I think that its possible now for bands to distribute for themselves, do their own marketing, and produce their own albums without the help of the labels because it takes a lot less money to do these things now. You are right that they are going to have to dabble outside of their expertise a bit and take on some of the responsibilities of the label like marketing and such, but I don't think that is such a big deal thats probably what they did before they got discovered.
