It has been a very easy week as I had my last practical for my first year on Friday and so have only had 6hours in total of lectures this week. So I met with my personal tutor on Monday to discuss my options for next year and have been packing to go home. Not much revision this week as I have been busy sorting out going home.I have a little work over the Easter I am planning to do it early so I can focus more on my revision for exams.

#bs1008 revision lecture involved in one section the distribution of animals and plants. This article explains how some plants are distributed as the fish in this case can carry large amounts of seeds to long distances.

Lots of revision this week as I seem to have a lot more free time. I am having difficulties choosing my modules that I want to do next year but I found that the second years who still use friendfeed comments very helpful and so I have arranged a meeting with my tutor. Did get back any work this week so no feedback but I just did my #bs1011 assessment for this week and I found it quite difficult. Tomorrow's #bs1011 is the last one so I am going to do it early so its out of the way.

In #bs1008 we were discussing a lot about the behaviour of the monarch butterfly this article gives more detail about where the butterfly lives.

An easy week this week finished all of my work quite early in #bs1011 got 100% on my assessment and for #bs1008 finished the work on the same day and other than that there was little work. So this week so a revision week feeling more confident on earlier modules. Got my module handbook choices for next year debating what subjects to take so I am going to set up a meeting with my personal tutor to discuss. Also got back some work seems that I need to put more detail into my introductions for my practical reports.

this article talks about koala males bellowing in the night possible to attract females in #bs1008 we are learning about adaptations animals have the article suggests the reason for the bellowing at night is because during the day it is to hot for the koalas and so they sleep therefore there is no point in bellowing in the day.

This week I have been more on top of my work finished my #bs1009 essay and used a lot of references and I found that the lecture notes were very helpful in writing the essay and finished my last #bs1013 practical report after the lecture. I have found so far with this new timetable with less hours I have more time to do work and feel more relaxed just finished the #bs1011 assignment didn't do to great but I think I understand where I went wrong so hopefully now I know for next time. My aim for next week is to complete assignments more as I get them to give me more time to ask for help if necessary and to start going over the lecture notes for this semester.

In #bs1005 we have been learning about gene transfer and recombinant DNA. In this article the gene Sub1A has been inserted into the rice plant's DNA and so it causes the plant to be able to deal with a lot more water and so it can survive floods and increases the plant's ability to recover from drought.

This week was a very long week filled with a lot of assignments. Two essays and three practical reports. I think it was more difficult as I left the work late to start so next time when I get assignments I am going to start them as soon as possible to avoid my work piling up again. Just one more essay to do now for #bs1009 and two practical reports and hopefully I can get back on track. Looking forward to next week as we are starting physiology so this will give me some insight as to what to look forward to from my course.

Lots of work to do for next week but at least I managed to do the #BS1011 assignment early so that is one thing out of the way nearly finished my #BS1013 essay just need to re-read it and make any adjustments. In order to help me finish my work efficiently I will create a timetable with the different things that I need to do so I can get them all done in time. This week has been a busy week trying to sort out the books I need to write my essays and doing practical reports. I received my first practical report back the feedback was very helpful.

The article is about different marine research centres coming together in order to make it easier to do genetic experiments as we have seen in the #bs1005 practicals it is relatively easy to do experiments on drosophila but from our #bs1013 lectures we have learnt that most of the world's genetic diversity is in the sea.

This week as been more productive than the last. Getting back exams results as really motivated to work harder. As I passed my exams but did not do as well as I hoped. So this week I have been going to more help sessions and finding them very informative. Also I have started working on both my #BS1005 and #BS1009 essays in order to give me more time to read over them before I have to give them in. The only thing I am struggling with is trying to find good relevant references. Therefore my target for this week is to find useful material and if I'm still getting stuck to ask during my tutorials for assistance.

In our #bs1005#bs1009 practicals and we must wear gloves and change the pipette tip each time we use a different soultion. This article show that if we are not strict in the way we go about experiments we can cause errors to arise. In the article's case someone may be told that they have a gene which makes them have and increase risk of getting cancer when they actually don't!

This week has been more productive than last week I have been research around my presentation topic from #BS1013 and trying to find references for the tutorial essay with limited sucess but hopefully next week I will be more sucessful by asking my tutorial teacher for advice and using more specific key words on the library search engine. In #BS1009 this weekend I am aiming to finish all of the questions that we have done so far in the practical report. This week I have managed to stay on top of my note making outside of lectures so tomorrow #BS1013 practical should be a little easier than last week and hopefully I will be able to understand the practical report fully.

During #BS1005 lectures we have been learing about gene expression last week and the differ tyoes this week we have been learning more about the positon of genes during mitosis and meiosis. This article gives more detail about the expression of genes and postioning.

This week has been quite difficult getting use to going back to university but I think I handled it well. I have been writing up lecture notes and organizing them into folders as I have been going along. In practicals I have been finishing early and understanding a lot of the material. However in the #BS1013 practical I struggled a lot so next week I am going to research more around the practical so I am properly prepared for it on Friday.

I tend to struggle to learn the different phases of mitosis this video is and interesting way to help learn these phases and more about chromosomes and DNA. A good introduction to #BS1005.

There has been a new discovery of five new genes which can increase the risk of an individual having Parkinson's disease. In #BS1005 we are learning more about how genes can lead to diseases such as sickle cell anemia. In learning more about which genes increase the risk of having Parkinson's disease it is also possible to learn more about how to cure the disease.

I have yet to complete my final assessment for #BS1010 and blackboard is not working. I don't know what to do it due in for tomorrow. Does anyone know when it will start working again?
In #BS1012 we were shown how bees use the waggle dance to show other bees where the food source is in relation to the sun. This article shows that bees cannot do the waggle dance as well when they are tired. A short but interesting article.

I'm not sure if the powerpoint presentation on #BS1012 plant lecture yesterday has all of the link to the videos. I found the video involving wild orchids which mimic female wasps if anyone wanted to see it to help understand yesterday's presentation.

In our second last animal #BS1012 lecture we discussed about arthropods such as bees which use the waggle dance to show where food sources are relative to the sun. This article is interesting as it shows how insects such as bees see through UV shades and so opens up a new spectrum that we would not normally be able to see.

I predicted the future. Just joking but I thought it was funny today that this came up today(14/12/10) in our #BS1012. It was good because I found out more about how bees see before the lecture then it made it easier for me to understand during the lecture.

#CH1070 test today went fine I hope couldn't get my results because the computer crashed just as I was about to find them out. I'm so nervous to find out what I got. Hope everyone did well.
Last #CH1070 lecture today. Thought it was strange that they chose to do electrochemical cells last because when I did it at A-level I found it quite difficult so for thoughs people who have not done chemistry A-level it might be more difficult for them to learn in one day. Well see how the chemistry test goes doing lots of revision ^_^
I agree, it was one of the harder concepts at A Level, the people without Chemistry A Level might struggle with it with such a short amount of time to understand it in!

#FridayReflection What is the most important thing I have learned this term?
The most important thing I have learned this term is how to write notes in lectures. This includes prinitng off powerpoint presentations if the lecturer uses a lot of diagrams in their lectures such as in #CH1070 and writing down more of what the lecturer is saying rather than trying to write everything that is on the slide. With these new skills I believe that I am very prepared for future lectures but I am still looking for more good tips.

Finished my #BS1010 assessment for this week and did well again I think I have achieved the pass mark for the overall module now. Next up #BS1015 pub quiz should be interesting.
I found today #BS1012 lecture on plants today interesting. I do not normally like learning about plants but I liked finding out about how the green aquatic plants adapted into becoming terrestrial plants and find out that there was three different types of plant (grey, red and green). A very informative lecture ^_^
yes interesting lecture never thought plants would be grey...

I Know..i just posted something like this..At alevel and GCSE plants seemed so boring but today was actually interesting. :)

yeah, i liked seeing how they evolved out the water, and with all the sperm and egg stuff i kind of forgot we were even talking about plants halfway through!i think this module will give me a new perspective on plants anyway.

During our #BS1012 lectures this week we have been talking about how insects are very important and how if you put all the insects in the world and then put all the vertebrates in the world together the total biomass of insects would be much greater than the biomass of vertebrates. In this article it talks about how a single specie of ants is responsible for the survival of more than 300 species. This includes birds which feed off of the arthropods which have been left after the ants have swarmed.

Just finished #BS1010.The help session really helps me to sit down and do the assessment and sometimes when I just need a little help it good to have someone to there.
#FridayReflection Google Reader - addiction or annoyance? How many feeds are you subscribed to on Google Reader and how often do you go there? Could you live without it?
I think it more of an annoyance to me but it depends on how busy I am so if i'm checking everyday then it not so bad because there about 60 new articles but if i've left it for a couple of days then its becomes more troublesome as I have to sit and read through about 300 articles which takes a long time. However i find some really interesting articles but most of the time they are not related to anything i have done that week so then it becomes more of an annoyance but i always star the articles i find interesting just in case. I am currently subscribed to about 20 feeds and I could live without Google Reader but its helpful for new information.
