Considering buying a USB powered external hard drive that I can use with desktop and netbook. Looking for 1TB size. Any recommendations? I always look for value for money (which doesn't always mean cheapest of course!).
Sergio, your link doesn't work, but I am assuming you're meaning the Passport Essential range? I have looked at those. I was looking around to see if there was a better price than $199 anywhere. Best Buy has them for $189, but then I have to add tax, which about balances the shipping from Amazon I reckon. I have a BlacX dock station, but I was looking for something I can tuck in my netbook case, hence the size and the USB powerage.
- Ian May
Ian, here is Sergio's link I had to extract the link. It's the My Book Essential for $109. http://www.amazon.com/gp... From personal experience the My Book's are great affordable external drives.
- Jimminy IS Everybody
Thanks Jimminy. Thing is the My Books are not USB powered, so not really portable. I already have a BlacX SATA Dock, and I could simply buy another 1.5TB 3.5in external for desktop use, I don't need an external drive with enclosure now I have this Dock, as it's hot-swappable http://bit.ly/5vELTT
- Ian May
That docking system works really great, but I don't really want to lug around around with me and power supply, and 3.5in drive, with my netbook - it's that Passport Essential size, and the USB power that I find attractive for the netbook use, even though it's $199 against $90 for a 1TB 3.5in bare drive.... it's that price difference that's making me hesitate a bit.
- Ian May
I have an HP external 1TB drive that's been working pretty well for me for the last 6 or 7 months. Unfortunately, if you haven't already found this out: 750 gig and smaller can, in most cases be powered by the USB cable but 1 TB and larger requires a separate power supply.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
I don't know that we are quite there for a 1TB. Those USB power drives are all laptop drives. 1TB tends to still be desktop drives. It'll be a couple more months.
- Eric - seven eleven
Curtiss, from what I read the WD 1TB doesn't require a separate supply.
- Ian May
Eric, I saw the 1TB WD passport in Best Buy a couple of days back. I never buy in Best Buy (unless I really need it now) w/o checking online prices first, as I know Best Buy are almost always more expensive. In this case, the price is about the same. If I wait a couple of months, they'll probably be a 1.5TB or even 2TB out in that size.
- Ian May
There are no 1GB 2.5" drives. If you want to run it just off USB power, you're limited to 500GB I think. I usually find the best deal on a good hd on newegg and buy an external enclosure to go with it. It's almost always cheaper
- Rodfather
from Android
Rodfather, that WD 1TB IS a 2.5GB USB powered drive. I agree that a regular 3.5in drive is a much cheaper option. I don't need an enclosure with the BlackX dock. It's not very portable though. Won't fit in my netbook case, like the 1TB WD will. Big premium to pay though.
- Ian May
There's no such thing as a 1TB laptop drive. The most is 640GB. You need a laptop drive to run only off USB. It's not possible to run a 3.5" drive only off USB power.
- Rodfather
Ian - you're right. I didn't see the WD drives the first time, as the link wasn't working. Those WD drives are capable of being powered directly through the USB port. The next question you'll need to face, though, is whether or not the power supply in your desktop and/or laptop is capable of powering the drives.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
I guess my next question would be how does the power consumption of drives relate to capacity. I realize that a bigger drives consumes more power but how does say a 500GB's draw compare to a 1TB for example. I'm sure it's not as easy as x2
- Ian May
Yeah, you'd really have to find that data from the manufacturer or elsewhere. I'm sure you can find 1TB drives that have the exact same power consumption of a 500GB drive, but not if they are using the same technology.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Now that's interesting. I guess there are 1TB laptop drives. The capacity doesn't factor in with how much power it draws. They'll add another platter or fit more bits on to one platter to increase capacity, but it draws the same power.
- Rodfather
Yeah, power draw is more a function of number of platters and how fast the drive spins, but even then newer drives use various methods to lower power consumption, particularly when the drive is idle.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
I suppose I could get one at Best Buy, and if my netbook won't power it from the USB (although it works fine with a Lighscribe DVD burner that is also USB powered, and I've never had to use the second USB cable), I can take it back.
- Ian May
I recently bought a 2-bay 1-TB Netgear ReadyNAS and I'm a happy customer.
- imabonehead
Here's a photo of my BlacX dock I use at home. http://bit.ly/6zSdUk It has an external power supply, and it's connected via USB. Drives are hot swappable. They're about $30. Drives don't seems to overheat as they're not enclosed. This is the cheapest way I've found to add external drives, and I like the swappable option. I use that 1TB in the photo for TV I've downloaded and want to keep to watch again later.
- Ian May
These drives usually come with a USB cable that splits into two in case it needs more power.
- Rodfather
500GB notebook drives seem have a good balance of price/capacity these days (if you can go lower than 1GB). When I bought my netbook, 500GB drives just arrived but 320GB drives were at a good price. So I swapped out the netbook drive for the 320GB and put the original in an enclosure. Enclosures are cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product...
- Rodfather
Rodfather, only thing is, I'd still have to carry around the enclosure and power block and cable, whereas with one of those pocket-size drives it would fit in my netbook case.
- Ian May
The link I put up lists laptop harddrive enclosures that are USB powered. So basically, you'd be making your own pocket-sized portable drive. I picked up one of these at Fry's http://www.newegg.com/Product.... It works.. has an eSATA port just in case too.
- Rodfather
Rodfather, I took a look at that enclosure, and it certainly looks good. However, I'd still have to buy the 2.5inch drives to go in it (I only have 3.5in SATA drives here), and I can't see that I'd save any money over buying one of these WD passport ones. The one advantage I'd have is that it's easier to upgrade to a bigger capacity drive at a later date of course.
- Ian May
Yes, you'd still need to order a 2.5" drive. It's generally cheaper to find a good deal on an OEM harddrive and add an enclosure. If there's an external hd that's cheaper than building one yourself, go for it.
- Rodfather
As a frugalist, I almost always toss and turn and umm and arrr before I make any purchase over about say.... 25 cents.. LOL
- Ian May
I uses a lot of WD 1TB and have not had any problems.
- Lars Clausen
Interesting, I hadn't known they had 1TB 2.5" drives now either. After taking a closer look it appears WD's 750GB and 1TB 2.5" drives are "over-sized" models (12.5mm thick as opposed to the regular 9.5mm) so they won't fit in all laptops. Also of interest is the 5200RPM speed which is a little odd as it's usually 5400 or 7200.

TH - what's the issue at hand? Are you able to get around it or are you stuck? You could just change the parent folder of what you are copying to "EVERYONE" and you should be good to go. EDIT: just realized this is from last week....how did this pop back up?

I looked at at least two pages of every user who posted. I just started learning, so I bookmarked about 20 pages that I'll be coming back to. This was nice, thanks!

I didnt really want to add everyone i know on friendfeed to my facebook, i like to keep them seperate as much as i can. but you know what, fuck it http://www.facebook.com/simon... add a note saying you;re from friendfeed if you add me, then i can group everyone up :)

Thanks, Simon. I've not started going through these yet. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm only going to add the people i actually talk to on here. I have a lot less people on my follow list than you, so its a bit easier for me :)

Remember, guys. According to FB, you're only allowed 5000 friends. Spend them wisely.

As if we weren't before? Were they really that many people here who didn't also have a FB account, even if they didn't list it in their profile? I've been with FB since 2004

I don't freaking have one because I never wanted to sign up for Facebook. :P Now I find out that through no fault of my own I'm technically a Facebook user? GAH.
- Cheryl Jones
I do not use it much LOL I just post to it from other sites so to fill up my friends stream, I do get messages and some status in text. Anyone who really wants to add me, use the facebook link on my profile. :o)

www.facebook.com/drodzand you won't see much since I got the privacy settings on max in Facebook. Just another reason why I think Facebook is completely different from friendfeed. I hope they keep friendfeed running because I use both services in diametrically diverse ways.

"You will lose your sex drive. Your genitals will swell. You will suffer excruciating pain. You won’t be able to get an erection or ejaculate. You won’t be a man anymore. While it is a routine operation—nearly 500,000 are performed in the United States every year—the myths about vasectomies fester. In fact, the outpatient procedure is a simple form of birth control for men, intended to be permanent, in which the health care provider closes or blocks the tubes that carry sperm. This prevents sperm from leaving the body or causing pregnancy; the body instead absorbs it. Used as birth control, vasectomies are nearly 100 percent effective."

People keep suggesting I get one of these (including fiance), but there is something inside me that just can't do it.
- Rahsheen?
Had a friend who did it. He said it helped solidify his relationship with his wife.
- Steven Perez
I got one 30 years ago, no problems! :)
- Lars Clausen
@Rahsheen, your fiance? So she NEVER wants to have kids with you after you get married?
- Alex Scrivener
I'm with you, Rahsheen... there are other ways to practice birth control. Plus, something my friend said to me, a guy who's married and has three kids, sticks with me: "What if something happens to my family? Wouldn't I want a chance to start another family?" Generally, I'm against any elective surgery that takes away natural functions
- .LAG liked that
Of course, I have to jump in now...lol. @LAG: I would suggest that you list out those other forms of birth control, and consider their pros and cons, then draw a comparison. The vast majority of birth control place responsibility on the female partner, often with side effects that aren't great in the long term. Second, elective surgery that takes away natural functions? Which natural function does vasectomy take away? @Steven - great topic! :D
- Prosey BUTTONS!
This will be our form of birth control once we're done having children. If I can have a baby cut out of my belly, my husband can easily have his vas deferens snipped!
- Headless Gnad Kicker
My ex refused to get snipped. His argument? I shouldn't breed anyway, since I had depression. (Of course, he's (a) got borderline personality disorder, (b) got Asperger syndrome, (c) an abusive a**hole, (d) all of the above.
- Ordinarybug Heather
Oh Heather, what a POS. Sounds a lot like my ex - who, when I suggested we get marriage counseling told me, "We don't have a problem, but if you think YOU have a problem, then maybe YOU should see a shrink." -- this, given (at the time) about a decade of TONS of marital problems that I had been suggesting we see a marriage counselor for years about. *HIS* reason for refusing a...

Word of caution: *be sure* to go to your follow-up appointment that tests the effectiveness of the operation. A friend of mine didn't and lo was he surprised when his girlfriend came up pregnant a few months later. The operation doesn't always 'take' so you gotta check and make sure.
- Kevin Fox
I have a kid already with my fiance and it's still up in the air whether we will have more. She says no, but it's not a set in stone, No. More like a Not Right Now. I'm with LAG in that I'm wary of any procedure that permanently changes what I'm naturally able to do. Plus, I'm only 30.
- Rahsheen?
Kevin, it can take months before the sperm count is at 0 -- and the docs generally want two 0-counts in a row to be sure. Not necessarily that it doesn't "take" -- just that additional contraception should be used in the meantime. And sperm count checks once per year thereafter, to be sure (because in *very* rare cases, the vas can reconnect). @Rah, yeah, you're in a position that if...

- Prosey BUTTONS!
Kevin, it depends on how the Dr. does the operation. If he just ties off the vas deferens or makes a cut, it is possible that it could heal back. If he takes a section out of the vas deferens and then cauterizes and stitches both lose ends, it's a pretty sure thing. Also some very small percentage of men apparently have more that two vas deferens tubes and if you don't cut them all, then the procedure does not work, obviously.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Recanalization does not guarantee restoration of fertility; and duplicated vas deferens "syndrome" exists in less than 0.05% of the population making it highly unlikely - and the likelihood is that it would be seen/felt during the procedure, or a persistent sperm count of greater than 0 after 6 months would clue the urologist to the possibility. (http://www.vasectomy-information.com/wordpre...)
- Prosey BUTTONS!
Rene, my aversion to getting my nuts cut has nothing to do with what I would want my fiance to do. I just don't want a knife anywhere near my business. I don't want to be permanently unable to reproduce. I don't prefer that she does anything. On another note, let's say I still want kids, but she doesn't. Why should I get a vasectomy?
- Rahsheen?
Rah (I know I'm not Rene, but...) - my thought is if you still want more kids, then something like sterilization is not the right option for you. I disagree with *involuntary* surgery, or undue pressure from another person about something you feel is not something in your best interest. If, however, you were at a place in your life that you knew you and she together absolutely did not...

Rene is correct, the surgery is really a non-issue, very minor and doesn't hurt. You are in and out of the office in less than an hour.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I'd rather use a condom with spermicide than either party have surgery. I know condoms aren't 100%, but the chances are low enough to be the better alternative to either partner going under the knife. But then, I'm personally aversive of surgery unless it's something I really need.
- alphaxion
I think it's a deep seated thing due to a disturbing dream I had when I was 7 or 8 where I dreamt my own death (was in a hospital, on a life support machine when they switched it off). Also, I'm uneasy with the concept of casually slicing into a healthy body when non-invasive alternatives exist. No surgery should ever be taken lightly, regardless of how commonly it is performed.
- alphaxion
alphaxion, It's about as non invasive as you can get and still call it surgery. Removing a cyst or a mole is probably more invasive. The risk of complications from this procedure is almost nill.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I guess there is also the desire to have your options open should minds change over time without requiring yet another procedure.
- alphaxion
@jeff while it's nothing compared to having to go deeply into the body, it's still a drastic solution to a problem with other alternatives. As long as it was proven to not have any major side effects (since flooding the body with extra chemicals/hormones will have other effects than chemical castration), a pill solution would also not be out of the equation. So far, a condom has served me well and not delivered any unexpected presents. I've found my solution. To each their own :D
- alphaxion
tho I do agree with the general train of thought that contraception is not just something the woman has to deal with, as we (the male) have an equal share in any offspring too.
- alphaxion
My husband called Planned Parenthood from the maternity ward as soon as our one very-much-wanted child was born. Bless him.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Rene, Prose Petal ...good points. To Prose's question what natural functions does a vasectomy take away: well, the most important life function of all-- the ability to procreate. To Rene's issue: would you want your kids graduating when you're retiring? I think that really depends on the person, and on the children and the joy (or horror) they bring to ones life. I remember reading...

I know of no other alternatives for males to achieve permanent 100% contraception. Compared to all of the female alternatives it has significantly less risk and is the least invasive. I understand that it is not for everyone and some people are adverse to surgery of any kind. That's why there are other non surgical methods to chose from if one desires. I did not have an issue with it, it worked fine for me.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff ...cool. I think the best thing about it, at least in the States right now, is that each individual can make the choice. I'm for personal choice in all things.
- .LAG liked that
@LAG: I understand the ability to procreate is removed (it's not *technically* contraception; it's sterilization *nod*) -- but once a person has had children, or if a person is CFBC, then beyond the option to remove the ability to procreate, then there is no single other function that vasectomy removes or inhibits. And I fully agree about choice. This is NOT a desired choice for...

For those who have both #Flickr and #Zooomr accounts, care to share what you upload to one vs another? I just signed up an account mostly thanks to Thomas Hawk (clearly he has done his job well as "chief evangelist") but I am undecided about the content to upload and don't really want to double syndicate.
I upload everything to both Flickr and Zooomr. They have different user bases, though there is some crossover. And it's nice having a backup of sorts.
- Jeremy Brooks
It all depends on what your goal is? - if it is getting your work out to a large audience I do not think you can get around Flickr. I also upload everyting to Zooomr but I think that Zooomr has to do something to really get into the game again. Whether they can or will do so I do not know, Thomas know much more about that than I do.
- Lars Clausen
Interesting. Thanks for your feedback! I guess I will *really* have to explore using http://tarpipe.com to cross post then. Right now I only cross-post videos on all major networks. :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I generally post everything to both, except mobile uploads that go just to Flickr. Zooomr hasn't worked out their mobile uploading solution, afaik. Zooomr is a much better community than Flickr and doesn't have censorship issues nor rogue mercenaries on staff.
- Dave Roth
I upload all of my images to both, sometimes the same images the same day, othertimes not.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas.Hawk Good to know. I just thought that you don't because when I saw your FriendFeed the Zooomr uploads vs Flickr uploads look like different content! Perhaps you guys can talk to the folks at http://tarpipe.com to see if they can support Zooomr then it becomes all a lot easier :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I upload sort of haphazardly to the two, different photos on different days sometimes, same photos other times, different order of photos, hence the two different but at times similar looking feeds in Friendfeed.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas.Hawk Zooomr can use a better UI team though. Are you guys doing it in house or was it done by an agency? Right now the stuff is a bit crowdy. I will explore further. And what's your 'censorship' standards?
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
See-ming. Zooomr doesn't have any censorship. The UI is under Kristopher Tate's management. I'm not sure how much time he's putting into actively improving it these days. I think at present Zooomr is pretty much a what you see is what you get sort of proposition.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas.Hawk 1. Thanks for the info. 2. I have read reports of Zooomr both recruited you as 'chief evangelist' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... vs it's your company (that you own shares of it? but I couldn't find any reference). Would be great if you can clear this mystery. 3. I'm just curious. My apologies in advance if this intrudes your personal privacy space.
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
No problem. The company Zooomr is not mine. I own equity in it, but am not the majority owner. Kristopher Tate is the primary owner and developer of the site. I have worked as the Chief Evangelist for Zooomr. Kristopher moved operations to Japan a few years ago though and since then I've been less involved.
- Thomas Hawk
Right. Thanks for clearing that up Thomas.
