I'm very introverted, but that doesn't mean I don't want any social interaction at all. Social media helps me handle more social interaction (and control it better) than I could in person, without being exhausted. - Nathan Howell

liking the balance as well (but still love the tech stuff too)... - mike "glemak" dunn
How so, Jason? Are you subscribing to new people to get the non-tech influx? - Lindsay Donaghe
totally the reason I wrote this blog post, pleaes feel free to pass around: http://www.jeffwoelker.com/200... - Jeff Woelker via twhirl
Agreed - that's why I love FF. Except when I see the pile on "group think" mentality. Independence is not over-rated. - LPH™
Yah, most of my Google reader is filled with Tech, Finance & Business. FF is a nice move away from that where I can go and discuss and see some interesting, more fun things. - Bartek Gniado
@Lindsay must be, certain folks like Mona N, Thomas Hawk, and edythe (and their associated crowd) share a lot of non tech stuff. I should compile a list of others... - Jason Kaneshiro
Non-tech photos & cool stuff: Mona N, edythe, RAPatton, Anna Haro, Mark Wilson, Thomas Hawk, Mrsth, Mahdi Ebrahimi, Eric (ejp1082), mhmazidi, Vincent X, Selma, Maryam Ardakani, Donato, Russellreno, shandiz, Andrew Baron, JA Castillo, Raoul Pop, Mladen Srdić, Corie Allison - Mitchell Tsai
Mainstream folks will use FF if there's something here for them to get out of it. Tech news bores people in general, so it's great to see different focuses arising. Heh, wait until the celebrity gossipers find this space. ;-) - Jim Stanger
I'm waiting for (1) movie fanatics (2) foodies. Delicious pics of food all around the web. - Mitchell Tsai
i stop checking it as much because it feel like quirky and fun articles don't interest me. i scan it and leave when serious discussion arises i listen but honestly i think some people do it to get a high "like" value and cute overload and yummy food are bound to get a reaction... - Caroline
Here's my current mix: Posts about bacon 42%, TechMeme echo chamber stuff 21%, Twitter rants 17%, posts about FF 10%, other 10% - Mike Doeff
I am actively trying to go for mostly tech stuff, since that is what interests me. You are probably subscribing to too many people if you are seeing all the other stuff. If it really bothers you only subscribe to people who are bringing mostly stuff you like. - Robert Scoble
Scoble, that doesn't work well on FriendFeed though. Let's say I never wanted to see another post about legos, bacon or Star Wars again. If I subscribed to the best people posting about Tech, and none of the people posting a lot of non tech I will still see, Legos, Bacon and Star Wars. I happen to love bacon, legos and Star Wars, but if I didn't, getting it out of my vision here would be a tough challenge. - Robert Seidman
"You are probably subscribing to too many people if you are seeing all the other stuff." ? look whos calling the kettle black .Scobles you were the first one that said, the more people you follow , the more interesting stuff you ge. Thereby, increasing knowledge base. did I misunderstand your therory or I stand correcte ! Of the 3.4K members that you follow , how many actually post tech stuff ? - Peter Dawson
http://friendfeed.com/rooms/bl... the art stuff is my way people.... but I don't allow censorship. so if you offend easy... hang out with the nerdy tech people and Obama. http://friendfeed.com/rooms/bl... - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
so i'm relying more on rooms lately for categorical feeds or post - so appstore, comiccon, stories etc... means my main friends tab has things that don't end up in a room sort of - not perfect but it helps me... - mike "glemak" dunn
Peter: Just subscribing to 9 people - Robert Scoble, Louis Gray, Mona N, edythe, RAPatton, Anna Haro, Mahdi Ebrahimi, Maryam Ardakani, and Thomas Hawk - would give you a serious chunk of FriendFeed. edythe has 22,000+ comments/likes and Maryam has 14,000+. - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell, not disputing anything at all. But what I am trying to saying is just following a large number of people , does not necessarly mean that you are getting interesting information from them. This breaks the philipsoy /theroy of following more FF people = wider varity of news streams. Rather Less = More value props are slowing emerging on this property.. - Peter Dawson
Mitchell, on second thought , let me repahse and pose a question. You follow 9 people , Scobles follows 3400 people. Who do you think has a better experince - Peter Dawson
Peter: lately I have been advising people "who you follow defines you." If you hate noise you certainly better not subscribe to more people. You should be hyper picky. Interesting that it gets noisy here, then I use the hide feature and all is good again. I hid about 20 posts about bacon yesterday and it was gone from my view. I like noise, so I subscribe to a lot more people. - Robert Scoble
Peter: I also have been telling people to actively block jerks. Why? Because if you follow jerks you become one yourself. Again, who you follow defines you. Another thing: I am more selective here than on Twitter. I only follow 3,000 or so here, 21,000 over on Twitter. Why? Because I found that I can't deal with the flow anymore, so will be more choosy about who I follow. I am changing how I will be defined by changing who I follow. - Robert Scoble
Peter: who has a better experience? Depends on your goals. If you only want to see when your wife and kid are posting, following just two people will serve your goals. If you are like me, though, and want to follow anyone interesting who is making you smarter, then will have a better experience following more. - Robert Scoble
"hyper picky"? Whoa. that's deep. :) - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I really think it is good to have a good cross-section of material. Much as I like tech stuff, it's good to read non-tech stuff too. When I see something posted by a friend of a friend that I find interesting, I then check their feed, and if the majority of recent content seems interesting I add them. I guess many other users work this way? - Ian May
bacon? Is that a code word? - (that)Kenny
well said Robert - Jeff Douglass
I hid the bacon stuff too, it got a bit tedious after a while, but I'm interested in science and technology stuff, I just wish there was more science and medicine stuff. - Sally Church
Sally: Any suggestions for interesting science areas? Maybe I can snoop around & find some cool new things from the past 1-2 yrs... - Mitchell Tsai
totally agree Jason. I also agree with Sally about the bacon info and often hide it as well. - Ruth Ferguson
Bound to happen I guess, but I sort of liked the techie stuff. Still, I can't bring myself to hide or block lolcats, you know? - Sarah Perez
Peter: I'm spending an increasing % of my time visiting people's feeds and discussions & searching rather than the friends tab (1) 35% Searches & everyone (2) 30% Other people's feeds & discussions (3) 15% My feed & discussion (4) 10% Best-of page (4) 10% Friends tab. --- I'm using FF more like a combo of Facebook and a search engine. The Friends tab is less useful with more subscriptions - most people are completely swamped out & invisible. I have to visit Hutch Carpenter's page & discussion directly. - Mitchell Tsai
Ok good feedback. As such, I am thinking of capping and triming my followers to new levels . (a) Bacon and Mango noise hurt's my ears. (b) I am seeing really stale stuff come out from many of tech peeps and I really mean stale news. The convo's are surrunding the nes is fresh but at times, my mind is already made up and predisposed in a certain way. So a lot more hides happening and therefor I really dont inject myself into the convo. (c) I want to raise the bar in terms of experince for myself on FF :)- - Peter Dawson
To elaborate further - I do like the tech stuff, but if FF is going to appeal to more mainstream users, it's got to have broad content, and it looks like this is happening. - Jason Kaneshiro
I do pretty much the same as Mitchell and read people's discussion pages otherwise many are drowned by the A-listers and I am not online 100% of the time. There's a lot of interesting and valuable stuff out there from smart, intelligent people but you have to go look for it. - Sally Church
Jason - bingo!! If we only have techie stuff, then all the non-techie kids will run and hide! - Susan Beebe
Check out all the entries for NASCAR: http://friendfeed.com/search?q... - Hutch Carpenter
follow me - I post great non-tech, quirky and arty stuff regularly, it's my micro-blog! - Ivan Pope via twhirl
FriendFeed really became more interesting when I branched out and increased the variety of folks I follow. - Todd Jordan
TOPICS/Keywords: Perhaps it's time for FriendFeed to start auto-keywording posts... About the old stuff popping up, maybe FF could keep a running list of hide-URLs, so if those URLs pop-up again they will stay hidden (personally I never use hide. Comments are often more interesting than the original articles). - Mitchell Tsai
I have a question. How will the new adopters get their content to be viewed if early adopters are only following early adopters/frienderati? - Derick Valadao
Derick, there are people who don't just follow the early adopters/in crowd, and are actively looking for new voices. Participate and you will be heard. - Mark Trapp
One of the things I love most about FF is that it allows me to talk/share about all of my different interests. I try to stick to webby topics on my blog so twitter/FF has been a perfect way to geek out on politics, TV, music, etc. - Eric Berlin
Considering I'm not techy much at all I'm really liking the new wave of content as well. I have a great friends list who keeps me with lots of links, both tech and music/TV/politics that I love. - Keke
A broadening of the audience is good. Or, to put it another way, increased mention of Miley Cyrus shows FriendFeed's maturity. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
