Berkeley:Craftsman :: S. Palo Alto/N. Mountain View/N. Sunnyvale:Eichler

Craftsman are all over peoples- Gamble house in Pasadena, one of the prototypes. you know those CA architects, they get around.
- anna sauce
You know what's weird? SF Victorians weren't made in the Victorian period. That's always screwed me up.
- anna sauce
There's an awful lot of Edwardians here, but I guess they're less famous for some reason. Because the hippies didn't paint them in pastels?
- anna sauce
I think most people think Edwardians *are* Victorians. I know I did for a long time. Loads of Craftsman houses in Berkeley. Part of why I feel at home here. I hail from South Pasadena, another town chock full of Craftsmans (as well as "Brady Bunch" style houses in the younger developments in the hills).
- Spidra Webster
FWIW, I spent a minute going back and forth between craftsman/tudor. I think that might make Tudor -> Edwardian? PS I like Eich. Wish they had 'em up here.
- Phillip Kast
LOVE Craftsmans. The Victorians...tend to have weird floor plans. But bay windows, FTW.
- Derrick
Oakland also has a *ton* of Craftsman bungalows. I think it was basically offered in the Sears catalog and they'd build it to spec.

"Sixteen years ago, Bill Clinton’s “vetting” team asked me and other prospective cabinet members for (1) our tax returns, going back at least five years, (2) our bank records, (3) a detailed listing of our assets, (4) the names and places of everywhere we had lived, and the names and phone numbers of neighbors whom they could call about us, (5) a description of every job we had ever had, every client we had ever served, and the names of employers and clients with whom they could check, (6) the names of our family members, their ages, their occupations (if any), (7) a description of any civil or criminal investigations or prosecutions in which we had been involved (8) and – perhaps most importantly – “anything we should ask you about, the answer to which might cause you or the administration any embarrassment.” ... Do you believe Sarah Palin was put through anything remotely like this before John McCain decided she would be his vice presidential candidate, and possible President of the United States?"

"Compared to median income in 2000 -- which, like 2007, was the final year of a cycle of economic growth -- it's now clear that this is the first time Americans have become poorer, in real terms, at the end of an expansion than they were at the start."

The same as Paul, simple, and efficient :)

Ctrol-Apple-D - looks up the definition of any word your mouse is hovering over
- Patrick Lightbody
there are keyboard shortcuts? shoot! I just switched to Mac, forgive me :)
- Zach Landes
Ctrl-space (the default setting to activate quicksilver). If you like keyboard shortcuts, and you haven't tried quicksilver, I would highly recommend it. Basically you activate the app, start typing and it searches applications, bookmarks, documents, and all sorts of stuff (all customizable), and gives you a list of them in a window, and then a list of available actions, like 'open', 'send e-mail', 'calculate', or 'look up in dictionary'. Really cool, and free.
- Robert Felty
ctrl-space with quicksilver. without quicksilver it would be shift-apple-4

Kevin, Thanks for the cntl-opt-cmd-8 tip. I was just getting annoyed in this coffee shop trying to find the cursor in google docs. This command just solved this for me.
- Jon-Paul Bussoli
Another reason why I like friendfeed for procrastination. It even helps my work! heh.
- Jon-Paul Bussoli
Just in case any of you have yet to find them all, open Keyboard ShortCuts in Keyboard & Mouse Preferences.
- John Lam
Apple-Tab for me. BTW, Ctrl-Apple-D does not work on all words, for example, fails in twirl for me. Otherwise, I didn't know that option so THANKS!
- Ivan Stegic

command(apple)-shift-/ opens help, and help goes and finds every other command in every application. i use it like i drink water.
- Michael Staton
Ivan: the dictionary service will only work in Cocoa- or Carbon-based applications. Non-cocoa/carbon applications like Twhirl (based on Adobe AIR) don't have access to it. One of my major sticking points in using ported applications.
- Mark Trapp
I use the 'capture' dashboard widget for screen capture. It has some additional options, like choosing how to save it (jpg, tiff, png, gif, pdf) the size (in pixels), and the quality. Pretty handy.
- Robert Felty
Thanks @Amit. From the guys that do Quicksilver. Nice. (Though ^⌘⌥8 is easy, and I don't want to stay in that mode for a long time. Just enough to give my eyes a break.)

"The ache is self-explanatory if you’ve seen Sydney’s films. It is the ache of having one chance at deep love in a lifetime of shallow loves, and losing it too early. It is the ache of perfect, private union destroyed by terrible, worldly circumstance. For Sydney, the ache was about the way that the things we hold most dear always elude us."

didn't Sony have a waterproof walkman? why is it so hard to make a waterproof iphone or ipod? seriously! no moving parts to rust... right?

They survive some of the time... have proof.

I think this might turn out to be a very big deal. Avi's got some pretty impressive benchmarks to go with some very cool underlying technology.

"True, after all that surgery, I still lack the power of speech. And after all those interviews, Studs is now, in his own words, "Deaf as a post." But I can still write about movies, and thanks to "a nifty little thing-a-ma-jig" device hooked to his hearing aids, Studs can still hear people and write about what they say"

"Personal carbon offsets are gonna look kinda twee and silly once we have gigantic, collective programs to drain carbon out of the sky. It's not about the personal emissions of the living -- we gotta remove the emissions that have been hanging over our heads since World War One."

"D’Angelo said in his letter that he would remain a strong and enthusiastic supporter of the much-hyped start-up" -- Hnh, I wonder if that's what he really said.

Wild. The adults are taking over. It'll be interesting to see if that's a good thing or not.
- Robert Scoble
This is what happens when a company stops listening to early adopters and influencers, though. The adults try to replace everyone. What new features has Facebook added in the past year since the application platform came out? Not many. Well, there was Beacon, which was a bad idea and poorly explained.
- Robert Scoble
More granulated privacy controls. That was important.
- Prokofy Neva
Well, they've also done pages, chat, translations, friend lists, removing the 5000 friend limit, and scaled to 100m+ users...
- Phillip Kast
Phillip: they also kick people off for doing pretty typical stuff. Just last week someone at Microsoft wrote me and told me she'd been kicked off for just talking with her friends. Pages? Yawn, we wouldn't have needed those if there wasn't a 5,000 friend limit. Chat? Annoying, if I wanted IM I would have used IM. FriendLists? Useful. Scaling to 100m users? Good, but most people don't notice that except when Facebook gets slow.
- Robert Scoble
Scaling is amazing: I always noticed when there were all of a sudden twice as many users and the site didn't slow down. I didn't get bored and go elsewhere; I was thoroughly impressed. I notice it all the time when facebook stays fast.

"Myhrvold gave the skeleton to the Smithsonian. It’s called the N. rex. “Our expeditions have found more T. rex than anyone else in the world,” Myhrvold said. “From 1909 to 1999, the world found eighteen T. rex specimens. From 1999 until now, we’ve found nine more.” Myhrvold has the kind of laugh that scatters pigeons. “We have dominant T. rex market share.”"
