Good ta, hot and humid today here. You? Where was this taken btw?
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm fine, a boring day at home. :) It was taken last year in Rio de Janeiro. :)
- Carlina Xavier
Ah, very nice. :-) Boring day at home here too, might be travelling to Newbury tomorrow though, to pick up a laptop for work. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Ah that's nice. I'm sort of stuck at home. Thanks to the *cough* beautiful *cough* weather in our beloved country. :)
- Carlina Xavier
Hehe, they were saying August was going to be a far better month than July was. Not so sure they think that now but certainly hot today. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes it is too hot, when it's hot and rainy I can't stand it.
- Carlina Xavier
Just like it is right now, hot but raining. :-( Thank goodness I didn't need to travel today but hope the weather is OK for my trip up to London tomorrow.

Although its name implies tongue twisters or dancing dwarfs, Prix Pictet is a distinguished international photography award for artists focused on environmental sustainability and has just announced their shortlist. Last year’s winner, Benoit Aquin, documented the effects and creation of deserts in China. This year’s 12 nominees depict the destruction of the environment through the exploitation of the world’s resources.

This is my first processed and uploaded attempt at a HDR image. Its a shame about the ducks moving in the shot, i tried to clean this up in Photoshop but they were left lifeless unlike the rest of the shot. I should really invest in a tripod as well.. Anyone else tried hdr shots, and do you have any good tips?

Here's the group's avatar too, feel free to post your thoughts and suggestions. Personally some of the out of focus foreground is too distracting.

I do like the composition, however, I tend to critique pictures on whether I'll hang them on my wall or put it in a frame. This particular picture doesn't grab me. I think this photo might be a little more powerful in B&W (you will probably hear me say this a lot in this critique room). B&W might lower the distraction of the background and bring out the bush in the foreground a bit more.
- Justin Korn
Justin, I went with colour with this one as, from the set I took at the time, a lot were converted to B&W already, like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol - fair enough, but just because the rest are in B&W doesn't mean this one shouldn't be :)
- Justin Korn
This is a slightly adjusted photo of a shot I took awhile back which is my favourite pic and was published to a newspaper (see here for original: http://flickr.com/photos.... I've cropped the top and left a little and increased the saturation throughout. Also I've lightened Kaz (my dog) a little as he was a bit too dark. What does everyone think? I still think the sharp foreground branches are a little distracting?"

I think it's an incredible result. The sharp branches do take some of my focus and I'd probably like the pic better if they weren't there, but I don't think they ruin it by any means.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Kol - I think this is a great photograph of your dog. I really like the changes you made here from the original and I agree, I don't think the branches take away from the picture. If I were to get nit picky, the only thing I would change is adding a little extra buffer to the bottom of the picture below the dog's paws. Overall, great photo!
- Justin Korn
Justin, yep I would too but that's the limit of the photo, so poor composition on my part for the original shot but capturing Kaz standing still is a chore by itself. To get this AND the sunset is a miracle, hehe. :-)
