The "manufacturers' suggested retail prices" quoted on "The Price Is Right" make me think that these manufacturers are a buncha dicks. - http://tkot.tumblr.com/post...
"The manufacturer doesn’t make a product and then tell the retailer how much they ought to charge for it. Retailers hold much more power than manufacturers; generally, they pressure suppliers to meet their price and to constantly lower costs, putting the burden on the suppliers to figure out how to do so (often by reducing wages). The idea that manufacturers are able to tell Macy’s or...

Really interesting April. I knew that Wal-Mart established the pattern of large stores being able to demand a price from manufacturers. I hadn't realized that "msrp" was also the doing of sellers.
- Heather
I used to work as a merchandiser for a discount retailer back in the 80's (Woolworths). The company ordered stuff prepriced by the manufacturer with a price we requested, so we could put our own lower price on it, that way the consumer thought they were getting a good deal. We not only told them what to print, we told them where on the packaging to put it. It was always in the upper...

So guess who is requesting those prices quoted on "The Price Is Right". In this case it isn't the manufacturers that are the dicks...it's the people that run the game show. They are setting their own prices in an attempt to make the game more difficult to win. They are also fooling the consumer sitting at home that may remember that ridiculous price when they hit the store later and see...

Y'all can unsubscribe from me, block me, hate me and curse my name to the twin suns... but... the Millennium Falcon has always been a bit meh and overrated to me......... The Executor Star Dreadnought, now there's a ship!
I'd love to see the Executor do the Kessel Run in 40 parsecs, less 12. There's no way a ship that big and slow would be able to skirt the gravity wells closely enough to complete it in a useful distance.
- Matthew DeVries
So we are back to the 'it can run fast' argument... fair enough...
- Johnny Worthington
Let's see: it takes maybe 3 people to fly the Falcon. If you divided up the crew of a Star Dreadnought into 3-person teams, how many Falcons could you have?
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
Johnny, you see that satellite dish sticking up there making it slightly less aerodynamic? That picks up free porn from 37 different worlds.
- Joe Pierce
ha3rvey... That works in reverse too... How many Falcons would you need (and therefore the man power) to have the same fire power and kick-assedness of the Executor?
- Johnny Worthington
Did the Dreadnought even go to Kessel???
- WorldofHiglet
The Executor was taken out by the pussyest ship ever made in the Star Wars universe. Show me one spot you could crash a Segway into on a Nimitz Class Carrier to destroy it, and I'll maybe respect the Executor.
- Matthew DeVries
I can't even tell you the number of times I took out the shield generators on these pieces of junk on Xwing and Xwing vs Tiefighter. YOU ARE SO VERY WRONG!!!!
- WorldofHiglet
I agree with DeVries the way the Executor went down was ridiculous. BORG CUBESHIP FTW
- Mo Kargas
No need for blushes, Joe! Can I take it you played Xwing back in the day?
- WorldofHiglet
now ya'll are making me with that Star Wars Galaxies didn't suck now. The Jump to Lightspeed space flight expansion was a ton of fun.
- Joe Pierce
If I could install it on my PC I would do it RIGHT NOW.

Matthew... The top speed of an A-Wing is 1,3000 km/h (in atmosphere). Now the command was also given to "Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer!" so they were under fire from basically the whole entire Rebel fleet. So if a Nimitz Class Carrier was under fire from several enemy ships and aircraft all at the same time and I chucked a Segway at the windows in the bridge at about...

- Johnny Worthington
but would the Nimitz suddenly roll over like a beheaded cow? i doubt it. as far back as WWII a carrier could keep going with the bridge blown to bits.
- Joe Silence
Just out of interest, how many actual Tie fighters did the Falcon kill? I dare say it's in the teens

You really want to argue about the kill ratio between a cargo freighter with two guns and a fleet flagship?
- Steven Perez
from IM
No, but you seem to want to argue how kick ass a cargo freighter is compared to a fleet flagship... So we're both pissing into the wind
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
*sigh* All right: said freighter evaded an invading ground force, several Star Destroyers, and said flagship, all the while doing so under repairs, snuck her crew onto a battle station the size of a planet, survived two battles with said battle station, shot down any number of opposing enemies and was instrumental in destroying said battle station - twice. Said flagship ... got knocked...

Any ship can be awesome when it has the benefit of an entire army to refit and upgrade it at will. The truly great ships in science fiction are often held together with spit and bailing wire. Serenity, Millennium Falcon, the TARDIS, ...

Let's also be clear that the Ewoks beat the Death Star 2 (there was more than one ship in the core) and Luke blew up Death Star 1 after the Falcon shot 2... that's right 2 tie fighters... BIG HELP THERE!!!
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Remind me again: which ship were the Ewoks flying? :D And Han only shot one TIE fighter. The other one panicked. THAT'S RIGHT - PANICKED. Quality, not quantity.
- Steven Perez
from IM
No Ewoks blowing up the shield? The Falcon is just Billy Dee scratching his nuts. There was more than one ship at the core so it's not like ONLY the Falcon could do it.
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Wedge Antilles got loads of kills in his little one man fighter over the years.
- Joe Silence
Right, this would be the same Billy Dee who fought his superior officer to give Han and the Care Bears more time while they were all being shredded by the half-finished Death Star and a fleet of Star Destroyers. Just hanging around.

We only played the demo on the Xbox. I was unimpressed. We found it's more fun to play the actual board games.
- Admiral Anika
you can't hurl a virtual game board into the air in disgust. Thus it is not for me.
- Joe Pierce
We do love our real board games. OK. That's enough for me to not pursue it. Thanks Anika and Joe!
- Josh Haley
I've actually never played it, but my friend who also did the XBL demo steered me clear.
- Joe Pierce
I thought that the pain of setting up/cleaning up would be mitigated by doing it online. It was more annoying on Xbox because for some games we couldn't all play at once, which was silly. I don't know if the full game makes it more accessible to everyone in the same place.
- Admiral Anika
I note with mild disapproval that you never write reviews here.

As a former English major, I approve of Norton Anthologies.

Hivemind help: At the store, looking for boots to replace the shin-length ones I have and are falling apart. Kinda leaning toward shorter ones that I could wear either over or under jeans. But I have no style. These, acceptable?
I like the buckle, but that won't show if I wear them under jeans. OTOH, not sure I can pull off jeans skinny enough to go under boots. Conundrum.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
from email
I like those - the shape along the bottom is a good, classic boot style for pants you'd wear them "under." They can also go with skirts/tights combos if you're wary of finding jeans that will fit them OK.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Have to get "Boot Cut' jeans to go over the boot don't know how the buckle look under the jeans
- WarLord
That's true, Jennifer. I do wear skirts to church a lot, and I think these would go good with that. WarLord, I usually wear bootcut jeans, and they're wide enough at the bottom I don't think the buckle will show through. I need some new jeans, too, though. Maybe I'll branch out and try different cuts and see what happens.

Did you find new jeans? Glad you got the boots! They're cute and will look great with your jeans. I hope you got a new belt for your new jeans! (I got a new pair of jeans, as well - now I have three whole pairs that fit! And a CUTE sweater).
- Lis Miller
Lis, leave my belt alone! :p And no, didn't find jeans. The skinny jeans from New York & Co actually fit really well, except for being way too long. That may be a problem everywhere, though, and I may just have to hem some. Checking Old Navy tomorrow.

I will not leave that belt alone;) Oooh, I saw Chucks on sale and thought of you and how maybe that will be your birthday present because now that I have some, I'm obviously too hipster for you :p Definitely check Old Navy - I tried some of their skinny jeans on and they were RIDICULOUSLY short. They also had "short" sized jeans. I was at an outlet, though (omg, outlets are the best things ever. No, really).

I kind of wonder how much you can trust Recount. My DPS varies anywhere between 1.5k-3k. I used to think that it was because of the disparity in buffs depending on group composition, or maybe we were running an undead-heavy instance, but now I'm not so sure.

@Jeff cool, so no aggregators really?
- Caleb Elston
@Andrew Do you do much filtering on Digg? Just the tech areas for instance?
- Caleb Elston
Yeah the Tech page is set as my starting point.
- Andrew
@Caleb, No, I don't like aggregators. Even for blogs, things like Google Reader and Bloglines annoy me.
- Jeff Harbert
@Caleb - One exception to that is Popurls. That one's handy.
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff Interesting. Is there something in particular about them you dislike?
- Caleb Elston
Yeah I barely look at Google Reader any more, it's just like a huge inbox you have to crawl through now.
- Andrew
@Caleb - Readers don't give me blog comments, for one. I also find that the look and feel of a website will help me remember where I first read something. Blog themes are also usually stripped out and made homogenous by readers. Don't care for that.
- Jeff Harbert
I've gotten nearly all my breaking news this year from Twitter.
- Jeff Harbert
I learned about Twitter on TWiT. TechTV and it's spawn are one important story of the decade.
- Jason R
Twitter definitely provides most of the news/links that I click on. I prefer the layout/design of Original Signal to Popurls, just a shame it seems to have been abandoned. Only annoyance is no way to turn off the popups when you hover on a link.

My last employer had a floppy-drive Mavica.
- Jeff Harbert
we had a mavica for a trip to vegas with the family. BACKUPS could be a story of the decade. Digital is now practical because of BACKUPS.
- Elliot Christenson
I know Carbonite is a sponsor but I gotta say their product for Mac really sucks. It doesn't backup video automatically! You have to manually select video files to backup. I switched to Backblaze. We should try to get them as a TWiT Sponsor!
- Ken Wiesner
Am I the only one that thinks location services like Foursquare are dumb?
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff hate to disagree, but I think location is actually a core element to be shared. Just like Photos, Video, Text...location is next.
- Caleb Elston
@Caleb - but it's so transitory. So I check in at a bar - I won't be there an hour later.
- Jeff Harbert
People recommend you for the "Crunk" badge. :)
- Ken Wiesner
@Jeff that's true, but tweets are similarly ephemeral, but we now have much better realtime alerting systems so you can actually know about that right away.
- Caleb Elston
@Caleb - And it also does me no good to know where anyone non-local to me is. Scoble is having dinner at the Ritz - I'm across the country, so what use is that to me?
- Jeff Harbert
@Jeff, bingo - and if you're in a small town, who cares that you just popped down to the gas station in your pyjamas?
- Andrew
@Jeff that might be true for Robert, since you don't really know him, but if it were your son or brother it might be interesting, a conversation starter for the next time you speak.
- Caleb Elston
@Andrew - Exactly, which is why I think these services are dumb.
- Jeff Harbert
@Caleb - I'm actually acquainted with Robert. It still does me no good to know he's having dinner at the Ritz because he's nowhere near me.

@Héctor - Leo mentioned that in yesterday's TWiG. He said he'd rather get a little email from correct listeners like you than wait a year and get 10x more from people who think it begins 1-1-10.

"Eugene Curran "Gene" Kelly (August 23, 1912 – February 2, 1996) was an American dancer, actor, singer, film director and producer, and choreographer. A major exponent of 20th century filmed dance, Kelly was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style, his good looks and the likeable characters that he played on screen. Although he is probably best known today for his performance in Singin' in the Rain, he was a dominant force in Hollywood musical films from the mid 1940s until the demise of this form in the late 1950s. His many innovations transformed the Hollywood musical film, and he is credited with almost singlehandedly making the ballet form commercially acceptable to film audiences.["
