According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) website, the organization will initiate a religious theme campaign in October targeting cage housing of hens. Their website directs viewers to professional videos presenting non-contextual statements by Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious authorities and purports to buttress the HSUS opposition to caged hens. "Golden Oval Eggs, LLC, showed net income of $2.8 million in the third fiscal quarter ended May 31 compared to a loss of $1 million the previous year, according to the Renville, Minn. company’s filing with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission in early July. This year’s income was on net sales of $56.6 million, an increase of $3.6 million or 6.8 percent over the third quarter the prior fiscal year. Driven by strong egg prices, Land O’Lakes, Inc.’s Moark egg subsidiary posted $11 million in earnings for the second quarter 2008, compared to $2.7 million for the same period a year earlier. The 2008 earnings came on sales of $139 million compared to $111 million in 2007. Pretax earnings through June are $43.3 million, more than six times higher than the $6.9 million for the first half of 2007. A USDA grant of $5 million was awarded to the University of Delaware in corporation with 17 other institutions to investigate diagnostic procedures for avian influenza.
