I have possession of Kevin's TinyPrinter this afternoon! http://fury.com/imp/print.php I'm not always right next to it, but feel free to send me a message!
I went in to pet the kittens for a little bit and I come out and the printer is just spitting things out! I answer in order: I'm all out of Ice Cream!; I don't know who this is, so I don't know if I love you ;); EEK!, Ouch!; ...is always nice to hear; Crap, who's in my house?; I don't believe Pablo & Buster wrote that since I was in petting them; No Sammich's here, this is not Pittsburgh ;) ; *hugs back* Kevin is good at sharing!; and Yay! Someone got their card!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
now I answer you, that's what! ;) ; I don't know about a carrot festival, maybe you could direct me?; Sadly I do not speak binary.; beards are awesome! Hi Starmama, I will give them belly scritches!
- Rachel Lea Fox
and now i will be away from the print for a while!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Penny, you have a card on the way too, and if I ever package up this other stuff it will go out... someday... :)
- Rachel Lea Fox
Higlet, did you write out the timey-wimey one?
- Rachel Lea Fox
Your little package should arrive any day now, I hope! It took me well over a year to get mine out, I am so terrible! But I think you will like it :) I can't wait to hear!
- Penny

My first submission to Quirky on what to make using Electric Imp technology. Please follow the link, read it over and vote for it! :) - LED candles that allow you to link up multiple candles of different shapes and sizes into one wireless network controlled from your phone. | Quirky - http://www.quirky.com/ideatio...
I will admit, I don't know what TheSoup is Ryan. Just trying to get led candles made correctly. It will make my backyard and Halloween run much smoother! :) I have another lighting submission going up later today too. :)

Jimminy, it practically is!!! We are crazy thrilled. Betsy, we moved it, on top of the garage. It is all kinds of awesome! SteVe, thanks. We love it. We got it last summer. We knew what we wanted for a long time, but it took many years to actually find it.

"“I think it is atrocious!!!… Since I am no longer with the company, I’m sure they could care less what I think on the matter. But they have betrayed the essence of what we were trying to do with Merida—give young girls and women a better stronger role model. She’s strong inside and out—she’s not just a simpering pretty face waiting around for romance! She was created to turn that whole ideal on it’s [sic] head! Oh yeah… that’s why I created her… they’re just in it for the money… not the integrity. They don’t care what message they send about women, as long as it makes them a buck.” — Brenda Chapman on Disney’s Merida redesign."

Yeah, I read about that this morning. At least she looked normal (larger than all the other princesses) at the crowning. It will be interesting to see if there is a backlash now.
- Anne Bouey
Yeah I liked that too, that she looked heavier and more natural during the coronation. I couldn't tell if it was just the way the costume looked or if they actually hired a heavier actress, but either way (knowing Disney) it must have been intentional.
- Jessie
I don't like the new one. They made her too grownup. Cinched in her waist, made her eyes more alluring and plumped out her lips. There are other changes, but those are the ones that stand out at me. I don't mind the dress, but I would keep her not quite so curvy and less makeup and botox thank you. :)
- Rachel Lea Fox
The actress playing her also walked in a more tomboyish way up to the stage, I noticed.
- Spidra Webster
The one we saw at Disneyland last year was awesome. She passed by us at one point, and she had the swagger down perfectly.

"Giving a little bit of formula - the equivalent of a single bottle over several days - to a newborn who's losing too much weight after birth might actually increase the likelihood that the baby will be breast-feeding three months later, according to a small Bay Area study. In a climate of aggressive public health policy trying to cut down on formula use and encourage new moms to give infants only breast milk, the study results are likely to be controversial, and they may seem counterintuitive, the authors said. But for a select group of new mothers who are eager to breast-feed, small doses of formula, given for a short and carefully monitored time, may alleviate some of the stress associated with breast-feeding and, in turn, give them confidence to stick with it, said Dr. Valerie Flaherman, lead author of the study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. "This study does not mean that all babies should get formula or that formula is better than breast-feeding. It's my strong...

"But in the United States, while roughly three-quarters of mothers attempt to breast-feed, only 30 percent of them are breast-feeding exclusively at three months, and less than a quarter are breast-feeding at all by the time the baby is a year old. The reasons women stop breast-feeding are varied and complicated and not always well understood. One possibility that the study authors...

One of my friends did something like this, and it helped a lot (she was having production issues, so there literally wasn't enough to feed her son by itself for the first month.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
Breast feeding can be such a minefield. It was so hard with our first kid, and got easier with the others. But still, it can be really hard and all of them had some formula here and there. Trying to relax enough to realise that it's not the end of the world can be so difficult.
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
It's really tricky, because the way to increase milk production is to continue feeding: the tactile stimulus from feeding is what stimulates prolactin and oxytocin production which leads to more milk. But I think the key is that mothers shouldn't be stigmatized due to their feeding choices, which I think a lot of breastfeeding advocates aren't partcularly sensitive of. Sure, there are a lot of benefits to breastfeeding, but a lot of those benefits can be realized with a limited course of breastfeeding.
- Victor Ganata
(My comments on breastfeeding advocates are, admittedly, limited to my experiences rounding in newborn nurseries during residency and my mom's anecdotes from working as a nurse on a mother-baby unit—she's not a big fan of the drive towards exclusive breastfeeding and she'd frequently tell me about all the mothers who were reduced to tears because they had problems with feeding their baby.)
- Victor Ganata
The more the baby suckles, the more milk is produced. That's the general rule. But if you have sore, cracked and bleeding nipples, are ill, or in the throes of painful mastitis then knowing you can have a break can mean the difference between carrying on and giving up all together. It's really hard to be kind to yourself when you feel like giving a bottle is failure, so I'm all for pragmatism and understanding.
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
I agree with you Victor. Lots of my friends have had children here in the Bay Area and lost of them have had huge amount of pressure put on them to breastfeed only. Some pushed themselves too hard when signs of problems (cracking, mastitis, etc) showed and tried to power through, only making the problems worse. If they had done a little of both they may have been able to treat the...

"...no matter where I looked 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Disney Princesses, from their beautiful dresses, perfect hair, gorgeous voices and most with ideal love stories in the mix you can’t help but become entranced with the characters. But it got me thinking, they’re just characters, a writers tale of a princess (most before 1998)…an unrealistic fantasy for most girls (Yay Kate Middleton!). It started me thinking about all the REAL women for my daughter to know about and look up too, REAL women who without ever meeting Emma have changed her life for the better. My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters. Very cool and cute, bur are annual portraits a "thing" now?
- Soup in a TARDIS
My mother got annual portraits when she was a kid in the 40's. The photographer did a full page ad of her through the years, beginning from when she was a toddler.

I had annual portraits from when I was a kid. I know lots of people who do and I know people who don't. In this case the photographer is the kids mother, so she gets more than annual photographs.

An extremely rare white rhino, of which there are only four left in the entire world, in the Kenyan Ol Pejeta reservation, roams about the plains flanked by armed bodyguards - Imgur - http://imgur.com/gallery/trLr6
John's post made me look up some figures about how many are actually left in the world and found this which makes me both sad and happy, but mainly sad that the human race is still so ignorant, i don't mean that in a rude way, but seriously, we are failing to educate people, i know ancient traditions are hard to deal with, but it's 2013 for goodness sakes :'(

Also so strange that the Northern White Rhino and the Sourthern White Rhino are not sub-categories of the White Rhino species but that the Northern White Rhino is a species of it's own separated genetically for over a million years. I have had the privilege of being up close and personal with the less at risk Southern White Rhino and they are just amazing and wonderful creatures. It makes me so sad whenever I hear about any poaching of any type of these creatures. :(

Reading the comments on the article/image is awesome. "I would pet the shit out of that beautiful rhino." "He looks so epic and full of wisdom." "fuck humans, that he NEEDS to be guarded."

Pretty much. You start with one set of monsters and to be able to play with any other set of monsters you have to pay. The one set of monsters is fine, but even the computer plays with the other monster sets, and only being able to use the one set gets boring after a while. Also new maps cost. I don't mind paying in app, but their fee system is way high. Even buying the bundle that has everything in it is $8 which for an iphone game is too much in my opinion.
- Rachel Lea Fox
At least it's not Super Monster Bros. Knock off of Mario and Pokemon IP + in app fees for a lot of things of $20-100. http://www.ign.com/videos...
- Gimminy
Jimminy, gak that is horrible! I just know that in a game I would want to play through game center with other friends, I wouldn't want all of us dependent on paying that much money. The $8 is for the pack with all the current items, they call it Season 1, so they intend to have more seasons which I assume will cost similar. Can't do it.

Mom back in hospital apparently pneumonia. But we've gotten better at the sibling rotation plan down there so we already have next 24hours set for attendants. I had to give up my Killers tickets for tonight but I have seen them before and my friends haven't so it's okay.
Oh thanks for asking. She is home now which makes her happy and everyone else gets a little more sleep. Family rotation in hospital worked perfectly. Thanks all!

Oh my sweet baby kitten. Rachel, you capture the essence of all your fosters with your photography skills. I would love for you to make a foster calendar because 2014 needs one and so do I!

LOL Janet. I will think about it. Most of these are just iPhone photos, I don't know if they get big enough for printing. I need to get good photos for these guys. For a year or more I have been planning to submit some of my photography to Getty Images Stock Photography (through Flickr) to see if I could sell some images. 3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.

0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.

So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!

1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah
12.23 (844 / 69 ) I guess I take my likes seriously ;)
- Chris Myles
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
Likes are down relative to comments, which matches my much lower frequency of liking. I'm a more selective liker than ever.
- Micah
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah
When I first saw this: 1.91 Sept 28: 1.94
- MiniMage
536 comments in the last month has me at .8736...still creeping toward 1.00
- Bren
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren
In 4 days it will be 1 year since my first recorded stat here. My comments/like were almost a 1:1 ratio then. Now comments are almost double likes for me.
- Micah
75,415 comments/1,286 likes = 58.64 - i wish the auto inserted comments didn't get counted... the true number is probably much much close ot my number of likes
- Chris Heath
1.97%. thanks again micah, this has been a great metric to measure my first year here on ff. As the year went (this being the first record of me being here that i've found): , 6.43%:1.25%:1.97%
- chaz2b
Chris, Bren, thank you. And chaz2b, thank you too - glad it's a special marker for you. :)
- Micah
63.58 (97,534/1,534) -- interesting that my last three digits are the same there, eh? (note, i already posted a month or two ago when i first saw this thread)
- Chris Heath
0.87 (3770/4312), so I'm either getting more commenty or less likey. [0.74 (1970/2667) was what I previously reported back in June]
- In Search of Gender
Last year my comments were around 7000 and likes around 2500, for a ratio of 2.80. I consciously chose to do more liking over the last year. As of today my comments number 10,782 and likes number 7,666, for a ratio of 1.41.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Jason, Stephen - cool. Thanks for keeping updated here. :)
- Micah
Okay, Micah. <----I had to resist the urge not to post that because I know it's going to up my comment count. ;)
- Jenny H
But how many of those primordial, high interest posts are still active. Uh huh. :)
- Micah
Thanks, Morton. BTW, when you posted in February, it was exactly 0.13 also.
- Micah
Jenny, resistance is futile; embrace the rising tide of comments.
- Micah
Comments are more difficult and time consuming than Likes. I'd be happy about a high comment:likes ratio except that many are surely imported from feeds, while every Like is manual.
- Mike Chelen
it has changed to 2.2256 now as Sep, 6 2010.Labor Day. :) I added the date for future references.

Jason: we would love to host FriendFeed but any hoster will screw up from time to time so I would rather win their business on the strength of our technology and service. SteVe, as someone who was initially skeptical that i could live in a house with a 8 foot stucco wall around, I have to say it is actually incredibly liberating. Thanks Rachel that's what I was hoping as a best case outcome. Since 25% of our property is currently the lawn on front yard I am leaning towards enclosing it in some way to add essentially another outdoor room especially being in So Cal. The debate has come down to the type of fencing, open, short, tall, complete. So when I saw this idea yesterday it was a new direction to think of.

If I didn't live remote and without neighbors I would want this as my back yard privacy oasis. Block parties are to mingle with your neighbors, not when you want to hang out in your yard.

SteVe, if you are up there visiting Anne or anyone and you want to see what we have I'm happy to show you. This design for a wall would be prettier than my wall, but the wood would take more maintenance. I think it would be worth it though!

Yeah Anne that's the hard part of front yard work dealing with city. I think my argument if they give any gruff is "look my house is purple don't you think covering some of it with a pretty wood is an improvement in your narrow minded eyes?" Actually a few peeps have block walls out front so I think we'll be okay but I will have to do the whole annoying permit thing. Annoying only in that I build stronger than code anyway so you ain't doing me any favors other than slowing me down.

Oh great, looks like there's another specialist in my future. Thyroid stimulating hormone is borked, and so is thyroid. Endocrinologists here I come. In other news liver is normal...I think I'll go work on that :-)
The FOB has a large comic book section. Things like these cars are always in Comic Book Alley.

The Mystery Machine is always parked in the Fry's parking lot in Palo Alto. Or at least it used to be, I haven't been there in a few years. And it wasn't as shiny as this one. :)

Comic books provide raw intellectual properties for movies & TV shows.

My very good friend is in the middle of the lockdown in Watertown with her husband and 2yo. Last I heard the helicopters seemed to have zeroed in about a half mile from her house. I have knots in my stomach. :(
Yeah, I was getting lots of updates on Facebook about it. Apparently they lifted the "stay inside" and 15 minutes later caught him. Very scary. My friends were .3 miles from where they took him, they heard the gun fire. But they are safe and very relieved it is over.

"For those of you that have your heads stuck under rocks, which apparently is the majority of this chapter, we have been FUCKING UP in terms of night time events and general social interactions with Sigma Nu. I've been getting texts on texts about people LITERALLY being so fucking AWKWARD and so fucking BORING. If you're reading this right now and saying to yourself "But oh em gee [first name redacted], I've been having so much fun with my sisters this week!", then punch yourself in the face right now so that I don't have to fucking find you on campus to do it myself. I do not give a flying fuck, and Sigma Nu does not give a flying fuck, about how much you fucking love to talk to your sisters. You have 361 days out of the fucking year to talk to sisters, and this week is NOT, I fucking repeat NOT ONE OF THEM. This week is about fostering relationships in the Greek community, and that's not fucking possible if you're going to stand around and talk to each other and not our matchup....

Well, that certainly backed up the impressions I already had of the "Greek system".

(I was greek. it was fun, but I also didn't take it sooper seriusly like apparently many folks at other places do?)

I've definitely heard of (and from) folks who were in fraternities and sororities who loved it, who had great experiences, etc. It probably wouldn't be the right place for me and that letter reinforced that for me. (However, while reading it I thought that it might single-handedly reboot the National Lampoon's Animal House franchise.)

Spidra, We had a professional music Sorority and Fraternity at my school. They were awesome. They had houses and parties, but overall they were about music. Knowing a lot of the people who were in those groups, you would have fit right in. This girl would not have. I was in the Honorary Theatre Fraternity (co-ed) We didn't have a house, but we were still awesome!
