But you have to admit there was so much buzz for this one that one can't help but feel disappointed. It feels as if the "Apple era" is starting to fade...
- Jordi Soler
Expectations are by definition personal. If yours were low, this event exceeded them. If yours were high, this event was underwhelming. Whose fault is it if the hype is high? Apple's? I don't think so. I'm impressed with the number of things they announced today.
- Stephen Mack

I didn't think it was a fail. I thought it was pretty solid. Sure the only thing I was excited about was iTunes, but that is only because I'm not getting another iPod since I have an iPhone. But, I can see the things that people would be excited for.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Agreed. One of the biggest Apple fails ever. WTF were they thinking putting a cam on the nano and not the touch? Does skinny steve know how many apps in the app store make use of a camera?
- Tomy Thomson
Not likely, Tad. There aren't any that represent conservatives.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
couldn't agree more mark... though i find it intersting that some democrats are looking already for someone besides mr. obama
- Jonathan Jesse
I'd be delighted with a fiscally conservative party that held liberally social values (or at the very least, didn't base the party around intolerance).
- Chrimmus Tad
I wrote a paper in my AP English class in high school about how this circular nature of parties takes place. At the moment the Republican party has pretty much moved so far to the right it's almost flaming liberal (again, think of it as a circle).
- Jesse Stay
how much longer till the Republican Party splits, or has it already happened and no one noticed?
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Aaman, both parties are very split. There's just no good way of organizing the split.
- Jesse Stay
Sounds like what's happening in India - centre-right party in Opposition is imploding, the centre-left party in power (the Congress(I) is consolidating power and delivering credible governance, just re-elected after full term.
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Hmm, that's an interesting topic for an article - note to self
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Tad, sounds like you need to be Libertarian.
- Jesse Stay
Libertarians are still a little too far left of middle for my taste. I agree with some Social liberalism, but not to the extent of extreme libertarianism. Republicans are too far right for my taste. I need something right down the middle.
- Jesse Stay
Been there, done that Jesse. For a while in the 90s I considered myself to be a hardcore anarcho-capitalist. I've realized over the years that a Libertarian government isn't suited to my own desires for humanity. The role of government should be to help hasten technological improvement and thus the Singularity. But then, I'm weird like that.
- Chrimmus Tad
Thanks Jesse for sharing your thoughts today. You are inspiring me to keep standing up for what I believe, and not what they Party has turned into.
- Sid Burgess
Sid, I love that song - it's inspiring.
- Jesse Stay
Republicans aren't conservative enough. However, that won't stop them from rolling over the dems in '10. Luckily, polls are showing the huge surge to conservatism in the U.S. People are finally realizing the government is not the answer.
- Spencer
Jesse, me too. And thanks to you I am in one of those moods... looking for inspiration today. :D
- Sid Burgess
Jesse, what if fiscal conservatives left the GOP and joined the LP? Would that shift the LP rightward enough for your tastes?
- Michael R. Bernstein
Michael, I guess we'd have to see. I'm definitely not moving - if one party moves towards my values I may join though.
- Jesse Stay
Good man. Would that there were more like you.
- Terry Hummer
Why does anyone associate the Republicans with conservatism?
- Robin Barooah

I'm rather irked that my own school district has opted to not show this speech live. While I can understand wanting to stay on topic within the middle and high school classes, making it a district-wide policy is irritating at a minimum. The speech is *for* our kids. I remember watching these as a kid and feeling rather proud to be an American each and every time.
- Renee Hendricks
I'll be happy when this whole stupid speech is over and my kids can get back to learning about academics.
- David C. Cooper
I still don't understand why people think the President addressing kids is a bad idea. There's no logic to it.

- Jesse Stay
Robert, please quote exactly what from the lesson plan you disagree with, instead of making hyperbolic and purposely inflammatory statements. I mean, if you've read the document.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Actually, Robert is pretty much correct, but I think it's just a poor choice of wording, really: http://www.docstoc.com/docs... "Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."
- Otto
Thanks Jesse. I find it's better not to assume what people mean- especially when it's on a monitor.
- metalerik
Wow, and Steve Gilmore can sure turn a phrase, also: "I still can’t get past the reality that when Twitter farts, FriendFeed becomes a complete and total gasbag." It goes downhill from there.
- Rex Hammock
oh, well, that's never happened before :)
- Steve Gillmor
holden: can u splain the activia ref?
- Steve Gillmor
The whole article, Steve. Why does he blame FriendFeed? Is it like blaming Drew's cancer, or something? And why anyone thinks Twitter is better than this is beyond me. (Just realized you're the Steve who wrote it.) Still don't get it. Why do you think Twitter is better?
- Kimber Scott
Kimber: Where do I say Twitter is better. It just is. And FriendFeed brings out whatever that is.
- Steve Gillmor
Steve - Twitter is better at giving voice to teeth whitening moms and life coaches. You can't use Twitter without using some sort of third-party thing. (I use Tweetdeck and FF.) I much prefer spending my time here and checking in there. I have my rooms here. I don't have to click on anything to see a picture. I can talk as long as I want in one post. Liking is much better than RTing and...

- Kimber Scott
That was funniest Gilmor post I've read. Read it three times and still trying to understand the point but it was great.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Yeah. Yet another journalist who doesn't know how to use FF. Why do I think this? B/c in his screenshot Louis or Robert were telling him how to use it! haha.
- anna sauce
No offense, Steve, but I'd like someone with a big following to review FriendFeed who actually knows how to use it. Perhaps the ease-of-use is way past these folks? I doubt it. Or whip out the old "I don't have time/ I have a job." Yet, these people spend their time reviewing, and using, technology. So.... still unclear on why the non-power-users are reviewing it.
- anna sauce
As I said, I'm not a geek and I had no trouble figuring FriendFeed out. It's really not that hard. Really. Actually, it's easier than Twitter. First: You don't have to figure out what it's for. You "get it" right away. It's obviously a communication tool. Second: if you want to jump in on a conversation, which you can actually have on FriendFeed, and as I did with this one, you don't...

- Kimber Scott
anna I am a power user. Kimber I love FriendFeed but also know why it exists. How hard is it to understand that there is a hugely dynamic symbiotic relationship between the two platforms, dominated by Twitter's reach and FF's depth. Holden, the point was to communicate, which it definitely is doing. And even developers like Dave choose not to explain some of what they write. Activia means what?
- Steve Gillmor
Activia is a company that makes yogurt that aids in getting the bowels flowing...
- Ryan
So, Steve, what you're saying then is there is a symbiotic relationship between a parasite on a pimple on an ass and a body as a whole? That seems like a one way relationship to me and it doesn't reflect kindly on FriendFeed. So, I guess what I don't get, getting back to my original comment, is how you can love FriendFeed and still call it a parasitic ass-pimple eater.
- Kimber Scott
from email
Ryan ahh thanks I use Metamucil when I have that problem, but this piece came easily
- Steve Gillmor
Kimber it's a reference to the original post, and it represents a size relationship in the post Oprah Twitterscape. And one organism's pimple is another's home sweet home. I love host and tenant, one more than the other -- which you'll have to ask elsewhere for the "answer."
- Steve Gillmor
Couldn't you just blame Friendfeed once and be done with it in under 140 chars?
- ianf ⌘
is anyone else wondering where gillmor gets off not googling things for himself? steve... double click the word, right click it, and do the search google option in the context menu... i really is that simple
- Chris Heath
Guess it's nice that you think you're a power user, but you haven't really shown here that you are. Upset with the "gasbag" of FF? Follow new people. Create lists. Get off the main feed. Trim your subscriptions. You can't complain about the content (well, I can) unless you either know the various ways around it. Then you can complain. Otherwise, it just seems that you, like most of the people reviewing FF, have no idea how to use it.
- anna sauce
This whole thread is one the funniest things I have read in a long time, including the post that started it all! Thanks to everyone.
- frankiecarl
Unfortunately Steve is right, if Twitter goes down, the quality of realtime information in FF decreases... it is still the best client for Twitter but sharing and discovery still happens first on the fail whale network
- Alberto Saavedra
from Nambu
Holy smokes! I agree w/Frankiecarl, this is hilarious.
- Mark Evans
from iPhone
I commented on Steve's article, because I felt there was way more he could have written about the actual problem, the DDoS attack. However, there is one thing that bugs even me sometimes. It's one thing to have the best platform amongst social media, but it needs to be demonstrated in times like this. Needs a few more people using the strengths of FF to do a bit of citizen journalism.
- George Hall (Australia)
Alberto, that's exactly my concern in the future as Friendfeed grows. As mass mainstream enters, quality the way we think of it decreases to Twitter Trending Topics.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
ianf: no. anna: what makes you think gasbag is not a term of endearment? George: it's really simple, FF's fault. Chris: I don't use search except as a spell checker, and I trust Dave WIner's spelling implicitly.
- Steve Gillmor
This is a hysterical thread in response to one of the funniest posts i've read in a long time. the stuff about Steve not Googling for himself...that's just rockin' funny. thx for the laugh. I needed it.
- Karoli
ff's fault only in that they don't always take opportunities to demonstate FF in such times NOT for what's happened.
- George Hall (Australia)
from BuddyFeed
how could you possibly know what happened. Me, I Blame FriendFeed
- Steve Gillmor
Why is Blame always capitalized? I feel like I'm missing out on something.
- Jonathan Langdale
Why, Steve? Why? What did FriendFeed do? I shouldn't even respond to this silly post anymore. It's almost like you're an artist who's painted a mess and is being vague about it with the hope that people might get the impression it must really "mean" something. Twitter goes down from a DOS attack and you Blame FriendFeed, but you love FriendFeed. You sound like my ex-husband.
- Kimber Scott
from email
Alberto, when Twitter went down, my FriendFeed folks continued to serve me quality contents. Really.
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Steve, your article made perfect sense to me. Sorry others didn't agree. It's clear that the tweetstream is the core of FF's value to most people, even if FF has oodles of other features that we "native" FFers get a lot more mileage out of.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Why doesn't everyone just pick a horse and ride it? This quibbling over platforms is tiresome.
- ZuDfunck
Daniel: wasn't too hard, was it. thx
- Steve Gillmor
i'm a tad inebriated, but still... wha? if twitter is the be all end all of online communications then we're f'd... seriously (in an inebriated kind of way)
- Chris Heath
and by 'be all end all' i mean 'end all be all' and by that i mean 'core of FF's value to most people'
- Chris Heath
Is it because I've just exited the 25-54 demo and now face the death panel, or does anyone else detect some ageism in comments about Steve's opinions on tech? in regards to steve, his style, and the reactions that his writings and online activities provoke: I think steve is either 1) trying to 'stir the pot' to 'get a rise' out of a certain type of person in a john c dvorak kind of way, 2) maybe he's really just a crotchety old man, and i mean that in the kindest of ways that a stranger can say that about someone or 3) something else -- and i...

I really love following Joe Hewitt (http://friendfeed.com/joehewi...) discuss developing the Facebook iPhone app so openly on Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed (and open sourcing most of it at the same time). Sets a really high standard for transparency in product development. I hope more companies follow his example.
Bret, the gang at FriendFeed do a good job as well. After consistently banging my head against Google's "Wall of Silence" the content here is incredibly refreshing. Thanks!!
- Chris Myles
This is what I exactly want to do. But, usually the next release is a top secret for many of the companies and it's very stressful to write even the concepts you are working on.
- Burcu Dogan
I think most people would prefer to work this way, but it is worth noting how difficult that can be at a large, well-known company: individuals, the press and Wall St are trying to read something into every little thing you say or do, there are SEC rules to worry about, and so forth. I feel lucky that I work mostly on open source stuff at Google, so this doesn't affect me most of the time.
- Joel Webber
Joel, I do understand the bigger issues at Google, I'm referring more to the product and support side. I've been getting some VERY bad vibes from other users and developers in the forums for Blogger, GFC, Picasa, Maps etc and their APIs. I've actually had people tell me to stop asking questions about GFC because no one from Google responds. Here I get the exact opposite feeling, from...

chrismyles: some of the issues are cultural and others are technical. google support discussions used to be mailing lists, and wading through so many messages is time consuming. since moving to their forum system, the level of responses have improved somewhat and it seems the staff is better able to pick out topics to reply. the friendfeed platform is even better, and allows topics the community thinks are important to receive a higher priority.
- Mike Chelen
from IM
Mike, I guess we'll have to see.. What I love about FF is it makes it easier for ME to keep track of all my discussions in a single spot. Google's new support discussions require me to visit each group independently; there is no central location where I can monitor all my questions. It might be easier for Google but it's harder for me.. If only they all used friendfeed!!
- Chris Myles
So Bret, what do you think of the resulting app? Now you've got even more reasons to be interested!!
- Chris Myles
Chris: indeed those are the sort of technical or design capabilities that can restrict or enhance the effectiveness for users of a platform. both google and friendfeed have dedicated and skilled staff, yet here they are more able to communicate efficiently with relatively greater numbers of people.
- Mike Chelen
Is Boo a common word in the UK for this kind of thing or is this a copy of Audioboo.fm from Bestbefore.tv? if you have an iPhone you can do this using the Audioboo iPhone app and adding the feed to Friendfeed. Horses for courses.
