Let’s say you want to work out where you’ve heard the hook from Coldplay’s ‘Talk’ before. A quick search of WhoSampled reveals that it’s a sample from Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer Love’. What’s more, it displays a video for each song so you can compare them and links to buy the tracks from popular online music stores. WhoSampled also keeps track of cover versions, meaning you can easily discover little-known versions of your favourite songs. Submitting a sample or cover version is easy, with a form to fill in giving the details of the two tracks. You need to do your own work searching for a video of each song. Hopefully this will be semi-automated in the future. Fellow London-based service TubeRadioFM integrates Youtube search into its design so I’m sure it’s something WhoSampled could look at. Currently, video search needs to be done in a separate browser tab/window, meaning much switching around as you paste in the embed codes.

CanYouSeeMe.org's open port check tool is a simple but useful web-based utility for figuring out if your ISP or firewall is blocking certain ports you need to get things done on your computer. It's a handy way to determine if connection issues you're having—like difficulty sending email or trouble accessing an instant messaging client—are a problem with your internet connection or the computer itself.

FireFound is an add-on for Firefox and Fennec (mobile Firefox) that helps your find your computer (or mobile phone, in the case of Fennec) if it is lost or stolen. Every time your computer's location changes, FireFound sends a secure message to a central server with its current location. You can then log into the server and see your computer's current location. All of the location data is encrypted, so no one can find out where your computer is without your password. If you lose your computer, you can tell FireFound to clear your personal data (saved passwords, browsing history, etc.) if anyone starts your browser before you can retrieve it. You can even run your own FireFound server; all of the code is open-source. Note: All geolocation data is approximate, and should only be used as a guideline. If your computer has been stolen, do not try to retrieve it yourself - alert the police.

Windows only: Driver update utility Device Doctor finds outdated drivers on your PC, and helps you download the latest version—without charging you a dime. Using the utility, which can be installed or used as a portable application, is about as easy as it gets—just click the Begin Scan button, wait a couple of seconds, and you will be shown a list of drivers that can be updated. The download button for each driver will take you to their web site, where you can download the drivers for free, without signing up for anything at all. Most of the drivers come with setup programs, but some of them are nothing more than zip files, and would need to be installed manually—hopefully something they can improve on in the future.

Yet another good article on why that which is published on TechCrunch is not to ingest with a pinch of salt, but rather a truckful of it. To be rightfully compared with the last.fm incident: http://blog.last.fm/2009...

The really cool thing about the Google Tasks client is that, since it's merely built on the Google Mobile API, you can actually access any Google app available as a mobile site from Google Tasks. Just scroll to the top and choose your app (or hit "more" for a larger list), and you can access Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and others within the same client, essentially making it an all-around Google Mobile client. If you feel like you have one too many SSBs open at any given time, this is a pretty nice solution.

CacheMyWork is a handy utility that lets you reboot without losing your place in your work. It builds a checklist of currently open applications, and will restart the apps you've selected the next time you logon to the computer. Cache My Work is great for occasions when you need to unexpectedly reboot, such as on "Patch Tuesday", after installing new drivers, or when Windows runs out of Desktop Heap, Handles or GDI Objects (which happens more often than I'd like - even with the fixes described here). If you're like me, you avoid rebooting your computer because it means you'll forget what you were working on. Every time I have to reboot because of some install/uninstall/patch, invariably I forget half of what I was working on because I don't remember all the docs and apps I have to reopen (those 5-15 minutes between "shutdown all apps" and "logged in, Windows quieted down" are huge opportunities for me to be randomized and lose my short-term memory cache).

Some insight into what the future might bring. I like the inclusion of the psychological aspects of trying to get people to use a web browser as a unified application as that's just for browsing to them, not for using desktop applications.

This is small tool that adds Attach and Detach option to contextual (aka right-click) menu of Virtual disk (vhd) files. That enables those operations to be done without trip to Disk Management console. Detach option is available on hard drive contextual menu also. Additionally program can be used as classic utility in order to see various information about virtual disk, even without attaching it. Do notice that this program only works with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Older operating systems are not supported.

Compare My Docs comes from the same folks who created TextFlow, the Adobe AIR-based app that spot differences across multiple copies of a Word document or rich text file. Compare My Docs does many of the same things as TextFlow, including being able to compare up to six versions of the same document to see what's been changed. The big difference though, is that it runs right in your browser and requires no sign-up whatsoever. Just like TextFlow, Compare My Docs color codes any changes it finds between the different revisions of a document and gives you a quick and easy way to accept, reject, or set aside a change. This means you can cruise through a document and keep the changes or revisions you like, while keeping an active log of what you don't. When finished, you'll have a new version that has all of those changes, which can be saved either as a Word doc or rich text file back on your hard drive.

The tiny, portable application launches a dashboard with one-click fixes for 40 common Windows XP problems. Quick Fix makes short work of irksome situations like a disabled task manager, missing Device Manager tab, and the infamous CD/DVD missing/not reading bug. The program is essentially a collection of registry fixes, since that's where most of these problems originate. You might want to create a system restore point prior to running Quick Fix (or backing up your registry) just in case. XP Quick Fix is a free, portable download and - not surprisingly - runs on Windows XP systems.
