panasonic ftw any luminex. only because canon pictures always have this odd yellow-ish tint and the post processing is a PAIN. plus panasonics have this anti-shake feature that is OH so bad ass (and i have a powershot and an xti) - Mona N.
I bought the 890IS and like it. flaws: too much plastic and the power button is weird - RAPatton
I have the 870. It has image stablization, 8megapix, and a huge view screen. Love it. - Christian Anderson via fftogo
image stabilization, that's what it's called. i only knew the name in Japanese. Thank you Christian :) - Mona N.
Wait....Chris, have a look at the Lumix Range. Very good cameras. I have the FZ30. :) - Toastpaint
Sorry to spam your thread Chris, but my friend's Lumix Food pictures http://bit.ly/panasonicLUMIXfo... - Mona N.
I have to agree with the folks who are pimping the Panasonic Lumix line. I have a Canon XTi, but our point and shoots are all Panasonic Lumix and we're getting great pictures. - David Thomas
Go with either the Powershot SD870 IS (not the 890) or Panasonic Lumix TZ5. The 870 is smaller but the TZ5 has one sweet zoom range. Both start at 28mm which gives you a bit of a wide angle that no other P&S compacts have which is why I like these two. - saeba
Canon PowerShot A720 IS 8MP / 6x Optical Zoom Digital Camera $169.99 shipped at Dell Home - http://accessories.us.dell.com... - Bradley McSpinn

http://dealnews.com/digital-ca... Filter by Canon ...great deals abound! And yes, go for the IS models for the clear anti-shake photos! - Glenn Batuyong
I have a little SD750 Elph. Fitd in my short pocket & takes amazing quality. You may want soething geekier but I really love the camera. - shelisrael1
Even the cheapest ones (A590 IS) take good pictures. Canon is good. - Dillon K. Hoops
I have heard good things about the Canon Powershot G9. But I have the S3 IS and I love it. It does not shoot in the RAW format however. The G9 does. - Jim Williams
Have a PowerShot Elph SD600 and a S5is. The Elph is great to take anywhere, the S5 is excellent for the "serious" shots. - Jared B. Luther
Chris, if you go with the 870, which you should, grab it at Costco (kirkland or woodinville). Costco has a great return policy. They give you cash back. Return for any reason. - Christian Anderson via fftogo
The G9 ! that is all - Vox
I have a G9, but they're all good. My wife had a Panasonic Lumix, but dropped it for my old Ixus (Elph or SD depending on market). The G9 is great if you want RAW images to get the best quality, but it's big, heavy and expensive, so not the best option if you don't care about RAW and full manual control. - Michael Randall via twhirl
Another vote for the G9. :) Currently the ultimate PowerShot for image quality and controls. If you don't feel the need for RAW shooting, then the S5 IS is probably the next in line as far as pro features go. Actually, I've found the G9 to be light and easy to carry, certainly a lot more manageable than my previous S3 IS. - Alan Ralph
My favorite PowerShot of all time has been the A650IS because of the Vari-Angle LCD screen. The specs are very similar to the Canon G9 but a lot smaller. - Michael Narciso via NoiseRiver
I'd love a Powershot but my Panasonic Lumix DCM-FX3 does everything i need it to do. - Zach Underwood

The worst part is if you happen to be typing when it pops up. I think the default is 'yes, reboot now', which is pressed by hitting space. I end up leaving the prompt on the screen, just pushing it off to the corner so it's almost gone. Lived that way for about a fortnight until rebooting this morning. - Michael Randall via twhirl

Fortunately for me, I haven't run into that kind of attitude in my Orlando area stores. However, the prices are retail and the selection is limited. Unless local stores embrace the Internet to expand their customer base, they're doomed to this business model. One store (Harmon Photo) does provide me with good service and also has a great printing and training range of services. - William Beem
I've never purchased from a local store; and my dad used to own 2 of them in Cleveland, Ohio (Laurel Camera...since out of business though). I feel bad but I frequent local stores to test out new equipment and then purchase it online. - Benjamin Golub
I've had the same experience with camera stores in Seattle. They need to be more like my local fly fishing shop. He accepts that many people will buy rods/reels/etc online. While he stocks those, he focuses on the little things that are needed and lots and lots of customer service. I can't count the number of times he's spent 20 minutes helping me pick out flies - or shown me how to tie a new pattern. The result is, I buy from him simply because I NEED him to stay in business. - Diane Ensey
I have found a local store with good service, but it's about 45 minutes from where I live. There aren't many around, and the Wolf Camera's of the world are no better than Wal Marts. - TreJack
Back when I asked about the Canon 400D at our local (Tiverton, UK) camera shop (Cameras Plus), they told me they didn't have it, and couldn't get it at a price I'd like, but were still happy to spend a while telling me how good it was, and how happy I'd be with it if I went off and bought one online. The result is that I go in there fairly often, and have bought quite a few bits from them since. I settled on a Nikon D40 some time later, and have recently added a Canon G9. - Michael Randall
I'm not sure that I agree with the practice, but I've got a friend who goes to the local store and has the salesperson help him pick out a camera, and then goes online to find the cheapest price. More and more I think better resources are online nowadays, so you can just do all of the shopping online and skip the lousy clerks altogether. - Eric Florenzano
By the way, if you ever have the chance to go to B&H's bricks and mortar store in Manhattan you'll find that they have a *huge* amount of knowledge about their products and will take the time to make sure you get the right thing. Somehow that makes me feel better about buying from them online, even if they won't let me do it on a Saturday. - Kevin Fox
Tullys sucks. I recently went to buy some accessory at a Tullys store at Northgate Mall, Seattle. The person in the store behaved as if he is doing a service for me. It is time these people realize that it is pure business and they gotta treat their customers with due respect. - Krishnan Hussein Subraman
I visit a local (Long Island) shop when I want trival, relatively inexpensive accessories. But for bodies, lenses and anything it's worth the trip into Manhattan to B&H because 1) I get the better price, and 2) both B&H and Adorama store your purchasing history in their computer systems, giving you bargaining leverage in future transactions. This is especially useful when selling or trading used gear. - Tom Harrison
This has happened to me. I was looking for a lens one day for my Nikon and B&H was out of stock. The lens was about $1,649, a 70-200 f/2.8. I called a local camera store here in NJ and was told they had it for $1,949, which is a huge markup. I mentioned their price was high. They said they "needed to make a living." Obnoxious, if you ask me. Needless to say, I did not buy from them. - Farrell Kramer

ha3rvey, I still need to try out Dave's FlickrFan. My problem is that it's Mac only and I only have a MacBook Pro (that I'm typing on now and that is my primary computer). I use Slickr to download all my Flickr faves on the internet and then run similar slideshows with my Media Center PC. - Thomas Hawk

Great post. Additionally another random source is to check the "everyone" tab occasionally - I've found more than a few interesting things that way. I also like to randomly search for topics of interest and subscribe to the posters. - Doug Brooks
Thomas, Thanks for the link to the app for importing Twitter friends into FriendFeed. FF should do this on its own, but the app provides a great service. - Gregory Pittman via twhirl
I don't see the advantage yet to viewing Flickr photos in friendfeed vs in your RSS Reader. I was already seeing what my favorite Flickr people were fav'ing by subscribing to their fav feed in Google Reader. Plus you get to see the "unsafe" photos in Google Reader too (I think). - Kevin Reed
@Doug I've found a couple folks that way - Shey
I only have a handful of my Flickr contacts added to FF via "imaginary friends", but it's been a much better set-up than via RSS. I don't have to subscribe to both their stream and their faves; I simply get both. - JA Castillo

This is the first time I was mentioned in a top 10 list. Speechless. Thomas your involvement here will help the FF community grow. - Russellreno
Jeremy, you know I love you. That's the problem with these sorts of lists. Inevitably people get left off simply because they didn't come to mind right away. You are definitely someone worth subscribing to and I think the work that you do to introduce business to social media is invaluable! - Thomas Hawk
Agree @thomashawk @Louis Gray is the patron saint of FriendFeed - Marco (aureliusmaximus)
Michael and JA Castillo, RSS is dead to me now. Like Twitter. At some point I may need to take some of my top RSS feeds and make imaginary friends out of them, but hopefully those bloggers and news sites will just join FriendFeed instead and I can subscribe to them here. RSS was way too noisy without effective hide functionality. FF is a far better way to consume content. I'm also finding much more interesting new phtography news here like the story I just found from JA Castillo and blogged. - Thomas Hawk
Thanks for the reference, Thomas! Now I have to live up to being interesting :O! I was wondering why I was getting all those subscription notifications all of the sudden! - Lindsay Donaghe

For me, the greatest power of twitter is that people are listening. When someone tweets they expect a reply...whereas FF seems to be a bit more of a bookmarking utility (which i still enjoy a ton). In addition, there are few things more exciting than using twitter at an event and catching the stream-of-consciousness from all attendees. 1) there's a magic to twitter and all of a sudden it occurs to me that one of the reasons we're so enamoured with it may just be its fallibility. it makes it all the more human. 2) my friends on twitter are awesome. what can i say. 3) i really like the easy way to personalize the look. the change in avatars alone is entertaining. - isabella mori
I started my Twit-out this morning. Being in Malaysia, Wednesday came really early. :P 14:25 now...just a few more hours to go. Strangely tho, I feel kinda ok not Twittering today. - Paul David
Absolutely the speed. Twitter is such a part of my distributed information workflow that when it goes down I feel seriously cut off from the world. But I'm willing to wean myself from the Twitter Teat (tweater?) for a day just to see if this makes a difference. - Cecily Walker
Its simplicity. You can communicate in seconds. Right now I'm emailing posts to a pseudo-microblog, and hopping through many more hoops than I would if I just typed something in slandr. - Ontario Emperor
That you know - It is guaranteed: "Less gab in one entry!" =) - Erhan Erdogan
Twitter solves the tl;dr problem. - Morton Fox
Simplicity. The fact that your messages can be promiscuous or private. The sheer voyeuristic frisson of knowing What Someone Else is Eating for Dinner. The fact that it's a status board, a 2-way communications system, and a blog WITHOUT HAVING A MODAL SWITCH. The similarity to Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. The fact that it sometimes fulfills our Deep Inner Need to Complain. The fact that it is both CB radio and a Message in a Bottle. - Karim

Also, the light hypnotic trance achieved by contemplating the question, "What are you doing?" Zen koan or accusation? YOU decide! - Karim
The 140 character challenge... And my own unexpected answers to "What are you doing?" - Lisa L. Seifert
I really don't have much interest in social networks like Facebook - Twitter is a social network, but lightweight enough to work for me. No fending off app requests, or visiting page after page to leave quick messages for people. Simplicity. - Michael Randall via twhirl
in time of social networks, twitter is the best, the reason is the people here, intelligent users give the network it's value - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I concur with most of the comments above: brevity, simplicity, quick(when it works), gets the word out, etc. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Twitter has the potential to be the fastest news reporting services on the planet. - Vince DeGeorge
Communicating with masses in mere seconds, Twitter FTW. I love it for its sexinness, speed, and apps up the wazoo. - Jon Bishop
Another point is the size of the group you are addressing. In FriendFeed, this comment thread is basically a small conversation between us, and anyone who happens to wander in. If I were on Twitter now, I would automatically be conversing with a few hundred people at once (or, for Robert or Jason, thousands upon thousands). A whole different dynamic of conversing. - Ontario Emperor
I agree Ontario -- To me, the beauty of Twitter is it's 140 char limitation. No complex convos involving multiple parties make it easier to say what you have to say. No worries about not getting heard because folks are reading more than they are writing. - Shey
I used to get a lot of my news information and announcements from sites like digg. But now that I have and use twitter I find that the fastest and easiest way to find and get information delivered directly to me instead of me having to dig through my rss subscriptions. Friendfeed is also a great way for me to get new, information and announcements but I still need to dig through the information. - Jeffrey Blais via twhirl
I've got a little twitter fatigue right now (which is why the twit-out is so appealing) but ultimately, I love that it is my life's back channel. I don't care about how many people use it or what the twitter buzz is. I care about what the people in my life, or people I find interesting to my life, are thinking, feeling, finding important. The sense of connection and sense of community in the truest form of that word is what makes twitter special. - Jason Toney
One reason that I love Twitter is because messages can be directed to me and, if people follow the syntax (use my Twitter handle at the beginning of the tweet), I will find them. Look at Shey's comment 3 above this one; I very easily could have missed it. - Ontario Emperor

Good article. Probably best ignoring the comments, which seem to contain little but trolls and idiots. - Michael Randall
